QUICK TAKE:
Comedy/Action: Beverly Hills' favorite cop returns from Detroit to help his friends bring down the skilled criminals who tried to kill his former police captain.
PLOT:
Axel Foley (EDDIE MURPHY) is hot on the trail of credit card fraudsters in Detroit when he hears that his former police captain, Andrew Bogomil (RONNY COX) has been gunned down in Los Angeles. After learning that Bogomil was leading the investigation into several very serious crimes, Axel becomes convinced Bogomil was on to something and heads back to California to help his friends on his old force solve the crimes.

Leaving his undercover work in Detroit in the less-than-capable hands of his goofy colleague, Detective Jeffrey Friedman (PAUL REISER), much to the chagrin of his boss, Inspector Todd (GIL HILL), Axel rounds up his old partner Rosewood (JUDGE REINHOLD) and Sergeant Taggart (JOHN ASHTON) to finish the job Bogomil started. Facing strong opposition from the new and extremely arrogant police chief, Harold Lutz (ALLEN GARFIELD), the trio follows a trail of clues that leads to some prominent Los Angeles citizens, including the owner of a swanky gun club, Maxwell Dent (JURGEN PROCHNOW).

Together with his partners in crime, including lover Karla Fry (BRIGITTE NIELSEN), Dent is running a high-stakes arms trading operation in plain sight and committing dangerous robberies to fund the plan. With a little help from Bogomil's daughter, Jan (ALICE ADAIR), Foley, Rosewood and Taggart uncover the truth and earn accolades from the Mayor, Ted Egan (ROBERT RIDGELY).

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of the first film and/or Eddie Murphy (think "Shrek," "Dr. Doolittle," "The Nutty Professor," "Mulan," and the like) they may want to see this.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For language and some violence.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • EDDIE MURPHY plays Detective Axel Foley, a fast-talking, quick-thinking cop who doesn't hide the fact that he wasn't always on the right side of the law. Known for his "unconventional" style of police work, Axel often engages in questionable legal behavior to gain access to people or information. His regular antics include lying and stealing, but are typically played for laughs, as Axel has a heart of gold and generally tries to do the right thing. Axel uses frequent profanity, shoots various weapons, and is quite vocal about his penchant for big-breasted women.
  • JUDGE REINHOLD plays Detective Billy Rosewood, Axel's former partner. Young, fresh-faced and a little odd, Billy takes a lot of good-natured ribbing from his friends and a lot of flak from his superiors. In particular, he finds himself the target of regular abuse from the chief of police, who shoots his ideas down at every turn. Billy, a fan of the "Rambo" movies, has an impressive weapons collection that is humorous in the film, but even in jest, his friends all imply he should seek help for his apparent addiction. Billy uses profanity and numerous weapons.
  • JOHN ASHTON plays Sergeant John Taggart, Billy's immediate boss and the third member of Axel's crime-fighting trio. Taggart serves as a sort of conscience for the group, often trying to talk his friends out of whatever mischief they are about to get into. In the end, he joins in to help them despite his misgivings. Taggart has an on-again, off-again relationship with his wife, who we never meet, and while the discussions about his always-impending divorce are always in jest, there is an implication that his attitude towards women may not always be positive. Taggart drinks alcohol, swears and shoots and kills a woman.
  • PAUL REISER plays Detective Jeffrey Friedman, Axel's hapless buddy on the Detroit police force who is constantly begging Axel to let him go undercover with him. When Axel goes to California, he entrusts Friedman to handle his "undercover" work while he's gone. Naturally, things go awry and Friedman lands himself and Axel in hot water with their boss. Friedman uses some profanity.
  • ALLEN GARFIELD plays Los Angeles Police Chief Harold Lutz, a verbally abusive and obnoxious man who lets his ego get in the way of good police work and constantly harasses his staff. His profanity-laden tirades draw the attention of the mayor, who does not approve.
  • GIL HILL plays Inspector Douglas Todd, Axel's boss in Detroit. He bankrolls Axel's crazy schemes to go "deep undercover" and issues constant warnings about Axel's job security if he doesn't start making some arrests. Despite the fact that he's often yelling, and using frequent profanity, we can tell that he actually likes Axel deep down.
  • JURGEN PROCHNOW plays Maxwell Dent, owner of the Beverly Hills Gun Club and other prominent locations that serve as fronts for his dangerous arms-trading operation. He orders people murdered and smokes cigars.
  • BRIGITTE NIELSEN plays Karla Fry, a tall, leggy bombshell who is Dent's lover and the mastermind behind his crime sprees. She uses various weapons and shoots and wounds several people, including Captain Bogomil. She also lies and deceives people to get what she wants.
  • ROBERT RIDGELY plays Los Angeles Mayor Ted Egan. He sticks up for the LAPD staff when Chief Lutz verbally abuses them, and ultimately fires him for his attitude.
  • ALICE ADAIR plays Jan Bogomil, the Captain's daughter. Overcome by grief at her father's wounding, she works to help Axel and his friends uncover information about Dent's business dealings.
