QUICK TAKE:
Action/Sci-Fi: A group of soldiers and killers must contend with being deposited on another planet where they're to serve as prey for technologically advanced predator hunters.
PLOT:
Former soldier turned mercenary Royce (ADRIEN BRODY) finds his world turned upside down when he wakes up to find himself plummeting toward the ground, with his parachute barely stopping his fall to a jungle floor. There, he encounters others in the identical predicament of not knowing where they are or how they've come to be in this place.

They include sniper Isabelle (ALICE BRAGA) and drug cartel enforcer Cuchillo (DANNY TREJO), along with Japanese mobster Hanzo (LOUIS OZAWA CHANGCHIEN), RUF death squad member Mombasa (MAHERSHALALHASHBAZ ALI), and Russian special ops soldier Nikolai (OLEG TAKAROV). Then there's convicted mass murderer Stans (WALTON GOGGINS) who was just days away from being executed, and the unlikeliest member of this unlikely group, Edwin (TOPHER GRACE), a slight and unassuming doctor.

It's not long before they realize they're on another planet in some sort of hunting preserve where they're the prey for technologically advanced, alien predator beings. Seeing that no one -- save for former Air Cavalry member Noland (LAURENCE FISHBURNE) who they later meet -- has survived this experience, the group realizes the odds are against them. Yet, with Royce taking command, mainly to save his own hide, they set out to avoid being killed by their hunters and perhaps turn the tables on them.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're into the "Predator" movie series, action-based sci-fi flicks and/or are fans of anyone in the cast, they might be interested.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For strong creature violence and gore, and pervasive language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • ADRIEN BRODY plays a former soldier turned mercenary who finds himself on another planet as prey for alien predator beings. While he fights alongside the others for survival, and acts as their unofficial leader, he'd prefer to be a loner and doesn't care about leaving anyone behind. He uses strong profanity.
  • ALICE BRAGA plays the lone woman in the group, a sniper who's proficient with her weapon and clashes often with Royce. She uses strong profanity.
  • TOPHER GRACE plays a doctor who doesn't seem to fit in, at least initially, with the rest of the group's status. He uses strong profanity.
  • WALTON GOGGINS plays a murderer just days away from being executed when he's dropped onto the planet with others. A low-life, he only cares about himself, uses strong profanity, and makes both a drug-related and sexually derogative/violent comment about women.
  • OLEG TAKAROV plays a Russian special forces op who also finds himself in a bad situation and tries to battle his way out of it.
  • DANNY TREJO plays a Mexican drug cartel enforcer and killer who likewise finds himself in over his head. He uses strong profanity.
  • LOUIS OZAWA CHANGCHIEN plays a Japanese mob enforcer of few words who's equipped with a large handgun and samurai sword to do battle with the predators.
  • MAHERSHALALHASHBAZ ALI plays an RUF death squad member from Sierra Leone who's in the same predicament.
  • LAURENCE FISHBURNE plays a former Air Cavalry member who's somehow managed to survive on the planet for the past decade, but his isolation and the constant predator threat has left him mentally unstable. He uses strong profanity.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this action-based sci-fi flick. Profanity consists of at least 38 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Some sexually related dialogue is present, as is a brief view of a tattoo of a bare-breasted woman on a man's skin.

Violence consists of humans and alien predator creatures attacking, fighting, wounding and/or killing each other via all sorts of weaponry (with varying degrees of bloody/gory results, some of which is to the extreme.). Other human on human contact occurs, and that, other action/stunts and some behavior might be enticing for kids to try to imitate, while various scenes and sights might be unsettling, suspenseful or scary for some viewers.

