QUICK TAKE:
Drama/Horror: A teen girl is torn between her love for a vampire and a rival werewolf even as her life is in grave danger.
PLOT:
The saga of human Bella (KRISTEN STEWART), vampire Edward (ROBERT PATTINSON), and werewolf Jacob (TAYLOR LAUTNER) and their love triangle continues. Little does Bella's father Charlie (BILLY BURKE) know, but Bella has made the decision to let Edward turn her into a vampire once she graduates from high school. Jacob, though, still has hope that she'll see that a life with him means she won't have to give up her humanity, her family, or her life.

Meanwhile, the female vampire Victoria (BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD) is still out there plotting her revenge against Edward, who killed her lover. Her plan is to use a fellow vampire, Riley (XAVIER SAMUEL), who is from the same small town where Edward and Bella live, to assemble an army of vampire "newborns" (those recently bitten when the bloodlust is especially insatiable) to slaughter the Cullen family and kill Bella.

The Cullens, who include patriarch Carlisle (PETER FACINELLI) and clairvoyant Alice (ASHLEY GREENE), form an uneasy truce with the local werewolf tribe to protect the town and keep Bella safe. A massive battle royale seems imminent, and it is unclear if the governing vampire body, the Volturi -- under the leadership of Jane (DAKOTA FANNING) -- will pick sides or sit this one out.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Most likely. "The Twilight Saga" has a massive following among teens and pre-teens. So if your kids have read the books, seen the first two movies, or absorbed all things Edward and Bella, read on…
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For intense sequences of action and violence, and some sensuality.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • KRISTEN STEWART plays a human teenager who is in love with both a vampire and a werewolf. She is a sullen, young girl who often feels different from those around her. She is cynical about most things, but is a romantic at heart and both yearns and fears the day she will give herself fully to Edward the vampire and cease being human. At one point, she aggressively tries to seduce him into losing her virginity with him.
  • ROBERT PATTINSON plays the vampire in love with Bella. He appears to be a teenager, but is in fact well over a century old. Because he comes from a different time, his belief system is such that he will not have sex with Bella unless they are married. He is also concerned that as a human, he would hurt her during intercourse. He can be violent when provoked and is very jealous of Bella's love for Jacob.
  • TAYLOR LAUTNER plays the werewolf in love with Bella. He is also a jealous type and has an active disdain for Edward. In wolf form, he can also be quite violent and is a skilled killer when a battle develops between the Cullen-werewolf alliance and an army of newborn vampires.
  • ASHLEY GREENE plays Edward's bubbly vampire sister, who can see into the future.
  • BILLY BURKE plays Bella's perpetually concerned, divorced dad, who worries that his daughter is becoming too fixated on Edward.
  • BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD plays a rogue female vampire who is obsessed with killing Bella out of revenge for Edward killing her lover.
  • XAVIER SAMUEL plays a young vampire who has been seduced by Victoria into assembling an army of newborn vampires to attack the Cullens and kill Bella.
  • XAVIER SAMUEL plays the patriarch of the vampire family. He is a doctor by trade and often uses his medical knowledge to help heal various characters.
  • DAKOTA FANNING plays one of the leaders of the Volturi, a coven of vampires who enforce the laws of the vampire world. She travels in a pack of four, observing Riley's growing army and the Cullens' reaction to it.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this drama/horror that has been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of a few minor expletives, while some colorful phrases are also uttered. Some sexually related dialogue is also present, as is kissing, a teen wishing to lose her virginity to her boyfriend, other sensuality, and multiple scenes showing very muscular young men with their shirts off.

Violence consists of people being bitten, attacked, manhandled, tossed considerable distances, decapitated, and eventually torn apart. Some of that has only slightly bloody results in order to avoid an R rating. Mostly, the very violent stuff is obscured by shadows, quick cutaways, clever camera angles, characters moving in extremely fast motion, or characters placed in front of the more graphic sights. Those scenes and moments of potential peril (many involving vampires and people who have shape-shifted into werewolves) will likely be unsettling and/or suspenseful for various viewers.

Bad attitudes are present, as is some potentially imitative behavior and various thematic elements. Drinking is also present, but no smoking, while tense family material also occurs.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, all sorts of camera movement occurs throughout the film particularly in regards to the extremely fast movements of the vampires and werewolves.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Charlie drinks from a can while talking to Bella. The can could be a beer or one of those power drinks. It was hard to tell from the label. Charlie appears sober in the scene.
  • In a flashback sequence, Rosalie's fiancé, Royce, and several male friends are shown inebriated and drinking from what appear to be bottles of whiskey.
