QUICK TAKE:
Horror: A group of people race against the clock to find and contain a deadly virus all while dealing with hundreds of undead zombies and other mutant creatures that repeatedly attack them.
PLOT:
Somewhere below Raccoon City resides a complex known as the Hive. Run by the powerful Umbrella Corporation - a leading supplier of computer technology and medical and health care products - the Hive is home for more than 500 researchers and scientists who work on covert operations involving military technology, medical experimentation and bio-weaponry.

Overseen by a powerful supercomputer known as the Red Queen (voice of MICHAELA DICKER), things seem fine in the Hive until one of their latest projects - known as the T-virus - goes awry. Accordingly, the Red Queen puts the place in lockdown and uses nerve gas to kill everyone inside, all to prevent the now airborne virus from escaping the facility.

Meanwhile, in a manor above one of the secret entrances to the Hive, Alice (MILLA JOVOVICH) is waking up in the shower, unaware of her identity or location. After discovering that she's apparently married to a man named Spence (JAMES PUREFOY), various commandos raid the manor and want Alice's report. She has no idea what they're talking about, which also holds true for Spence, while the commandos cuff another man, Matt (ERIC MABIUS), who's also there.

After being informed of what's occurred, Alice and the others accompany the commandos - who include Rain (MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ), Kaplan (MARTIN CREWES), One (COLIN SALMON) and J.D. (PASQUALE ALEARDI) among others - down into the Hive where they must find and contain the virus before it infects the rest of the world.

Unbeknownst to them, however, the virus has an effect on the dead - it reanimates them. Thus, from that point on, and as Alice slowly begins to remember her role working for the Umbrella Corporation, she and the others race against the clock to accomplish their mission. While doing so, they must deal with the Red Queen's defensive measures as well as hundreds of undead zombies and other mutant creatures that repeatedly attack and can infect them with just one bite or scratch.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of someone in the cast or zombie-based horror thrillers, they just might.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For strong sci-fi/horror violence, language, and brief sexuality/nudity.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • MILLA JOVOVICH plays a woman who awakens with amnesia and then finds herself in the middle of a nightmare as she slowly remembers the past and who she is. When she finally does, she kills various zombies.
  • MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ plays the standard "tough chick" commando who seemingly shows no fear in dispatching those who are attacking her and others. She uses strong profanity.
  • ERIC MABIUS plays another person who finds himself stuck in the maelstrom and tries to get out alive. He uses some strong profanity.
  • JAMES PUREFOY plays a man in the same predicament who may or may not be Alice's husband.
  • MARTIN CREWES, COLIN SALMON, and PASQUALE ALEARDI play other people similarly trying to stay alive and accomplish their mission.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a quick look at the content in this R-rated horror film. Profanity consists of the use of at least 14 "f" words, while other expletives and various colorful phrases are also uttered. Some brief, sexually related dialogue is present, as are very brief flashback images of a sexual encounter or encounters. Some brief, partial nudity (including that of female full frontal) is also present.

Violence consists of many bloody and/or gory zombies attacking humans who then use various means (gunfire, breaking necks, etc.) to dispatch them. Various humans are also killed (by those attacking zombies or other mutant creatures, and in one scene by a laser beam that separates their bodies or body parts from the rest of them). All of that has very bloody/gory results, and those scenes and many others (including a great deal of jump scenes) may be unsettling, suspenseful or downright scary to viewers.

