QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: A bumbling French inspector is assigned to solve a murder and retrieve a valuable diamond known as the Pink Panther.
PLOT:
French soccer coach Yves Gluant (JASON STATHAM) has been murdered on the field following a big victory, and his enormous diamond -- known as the Pink Panther -- has been stolen. Chief Inspector Dreyfus (KEVIN KLINE) believes that if he solves the case, he might just finally win the Medal of Honor after many previous nominations. But he needs someone incompetent to distract the press so that he can get the job done.

Accordingly, he promotes bumpkin Jacques Clouseau (STEVE MARTIN) to Inspector status, assigning Gilbert Ponton (JEAN RENO) as his partner who will report back to Dreyfus on Clouseau's whereabouts and activities. With the lovely Nicole (EMILY MORTIMER) serving as his secretary, the bumbling Clouseau -- who's ignorant about his real role or overzealous detective work -- sets out to solve the crime.

Among his suspects is Gluant's girlfriend, international recording star Xania (BEYONCÉ KNOWLES); her former boyfriend and soccer player Bizu (WILLIAM ABADIE); the team trainer Yuri (HENRY CZERNY); and casino operator Larocque (ROGER REES). As he begins investigating them, he inadvertently causes various comedic complications for Dreyfus and others.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're looking for a goofy comedy, are fans of the original "PP" movies and/or someone in the cast, they might want to see it.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG
For occasional crude and suggestive humor and language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • STEVE MARTIN plays a bumbling French inspector assigned to work a murder case, not for his detective prowess, but because of his bumbling incompetence. Nevertheless, he tries to solve the case, all while falling for Xania and unintentionally causing all sorts of comedic mischief and accidents. He also talks with an exaggeratedly funny French accent that some kids may want to imitate.
  • KEVIN KLINE plays the Chief Inspector who promotes and assigns Clouseau to the case for those various reasons that will distract the press and thus allow him to solve it. Self-serving, he looks down on Clouseau and tries to undermine his efforts.
  • JEAN RENO plays a straight-arrow detective assigned by Dreyfus to keep dibs on Clouseau. He tries to help solve the case, but must put up with Clouseau viewing him as a novice.
  • BEYONCÉ KNOWLES plays Gluant's girlfriend, an international recording star who isn't too shaken up by Gluant's death since she previously discovered he was cheating on her.
  • EMILY MORTIMER plays Clouseau's lovely secretary.
  • HENRY CZERNY plays a soccer team's trainer and one of the suspects of the crime.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this PG-rated comedy. Profanity consists of only a handful of expletives, but several inaudible "f" words are mouthed, while some colorful phrases are also uttered. Comedy-based sexual dialogue, innuendo and misinterpretation (of various actions as sexual in nature when they're not) are present. A woman shows a lot of cleavage in her low-cut outfits, some men are seen in formfitting costumes and a man loses his Viagra type pill down a sink drain after thinking he's going to get intimate with a woman.

Various bad attitudes are present, including from a person who murders two people (not portrayed in a completely realistic fashion, although those sensitive to that and other material -- which would be considered bad and/or more serious in a drama -- might find some of that troubling ). Some brief fighting is also present, as is all sorts of slapstick and other zany style comedy where people are struck and/or injured in various ways and property damage occurs. Some of that behavior (including talking with "funny" accents) might be enticing for some kids to imitate, while some drinking is present, as is some brief crude humor.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, we see some of that from people snapping flash photos.

  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE

  • A man is shot in the head and killed (we don't see the impact, and there's no blood, but we later see the body face down on the floor with a chalk outline around him - although that's played for laughs). We later see a flashback to the killer shooting the gun, but again there's no impact or blood.
  • Nicole pops an entire egg in her mouth, but then begins to choke. Clouseau rushes over and grabs her to perform the Heimlich maneuver on her. He then exaggeratedly lifts her off the floor from behind (the egg pops out) and all of that's played for a sexual joke on the park of the film.

