QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: Unmarried and approaching 40, a woman sees her life unravel after her best friend gets engaged and asks her to be the maid of honor.
PLOT:
Annie's (KRISTEN WIIG) life is falling apart. Her bakery shop recently closed. Her boyfriend has dumped her. Her car is a clunker. She's struggling to make ends meet. And she's now dating Ted (JON HAMM), a complete cad who only wants sex from her. The one good thing in her life is Lillian (MAYA RUDOLPH), a lifelong best friend who has been with her through thick and thin.

Lillian, though, surprises Annie one night by announcing her engagement. She then names Annie her maid of honor, which immediately brings Annie into conflict with Helen (ROSE BYRNE), a wealthy new friend of Lillian's who is an expert at throwing lavish parties and get-togethers. Helen is especially impressive to the three other bridesmaids: the uncouth Megan (MELISSA McCARTHY); the unhappy Rita (WENDI McLENDON-COVEY); and the uncomplicated Becca (ELLIE KEMPER).

No matter what Annie does, her plans always go awry. The Brazilian restaurant she picks for a ladies' lunch gives each of the women food poisoning, which ends up having dire consequences at their dress fitting. An airplane trip to Las Vegas ends before it begins after Annie mixes liquor and pills to calm her fear of flying. And that's to say nothing of the complete mental breakdown Annie suffers at the bridal shower. Her only lifeline is Rhodes (CHRIS O'DOWD), a good-hearted cop who falls for her nuttiness.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Older teens, especially girls, may be drawn to the film's R-rated antics and female-heavy cast.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For some strong sexuality, and language throughout.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • KRISTEN WIIG plays a down-on-her-luck woman nearing 40 whose life starts to come undone after her best friend gets engaged. She is sexually promiscuous, uses profanity, and is a social drinker. At one point, she unwisely mixes liquor and a prescription medication aboard a plane to ease her fear of flying. She is jealous of her best friend's growing relationship with a new friend who seemingly has everything she lacks - poise, money, success, beauty, and so forth.
  • MAYA RUDOLPH plays the best friend who becomes engaged to a man from a well-to-do family. She uses profanity and is a social drinker. She has it more together than Annie, but suffers a crisis of confidence late in the film that nearly derails her wedding.
  • ROSE BYRNE plays Lillian's social-climbing new friend who actively vies with Annie for her affections. She is very charming to those who are easily impressed. However, she is despised by her two stepchildren, has a penchant for showing off her wealth and personal connections, and admits late in the film that she is terrible at forming human connections. She drinks socially.
  • MELISSA McCARTHY plays a frequently rude and often ill-mannered bridesmaid. Her antics range from stealing multiple dogs at a lavish bridal shower to coming on strong to who she believes is an air marshal aboard a flight to Las Vegas. Her positive qualities, though, are she is very honest and quite loyal to her friends. She uses profanity and drinks socially.
  • WENDI McLENDON-COVEY plays a bridesmaid -- the bride's cousin, in fact -- who is unhappy in her marriage and is openly disdainful towards her school-age children. She admits to having had multiple sex partners prior to marriage and laments that she and her husband still have frequent sex, but no longer kiss. She is a hard drinker, uses frequent profanity, and intimates that she can get cocaine if needed.
  • ELLIE KEMPER plays a bridesmaid who is newly married and still feeling blissfully happy. She drinks socially, but is generally an innocent throughout. However, when she gets drunk for the first time aboard a plane sitting next to Rita, she confesses that her and her husband's sex life has been lacking lately. She even shows an attraction to Rita and kisses her.
  • JILL CLAYBURGH plays Annie's supportive mother who attends AA meetings for the experience even though she has never had a drink.
  • JON HAMM plays a boorish man who wants only a sexual relationship with Annie and prefers that she not spend nights sleeping over at his house. He refers to her as his "Number 3," meaning she is the third woman in order of importance and desirability he calls on a list of sex partners when feeling amorous.
  • CHRIS O'DOWD plays a good-hearted cop who takes a liking to Annie after he cites her for broken taillights. He drinks socially and uses some profanity. As a cop, he lets civilian Annie ride along in his squad car while on duty and even allows her to use his radar speed gun.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this comedy that has been rated R. Profanity consists of at least 23 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Much sexually related dialogue is present, along with one fairly graphic sex sequence in which the main character and her boyfriend make love in numerous positions. The film has only brief, very partial nudity though. Other sex occurs off camera.