Bad attitudes are present, as is a drug related comment, while a person is affected by a neurotoxin. Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there's some of that in a dark area more than halfway through the film.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, varying amounts of camera movement (bouncy, fluid, point of view and a spin around shot) are present at various points in the film.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Trying to figure out how they got to their present location, Stans throws out the possibility that they were drugged (in their food) to see what would happen to them, but Edwin discredits that idea, saying there would be aftereffects.
  • Stans states that if he ever gets home, he's going to do a lot of cocaine.
  • A man slices a woman, getting a neurotoxin into her system. We then see her distorted point of view as that takes effect.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • Royce has a few bloody scrapes on his face after a hard landing on the ground, as well as some from his nose.
  • We see a man's dead hand and a quick view of his bloody body after he dies upon landing too hard on the ground after being dropped from the sky.
  • The group finds a previously hunted person, noted as being dead for around two weeks, with a large hole in his chest and discolored skin on his face.
  • A large, hairless wolf type creature with spikes on its front charges through the jungle toward the group. Many of them open fire on it, eventually hitting the beast that explodes in a bloody/gory mess. Isabelle then shoots another one that's chasing Edwin, while one lands on Stans who repeatedly stabs it in the neck (with bloody results on it and him) before Mombasa knocks it off and shoots it (with a bloody burst), and another such creature is shot. We then see one such creature and its severed head beside it.
  • We see a dead and bloody man who's just been shot.
  • The group finds the predators' hunting camp, completed with human skulls, a strung-up and skinned body and related gory/bloody remains.
  • An invisible predator impales a man twice (with bloody, lethal results).
  • Hanzo shows that he's missing two fingers from talking too much in the past.
  • Edwin vomits from smoke inhalation.
  • A predator blasts a man, obliterating him in a shower of blood and gore.
  • A man shoots a predator, with a little green blood from the latter.
  • A man is blasted by a predator, and we then see red target marks on Royce, but the first man then jumps on the predator and repeatedly stabs it, with bloody (green) results. The predator then throws him off, impales him, and rips out his spine and brain.
  • Two predators battle each other, with bashing, hitting and struggling. One is blasted and then decapitated, with very bloody (green) results.
  • Edwin has blood on his head following a predator encounter.
  • A man comes up behind Royce who then turns and quickly grabs him, stabbing him in the neck (with bloody results there and out of the man's mouth).
  • A predator throws, hits and kicks Royce, and prepares to kill him, but Isabelle manages to fire a shot from her sniper rifle that goes through the predator (with a bloody spurt). The predator then flings a blade into Isabelle's shoulder, but Royce then repeatedly bashes the predator, finally severing its arm (with bloody results) and then head (that slowly peels away from the neck, also with bloody/gory results).
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • We see Stans' point of view as he stares at Isabelle's clothed butt. When she turns around, he tells her, "Your ass is awesome."
  • The predators obviously have bad attitudes for bringing the humans to the planet to be hunted.
  • Royce is only looking out for himself and has no second thoughts about leaving the others for dead and/or sacrificing them to ensure his own survival.
  • We hear that Stans is a convicted murderer who was about to be executed before he was whisked away to this hunting planet.
  • We hear that Hanzo is in the Japanese mob.
  • We hear that Cuchillo is a drug cartel enforcer.
  • We hear that Mombasa is a death squad member who admits to killing others in the past.
  • Spoiler Alert: Edwin admits to being a murderer.
  • Stans states that if he ever gets home, he's going to rape some "bitches," with Edwin being shocked by that and half-jokingly stating it will be "bitch raping time."
  • About Noland's makeshift "home" that he's scraped together inside abandoned machinery, Stans says, "What a sh*t-hole."
  • A man slices a woman, getting a neurotoxin into her system. We then see her distorted point of view as that takes effect. He then comes up behind Royce to kill him, but is thwarted.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence," "Blood/Gore" and "Jump Scenes" may be unsettling, suspenseful or scary to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material.
  • The sight of the predators (crab-like faces with large mandibles, as well as one's skull-like helmet complete with sharp teeth, etc.) might be unsettling and/or scary to some viewers.
  • Royce wakes up to find himself plummeting through the sky toward the ground. He can't get his chute to open, but it finally does, although he crashes through trees and lands hard on the ground.
  • Hanzo slowly approaches a partially covered cage, gun drawn, and reaches out for the material covering it. He then yanks that away, only to reveal an empty cage (albeit with large insects crawling around parts of that).
  • Mombasa accidentally falls over a trip wire, sending huge logs swinging toward him and the others (they duck out of the way). Large spikes then fall and/or are shot into the ground and they must avoid those, while Hanzo barely avoids a spiked trap door that blasts open by him, and Isabelle falls into a pit and barely holds on above stakes sticking up below her. She starts to slip, with Royce rescuing her just in time.
  • We see a predator's infrared POV of Mombasa and Isabelle, looking down on them (as they can't see it due to it being cloaked).
One then charges Isabelle whose rifle is out of ammo. She then shoots her handgun at it and prepares to shoot herself in the head with her last shot, but a signal is then heard that calls off the beast. We then see one such creature and its severed head beside it.
  • The group figures out they're on a game preserve and are being hunted by something (and later realize those are alien predators).
  • The group hears cries for help, slowly make their way into an opening, and find one of their members on his knees, facing away from them. Isabelle wants to help, but Royce knows it's a trap and throws a rock between them and the man, setting off some sort of snapping blades. Realizing they can't help him, the group leaves, with Isabelle firing a mercy kill shot that downs the man. But Isabelle then hears the continued cries for help and realizes it wasn't that man.
  • The group finds the predators' hunting camp, completed with human skulls, a strung-up and skinned body and related gory/bloody remains.
  • Finding a predator strung up on an angled structure, Nikolai slowly approaches it and touches it with his gun barrel, causing the predator to move suddenly.
  • To lure out a being near them, Royce has Edwin run through the jungle. We then see a creature chasing behind him, with Isabelle waiting to get off a sniper shot. She does and the creature falls dead, but she then points out that her shot missed. Just then, a predator de-cloaks and holds his gun on Royce, but it turns out to be Noland in disguise.
  • The group takes refuge in Noland's hideout, but then awaken to find that he's trying to smoke them out via a small fire. They panic, with Royce firing a shot that blows a hole through the outside wall to allow fresh air inside. After Noland encounters a predator in a tunnel, the group hears and sees heavy pounding on a thick metal door leading into their area. That then stops, with Royce cautiously looking through the opening for signs of the predators.
  • Edwin becomes separated from the group in dark tunnels, panics, and lights various flares. He throws one and it outlines the shape of a cloaked predator that then approaches him.