  • Some kids may be enticed to imitate Clouseau's French accent, his way of butchering English words and/or his overall demeanor and other actions (that includes a funny bit where Clouseau tries to say "hamburger," but can't with his accent).
  • A soccer player does a back flip kick to score a goal.
  • We briefly see a shirtless soccer fan (male) wearing body paint.
  • Clouseau wears a pair of magnifying spectacles that make his eyes appear enormous.

  • A secret agent and later Clouseau have flaming drinks.

  • SEX/NUDITY
  • Xania shows a lot of cleavage in various, low-cut outfits she wears during the film.
  • We briefly see a shirtless soccer fan (male) wearing body paint.
  • During the cartoon credits, Clouseau appears nude but then has a superimposed box over his crotch area (we don't see anything), while some cartoon cleavage is briefly seen.
  • Nicole, who's standing on some furniture after hanging a picture, asks Clouseau for help down. He's not sure how to proceed, and he starts to pick her up over his shoulder. • A reporter shows some cleavage.
  • When asked if he gets lonely, Clouseau says no, not really since the Internet (the full implications of that are not made clear).

  • We see miscellaneous cleavage.
  • Clouseau tells a casino man that he wants to look at his antique bowls, but with his heavy accent, it comes out sounding like "balls" and "your big brass balls."
  • Clouseau and Ponton end up platonically having to share a single bed in a hotel room where the two talk about whether they have significant others. Ponton says he's married, but then says, "It's hard." Clouseau suddenly gets nervous and asks, "What is?" but then relaxes as Ponton says, "To meet someone."
  • Clouseau starts to state his email address that starts with "Dr. Knockers."
  • Clouseau tells Ponton that they're in New York so that he can seduce Xania to get her to talk (thinking she might be the murder suspect), adding that he might have to "pump her for information."
  • Doing an audible decoy, Clouseau says "Oh yes, baby, oh yes" (acting as if he's with Xania).