Violence consists of two women getting into a wrestling and slapping altercation on a sofa. Another scene has two of the main characters engaging in a violent game of tennis in which each intentionally hit balls at one another. Still another scene has the film's lead character being tackled hard aboard a flight bound for Las Vegas. This is all played for comical effect.

Bad attitudes are present throughout, as is much potentially imitative behavior and various thematic elements. An extended sequence has five of the main female characters getting sick with food poisoning, which leads to much vomiting and diarrhea on their part. Drinking is also present, as are some drug references. The main character takes a prescription drug aboard a flight to ease her fear of flying, but mixes it with liquor to comically disastrous effect. Tense family material is also present.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • During an opening sequence, the camera pans through Ted's house as we hear the sounds of him and Annie having sex. On a table, we see multiple bottles of liquor and other spirits.
  • We find out Annie's mother is also her boss's sponsor at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
  • Annie's mother tells Annie about one AA meeting attendee who became a male prostitute and performed sexual favors to get crack cocaine.
  • Annie's mother goes to AA meetings even though she has never taken a drink in her life.
  • Annie brings Lillian a bottle of wine at her apartment, and Lillian then tells her about the engagement.
  • Many people, including almost all of the main characters, are shown drinking wine, cocktails and other alcoholic beverages at Lillian's engagement party early in the film.
  • Lillian spots her grandma drinking wine and runs over to stop her.
  • While toasting Lillian at her engagement party, Helen recalls a number of drunken Saturday nights with her friend and one trip to Miami, in particular, where the two consumed large quantities of wine.
  • Lillian, Annie, and the four other bridesmaids share what is possibly Sangria at a Brazilian restaurant.
  • Annie and Rhodes have a chance meeting in a liquor store where we see numerous bottles of beer and other spirits.
  • Rita tells Annie she can get them cocaine for the bachelorette party if she wants it.
  • Annie mixes whiskey and prescription drugs Helen gives her in an attempt to calm her fear of flying. She becomes quite inebriated.
  • Also aboard the flight, Rita orders her and Becca a couple of double "7 and 7s" (a mixed drinking containing whiskey and 7-Up).
  • Rhodes and Annie share beers in a bar where multiple customers are also shown drinking various alcoholic beverages, and a number of bottles of liquor and other spirits are clearly visible behind the bar.
  • Annie gets into a quarrel with a female teenage customer, who cracks, "Did you not take your Xanax today?" Xanax is an anti-anxiety drug.
  • Much champagne is served at Lillian's fancy bridal shower.
  • Annie tries desperately to convince Rhodes to help her and Helen find Lillian, but he won't even look at her from the front seat of his parked squad car. So, Annie performs a series of increasingly silly and comical ploys to get him to act, including driving by while drinking a large bottled beer.
  • BLOOD/GROSS STUFF
  • Annie's roommate, Brynn, got a tattoo from an unlicensed artist and we see a nasty infection setting in on her bare back.
  • Megan is the first to feel the effects of food poisoning from the Brazilian restaurant Annie picked. She walks into the bridal-gown shop and lets out a gross sound to which she says she doesn't know which end that came out of.
  • Megan continues to have intestinal distress throughout the sequence, along with Lillian and the other bridesmaids (Helen does not because she did not eat meat at the restaurant). We hear their insides making squishy, nauseating sounds and they let out brief belches and farts. Megan and Becca start to gag badly.
  • Rita runs into the bridal shop's bathroom and graphically vomits in the toilet with some of it spraying on the outside and rim. Megan then runs in and squats in the sink and we hear her diarrhea hitting the basin. Becca then runs in and throws up on Rita's head as it is pressed into the toilet bowl.
  • Lillian tries to make it to a public restroom across the street from the bridal shop, but she can't. So, she squats down in traffic and defecates on a public street. Thankfully, the long wedding dress she has just tried on obscures anything graphic.
  • Megan tells Jon that she is going to go "take a wiz," meaning urinate.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Annie tells Ted that he is so sexy and he casually replies, "I know."
  • Ted cuts short his and Annie's pillow talk and callously asks her to leave after a night of sex. He then doesn't open his estate's front gate, but instead makes her climb the fence.
  • Annie and Lillian hide and participate from afar in an exercise class without paying for it.
  • The fitness trainer is shown yelling at his female students in a public park and referring to them as "bitches."
  • Lillian says her boyfriend too often refers to her as "dude."
  • Lillian refers to her boss as a "psychopath."
  • Annie's boss tells her that her "sales face" makes her look like she has menstrual cramps. He then praises another employee in front of her and has her show what a real "sales face" looks like.
  • Bitter that Lillian is getting married and she isn't, Annie tells a happy Asian couple who are customers at the jewelry store where she works that their love with eventually fade away and that the two lovers should not trust each other. Annie even tells the woman that her guy might even be faking that he is Asian.
  • A man is shown jumping for joy on an afternoon talk show when he finds out he is not the father of a woman's baby.
  • Suddenly competitive with each other, Annie and Helen try to one-up each other by giving dueling toasts at Lillian's engagement party. The multiple toasts go on way too long and make the party guests feel uncomfortable.
  • We learn that Annie's previous boyfriend broke up with her when her business went bankrupt.
  • Helen's two stepchildren are openly disdainful of her and the stepson even tells her to "F*ck off" in front of Annie.

