QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: Two former friends -- one who's still a stoner while the other has moved on from that lifestyle -- are reunited as they spend a wild night trying to find a replacement Christmas tree.
PLOT:
Harold (JOHN CHO) and Kumar (KAL PENN) were once best friends and roommates who couldn't pass up the chance to get high. But times have changed and the years have passed since they last saw each other. Harold, a Wall Street investment banker, has given up weed in hopes that doing so will help him get his wife, Maria (PAULA GARCES), pregnant. Kumar, on the other hand, still get high, hangs out with his friend Adrian (AMIR BLUMENFELD) who's looking to deflower a young woman he met on the Internet, and is shocked to hear that his ex-girlfriend, Vanessa (DANEEL ACKLES), is pregnant by him.

The two former friends are reunited when a wrapped gift for Harold is dropped off at Kumar's apartment. That turns out to be a huge joint that Kumar immediately lights up in Harold's home, prompting the latter to toss it out the window. But a gust of wind blows it back in and it lands on the prized Christmas tree that Maria's father, Carlos Perez (DANNY TREJO), has been growing for eight years. It goes up in flames and is ruined, prompting Harold to say good-bye to Kumar.

With Maria and her family out on the town for the evening, Harold asks his friend Todd (TOM LENNON) to help him find a replacement (with that man bringing along his young daughter for the ride), unaware that Kumar and Adrian are doing the same. That results in a wild night of things going out of control, including the guys having a run-in with a feared Ukrainian gangster (ELIAS KOTEAS); druggie and horn-dog Neil Patrick Harris (NEIL PATRICK HARRIS); a waffle-making robot; and even Santa himself.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of either of the first two "Harold & Kumar" films or stoner comedies in general, they probably will.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For strong crude and sexual content, graphic nudity, pervasive language, drug use and some violence.
