PLOT: Seismic activity opens an undersea cavern that unleashes thousands of prehistoric, flesh-eating piranhas. Their first victim is a local fisherman named Matt (RICHARD DREYFUSS). The fish then next turn their attention to the hundreds of spring-breakers who have descended on a nearby Arizona resort town protected by Sheriff Julie Forester (ELISABETH SHUE) and Deputy Fallon (VING RHAMES). Julie is the mother to teenager Jake (STEVEN R. McQUEEN), who is recruited by a "Girls Gone Wild" videographer Derrick (JERRY O'CONNELL) to guide him to where all of the local sites are where promiscuous girls party and swim. Jake is attracted to Derrick's main performers, Danni (KELLY BROOK) and Crystal (RILEY STEELE), but also loves local girl, Kelly (JESSICA SZOHR). Meanwhile, local fish expert Mr. Goodman (CHRISTOPHER LLOYD) determines the origins of this particular breed of piranha and fears for the local population. When the piranha attack, Jake, Kelly, Derrick and his crew are isolated and swarmed by the killer fish. Julie and Fallon try and help the hundreds of partiers under siege at the marina. And Julie's two pre-teen kids Laura and Zane (BROOKLYNN PROULX and SAGE RYAN) disobey Jake, who is supposed to be babysitting them, and take a boat out onto the lake to fish. WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT? Older teens will definitely want to see it, especially for the titillation factor. Younger teens may hear of the extreme content and want to see it, too. WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R For sequences of strong bloody horror violence and gore, graphic nudity, sexual content, language and some drug use. CAST AS ROLE MODELS: ELISABETH SHUE plays a sheriff and single mother of three kids who's in charge of protecting the small Arizona resort town where the piranha attacks occur. VING RHAMES plays her loyal, competent deputy who sacrifices his life to save as many people as he can. STEVEN R. McQUEEN plays Julie's son, a generally good-hearted late teenager who possibly makes a fatal mistake when he lies to his mother that he is home babysitting his two younger siblings. CHRISTOPHER LLOYD plays an eccentric local aquatic expert, who conveys most of the film's scientific and historical information on this particular breed of fish. BROOKLYNN PROULX and SAGE RYAN play Julie's precocious younger kids who go against both their mother and brother in taking a boat out fishing not knowing there is a killer piranha scare going on. JERRY O'CONNELL plays a smarmy videographer and owner of the Wild, Wild Girls Web site. He is a casual drinker and cocaine user, almost constantly objectifies women, and is rudely forward in getting women to perform acts on camera for him. JESSICA SZOHR plays Kelly, a local girl who Jake is smitten with. She is a generally good-hearted young woman, but is open to the manipulations of others. After protesting, for instance, she agrees to lick tequila off another woman's bare torso, kiss her, and then have Jake do the same all while Derrick is filming. KELLY BROOK and RILEY STEELE play the stars of Derrick's lewd videos. Both are drinkers, with the latter being a casual cocaine user. CAST, CREW, & TECHNICAL INFO HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit? Then read OUR TAKE of this film. OUR WORD TO PARENTS: The following is a brief summary of the content found in this horror movie that has been rated R. Profanity consists of at least 21 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. The film contains loads of nudity, mostly bare female breasts, but at least one severed penis. There is a wet T-shirt contest, several women who perform sexual acts and gyrations for a "Girls Gone Wild"-like camera crew, and other sexually promiscuous behavior. Violence consists of people being bitten repeatedly and eaten alive by swarming prehistoric piranha that hunt in packs. Other characters are manhandled, chopped up by a boat's propeller, decapitated by an out-of-control boat, split in half by an errant wire, and so forth. Many of the attacking fish are also killed by gunshot, explosion, taser, and Ving Rhames wielding an outboard motor. All of this has extremely bloody results. To cap it off, two pre-teen children are put in almost constant mortal jeopardy. Bad attitudes are present throughout, as is much potentially imitative behavior and various thematic elements. There is a spectacular amount of alcoholic beverage consumption throughout the film, some suggested drug (coke) use, and tense family material. If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, please read our more detailed review below. For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, the film is presented in 3-D and the director makes full use of the gimmick. There are also several sequences that go from slow-motion to hyper fast motion in the same scene to goose the action and bolster the titillation factor. ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE Matt cools a six pack of beers by hanging it over the side of his boat and into the lake. He pops one of the beers open and begins to drink it, but eventually drops it into the lake. The camera follows the bottle down to the bottom. Matt sings "Show Me the Way to Go Home," which features the lyric, "I had a little drink about an hour ago and it's gone right to my head." An opening title sequence shows multiple spring-breakers partying at a lakeside marina, with dozens drinking beer from cups, bottles, cans, and beer bongs. Derrick convinces Kelly to come along with him and his camera crew boating with the promise of champagne. Derrick pours tequila on a bikini-clad Crystal's bare stomach and breasts and Danni licks it off. He then gets Kelly to lick tequila off Danni's bare tummy and cleavage. Derrick then convinces Jake to do the same off of Kelly's bikini-clad front. It is implied that Derrick and Crystal have snorted cocaine on Derrick's boat, as both wipe remnants of a white powder from their nose and sniffle. Derrick swigs long and hard from a bottle of tequila and spits it in the air. Nearly everyone attending the Spring Break's main wet T-shirt contest and festivities is seen drinking a beer or some other alcoholic beverage. BLOOD/GORE Blood fills a lake as Matt is eaten alive by multiple piranhas. Moments after the feeding frenzy subsides, his severed, chewed-up hand pops into camera view. A cliff diver is eaten alive in the water, resulting in much floating blood. Matt's bloody, chewed-on corpse pops up from the water and scares Julie. In shallow water, Laura steps on the shard of a glass bottle and draws blood. Sam is unaware that they are swimming into the undersea lair of the piranha. After being bitten by one piranha, which draws blood, Sam illuminates the water and comes face to face with hundreds of piranha who devour him. The fish peck away at his flesh and limbs, with much of the really gruesome chewing obscured by bloody, dark water. The swarming piranha then swim out and attack Paula, chewing her up until a third diver pulls her away and back up to the boat. Thankfully, what's left of her does not stay alive for long. Her bloody remains twitch and die on the floor of the boat. Kelly vomits over the side of Derrick's boat. In 3-D, the vomit seemingly splatters the viewer's face. A few scenes later, Kelly is still vomiting in a toilet. Derrick films a very large-breasted parasailer who dips in and out of the water while being pulled by a speedboat. This activity draws a school of attacking piranhas that gnaw on the woman's bottom limbs, resulting in a lot of blood loss in the water. When she is last lifted out of the water, it is revealed that she has been chewed in half and her bloody torso bobs in the breeze. The centerpiece of the film is when thousands of piranhas descend upon hundreds of spring-breakers swimming and partying in the town's marina. The first victim is floating in a tire. She gets bitten from below, pulled underwater, and an explosion of blood ensues. From there, dozens and dozens of young men and women in the water begin to get bitten and eaten alive by swarms of piranha, and the lake water becomes saturated with blood. Multiple bite wounds are visible. Some victims are bitten down to their bones, faces are ripped off to reveal the skulls underneath, limbs are severed, and so forth. Multiple bite victims with their wounds oozing and spurting blood jump up onto a floating stage set up by a radio station. They begin to weigh down the stage and various small boats they have retreated to, sending even more people into the water to be chewed on and devoured with much blood visible. A large cable comes loose and cuts completely through one large-breasted, screaming woman. We first see half of her bikini top fall to the side. Then, the woman slowly comes apart with the upper third of her torso including her head falling into the water and sinking to the bottom leaving a cloud of blood in her wake. Todd selfishly commandeers a motorboat and drives it through the masses of bleeding victims eager to save himself. His motor becomes jammed with the long hair of a woman. He restarts it and the motor slices apart the woman's head, spurting much blood. Todd's boat is then capsized by those trying to climb to safety, sending Tom into the water to be eaten by the piranha as blood spurts everywhere. Dozens of wounded and bleeding spring-breakers make it to shore as piranha continue to nip at them. The bodies of other dead, partially eaten victims are shown in extreme close-up. We see a man whose leg has been almost completely eaten down to the bone. There is a woman who is being carried by two men, and her body literally comes apart as they rush to the beach. Many other people with gaping wounds make it to safety, presumably to bleed to death. Deputy Fallon eventually has enough and shoots wildly at the various attacking fish. When he runs out of ammo, he takes a boat's outboard motor and begins chopping up the swarming piranha only to eventually be overwhelmed by the pack and eaten alive. Julie, meanwhile, tasers several piranha, causing them to explode. In almost all cases, the 3D effects splatter the screen. The wet T-shirt contest's announcer (played by "Hostel" director Eli Roth in a cameo) falls into the water and is graphically decapitated by an out-of-control motorboat. Back on Derrick's