  • Annie makes fun of Helen's voice and intimates that she performed oral sex on an exclusive restaurant owner in Vegas to get them a table, briefly miming the actual sex act.
  • An inebriated Annie makes fun of a male flight attendant, calling him "Grandpa" and "Stove" when his name is really "Steve."
  • Rhodes jokes that he'd still like to shoot people even if he wasn't a cop.

  • Annie walks behind her old store and finds that the front signage has been vandalized.
  • After she loses her job, Annie's roommates ask her to move out.
  • A depressed Annie tells a female teenage customer, who has come into her jewelry store to buy a "Best Friends Forever" necklace for her girlfriend, that she really won't be friends forever with her classmate. The girl then asks Annie if she has taken her Xanax today, prompting Annie to call the girl a "little c*nt." Annie then jokes that the girl doesn't have "boobs" yet, and the girl replies, "Neither do you." Annie then mimes an oral sex act that she says the girl is likely fond of performing, then asks if she'll be going to her prom pregnant. Annie's boss fires her.
  • Annie reaches the breaking point at an extremely elaborate bridal shower Helen throws for Lillian. After Helen gives Lillian a pre-wedding trip to Paris, Annie screams at both of them for their pretentiousness, intimates that Helen may be a lesbian, accuses the two of getting their sphincters bleached together, then proceeds to destroy decorations, turn over tables and a large chocolate fountain, and start consuming an enormous cookie. Lillian asks her to leave and not come to the wedding.
  • A driver slams into Annie's car from behind, but then drives away before police can be called or insurance information exchanged.
  • Megan talks about her high-school years when other kids often called her a "freak" and would throw firecrackers at her head.
  • As Lillian and her new husband drive off to start their honeymoon, Megan jokes to Annie that she put a loaded gun in her brother's carry-on bag as a joke.
  • Helen comes to enlist Anne's help in finding Lillian, and Annie at first slams the door in her face.
  • Helen pours out her heart to Annie and asks her for forgiveness for being so competitive with her and driving her to do crazy things. But Annie refuses to accept her apologies. The two eventually do come to an understanding at the end of the film and embrace.
  • Helen and Annie find Rhodes parked in his squad car and beg him to help them find Lillian. Rhodes, though, is still hurt at Annie rejecting him and rolls up his window to ignore them.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Lillian is in such intestinal distress that she runs out of the bridal shop into oncoming traffic to try and get to a public bathroom across the street.

• Lillian gets cold feet before her wedding and hides out at her apartment.
  • Annie tries desperately to convince Rhodes to help her and Helen find Lillian, but he won't even look at her from the front seat of his parked squad car. So, Annie performs a series of increasingly silly and comical ploys to get him to act. They include: driving by and littering, driving by at a very high rate of speed, driving by while drinking a beer, driving by topless, executing a movie-like stunt spin, pretending to be a gangster and playing loud rap music, and ultimately slamming into the back of his police car.
  • As Lillian and her new husband drive off to start their honeymoon, Megan jokes to Annie that she put a loaded gun in her brother's carry-on bag as a joke.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • Lillian is in such intestinal distress that she runs out of the bridal shop into oncoming traffic to try and get to a public bathroom across the street and is nearly hit by a couple of vehicles.

