PLOT: Long ago, a woman known as Mother Gothel (voice of DONNA MURPHY) came upon a flower with magical powers including the ability to heal and keep one forever young in appearance. Thus, she wasn't happy when the local king sent out his people to find the flower to heal his ailing, pregnant wife, the queen. She survived, their baby was born, and in a fit of jealousy, Mother Gothel broken into the palace and kidnapped the infant to raise her as her own. Now, nearly 18 years later, Rapunzel (voice of MANDY MOORE) is a striking beauty, with unbelievably long hair that, accompanied by her singing, keeps Mother Gothel young. Of course, no one else has ever seen Rapunzel as Mother Gothel keeps her locked away in a remote and tall tower, constantly reminding her of how dangerous it is out in the real world. With the tower door sealed shut, the only way in and out for Mother Gothel is via Rapunzel lowering or hoisting her up with her hair, meaning the young woman's only friend is her chameleon, Pascal. Little does she know she's about to get a new visitor in the form of Flynn Ryder (voice of ZACHARY LEVI). He's a dashing young man who's recently stolen a valuable crown from the palace with the aid of the thuggish Stabbington Brothers (voices of RON PERLMAN), and is now on the run not only from them and a headstrong guard horse, Maximus, but also the armed palace guards. Spotting Rapunzel's tower, he climbs his way to what he thinks is safety, only to be knocked out by her, all while Mother Gothel is away. Having hidden his stolen crown, she only agrees to give it back if he takes her to the palace to see the annual lighting and ascension of the lanterns. Unbeknownst to her, it's something the still heartbroken King and Queen do each year on her birthday, hoping it will signal her to come back. Now teamed with Maximus, Flynn and Rapunzel set off to hold up their respective ends of the deal, but they must contend with the palace guards, the Stabbington Brothers and now Mother Gothel coming after them. WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT? The animation will likely draw in younger kids, while the musical elements might draw in some teens. WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG For brief mild violence. CAST AS ROLE MODELS: RAPUNZEL is a nearly 18-year-old, self-assured and attractive teen who's lived her entire life high up in a tower, unable to leave due to Mother Gothel's actions and manipulation, and is unaware that she was kidnapped from the palace as an infant. She longs to see the world and specifically the annual lantern lighting and ascension, and thus blackmails Flynn into taking her to that. Scared at times out in the real world, her confidence is also shaken as she has doubts about whether she's done the right thing (leaving the tower), but she eventually comes back around and stands up to her abductor mother-figure. FLYNN RYDER is the handsome and charming rogue/thief who ends up meeting Rapunzel after ascending and hiding from palace guards up in her tower. Wanting back his stolen royal crown (that she's hidden), he reluctantly agrees to her deal of him showing her the outside world in exchange for the crown. He eventually takes a liking to her, but must contend with the palace guards, the Stabbington Brothers and Mother Gothel who don't want him to succeed. MOTHER GOTHEL is egocentric old woman who looks young thanks to having kidnapped Rapunzel (and her magic, youth-inducing hair) years ago and raising her as her own. For fearing of losing that youth and wanting to keep her magic powers to herself, she refuses to allow Rapunzel to leave the tower (and that includes yelling at her that she'll never leave). When the teen manages to get out, Mother Gothel isn't pleased and does what she can to manipulate her back into the tower for good. THE STABBINGTON BROTHERS are thuggish thieves who aren't happy that Flynn has taken their stolen crown and thus want that back and to make Flynn physically pay for double-crossing them. MAXIMUS is the non-speaking palace guard horse who ends up rider-less due to Flynn and thus sets out to get his revenge on and capture the thief. The two are forced to get along by Rapunzel, but that doesn't prevent him from whacking Flynn when he gets the chance. OUR WORD TO PARENTS: The following is a brief summary of the content found in this animated musical/comedy that's rated PG. No profanity is present, but some colorful phrases are. There's brief kissing, and some views of cleavage. Violence consists of a stabbing, attempts on others' lives, and the hitting of others (standard and slapstick style). Some of that has a little bit of bloody results, and those scenes and various moments of potential peril (and what initially appears to be the death of a major character) might be unsettling, suspenseful and/or scary to some younger viewers. There's brief alcohol related content and a minor character appears and acts intoxicated, but that's never confirmed either way. Bad attitudes are present as is potentially imitative behavior and tense family material. Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content. For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there's a spin-around camera shot looking down. ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE People hold mugs and we see what appear to be beer taps in a pub. A Cupid type character (first seen in a pub) somewhat appears and acts intoxicated, but that's never confirmed either way. BLOOD/GORE Flynn asks a man if that's blood in his mustache, but we don't see anything. One man sings about something oozing from his body, but we don't see anything. During a song, we briefly see one man sewing up a wound on another man's arm. Horse sweat drips down onto Flynn. We see a little bit of blood on Flynn's belly (in his partially open shirt) and then some that appears to be stained through his shirt after he's been stabbed. DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE We hear that Mother Gothel hid a magic flower from others in order to keep herself young. Mother Gothel clips young Rapunzel's hair and then abducts her from the palace, forever then lying to the girl that she's her mother. She then forbids Rapunzel from ever leaving the tower in which they live, and uses her magic hair to keep herself young (when used in conjunction with Rapunzel singing to her). The Stabbington brothers lower Flynn down through a roof opening so that he can steal a royal crown. Mother Gothel is conceited and only concerned about her looks (and even puts down Rapunzel, although she thinks it's in a funny way). Mother Gothel repeatedly refuses Rapunzel's desire to leave the tower, even on her birthday. Flynn takes off with the stolen crown rather than help the Stabbington brothers up to join him (thus double-crossing them). Mother Gothel yells at Rapunzel that she (Rapunzel) will never leave the tower. Flynn occasionally refers to Rapunzel as "blondie." Mother Gothel is again mean to Rapunzel. FRIGHTENING SCENES Scenes listed under "Violence" may be unsettling, suspenseful or scary to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material. Some kids might worry when they hear Flynn state (in voice-over narration) that this is the story of how he died (but then he adds not to worry). We hear about the pregnant queen being sick, followed by a wide search for a magic flower that could heal her (it's found and she's fine after that). Mother Gothel clips young Rapunzel's hair and then abducts her from the palace, forever then lying to the girl that she's her mother. As Mother Gothel does a song about how scary it is out in the real world, we see the silhouette of a scary-looking cartoon figure (most of the scene is dark). Flynn swings around on a rope and knocks one guard off his horse (Maximus). Flynn and Maximus alternate tackling each other, with Flynn's stolen crown ending up out on a tree branch hanging over a precipice. They race out to that, but the branch breaks and they fall a long way. We see Maximus land hard and slide, but he's okay (as is Flynn elsewhere). Mother Gothel yells at Rapunzel that she (Rapunzel) will never leave the tower. A bush starts to shake and Rapunzel is scared, but then out comes a little bunny. Some big thugs grab Flynn in a pub, followed by Rapunzel hitting one of them with her hair. One then approaches Rapunzel carrying a big battle ax, but he then breaks into song. Flynn and Rapunzel hide from guards in a pub. A dam or similar structure is broken and the massive floodwaters sweep away various guards and Maximus, while that also topples a large vertical rock structure that falls toward Rapunzel and Flynn as they run in front of it. It just misses them as they make it into a cave that then starts filling with water, eventually going over their heads. Using Rapunzel's glow-in-the-dark hair, they make their way through that, with Flynn punching through a wall of rocks (injuring his hand, we later learn -- but Rapunzel heals that with her magic hair). We hear that if Rapunzel's hair is cut, it loses its magic power (some kids might worry about that). Mother Gothel makes Rapunzel think that Flynn has abandoned her (after telling her he'd do just that) by having him tied unconscious to a boat heading away from her. Some kids might be worried when they hear that Flynn is to be hanged. Crossbow arrows are fired at Flynn who's riding away on Maximus. Maximus then races toward other guards and then jumps off the palace top down onto another roof. Flynn goes into the tower looking for Rapunzel, but Mother Gothel stabs him in the gut with a knife (we see the act, but not the actual insertion), doubling him over to the floor in pain. We then see that she has Rapunzel chained, and she kicks Pascal aside. Rapunzel then agrees to stay with Mother Gothel forever if she allows her to save Flynn. That's agreed to, but Flynn suddenly slices off most of Rapunzel's long hair. Pascal then trips Mother Gothel who falls from the tower, turning older by the second to the point that she's nothing but dust by the time she hits the ground down below. Some kids may worry that Flynn has died from Mother Gothel stabbing him in the gut, but a tear from her hits his skin and brings him back to life. GUNS/WEAPONS A guard carries a spear, followed by a view of others doing the same. One of the Stabbington brothers wears a sword. Guards fire crossbow arrows at Flynn as he flees from them through the woods (they land in a tree near him). Mother Gothel grabs a knife from a drawer. Some big thugs grab Flynn in a pub, followed by Rapunzel hitting one of them with her hair. One then approaches Rapunzel carrying a big battle ax, but he then breaks into song. During that, he throws the ax and it nearly (accidentally) hits another