boat, a large pack of piranha attack, sending Derrick and Crystal into the water where both are chewed up by the attacking fish. Derrick lives long enough to be pulled up from the lake and onto the front of the boat. But there is only half of him left. He then yells that the piranha chewed off his penis. The scene then cuts to underwater and we see Derrick's penis floating in the water. Two piranhas then fight over it, with the winner devouring in one large gulp only to spit it out half-eaten a few seconds later. For Crystal, one piranha eats her from the inside and comes out of her mouth, exploding her head right into the camera 3D-style. Jake throws a bloody, half-eaten corpse into the water that the piranhas then violently feast on. He uses the distraction to swim below to try and rescue Kelly. One potential survivor doesn't make it from boat to boat via a connecting rope and is eaten alive, with much blood. DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE Matt carelessly drops his bottle of beer into the lake and it sinks to the bottom where it rests with other discarded trash. Todd's friend gives Jake the middle-finger gesture and then throws a drink at him just as Todd and he drive off. A spring-breaker is drunk in public and puts his hands on Julie twice after she gives him a ticket and tells him to keep his hands to himself. Derrick goes through much of the film propositioning women to take off their tops and/or perform various sexually suggestive behaviors. Julie enters Jake's room a couple of times without knocking or waiting for Jake to open the door. Jake lies to his mother that he will babysit his two younger siblings. Instead, he pays them $60 to stay at home and not answer the phone while he goes to party with Kelly, Derrick, and his crew. Left on their own, Laura and Zane disobey Jake and instead go fishing on a small boat. Jake lies to his mother over the phone, telling her that he is back home and that his two younger siblings are in the backyard camping. When Kelly is worried that her boyfriend will see the sexy video she is making for Derrick's Web site, he tells her that "it's not cheating with another chick." Nearly every spring-break partier ignores Fallon and Julie's pleas to get out of the water. Derrick swigs long and hard from a bottle of tequila and spits it in the air. Derrick yells at Jake for not doing what he wants him to do, grabbing him with both hands around the throat and shouting that he is the one who got them lost and he is one that he didn't help with "the new bitch," meaning Kelly. Therefore, he should be the one to risk his life to get them to safety. FRIGHTENING SCENES Scenes listed under "Violence," "Blood/Gore" and "Jump Scenes" may be unsettling, suspenseful or scary to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material. Matt, alone in a boat, gets caught in a lake's whirlpool; capsizes; and his swarmed by multiple piranha and eaten alive. Julie and Fallon inspect Matt's boat while standing on a very rickety pier at night. Julie accidentally falls into the shallow water, and we get a fish's eye view underwater as the camera fast approaches her feet. She is about to safely get back on the pier when up pops Matt's bloody, half-eaten corpse. Laura wades into shallow water and tries to flag down a nearby speedboat to help her and her stranded brother. She steps on the shard of a glass bottle and draws blood, which attracts multiple piranhas. Fortunately, she gets out of the water and back onto shore before she ever realizes her life was in jeopardy. Sam is unaware that they are swimming into the undersea lair of the piranha. Julie and Fallon are police officers and therefore carry holstered fine arms. Fallon shoots his gun in the air to get a myriad of spring-breakers' attention. Julie, Fallon, and other law enforcement uses rifles and guns to shoot at attacking piranha during a feeding frenzy at the local marina. When they run out of ammo, Julie uses her taser gun while Fallon takes a boat's outboard motor and attempts to slice up as many fish as he can as people flee for their lives. A slow, quiet underwater shot is interrupted by a piranha zipping by at an incredibly high rate of speed. A piranha fetus floats by in a see-through, bubble-like egg. From inside, we see the little creature lurch violently with a high-pitched scream. Sam illuminates a section of an undersea cave to reveal hundreds of piranha who then proceed to wolf-pack him and eat him. Mr. Goodman sticks his hand in a fish tank where a captured piranha has been put, and the fish nearly bites it off. When hundreds of spring-breakers won't quiet themselves to listen, Fallon shoots a loud gun in the air. Thousands of piranha attack hundreds of spring-breakers in one, long jump scene of people being eaten alive while trying to swim for safety. The film ends with one of the survivors getting sneak-attacked and devoured by a super-sized piranha. MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE) An extreme amount of tense music occurs throughout the film. MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE) Matt sings "Show Me the Way to Go Home," which features the lyric, "I