(2014) (Dwayne Johnson, Ian McShane) (PG-13)
- QUICK TAKE:
- Action: The legendary warrior Hercules and his band of mercenaries come to the aid of a kingdom at war and discover a deeper treachery.
- PLOT:
- All of ancient Greece knows the legend of Hercules (DWAYNE JOHNSON), the half-son of the god Zeus credited with the slaying of numerous mythic beasts. At one point, he was the favored son of Athens. But that was before rumors swirled that his temper flared out of control and he killed his wife and children. Cast out by King Eurystheus (JOSEPH FIENES), he now travels the land as a mercenary with a band of five cutthroats, eager to do battle for a price.
His companions include Amphiaraus (IAN McSHANE), a seer who has foretold of his own death but is often vague when it comes to everyone else's destinies; Autolycus (RUFUS SEWELL), a quippy, yet cunning blade-man who is completely out for profit; Atalanta (INGRID BOLSO BERDAL), an Amazon extremely handy with a bow and arrow; Tydeus (AKSEL HENNIE), a traumatized warrior whose entire people were slaughtered in battle; and Iolaus (REECE RITCHIE), Hercules' nephew who is gifted with telling the tall tales and furthering the legend of his uncle to all who will listen.
They agree to help Ergenia (REBECCA FERGUSON), a princess who enlists them to help her father, Lord Cotys (JOHN HURT), and her young son, Arius (ISAAC ANDREWS), save their kingdom from a marauder named Rhesus (TOBIAS SANTELMANN). Hercules, though, soon learns that he may be fighting for the wrong side and that this treachery may extend all the way back to the shadowy figure who framed him years earlier.
