QUICK TAKE:
Drama: A thirty-something man falls in love while dealing with memories of his recently deceased father, who didn't reveal his homosexuality until he was in his 70s.
PLOT:
Oliver (EWAN McGREGOR) is an introverted thirty-something artist who has not had good relationships with women, but seems to have fallen in love at long last with the emotionally complicated actress Anna (MELANIE LAURENT). As the film opens, though, he is still dealing with memories of his recently deceased father, Hal (CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER), who revealed late in his life that he has been a closet homosexual his whole life.

Via flashback, we also get to know Oliver's mother, Georgia (MARY PAGE KELLER), who died a few years earlier. She was a woman who knew of her husband's sexual preference but tried to help "fix" him. As a result, she lived a passionless existence and sought to be kooky and crazy in other parts of her life.

After her death, Hal embraced the homosexual lifestyle and got involved with a much younger man named Andy (GORAN VISNJIC). Oliver struggles to find the same measure of happiness and inner fulfillment his father had in the waning months of his life as terminal cancer ate away at him.
