QUICK TAKE:
Drama: A teenage boy transplanted to Southern California from New Jersey has trouble with a bully peeved about him horning in on his ex-girlfriend, and learns karate from a handyman/martial arts expert in order to try to defeat the bully.
PLOT:
Daniel LaRusso (RALPH MACCHIO), a teenager, moves with his mother Lucille (RANDEE HELLER) from New Jersey to Southern California for her new job with a computer company, and isn't happy with it. For one, he doesn't think he'll know anyone there and was more comfortable in New Jersey rather than what he declares are the "rules" that California lives by. He meets Freddy Fernandez (ISRAEL JUARBE), who's merely a conduit for Daniel to meet Ali (ELISABETH SHUE) at the beach, as well as her ex-boyfriend, Johnny Lawrence (WILLIAM ZABKA), who doesn't like Daniel talking to her and apparently getting to know her, especially when he's trying to get back together with her, though that desire isn't mutual.

Johnny and his gang, who also practice karate together in a dojo led by a ruthless instructor, John Kreese (MARTIN KOVE), seek to make Daniel's life more difficult than he already finds it, causing him to get into a bicycle accident and later beating him up in front of his apartment complex, before Mr. Miyagi (NORIYUKI "PAT" MORITA) jumps over the fence behind the group and defeats them all.

Besides being the handyman for Daniel's building, Mr. Miyagi is also skilled in karate and when Mr. Miyagi makes the offer in the dojo for Daniel to face down Johnny in an upcoming tournament, he proceeds to teach Daniel everything he needs to know, including that one learns karate not to fight, but so that it's not necessary to fight.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Karate fanatics will definitely want to see it, and those who are fans of anyone in the cast may also be interested.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG
No official reason is given, but it's likely for violence, language and brief drug content.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • RALPH MACCHIO plays Daniel LaRusso, newly arrived in Southern California from New Jersey with his mother who decided to move because of a job with a computer company. Daniel initially doesn't like what California is, with life being tougher for him, especially when he meets Ali, and her ex-boyfriend Johnny, who doesn't like him at all for dashing his attempts to make up with Ali. He meets Mr. Miyagi, the handyman of his apartment complex, and a karate expert, who teaches him all there is to know about karate, ahead of a tournament that finds him fighting against Johnny. Along the way, he gradually wins over Ali. He uses profanity and drinks briefly.
  • NORIYUKI "PAT" MORITA plays Mr. Kesuke Miyagi, the handyman for Daniel's apartment building, as well as an expert in karate, which is very helpful to Daniel when he's being attacked by Johnny and his fellow punks, and Mr. Miyagi beats all of them up. Mr. Miyagi first notices Daniel practicing karate when he comes to fix the sink in the apartment, but after the attack, Mr. Miyagi negotiates with the instructor at Johnny's dojo that Daniel not be harmed in any way before an upcoming karate tournament. He then sets out to teach Daniel everything he needs to know about karate, making him do chores that reflect the basic moves he needs to learn, and imparting wisdom that seems not only to relate to karate, but also to life. Mr. Miyagi drinks a few times and appears drunk and later passed out, though it's because of a sad event that happened in his life, of which he observes the anniversary.
  • ELISABETH SHUE plays Ali Mills, a complete contrast to Daniel, who lives in Reseda. Ali lives among the upper-class, with a rich-looking house and rich, snobbish parents, her father especially who doesn't approve of Daniel and lets her know it without making it too obvious. Ali likes Daniel because he's completely different from the kind of person she's dated before, namely Johnny, her ex-boyfriend, who goes after Daniel for getting to know Ali, when he wants to make up with her. Daniel isn't comfortable with Ali's lifestyle, simply because he doesn't believe he can match up to it, not realizing that's not what Ali wants. It causes some friction at one point, but nothing overly worrisome between the two of them.
  • WILLIAM ZABKA plays Johnny Lawrence, who rides onto the beach with his gang on motorcycles, spots Daniel talking to his ex-girlfriend, Ali, and doesn't like it at all, because he wanted to make up with her. Johnny lets him know that right away with physical violence that leaves Johnny with a black eye and later, Johnny and his gang attack Daniel right in front of his apartment building, that is until Mr. Miyagi comes to his rescue. Johnny learns karate at a dojo led by a merciless instructor and that's possibly also where some of Johnny's behaviors come from. He uses profanity.
  • MARTIN KOVE plays John Kreese, the instructor at the dojo where Johnny and his gang attend classes. Whereas Mr. Miyagi believes in a kind of peace in learning karate---and also that karate is learned so that one does not have to fight---Kreese tells his students that in a fight, you show no mercy. An opponent should be fought until there's nothing left of that person. During the tournament, he instructs Bobby, one of Johnny's cohorts, to put Daniel "out of commission," even though it will mean that Bobby will be disqualified. During Johnny's match with Daniel, he reminds him that there should be no mercy.
  • RANDEE HELLER plays Lucille LaRusso, Daniel's mother, who's moved him and herself out to California for a job she has with a computer company, and she believes that a new life in California is a better life for both of them, despite the troubles Daniel faces early on.
  • RON THOMAS plays Bobby Brown, one of Johnny's cohorts and the one most visible throughout the film, who fights Daniel at the tournament.
  • ISRAEL JUARBE plays Freddy Fernandez, whom Daniel meets after accidentally knocking him down by kicking open the wooden gate to the apartment building, not knowing that Freddy was standing behind it. His only purpose is as the conduit that gets Daniel to the beach, and eggs him on to talk to Ali.
  • JULI FIELDS plays Susan, one of Ali's friends who doesn't approve of Daniel.
  • DANA ANDERSEN plays Barbara, another of Ali's friends who also isn't impressed with Daniel.