man. During a song, many blades are held on Flynn. Guards carry swords. Mother Gothel holds a knife on a Cupid type character to get him to talk. Flynn must spar with Maximus who's holding a sword in his mouth and knocks the frying pan from Flynn's hand. Flynn then swings down on Rapunzel's hair (that Maximus nearly bites) and barely avoids the Stabbington brothers and their drawn swords. From a distance, we see the Stabbington brothers pull their swords in the direction of Mother Gothel. Crossbow arrows are fired at Flynn who's riding away on Maximus. Flynn goes into the tower looking for Rapunzel, but Mother Gothel stabs him in the gut with a knife (we see the act, but not the actual insertion), doubling him over to the floor in pain. IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR Phrases: "Now help us up, pretty boy," "C'mon, fleabag," "Hi, how you doing?" (said in an exaggerated lothario way), "Alright, blondie," "Simpatico," "You broke my smolder," "I'm a despicable human being," "Your dream stinks," "Somebody get me a glass 'cuz I just found me a tall drink of water," "C'est la vie," "Don't freak out" and "Don't be a dummy." The action, stunts and other such behavior might be enticing for some kids to try to imitate. Mother Gothel rappels down from the tower using Rapunzel's hair (and conversely is hoisted up by the same). Flynn and the Stabbington brothers jump from roof to roof of the palace. The Stabbington brothers lower Flynn down through a roof opening so that he can steal a royal crown. Rapunzel repeatedly hits Flynn with a frying pan (to knock him out). Flynn tries gives Rapunzel an exaggerated, smoldering look. Miscellaneous men juggle and toss flaming torches back and forth, while one blows flames from his mouth. Maximus drags Flynn along the ground by his foot/boot. JUMP SCENES None. MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE) An extreme amount of suspenseful, ominous, heavily dramatic and action-oriented music occurs in the film. MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE) None. PROFANITY None. SEX/NUDITY Mother Gothel shows cleavage in various scenes in the film. While nothing explicit, the shape of Rapunzel's bust is fairly noticeable in her tight top. A Cupid type figure appears to be wearing only a diaper or related attire. Rapunzel kisses a large thug on the cheek in a pub. Flynn admits that's not really his name, but rather one he picked up from a story about a man who wasn't bad with the ladies either. Flynn and Rapunzel nearly kiss. Flynn and Rapunzel kiss, and then do so again. SMOKING None. TENSE FAMILY SCENES There's talk of the King and Queen hoping ever year on Rapunzel's birthday that she'll return, and they send various lit lanterns floating into the sky as a symbol of that. We see Rapunzel's real parents, the King and Queen, looking quite sad about their long-missing daughter. Thinking Mother Gothel is her real mother, Rapunzel is mad at and defiant toward her, especially when she learns the truth about how they came together. TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT This retelling of the Grimm Brothers' Rapunzel story. The quest for youth and what it will drive some people to do. Mother Gothel telling Rapunzel lies about the outside world in hopes of it scaring her into not wanting to go out into it. Flynn tells Rapunzel that part of growing up is a little rebellion. VIOLENCE Guards fire crossbow arrows at Flynn as he flees from them through the woods (they land in a tree near him). Flynn swings around on a rope and knocks one guard off his horse (Maximus). Flynn and Maximus alternate tackling each other, with Flynn's stolen crown ending up out on a tree branch hanging over a precipice. She finally succeeds and locks him inside, but then accidentally hits herself on the head with her frying pan while spinning it around in victory. Rapunzel opens her wardrobe door and Flynn falls to the floor hard on his face. Pascal then smacks him once, hits him repeatedly with his tail, and then sticks his tongue in Flynn's ear to rouse him. We hear the sound of Rapunzel hitting Flynn once again with her frying pan. Rapunzel drops Flynn to the floor in the chair in which he's tied. Some big thugs grab Flynn in a pub, followed by Rapunzel hitting one of them with her hair. One then approaches Rapunzel carrying a big battle ax, but he then breaks into song. During that, he throws the ax and it nearly (accidentally) hits another man. During more singing, one man accidentally hits another, knocking him silly. One Stabbington brother hits and knocks out a guard so that he can free himself and then his brother. Mother Gothel holds a knife on a Cupid type character to get him to talk. Flynn and Rapunzel are chased through a tunnel by guards and then emerge out onto a precipice. Rapunzel swings by her hair down to safety, followed by Flynn using her frying pan to knock out the various guards who come at him. He then must spar with Maximus who's holding a sword in his mouth and knocks the pan from Flynn's hand. Crossbow arrows are fired at Flynn who's riding away on Maximus. Maximus then races toward other guards and then jumps off the palace top down onto another roof. Flynn goes into the tower looking for Rapunzel, but Mother Gothel stabs him in the gut with a knife (we see the act, but not the actual insertion), doubling him over to the floor in pain.
