QUICK TAKE:
Drama: A young college student gets caught back up into the world of competitive dancing when he's befriended and recruited by a dance crew captain who needs his team to win a big competition in order to save the dance warehouse where they train and live.
PLOT:
Moose (ADAM G. SEVANI) and Camille (ALYSON STONER) have been best friends forever and have now arrived at NYU together as incoming freshmen. Moose has decided to give up dancing in favor of focusing on his engineering major, but an impromptu dance-off performance draws the attention of aspiring filmmaker Luke (RICK MALAMBRI).

Not only does he make movies about various dancers, but he's also one and the team leader of The Pirates. They're a ragtag group of performers -- including the likes of Jacob (KEITH STALLWORTH), Anala (KENDRA ANDREWS), Jason (STEPHEN BOSS) and the Santiago twins (MARTIN & FACUNDO LOMBARD) among others -- who train and live in the former warehouse his dancer parents bought long ago. But with the rent now months past due, the place is facing foreclosure, and thus he hopes that Moose and fellow new dancer Natalie (SHARNI VINSON) might help him and the Pirates win a big dance competition.

Considering the top prize is $100,000, that would be the cash infusion they need to keep the bank at bay, but they're not alone in that quest. Chief among their rivals are The Samurai, led by former Pirate Julien (JOE SLAUGHTER) whose quest seems to be fueled only by his desire to defeat his former best friend. As Luke must contend with that and falling for Natalie, Moose must deal with trying to balance dancing with his school work, all of which puts a strain on his friendship with Camille.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of either or both of the first two "Step Up" movies, anyone in the cast, or dance films in general, they might.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For brief strong language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • RICK MALAMBRI plays the leader of the dance group, a young man who's concerned about late rent on his parent's former warehouse that he now uses to house and train his squad. Accordingly, he welcomes Moose and Natalie into his team in hopes of winning a lucrative dance contest prize. He's also an aspiring filmmaker, falls for Natalie (and makes out with her), and briefly uses profanity.
  • ADAM G. SEVANI plays an incoming college freshman at NYU who's opted to give up dancing in favor of focusing on his engineering major. But when he gets wrapped up in Luke and the Pirates' world, he can't help himself from getting back involved in that. As he does -- including performing some wild dance moves and stunts -- and tries to balance that and his school work, he repeatedly lets Camille down in terms of spending time with her.
  • SHARNI VINSON plays another new dancer in Luke's fold, a proficient and confident performer who ends up romantically interested in him, meaning she's torn between that and a secret that's really driving her. She makes out with him.
  • ALYSON STONER plays Moose's best friend from school who heads with him to NYU but is unhappy that he puts his newly revived interest in dancing ahead of their friendship and spending time with her.
  • JOE SLAUGHTER plays Luke's main rival, a former Pirate who left (reportedly due to gambling problems) to form his own dance squad. He has nothing but disdain for Luke now and wants nothing more than to defeat him in the upcoming big competition.
  • KEITH STALLWORTH plays the number two guy in Luke's squad who's similarly concerned about the debut incurred by their dance warehouse.
  • MARTIN & FACUNDO LOMBARD play twins who are good at dancing and serve as the film's comedic relief.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this PG-13 rated drama. Profanity consists of at least 1 "f" word, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered, and some non-explicit but sexually related lyrics are heard. A dancer is seen in a sports bra several times, while there's some kissing, views of shirtless guys, and some male crotch grabbing during dance routines.

There's some brief scuffling, while all sorts of potentially imitative behavior is present, as are bad attitudes and tense family material. Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there are near strobe effects in a club early in the film, while there's also some flashing from camera flashes and then partial strobe effects during the last dance-off.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, some handheld camera footage is seen from time to time in the film (a bit bouncy).
