QUICK TAKE:
Suspense/Thriller: An aging assassin is compelled to accept one final job before retiring.
PLOT:
Jack (GEORGE CLOONEY) has spent too many years as a contract assassin, either killing people himself or making guns for other assassins to shoot people. He wants out of the life and craves seclusion. When someone orders a hit on him, Jack takes the opportunity to meet with his enigmatic boss, Pavel (JOHAN LEYSEN), in Rome. There, Pavel arranges for Jack to hide out in a small, secluded Italian town.

When Jack gets to the town, though, he doesn't like the looks of it. So, he decides to pick his own hiding spot in nearby Castel del Monte. There, he meets two people. The first is Father Benedetto (PAOLO BONACELLI), an inquisitive priest who wants only to discuss sin and redemption. The second is a good-hearted prostitute named Clara (VIOLANTE PLACIDO) who wants to start a new life with him.

Pavel, though, has one more job for him. Jack is to construct a special rifle for a female assassin named Mathilde (THEKLA REUTEN). Jack tells him that this will be his final job, as he has become paranoid of everyone around him. His suspicions eventually prove true when two of the characters turn against him, leading to a climactic game of cat and mouse.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Older teens may be attracted by the film's sex and violence elements.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For violence, sexual content, and nudity.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • GEORGE CLOONEY plays a contract assassin who wants to retire and live a secluded life. He is a violent man who kills frequently for money or survival, including a woman who he has been sleeping with who may or may not have set him up. He is a frequent drinker, occasional smoker, and is not above hiring a prostitute for sex and companionship.
  • THEKLA REUTEN plays a younger assassin who hires Jack to build a special rifle for her to use on her next assignment. She appears to have no problem killing for money.
  • JOHAN LEYSEN plays Jack's enigmatic boss, who assigns the various contract killings and advises Jack to have no meaningful personal connections. He is shown on at least one occasion to be a drinker, but not to excess.
  • VIOLANTE PLACIDO plays a prostitute who may or may not be out to set Jack up. She has sex for money with multiple customers. If she is to be believed, she is slowly falling in love with Jack and wants to run away with him and start a new life. She carries a hidden gun in her person either for protection or because she is more than she appears to be. She is also an occasional smoker.
  • PAOLO BONACELLI plays an inquisitive priest who befriends Jack. We don't know if he is just behaving like a typical holy man when talking endlessly about sin and redemption or has a hidden agenda. He is a casual drinker, enjoying brandy and wine in particular.
  • IRINA BJORKLUND plays one of Jack's lovers who meets a tragic fate when she and he are targeted by assassins.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this suspense thriller that has been rated R. Profanity consists of at least 2 "f" words. A bit of sexually related dialogue is present along with much nudity (mostly female) and at least one fairly explicit sex scene.

Violence consists of people being shot, with some fairly bloody results. A chase involving the main character on a motorcycle and an assassin in a car ends with one character killing the other with his bare hands. There are numerous "cat-and-mouse" sequences in which the main character is either stalked by an assailant or thinks he is being stalked. Such scenes and moments of potential peril will likely be unsettling and/or suspenseful for various viewers.

Bad attitudes are present, as is some potentially imitative behavior and various thematic elements. Drinking is present, as is one scene of smoking.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.
