QUICK TAKE:
Drama: A rebellious young man romances the emotionally fragile daughter of the cop who humiliated him, only to fall in love with her.
PLOT:
Tyler Hawkins (ROBERT PATTINSON) is a rebellious college student still grieving the loss of his older brother, who committed suicide years earlier. The young man quarrels with his wealthy, Type A father, Charles (PIERCE BROSNAN); is fiercely protective of his mother, Diane (LENA OLIN) and shy, little sister Caroline (RUBY JERINS); and becomes smitten with Ally (EMILIE DE RAVIN), a classmate who also is still smarting from a tragedy that happened years earlier -- the murder of her mother right in front of her.

The problem is Tyler has begun the relationship under false pretenses. After a night of drinking, he gets into an alley fight and ends up getting beaten and jailed by Ally's cop father, Neil (CHRIS COOPER). Tyler's roommate Aidan (TATE ELLINGTON) hatches the brilliant idea that Tyler will romance Ally and then dump her to get back at Neil.

When Tyler indeed starts to have real feelings for the woman and realizes she has been through just as much as he has in his young life, the guilt starts to eat away at him. At the same time, tensions with his father continue to boil and troubles at school threaten to derail Caroline. Eventually, the boy has to grow to be a man and help heal the fractures all around him even as the city in which he lives blindly moves forward to a day that will change all of their lives.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?

CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • ROBERT PATTINSON plays a rebellious, young college student who at first romances a female classmate to get back at her cop father. But he comes to love her. He is still reeling from his brother's suicide years earlier, has issues with his father, is a chain smoker, frequent drinker, and is prone to fits of violent rage.
  • EMILIE DE RAVIN plays an emotionally fragile young woman who witnessed the murder of her mother at a young age. She has a sometimes tense relationship with her father. She is a casual drinker, but does succumb to one night of binge drinking that causes her to vomit and pass out.
  • TATE ELLINGTON plays Tyler's fun-loving roommate. Like many college students, he loves to party and often drinks to excess.
  • CHRIS COOPER plays Ally's cop father, who is still grieving the loss of his wife a decade earlier and remains fiercely protective of his daughter as a result. He is said to drink on the sly and has an often frightening flash temper that often leads him to commit violent acts.
  • PIERCE BROSNAN plays Tyler's mega-successful attorney father, who has thrown himself into his work in the years since his eldest son's suicide and the subsequent dissolution of his marriage. He and Tyler quarrel frequently and he remains distant from his daughter. He is a casual drinker.
  • RUBY JERINS plays Tyler's sister and Charles' youngest child. She is a sensitive, but highly intelligent pre-teen girl with a gift for drawing. She is teased mercilessly at school, though, and is sad that her father isn't more a part of her life.
  • LENA OLIN plays Tyler and Caroline's supportive mother, who has remarried in the years since her divorce from Charles.