  • Later in this extended sequence, Royce swigs from another bottle of whiskey while cowering in a room.
  • Carlisle tells those assembled that he has given an injured Jacob morphine to ease his pain, then adds that he will return soon to set up a "morphine drip."
  • Among vampires, blood is referred to in "drug" and "addictive" terms throughout.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • Riley is slashed or possibly bitten on the hand by a lightning-quick vampire, drawing blood.
  • Emmett is bloodied during a chase sequence through the forest involving Victoria.
  • In a flashback, a Native American woman stabs herself in the abdomen to distract an attacking vampire. Blood is soaking through from underneath her garment.
  • During the various attack sequences at the Seattle docks, some vampires occasionally lift their heads up from their kills to reveal bloody mouths.
  • Bella puts droplets of blood on various trees and other greenery around the forest to lure Riley and his army of newborns into a fight with the Cullens and the werewolves.
  • An intense battle royale eventually develops between the alliance of the Cullen vampire family and the local werewolves and Riley and his army of newborn vampires. The two warring vampire sides slam into each other in an open field a la "Braveheart." The Cullens kill multiple newborns by ripping their heads off. The effect is less bloody and more like a statue being decapitated on account of their quasi-crystal makeup.
  • To distract Victoria and Riley, Bella cuts her own arm, drawing a stream of blood.
  • Jacob is shown bruised and wounded in bed with considerable bandages over most of his torso.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • It is inferred, and Edward does not deny it, that he messed with Bella's truck so that it would not start and she would not be able to drive over to visit Jacob.
  • Jacob consciously does not return any of Kristen's phone calls.
  • Jacob, bitter that Bella is picking Edward over him, tells her: "Better you be dead than one of them." But he quickly apologizes when he sees how hurt she is by this statement.
  • Edward and Bella share a long kiss in front of Jacob.
  • Riley breaks into Charlie and Bella's house while Charlie is sleeping to steal an article of Bella's clothes for his new vampire army to use as a scent.
  • In a flashback, Royce stares at a woman's backside while walking with his fiancée, Rosalie.
  • Rosalie recalls being gang-raped by Royce and his drunken friends decades earlier before turned into a vampire.
  • Jacob kisses Bella hard on the mouth without her consent.
  • After Bella makes Edward promise not to reveal to Jacob that they are engaged, he gets Bella to talk about the engagement knowing that Jacob is within earshot.
  • Vampires in the film routinely put down werewolves for their odor.
  • Despite their temporary alliance in the film, the vampires and werewolves remain bitter, centuries-old enemies who will fight to the death if things like territory is invaded.
  • Victoria is obsessed with avenging the death of a former lover, who Edward killed.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence," "Blood/Gore" and "Jump Scenes" may be unsettling, suspenseful or scary to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material.
  • In a pre-title sequence, Riley is stalked in a rainy alley and eventually near a Seattle city dock by an unseen, but very fast vampire. The vampire runs by him, lightning quick, shoving him hard, throwing him against a wall, and eventually slashing him on his hand (or possibly biting him) and drawing blood. At the sight of his hand wound, he falls to the ground screaming.
  • During a chase sequence through the woods, Victoria is pursued by several werewolves at high speed who snarl at her and snap at her with their sharp teeth.
  • In a flashback sequence, two werewolves attack a vampire. The vampire kills one of them in a violent scuffle, resulting in multiple wolves "wolf-packing" the vampire.
  • A related flashback has a female vampire attacking a village of Native American werewolves, frightening many of the tribe's women and children.
  • Vampires, known as newborns because they were recently bitten, are shown attacking people on a city dock at night. Many of the attacks are in shadow. Multiple victims are shown lying on their backs as two or more vampires feed on them, usually with bloodless results because the attackers' backs are to the camera obscuring what is happening to the pinned humans.
  • A second nighttime attack scene is shown mostly from the vantage point of Jane and three other Volturi, who watch Riley and his growing army of newborns feeding on helpless humans. The sequence is much like the previous one, with many horrible things happening to people in shadow or obscured by multiple vampires feeding on a victim with their backs to the camera so you don't see the gore.
  • In a flashback sequence, it is inferred that Rosalie was brutally gang-raped and found bloodied by a vampire who cares for her and transforms her. We only see her grabbed and begin to be manhandled by a circle of drunken men.
  • An army of vampires emerges from underwater and head off into the forest to prepare for a battle royale with the Cullens.