  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • None.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Detective work.
  • Self-serving people.
  • Remakes of films.
  • Slapstick style comedy.
  • VIOLENCE
  • Except for the first several entries below, most of the following is played for comedy (on the part of the film).
  • After his team wins a soccer match, Gluant suddenly falls dead to the ground with a poisoned dart in his neck (no blood).
  • A man is shot in the head and killed (we don't see the impact, and there's no blood, but we later see the body face down on the floor with a chalk outline around it). We later see a flashback to the killer shooting the gun, but again there's no impact or blood.
  • We see the "gas mask bandits" trying to rob a casino while gassing others (one perp throws a person down). A secret agent then zips into the casino (on a zip line) and shoots the bandits with sleeping darts.
  • Ponton and Clouseau encounter three bouncer type men, with Clouseau acting like he's hitting them, but it's really Ponton who does so, hitting and even flipping one of them.
  • Clouseau jumps down onto a suspect.
  • A running gag has Clouseau telling Ponton that he will attack him at any moment as part of his training to keep him vigilant. Accordingly, Clouseau tries to hit Ponton who avoids that and punches Clouseau in the face. Later, he tries to jump down on him from the wall, but misses and lands hard on the floor. Later, we hear the sound of Ponton hitting Clouseau in the dark after the latter tries to attack him.
  • Slapstick and/or zany comedy material includes the following:
  • Clouseau places a police light on the top of his car, but it flies off and hits an old woman in the head.
  • A wheelchair (with a person in it) goes zipping backwards down an incline and crashes through a fence or gate (after Clouseau attaches the battery cables backwards).
  • During the cartoon credits, animated Clouseau whacks a credits-based name but has another fall on him; a bomb rolls up near him and he draws his gun, only to have it fire when he puts it down inside his pants; and the Pink Panther slaps Clouseau after the latter points a gun at the former.
  • While parallel parking his tiny car (in a huge space), Clouseau repeatedly backs it into the car behind him and then pulls forward to hit the car in front of him, eventually causing the other cars' bumpers to fall off (done without maliciousness on his part).
  • When Clouseau flips open his police wallet, his badge flies out and its pin impales Dreyfus in the chest.
  • Thinking a spy or villain might be in the room, Clouseau does karate chops to a large curtain that he then ends up yanking off its rod.
  • Thinking a lamp is bugged, Clouseau cuts a wire in it, causing him to be shocked.
  • A bunch of bike riders wipe out in a race.
  • Clouseau kicks a soccer ball that ricochets off something and strikes him hard on the head.
  • When a nervous suspect asks Clouseau what "the box" is (a thing with electrical cables attached to it), Clouseau demos what it can do by putting those jumper cables down his own pants, causing him to be shocked there. We then see Clouseau walking along and then in a car, both times with smoke still coming from his clothed crotch area.
  • Clouseau opens his car door, unaware that a biker is approaching. The biker then hits the open door and flips over it. Moments later, a huge metal globe rolls by and strikes that biker as well.
  • Thinking someone's in his office, Clouseau checks the door frame, with Nicole closing the door from the inside, not knowing Clouseau was there. We then see him in pain, hanging from his one finger that's stuck between the door and the frame.
  • An egg flies out a window and accidentally hits a biker on his head. He then crashes into a small cart that then explodes.
  • A young woman goes to kiss Clouseau, but misses when he stands up and she falls to the floor.
  • As Clouseau rests his arm on a large aquarium, a school of piranhas attacks his elbow that's dipped into the water (they just tear up his clothing at his elbow).
  • After Clouseau gets his hands stuck in two vases, he asks a man if the one that's still stuck is worth anything. The man says it's an imitation, so Clouseau smashes it again a table (which turns out to be priceless), causing it to crash to the floor in pieces.
  • Dreyfus tries to snoop around Clouseau's office, but then hides when he hears him approach. Clouseau then realizes someone is hiding behind the curtain, so he takes a chair and smashes it twice against Dreyfus (not realizing it's him). Thinking the suspect is wearing a mask to look like Dreyfus, Clouseau then tries to pull off the "mask" (thus pulling on Dreyfus's skin) and then slams Dreyfus's head to a table.
  • While demonstrating a pointer, Clouseau accidentally hits Dreyfus on the head with it, knocking him from his chair.
  • Clouseau and Ponton follow Xania and repeatedly lift newspapers in front of their faces so that she doesn't see them. During this, Clouseau accidentally walks into a subway station entrance and falls down the stairs.
  • Clouseau cuts a small wire in Xania's hotel room that causes a chandelier down below them to fall from the ceiling and crash to the floor (he didn't know that was going to happen).
  • Thinking they're going to get intimate, Clouseau goes into the bathroom and tries to take a Viagra type pill, but it ends up slipping from his hand and goes down the drain. He then ends up tearing out the sink pipe, causing a big leak, while the pill then pops out, lands in his flaming drink and then causes some curtains to catch on fire. When Xania wonders what's going on, Clouseau make some comment about getting in the mood for love. But he gets a shock from holding a hair dryer, and the weight of the water then causes the floor to collapse, sending it and Clouseau down to the hotel lobby below where he crashes onto the front counter (but is okay).
  • A police dog lunges at Clouseau in an airport, but the shot freezes as a still photo as it grabs his arm.
  • After removing her glasses, Nicole walks face-first into a tree.
  • Clouseau accidentally opens a door into Ponton.
  • Dreyfus gets his coat caught in Ponton's car and is then yanked along behind the vehicle. We later see Dreyfus in the hospital, with a heavily bruised face and various limbs in casts. Clouseau then tries to adjust his hospital bed, but inadvertently causes Dreyfus great pain in the process (including accidentally placing his knee into Dreyfus's crotch). The hospital bed then starts rolling away, goes down a stairwell and then blasts out through a window, landing in a nearby body of water.