had a little drink about an hour ago and it's gone right to my head." During the opening credits, a song plays that includes lyrics about "sex on the first night" and "thinking about touching it." Songs on the soundtrack include such titles as "I Am Not a Whore" and "Fetish." The nearby gawkers chant "MOTOR BOAT" and Crystal responds by rubbing her face in Danni's cleavage. Danni and Crystal swim completely naked doing a slow underwater dance as opera music plays on the soundtrack and the 3-D camera glides along their nude bodies. As they swim under Derrick's glass-bottom boat, Derrick's assistant mutters, "If fish looked like that, I would f*ck fish and only fish." Derrick, meanwhile, implores the women to get closer to the bottom of the boat and "put your ass on the glass!" While diving, Sam declares that he'll get to keep back issues of "Jugs" magazine if he finds any on the bottom of the trash-strewn lake. On a dive, Paula remarks that an undersea canyon is the "longest one I've ever seen," and Sam takes it as a double entendre and thanks her. Derrick pours tequila on a bikini-clad Crystal's bare stomach and breasts and Danni licks it off. He then gets Kelly to lick tequila off Danni's bare tummy and cleavage. The two women then share a lingering kiss with tongue. Derrick then convinces Jake to do the same off of Kelly's bikini-clad front. At the main spring break party down at the local marina, the main event is a wet T-shirt contest with long, lingering shots of women in see-through white shirts and female buttocks in tight thongs and skimpy bikini panties. Most of the partygoers are also in various bikinis and swimsuits. There is one long shot of a topless woman played for maximum 3D effect. Derrick yells that the piranha chewed off his penis. The scene then cuts to underwater and we see Derrick's penis floating in the water. Two piranhas then fight over it, with the winner devouring the male member in one large gulp only to spit it out half-eaten a few seconds later. When Julie asks Danni if she can climb a rope, Danni replies, "I don't pole-dance for nothing." Kelly and Jake share a long kiss just before attempting to escape from Derrick's sinking yacht. SMOKING None. TENSE FAMILY SCENES It is not mentioned where Jake, Laura, and Zane's father is, whether he is dead, separated from their mother, divorced or other. Jake yells at his mother for knocking on his bedroom door and walking right in immediately. She then re-enters the room, while he is surfing Derrick's porn site, without knocking at all. Jake lies to Julie to her face that he will babysit his two younger siblings. Jake lies to Julie over the phone that he is home and watching the kids. Julie is beside herself when Jake calls her and tells her that he, Laura, and Zane are not home, but on a boat that is surrounded by killer piranha and slowly sinking. Julie, Laura, and Zane must climb across a rope connecting two boats -- one of which is sinking -- while piranhas nip at them from below. There is a woman who is being carried by two men, and her body literally comes apart as they rush to the beach. Many other people with gaping wounds make it to safety, presumably to bleed to death. Deputy Fallon eventually has enough and shoots wildly at the various attacking fish. When he runs out of ammo, he takes a boat's outboard motor and begins chopping up the swarming piranha only to eventually be overwhelmed by the pack and eaten alive. Julie, meanwhile, tasers several piranha, causing them to explode. In almost all cases, the 3D effects splatter the screen. The wet T-shirt contest's announcer (played by "Hostel" director Eli Roth in a cameo) falls into the water and is graphically decapitated by an out-of-control motorboat. Back on Derrick's boat, a large pack of piranha attack, sending Derrick and Crystal into the water where both are chewed up by the attacking fish. Derrick lives long enough to be pulled up from the lake and onto the front of the boat. But there is only half of him left. He then yells that the piranha chewed off his penis. The scene then cuts to underwater and we see Derrick's penis floating in the water. Two piranhas then fight over it, with the winner devouring in one large gulp only to spit it out half-eaten a few seconds later. For Crystal, one piranha eats her from the inside and comes out of her mouth, exploding her head right into the camera 3D-style. Kelly is trapped in a lower compartment of Derrick's yacht with the water rising and multiple piranha waiting to eat her. Some jump out of the water at her, and she hits them baseball-style with a frying pan. Jake throws a bloody, half-eaten corpse into the water that the piranhas then violently feast on. He uses the distraction to swim below to try and rescue Kelly. One potential survivor doesn't make it from boat to boat via a connecting rope and is eaten alive after being nipped and pecked multiple times. Jake uses flares and open propane tanks to explode Derrick's yacht and blow up a myriad of piranha in the process. The film ends with one of the survivors getting sneak-attacked and devoured by a super-sized piranha. Reviewed August 20, 2010 / Posted August 20, 2010
