QUICK TAKE:
Sci-fi horror: After a virus infection has turned much of the Earth's population into zombies, a ragtag group of survivors struggle to stay alive.
PLOT:
The genetically altered Alice (MILLA JOVOVICH) returns to do battle with the evil Umbrella Corporation responsible for unleashing a virus on the Earth's population that caused a global pandemic and turned millions into zombies. After laying siege to the company's headquarters in Tokyo and doing battle with evil corporate head Albert Wesker (SHAWN ROBERTS), Alice reunites with an amnesiac Claire (ALI LARTER) in Alaska to resume the search for human survivors.

They find a ragtag group in Los Angeles. The survivors are holed up inside a local high-rise prison and dream of making it to a nearby anchored ship called Arcadia. They include Luther (BORIS KODJOE), a former sports superstar; Bennett (KIM COATES), a slimy Hollywood producer; Kim Yong (NORMAN YEUNG), his brown-nosing assistant; Angel (SERGIO PERIS-MENCHETA), a good-hearted mechanic; Crystal (KACEY BARNFIELD), a former actress wannabe; and Wendell (FULVIO CECERE), the resident complainer. Also in the mix is the jail's last remaining prisoner, an enigmatic soldier named Chris (WENTWORTH MILLER), who swears he can be trusted.

All concerned want desperately to get to Arcadia, an anchored ship in the L.A. harbor that has been broadcasting on various frequencies that it offers an uncontaminated environment with plenty of food, water, safety, and shelter.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Teens who play video games and have seen the previous "Resident Evil" movies on DVD or cable TV will definitely have a high interest.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For sequences of strong violence and language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • MILLA JOVOVICH plays a genetically altered human with super speed, strength, and telekinetic abilities. She is a natural leader who looks to get revenge against the corporation that unleashed a deadly virus on the Earth's population and caused a global pandemic. She is a violent woman, gifted at survival, who still craves human contact.
  • ALI LARTER plays a human survivor and former fighter alongside Alice. She has amnesia throughout much of the film, resulting from a device the company placed on her during a failed abduction attempt. She is good at killing and swears often.
  • WENTWORTH MILLER plays a jailed military officer who the other survivors suspect may be a killer. He has an arrogant way about him, and it is unclear until late in the film whether Alice and the others can really trust him.
  • SHAWN ROBERTS plays the completely evil head of the Umbrella Corporation, who has no problem sacrificing however many employees or random human beings he comes in contact with if it means his survival or the survival of the company. He also craves the blood of Alice, who he believes is the only human to carry the virus and not succumb to zombie-like tendencies.
  • BORIS KODJOE plays a former sports superstar who has become the de facto leader of a group of L.A. survivors who have taken refuge in the city's prison. He swears often, but is essentially a decent guy who has a mild flirtation with Alice.
  • KIM COATES plays a former Hollywood producer who thinks only of himself. He eventually betrays the other survivors, killing one of them, and makes a deal with Wesker to help him further the company's evil agenda. He is a liar, a murderer, and frequently swears.
  • NORMAN YEUNG plays the producer's obedient assistant, who remains in a subordinate position to Bennett even though civilization and the movie biz are long gone.
  • SERGIO PERIS-MENCHETA plays a good-hearted mechanic.
  • KACEY BARNFIELD plays a good-hearted woman who came to Hollywood to be an actress just prior to the apocalypse.
  • FULVIO CECERE plays a human survivor who likes to read pornography and tries to spy on Alice when she goes to take a shower.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this sci-fi horror movie that has been rated R. Profanity consists of at least 7 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Some brief sexual material is present, most notably a man looking at a pornographic magazine (bare breasts), while cleavage is present many times in the film.

Violence consists of people -- mostly zombies -- being shot, stabbed, skewered, decapitated, exploded, punched, kicked, and generally manhandled. All of this has very bloody results. There is also a sequence where the lead characters are attacked by mutated dogs that may prove unsettling to some animal lovers. In addition, a large section of a major city is blown up by a nuclear-like device.

Bad attitudes are present throughout, as is much potentially imitative behavior and various thematic elements. There is no smoking or drinking, however.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, read our more detailed review below

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, the film is presented in 3-D and the director makes ample use of the gimmick. There are also several sequences that go from slow-motion to hyper fast motion in the same scene to goose the action and hike up the gore factor.