  • Victoria and Riley get the upper hand during a fight with Edward. Just when it looks like they are going to tear him apart, Bella cuts herself as a distraction and the vampires are suddenly drawn to her.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • We hear the sounds of gunshots outside a door as Rosalie attacks three men guarding Royce.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "Damn," "Bad ass," "It was just me being an ass," "I put you through hell," "Better you be dead than one of them," "Your stench is revolting," "Let's face it, I'm hotter than you" and "Shut up."
  • The action, fighting, and other stunts might be enticing for some kids to try to imitate.
  • When seen in human form, Jacob and his family, "The Pack," are usually shirtless.
  • It is inferred, and Edward does not deny it, that he messed with Bella's truck so that it would not start and she would not be able to drive over to visit Jacob.
  • Jacob and his werewolf brethren have arm tattoos when in human form.
  • Jacob drives his motorcycle at a fairly high rate of speed with Bella on his back.
  • Jacob throws a tool in frustration when Bella tells him of her love for Edward.
  • Riley breaks into Charlie and Bella's house to steal an article of Bella's clothing.
  • Bella becomes engaged to Edward at the age of 17.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • Riley is stalked by an unseen vampire in a dark, rainy alley. The vampire makes several lightning-quick lunge attacks accompanied by loud sound effects.
  • Victoria runs from werewolves through a forest, with the wolves nipping perilously close to her backside.
  • Bella has a quick, intense nightmare of Victoria ordering Jasper to kill her. She is startled awake when Jasper charges at her with his vampire speed in the blink of an eye.
  • We hear Jacob's screams from outside a door as Carlisle sets his broken bones.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • A heavy amount of tense music occurs in the film, particularly during the various vampire and werewolf stalking and attack scenes.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • None.
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 2 asses, 1 damn, 1 hell and 1 use of "Oh my God."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • Edward and Bella kiss passionately in a field and cuddle closely.
  • Bella makes a brief joke about being "knocked up."
  • Jacob is shirtless during at least six major sequences in the film, most notably two in which he carries Bella through a forest to mask her scent from vampires who may want to kill her.
  • Almost every time we see Jacob's family, "The Pack," in their human form, the young men are shirtless.
  • Edward and Bella share a long kiss in front of Jacob.
  • Edward and Bella kiss tenderly and hold each other while clothed on a bed.
  • Jacob kisses Bella hard on the mouth without her consent.
  • In a flashback, Royce stares at a woman's backside while walking with his fiancée, Rosalie.
  • Rosalie infers to Bella that she was gang-raped by her fiancé and his drunken friends decades earlier before turned into a vampire.
  • An uncomfortable Charlie tries to have a father-daughter "sex talk" with Bella, fumbling with his words as he mentions "precautions." Bella tells him that her mom already had "the talk" with her 10 years earlier and then tells him she is still a virgin.
  • Bella and Edward lie on a bed and kiss passionately. Bella aggressively tries to convince Edward to have sex with her. Edward first reminds her that he can't because she would be too fragile in her human form. He then also explains that, according to the time in which he grew up, sex was something reserved for a husband and wife and that is how he wants them to experience their first time together.
  • In a flashback sequence, Jasper recalls being seduced by three comely female vampires and falling in love with one, Maria. The sequence shows the two of them sharing multiple passionate embraces and her whispering suggestively into his ear to feed on additional humans for her and create an army of newborns for her own evil purposes.
  • Victoria and Riley kiss passionately and embrace.
  • Jacob and Bella share a long, passionate kiss on a mountaintop.
  • Edward allows a shirtless Jacob to get into Bella's sleeping bag with her and use his "werewolf heat" to warm the freezing young woman. Jacob jokes that she would warm up faster if they were both naked.
  • Edward and Bella cuddle and kiss tenderly in the same field where the film opened.
  • SMOKING
  • None.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • Charlie grounds Bella for being too fixated on Edward and tells her she can avoid punishment by seeing other people, "like Jacob."
  • Bella briefly reunites with her mother in Florida, knowing that this could be the last time she sees her if she agrees to let Edward turn her into a vampire after her high-school graduation.
  • An uncomfortable Charlie tries to have a father-daughter "sex talk" with Bella, fumbling with his words as he mentions "precautions." Bella tells him that her mom already had "the talk" with her 10 years earlier and then tells him she is still a virgin.
  • Riley's mother and father show up in Charlie's office, hoping he can help with their missing son.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Vampire and werewolf legends as depicted in popular literature, films, and TV.
  • The fine line between love and obsession.
  • Teenage angst.
  • Revenge.
  • Rape.