Should you still be concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, you may want to examine our detailed listings more closely for more specific information regarding the content present in it.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • None.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • Alice has some bruises on her shoulder.
  • After a laser slices his hand, we see bloody stumps on a man's fingers.
  • We see a bloody line forming around a woman's neck after a laser has sliced her there. Her head then falls off and we briefly see the bloody/meaty stump.
  • Another man tries to avoid the next pass but the laser beam suddenly turns into a large, interlaced pattern that slices through him with bloody results (and we then briefly see chunks of flesh falling away from his face).
  • Rain's hand is bloody after being bitten by a zombie that has some blood in its mouth. We then see some blood on the floor.
  • A bloody zombie approaches the group and its ankle is broken (with the foot turned sideways). Other zombies then show up and are bloody/gory to varying degrees, including some who have part of their faces missing.
  • Alice encounters various Dobermans that appear to have been skinned alive and are thus very bloody (but still alive), with one also appearing to be missing part of its neck.
  • More zombies show varying degrees of bloodiness and goriness.
  • Rain's arm and hand are bloody.
  • We see Rain vomiting.
  • We see a dead man's very bloody face.
  • A man's neck is bloody after being bitten there.
  • A mutant creature attacks a man and then apparently feeds on him (we see a lot of blood on the platform and on the man).
  • A man has some bloody scrapes on his arm that we see several times, including once where some bristles or similar objects suddenly erupt from those wounds.
  • Alice has some bloody wounds on her.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • The person responsible for purposefully allowing the virus to spread through the lab obviously has bad attitudes (and later turns on the others), as do those who created and tested it (although we only briefly see the latter group).
  • The zombies come across as having both for wanting to kill and eat the humans, but they're acting more from "instinct" than planned or thought-out maliciousness.
  • Those who don't like animal research might not like a flashback scene where researchers inject a rabbit with needles.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence" and "Blood/Gore" may be unsettling, suspenseful or scary to some viewers as well. In addition, some viewers with low tolerance levels for such material may find the entire film (with the humans trying to avoid the attacking zombies and other mutant creatures and get out of the Hive before they're permanently sealed inside) in one or more of those ways.
  • Workers in the hive panic as the Red Queen computer begins closing off corridors, locking doors and shutting down elevators. Those in the latter panic when their elevator car suddenly goes into a freefall before suddenly stopping at just the third floor, while those in an airtight lab panic when the sprinkler system begins to flood the area.
  • The people in the above elevator manage to pry the doors open just a bit, allowing a woman to pass her head and shoulders out before becoming stuck. The car then begins to shift and the woman panics as the car drops a few feet, stopping just before her head is severed. After a moment, the car suddenly reverses direction and goes up, with the woman presumably being decapitated (the scene ends before we see anything).
  • As some suspenseful music plays, Alice slowly walks through a house she doesn't recognize.
  • As Rain tries to fix the power for a transport train, she thinks she hears something from down below her and slowly goes to look (followed by a jump scene).
  • Various characters find themselves in a hallway where a narrow, horizontal laser beam forms and then approaches them. After it severs a man's fingers and decapitates a woman (we see both and their aftermath), the others then prepare for trying to elude its next pass. A man tries to jump over the next one but it moves up and cuts him in half (we don't see the aftermath), while another man tries to avoid the next pass but the laser beam suddenly turns into a large, interlaced pattern that slices through him with bloody results (and we then briefly see chunks of flesh falling away from his face).
  • Rain thinks she hears something and goes off to investigate. A zombie then attacks her, biting her hand.
  • Many zombies then surround the group, with one trying to attack Rain who breaks its neck. The group then opens fire on them with handguns and machine guns, hitting many zombies, but they keep on coming. A nearby container then explodes, knocking zombies and humans to the floor (with one zombie then partially being on fire). During this, one of the humans tries to unlock the handcuffs holding his arms behind him while sitting on the floor and kicking a zombie that's coming after him.
  • Alice encounters various Dobermans that appear to have been skinned alive and are thus very bloody (but still alive). One then chases after her through a corridor where she encounters a zombie that she knocks down with a roundhouse kick. The bloody dog then chases her into a room where she encounters more bloody dogs. She then shoots many of them and kicks a last one (after running along a wall and then spinning around to do so).
  • A dead girl comes up behind a man and initially acts benign, but then tries to attack and kill him (Alice knocks it out and off him).
  • The humans walk across the top of a large ventilation pipe while trying to elude the zombies below them. Inevitably, the pipe's supports begin to break, thus endangering some of the humans. Two of them eventually fall into the mass of zombies and the others try to rescue them.
  • A human prepares to shoot himself in the mouth rather than face being killed by the zombies.
  • Those who don't like animal research might not like a flashback scene where researchers inject a rabbit with needles.
  • A mutant creature attacks a man and then apparently feeds on him (we see a lot of blood on the floor and on the man).
  • As that mutant creature tries to break through some glass, the computer says that she'll let the survivors through a door if she can have one human life. Rain, who's been scratched and thus infected, tells the others to kill her for their chance of freedom. As Alice raises an ax she's carrying, she must decide what to do as the situation becomes more precarious and time is running out.
