QUICK TAKE:
Drama: A young and ambitious stock broker becomes corrupted by an unscrupulous corporate raider in the mid-1980s.
PLOT:
In 1985, Bud Fox (CHARLIE SHEEN) is a low-level stockbroker in Manhattan whose day consists of cold-calling potential investors for his boss, Lou (HAL HOLBROOK), and jockeying with fellow brokers Marvin (JOHN C. McGINLEY) and Dan (FRANKLIN COVER). He dreams of being on the other end of that phone and being one of the major money men, like his idol, the ruthless broker and corporate pirate Gordon Gekko (MICHAEL DOUGLAS).

He manages to get five minutes with the man on his birthday and uses some insider knowledge of the small airline company his mechanic father, Carl (MARTIN SHEEN), works at to impress him. Soon, Gekko has taken Bud under his wing and is seducing him with money, limousines, private jets, and beautiful women. Among the most beautiful is interior designer and art broker, Darien (DARYL HANNAH), who he strikes up a relationship with.

When he learns that Gekko has just been using him to gain a foothold into his father's company and reap millions at the expense of the airline's employees, Bud sets an elaborate trap for the corporate raider using his arch rival Larry Wildman (TERENCE STAMP). To do so, though, Bud has to fight just as dirty as Gekko ever has and the price may be his soul.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Older teens on their way to college and with an interest in business and finance may be enticed to rent it.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
No official reason is available from the MPAA, but we'd guess it's for profanity and sexually related material.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • CHARLIE SHEEN plays a young stockbroker who becomes blinded by his own greed and quest for wealth and success to the point where he puts his father's company in jeopardy at the hands of a corporate pirate. He is not above breaking the law to get what he wants, even though he clearly knows right from wrong. He is a casual drinker and smoker, dabbles briefly in cocaine with a prostitute, and uses profanity.
  • MICHAEL DOUGLAS plays the corporate raider who uses Bud to advance his own schemes. He is a ruthless businessman who only deals in transactions in the millions. He is a hard drinker, a chain smoker, and exudes wealth and power. He is a husband and father, but clearly enjoys affairs on the side.
  • MARTIN SHEEN plays Bud's blue-collar father and de facto conscience in the movie. He sees through Gordon Gekko's schemes and tries to warn Bud that he is being led astray, but his son ignores him. He is a heavy smoker who has health problems as a result and eventually has a second heart attack.
  • DARYL HANNAH plays an interior decorator and art broker who previously had a sexual relationship with Gordon Gekko and is now romantically involved with Bud. She is very materialistic, wearing the trendiest fashions of the 1980s and states unequivocally that she will not settle for "just getting by."
  • HAL HOLBROOK plays Bud's kindly boss at the investment firm where he toils daily, cold-calling potential investors. He conducts business in a honest manner and is held up as a direct contrast to Gekko.
  • JOHN C. McGINLEY plays a fellow broker at Bud's firm who becomes envious of his friend's success. He is not as driven or as intelligent as Bud, which ultimately brings the two into conflict when he is unable to keep up with Bud's wheeling and dealing.
  • FRANKLIN COVER plays a tragic veteran broker who is no longer able to keep up with the fast pace of day-in, day-out stock trading and is fired as a result. He is a smoker.
  • TERENCE STAMP plays Gekko's ruthless arch nemesis, a Brit who torpedoed one of Gekko's most promising deals years earlier and Gekko has tried to get him back ever since. He becomes instrumental in Bud's plot to exact revenge against Gekko for using him to dismantle his father's company.
  • SEAN YOUNG plays the bubbly wife of Gekko who appears either accepting or unknowing of her husband's flashy, ruthless ways.
  • JAMES SPADER plays a Wall Street lawyer and former classmate of Bud's, who isn't above using insider information to make a quick buck in the stock market. But he stops short of giving Bud direct information in return on the clients his firm represents.

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this drama that has been rated R. Profanity consists of at least 17 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Some sexually related dialogue is present along with one scene of a couple having sex in silhouette, at least three other scenes of implied sex, and a scene in the back of the limo in which a prostitute begins to perform an oral sex act on the main character.

Violence consists of a man being punched hard in the face four times and manhandled, which has a fairly bloody result.

Bad attitudes are present throughout, as is much potentially imitative behavior and various thematic elements. White-collar crime factors heavily into the plot. And there is an extreme amount of drinking and smoking present throughout the entire film. Those with September 11 sensitivities should know that there are multiple shots of the since-destroyed World Trade Center in the film. Tense family material is also present.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.