  • Feeling different and even alienated from those around you.
  • Abstinence before marriage.
  • VIOLENCE
  • A lightning-quick vampire brutalizes Riley in a rainy alley, nudging him hard, throwing him a great distance against a wall, and eventually slashing (or possibly biting him) on the hand.
  • Members of the Cullen family chase Victoria through the forest at super speeds, often tussling briefly, then resuming the intense chase. The forest is bisected by a river. Once Victoria jumps to the other side, she is in werewolf territory and the wolves chase her at high speed. Eventually, she evades them and a wolf and Emmett briefly scuffle in the water of the river, but nothing comes of it.
  • Jacob throws a tool in frustration when Bella tells him of her love for Edward.
  • Bella punches Jacob hard in the face after he kisses her, causing her to sprain her wrist and hand.
  • In a flashback sequence, it is inferred that Rosalie was brutally gang-raped and found bloodied by a vampire who cares for her and transforms her. We only see her grabbed and begin to be manhandled by a circle of drunken men. The rest is told in voiceover narration or with Rosalie talking to Bella in the present day. She tells Bella of using her vampire powers to kill each of the men who assaulted her. We eventually see the last man, her fiancé, cowering behind closed doors and waiting to be attacked. He listens and watches shadows underneath the room's door as the three guards outside his room are attacked and killed. Rosalie then enters and it is inferred that she then goes to kill him.
  • In a flashback sequence, two werewolves attack a vampire. The vampire kills one of them in a violent scuffle, resulting in multiple wolves "wolf-packing" the vampire.
  • A related flashback has a female vampire attacking a village of Native American werewolves. The vampire kills several by throwing them down and breaking bones and snapping necks, with largely bloodless results. The vampire has one werewolf in a death grip about to pull its jaws apart when a female Native American in human form stabs herself in the abdomen. The vampire sees the blood and is drawn to, giving the wolf enough time to recover, pounce, tackle the vampire to the ground, and make the kill.
  • Vampires, known as newborns because they were recently bitten, are shown attacking people on a city dock at night. Many of the attacks are in shadow. Multiple victims are shown lying on their backs as two or more vampires feed on them, usually with bloodless results because the attackers' backs are to the camera. One man does have his head split open from behind in a brief flash of violence. A random runaway girl named Bree is shown crying, having just been bitten and wondering what is happening to her as she transforms.
  • A second nighttime attack scene is shown mostly from the vantage point of Jane and three other Volturi, who watch Riley and his growing army of newborns feeding on helpless humans. The sequence is must like the previous one, with many horrible things happening to people in shadow or obscured by multiple vampires feeding on a victim with their backs to the camera so you don't see the gore.
  • Riley brings a human victim to Victoria, who promptly bites him hard on the neck.
  • The Cullen family pair up in twos and demonstrate for their new allies, the werewolves, how best to kill "newborn" vampires. What follows are a series of super-fast takedowns and tackles, with each prevailing family member -- Emmett and Jasper tussle, then Edward and Carlyle, and so forth -- stopping short of delivering the kill.
  • In a flashback sequence, Jasper is shown snapping the neck of a vampire boy from behind. The camera focuses mostly on Jasper's regretful face until we hear the "snap" sound.
The werewolves attack early in the battle gripping various vampires in their jaws, biting them, manhandling them, and snapping their necks. A lot of the violence is done employing quick cuts and blurry, sped-up motion effects so it's difficult at times to tell the exact injuries being inflicted.
  • As the battle rages, Victoria and Riley find the camping spot where Edward and Bella are hiding. A werewolf and Riley fight, with Riley eventually kicking the wolf twice and throwing him off in the distance. Edward and Victoria, meanwhile, fight and wrestle, thrashing about on the ground violently. Edward throws her and she lands in a tree. He then pushes that tree down with his vampire strength. Eventually, Riley and Victoria team up to try and kill Edward, getting him in a strangle hold. This prompts Bella to slash her own and draw blood. The two vampires are drawn to her blood, providing Edward and the werewolf with enough of a distraction to kill both enemies. Edward breaks Victoria's neck and separates her head from her body. The wolf snaps Riley's neck and carries him off into the woods.
  • A rogue vampire sneaks up behind Jacob in wolf form and breaks several of his ribs with his bare hands, critically injuring him. Several wolves then jump on top of the vampire and kill him off-screen.
  • Jane uses her extraordinary mental abilities to inflict pain on Bree, then orders her murder. Her assistant, Felix, moves threateningly toward the girl and the Cullens are helpless to prevent the kill (which happens off-screen).