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:

Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Daniel's mother, Lucille, tells one of her nephews to not forget to "tell Uncle Louie that I left the red wine and the Parmesan in the refrigerator."

  • Johnny sits in a bathroom stall, rolling a joint.
  • Beer bottles sit on the wheel cover of Mr. Miyagi's truck and both guys responsible for it hold beers. The guy wearing the cap drinks from his bottle and appears drunk. Mr. Miyagi asks the men to remove the bottles and the guy in the cap says, "Kindly do it yourself, Mr. Moto," and makes a derogatory face at him. Mr. Miyagi aims and slices his hand across the tops of the bottles, shattering them and walks to his side of the truck. The guy wearing the cap removes the bottles.
  • Mr. Miyagi pours a drink in two glasses, clinks the glass closest to the photo of a Japanese woman, and drinks as Daniel is seen walking in.

  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Johnny Lawrence, who bullies Daniel on the beach after he arrives in California, and at school, is from the same social class as his ex-girlfriend Ali and they both go to the same country club. The difference is that while Ali likes Daniel, Johnny hates him for trying to butt in on his trying to get back with Ali and shows his displeasure by beating up on Daniel at the beach. Problems ensue at school and outside of school that spur Daniel on to learn karate from Mr. Miyagi and enter a tournament that pits him against Johnny's gang and finally, Johnny himself. He's ruthless in fighting Johnny, and is also egged on by Kreese, a merciless sensei at the local dojo who believes that when there is a fight, you show no mercy. That certainly helps make Johnny angrier and more dangerous to Daniel.

  • One of Johnny's gang shouts at Ali, "Must be 'Take a Worm for a Walk' Week," in reference to her walking with Daniel.
  • As Daniel and Mr. Miyagi walk back to the truck after Daniel's spent some time in the ocean trying to balance, a belligerent drunk guy wearing a baseball cap says to his friend, "Hey lookie! Kid's got a pet Nip," being racist toward Mr. Miyagi. Mr. Miyagi asks the men to remove the beer bottles from his truck and the guy in the cap says, "Kindly do it yourself, Mr. Moto," and makes a squished, derogatory face at Mr. Miyagi.
  • Ali's father asks her who she's going out with and after she says, "It's a friend," he replies, "Not that boy from Reseda," demonstrating not only his wealth, but also his snobbishness toward Daniel.
  • In the locker room before the tournament, one of Johnny's gang says to Daniel, "Well, well, well, look who we have here. Our little friend "Danielle." What's the matter? Mommy not here to dress you?"
  • Kreese tells Bobby that he wants Daniel out of commission, over his objections that he'll be disqualified. In the match, Bobby jumps up and kicks Daniel on the leg, and Daniel cries out in pain and falls. Bobby tries to apologize loudly to Daniel, saying that he didn't mean it.
  • Kreese says to Johnny, "No mercy," about defeating Daniel.