  • Sentries in sniper perches attempt to zero in on a target, but are instead shot and killed.
  • An opening battle sequence finds Alice and at least a dozen of her clones infiltrating Umbrella Corp.'s headquarters. Multiple security personnel are mobilized and fire automatic weapons, killing some of the clones. Before it is revealed that Alice is using clones, one such copy is surrounded and shot repeatedly. Alice and her copies fight back with guns of their own. Alice kills multiple sentries with swords and throwing stars. Alice then causes an explosion that kills dozens of remaining sentries.
  • The battle continues with two of Alice's clones crashing through a large window and rappelling down a long shaft that is open to multiple floors of the company's headquarters. The two fire their guns as they freefall, hitting multiple Umbrella personnel on each level. The clone is shot and killed, but Alice lands safely and continues to fire away and kill many staffers. The 2nd clone is shot dead and in her hands are grenade-like devices that cause a massive explosion, killing more.
  • Once he safely away from the building in a helicopter, Wesker sets off a nuclear-like device that destroys the complex and much of the city. Alice, though, has stowed away on the aircraft. Wesker gets the drop on her and jabs a hypodermic needle in her neck to try and render her powerless. He then proceeds to punch, kick, and manhandle her to the point that he forgets to pilot the copter. The aircraft crashes, and it appears only Alice survives.
  • In Alaska, an amnesiac Claire attacks Alice with a knife. Alice avoids her multiple lunges and kicks her hard in the mid-section, propelling the woman backwards and hard into the hull of a parked plane, knocking her out.

One of the undead bites into Crystal and pulls her under the water, while Alice and Chris shoot and stab multiple other zombies. There are too many of the creatures, and the two humans are forced to retreat into the prison's armory.
  • Bennett shoots Angel in the head.
  • Bennett steals Alice's plane and flies off the building's roof. The plane instantly plunges toward the mass of zombies waiting below. Bennett is about to crash when he is able to pull up at the last minute, but not before mowing through a long line of zombies, cutting them up in the aircraft's propeller, and leaving a trail of blood that is visible from above.
  • Hundreds of zombies finally gain access to the prison's rooftop and Alice, Luther, and the others are forced to fight back. They use their guns to shoot multiple zombies, with the action slowed down often to super slo-mo showing bullets tearing through zombie heads and exploding them. Alice manages to maneuver Luther and the others into a powerless elevator which she blows with explosives, sending the elevator careening down multiple stories until it lands in one of the flooded levels. She then uses explosives to blow the roof, but not before grabbing some cable and jumping off the roof (with dozens of zombies mindlessly following her). Dozens of zombies are burned and blasted to bids in the explosion.
  • Alice lands on the next exterior level down. She then proceeds to slice up and shoot many more zombies, with slo-mo blood spurts shown in close-up 3D. By this time, Luther and the others have made their way to where she is and they shoot and kill multiple zombies as Alice runs through the throngs of the undead who reach out (again in slo-mo) and just miss seizing her each time.
  • Alice, Claire, and Kim Yong are attacked by The Axeman wielding his massive ax-like weapon on a chain. Kim Yong is killed, Alice is tossed hard against a wall, but Claire holds her own. She shoots The Axeman several times, but he appears unaffected. After evading several more lunges with the Axeman's weapon, Claire retrieves her gun, slides underneath him, and shoots him square in his chest. The shot sends him to the ground and he appears to be dead. But he rises a short time later to attack Claire, who has emptied her weapon into the massive Axeman. Alice then shows up and blows The Axeman's head clean off, with the head exploding into a thick mist of blood and brain matter.
  • We see a brief flashback of Claire and the survivors of the previous film being attacked on a beach by Umbrella Corp. personnel. Claire fights back hard and manages to escape, but not before a device is attached to her chest that scrambles her brain and causes temporary amnesia.
  • Alice shoots one of Wesker's zombie dogs and then kicks a shard of glass at a second dog, splitting the mutated animal in two.
  • Wesker dodges Chris and Claire's gunshots, then punches, kicks, and manhandles them both, sending them into cryogenic tubes as Alice fights the dogs and Bennett.
  • Alice kicks Bennett multiple times. Bennett later stabs Alice with a shank-like knife.
  • SPOILER ALERT: Alice stabs Wesker in the head with one of her swords, then shoots him as his head starts to morph. She then releases Claire and Chris from their cryogenic chambers, and they shoot Wesker multiple times at point-blank range until they are reasonably sure he is dead. But his body contains the virus and he makes a last-ditch effort to escape the Arcadia in one of his super-powered helicopters. He activates a remote control, thinking it will blow up the ship. But Alice has thought ahead and placed the explosive device on Wesker's copter. The aircraft blows up.