  • Annie walks behind her old store and discovers that vandals have altered the front sign so that it no longer reads "Cake Baby." It now says, "C*ck Baby."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • The film opens with Annie and Ted having sex in his bed. We hear the two making loud grunting and groaning sounds and Ted ordering Annie to "cup my balls" before we actually see them in action. Once the camera is in the room, the two are shown having sex at different speeds in multiple positions. Sometimes, Annie is on top, then Ted is, then he is behind her, then he is thrusting into her from the side. The entire scene is shot from angles so as not to show any overt nudity, though.
  • The next morning, we see Annie in a bra and panties and Ted is shirtless with a sheet covering his nudity below the waist. They share multiple long kisses before he asks her to leave.
  • Over breakfast, Annie tells Lillian about her "sleepover" the night before with Ted. Lillian crassly asks if he had a "sleepover in your mouth." The two then talk about how gross it is when men bring their penises too close to their faces during intimacy.
  • Brynn's bare buttocks are partially seen when she shows Annie her new tattoo.
  • Annie's mother refers to a rehab patient having to resort to a life of male prostitution and "blow-jobbing to get crack."

  • Megan lusts after a tall, African-American man at Lillian's engagement party and tells Annie, "I'm gonna climb that like a tree!"
  • Rita talks about having three horny, young sons and that her house has "semen everywhere." She also speaks of a ruined towel breaking in half from all of the boys' production.
  • Brynn tells Annie she may have to be a prostitute in order to pay her share of the rent.
  • When Annie tries to dissuade the other bridesmaids from having Lillian's bachelorette party in Las Vegas because of her fear of flying, Rita pleads with her not to take her "sex fantasy" away. She then exclaims, "I want balls in my face!"
  • Ted and Annie are shown in the afterglow of sex. They are lying in bed. Ted is shirtless, and Annie is in a bra. They share several long kisses, and Ted grabs Annie's right breast and ask if the other man she is interested in can do what he is doing.
  • Becca confesses to Rita that she has only had sex in her lifetime with her husband. Rita is shocked by this and tells her she has slept with multiple men and that women really need "those slutty college years." Rita also confesses to Becca that she and her husband still have a lot of sex but they almost never kiss anymore.
  • An inebriated Annie mimes performing an oral sex action on a man while talking about Helen.
  • Megan tries to get Jon to confess that he has a gun hidden in his buttocks.

The scene then cuts to the next morning with off-screen sex implied. Annie is shown in bed under a blanket. We see her bare back, but nothing else.
  • Annie calls a female teenage customer a "little c*nt." She then jokes that the girl doesn't have "boobs" yet, and the girl replies, "Neither do you." Annie then mimes an oral sex act that she says the girl is likely fond of performing, then asks if she'll be going to her prom pregnant.
  • After Helen gives Lillian a pre-wedding trip to Paris, Annie screams at both of them for their pretentiousness, intimates that Helen may be a lesbian, and accuses the two of getting their sphincters bleached together.
  • After Annie has an accident, Ted comes to pick her up and calls her his "f*ck buddy." On the drive back to Milwaukee, he briefly drives the car with his crotch. He then tries to convince Annie to perform an oral sex act on him while he is steering. When she refuses and demands to be let out, he does so and then drives away yelling, "You're no longer my Number Three" (meaning she's the third person he calls on a list of women he has sex with regularly).
  • Annie tries to get Rhodes to help her track down Lillian by using a variety of silly ploys and moves, including driving by his parked squad car topless. Her hands are covering her breasts.
  • A sequence that plays out during the closing credits shows Megan seducing Jon the air marshal with a large sandwich. Jon is dressed in very skimpy underpants and wearing an open robe. The scene then cuts to the sandwich lying atop his bare belly and Megan eating it from his crotch area, her back to the camera, so it looks like she is also simulating oral sex.
  • SPOILER ALERT: Rhodes shows up at the end of Lillian's funeral, accepts Annie's apology, and the two kiss long and hard before driving off together.
  • SMOKING
