PLOT:
Adam (JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT) is a 27-year-old radio network employee who discovers that he a potentially deadly form of cancer. He has to break the news to his crude best friend, Kyle (SETH ROGEN); his artist-girlfriend, Rachael (BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD); his overbearing mother Diane (ANJELICA HUSTON); and Alzheimer's-stricken father, Richard (SERGE HOUDE).

Diane wants to move in with Adam, but he refuses. Rachael tries to care for him, but she has no experience with sickness and ends up cheating on him. Meanwhile, Kyle wants to use Adam's condition to elicit sympathy from random women so he and Adam can sleep with them.

Adam forms friendships with two kindred spirits in chemotherapy, an elderly man named Alan (PHILIP BAKER HALL) and a younger married man named Mitch (MATT FREWER). They share their wisdom, experience, and medicinal marijuana with him. At the same time, Adam shares a growing attraction with a young, student-therapist named Katie (ANNA KENDRICK) who has been assigned to his case. He eventually comes to rely on all these people when he agrees to a last-ditch surgery.