  • Alice prepares to shoot a companion who may or may not be turning into a zombie.
  • A large mutant creature attacks a train car from the outside, with its claws tearing through the sides. The creature then yanks one person from the train, and then knocks a large metal door open that lands on another man. Alice shoots it in the head several times, but it then grabs her with its long tongue and begins pulling her toward its large mouth. A man then runs a collection of large metal pipes into the creature, with Alice grabbing one of them and impaling the creature's tongue to the floor. A hatch door is opened and the creature then falls to and is dragged along the tracks below the train, eventually catching on fire before the closing hatch severs its tongue.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Handguns/Machine Guns: Carried and/or used to threaten, wound or kill others. See "Violence" for details.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "What the f*ck are you talking about?" "F*ck off," "What the f*ck is that?" "Get us the f*ck out of here," "That's bullsh*t," "What the hell /is going on/is this place?" "Blow me," "Poor bastards," "(Homicidal) Bitch (about a computer) and "Your boyfriend's a real asshole."
  • JUMP SCENES
  • Several instances of sudden music or sounds might startle some viewers in various tense/suspenseful scenes.
  • A person suddenly surprises Rain (accompanied by sound).
  • A body suddenly floats by a large window in a flooded room. Moments later, the eyes on that body suddenly open and the hand moves.
  • A person suddenly surprises Alice.
  • Alice is suddenly behind another person.
  • A bloody dog suddenly comes through a window.
  • A zombie is suddenly on the other side of a window.
  • Rain pushes a human man backwards only to have him suddenly be grabbed from behind by zombies.
  • A creature suddenly shows up on the other side of some glass.
  • A presumably dead man suddenly comes alive.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • An extreme amount of ominous and suspenseful music plays in the film.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • None.
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 14 "f" words, 6 "s" words, 1 slang term for sex ("get laid"), 5 hells, 3 asses (1 used with "hole"), 2 S.O.B.s, 3 uses of "Jesus," 2 of "Oh my God" and 1 use each of "God," "Jesus Christ" and "Oh God" as exclamations.
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • We see Alice lying nude in the shower (having passed out) with the detached shower curtain partially covering her (we see the side of her bare hip and side). We see the side of her bare butt and then brief glimpses of the side of her bare breast as she puts a robe on.
  • Although said in a taunting/derogatory fashion, Rain tells a man, "Blow me."
  • We see brief and somewhat disorienting views of a head and shoulders sex scene involving Alice and Spence (with quick shots of both on top and including some brief, sexual sounds).
  • Rain jokes that when she gets out of their predicament, she's "going to get laid." One of the men then jokingly says she might want to get cleaned up first.
  • We see another brief flashback of a sex scene between Alice and Spence (seen in a torso shot), and then her in bed afterwards (her bare back is visible).
  • As Alice comes to in a lab, we see her with what looks like a paper gown covering her front and back, but not her sides, thus offering views of the side of her bare butt and breast. As she then crawls and/or lies on the floor (somewhat curled up), the paper gown falls away from her and we see brief, lower frontal nudity.
  • SMOKING
  • None.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • A man discovers that his sister is dead.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • The notion of zombies.
  • Viruses.
  • Whether computers will ever become powerful and/or intelligent enough to act like the computer in this film.
  • The various illogical/idiotic elements in the movie.
  • VIOLENCE
  • People are presumably injured and/or killed when their elevator car goes out of control and slams into the end of the elevator shaft (we only see the car). People in another elevator are smashed to the floor when their car goes into a freefall but then suddenly stops on a lower floor.
  • As an elevator car suddenly reverses direction and goes up, a woman is presumably decapitated (the scene ends before we see anything) as her head and shoulders are out between the doors.
  • The computer sends out a gas that kills several hundred workers in the lab (we see them choking and falling to the floor).
  • Commandos burst through windows (breaking them) and knock a man down, cuffing him and holding guns to his head.
  • A zombie attacks Rain, biting her hand, and J.D. then throws that zombie aside and holds his gun on her, threatening to shoot if she doesn't back off. The zombie doesn't, so he shoots it several times in the leg, but it keeps coming until Rain blasts it with machine gun fire, knocking it backwards.
During this, one of the humans tries to unlock the handcuffs holding his arms behind him while sitting on the floor and kicking a zombie that's coming after him (with his pants leg eventually catching on fire).
  • Various zombies grab a human and pull him into their throng, while other humans try to pull him back out.
  • Rain pushes a human man backwards only to have him suddenly be grabbed from behind by zombies. The humans then battle the zombies, with Alice breaking several of their necks. One man is then bitten on the leg and Rain is bitten again, and she shoots one of the zombies.
  • A man shoots a zombie.
  • A man holds his gun on Alice and others. A zombie then attacks him from behind (biting him on the neck) and another man then grabs him, but the first man regains control and then leaves.
  • A mutant creature attacks a man and then apparently feeds on him (we see a lot of blood on the floor and on the man).
  • Alice smashes a computer monitor with an ax.
  • Although we don't see the actual impact or results, Alice apparently decapitates a zombie with a blow from an ax.
  • A zombie attacks a man and tries to bite him on the neck, prompting Alice to shoot the zombie in the forehead.
  • Alice fights with several people who take away her companion (she hits and kicks them).
