PLOT: Having simultaneously arrived on Earth but raised in distinctly different environs, Megamind (voice of WILL FERRELL) and Metro Man (voice of BRAD PITT) have long been rivals, stemming from their time in school when Megamind decided to embrace evil since he couldn't compete with the better-looking and more popular goody two-shoes. Since then, the two men have battled for control of Metro City with Metro Man's physical prowess always besting Megamind's intellectual schemes. His usual plan is to kidnap TV reporter Roxanne Ritchi (voice of TINA FEY) -- who works with cameraman Hal (voice of JONAH HILL) who has a crush on her -- with the help of his fish-headed lieutenant, Minion (voice of DAVID CROSS), and an array of robots known as Brain bots. Roxanne is used to the drill and isn't remotely scared of Megamind, thus frustrating his evil desires. But she soon has reason to worry as it appears that Megamind not only has finally bested his longtime rival, but also seemingly killed him. Yet, while Minion enjoys the spoils of victory, Megamind soon finds himself bored and without purpose. Accordingly, he decides to alter Hal's DNA and turn him into a superhero in order to have a new rival to battle. However, Megamind doesn't anticipate falling for Roxanne -- while in the guise of a mild-mannered man -- or Hal's refusal to be a superhero and decision instead to become the villain known as Titan. WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT? It's a good bet many will, especially among the male pre-teen set. WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG For action and some language. CAST AS ROLE MODELS: MEGAMIND is the evil genius who finds his life without purpose after apparently defeating his lifelong competitor and resident do-gooder, Metro Man. Accordingly, he turns Hal into a superhero, but is shocked when he becomes evil, meaning Megamind has to turn good in order to defeat him (and try to win over Roxanne for whom he's become smitten, albeit in the guise of someone else). ROXANNE is the plucky TV reporter who's often the subject of his kidnappings (used to lure in Metro Man), but isn't remotely scared of him (and doesn't realize a mild-mannered man she now likes is really him in disguise). She must also contend with Hal being romantically interested in her, both in his normal self and as an ill-tempered super hero turned super villain. METRO MAN is the superhero who eventually tires of repeat battles with Megamind and always having to save the day. HAL is Roxanne's TV cameraman, completely smitten with her but not smooth in his moves. He thinks that being turned into a superhero will win her over, and thus is upset -- and turns to the evil side -- when that doesn't work. He causes all sorts of damage in Metro City and threatens various people. MINION is Megamind's fish-headed assistant, eager to help but somewhat dimwitted. CAST, CREW, & TECHNICAL INFO HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit? Then read OUR TAKE of this film. OUR WORD TO PARENTS: The following is a brief summary of the content found in this animated comedy/action flick that's rated PG. Profanity consists of a handful of religious expletives, while some colorful phrases are also uttered. There's brief kissing, and a woman is referred to as a temptress (but not meant sexually). Animated superhero type violence (fighting and bashing others about, property damage, etc.) occurs, but much of that's is played for laughs and/or action (although one character is intent on killing another), while some slapstick style material is also present. Some of the more intense scenes and moments of potential peril might be unsettling and/or suspenseful to younger kids. One major character appears to be killed (complete with a skeleton view) but we later see -- SPOILER ALERT -- that's it's been faked. Bad attitudes are present, as is potentially imitative behavior and some thematic elements. There's very brief alcohol content in one scene. If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content. For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, several scenes feature aerial views looking down, which could create vertigo issues for some viewers. Other shots are flying POV views, while a few shots feature cameras spinning around, including looking down. ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE Champagne is opened for Roxanne and Megamind (disguised as Bernard) in a restaurant where they do a toast and take a sip (and others appear to be drinking at other tables). BLOOD/GORE We briefly see what's presumably Metro Man's skeleton. Now a superhero and pulling his underwear up in wedgie form, Hal says what sounded like something about poo. DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE We see that baby Megamind was taught by prisoners to view cops as the bad guys and prisoners as the good ones (via flash cards). A prison warden keeps a watch intended for Megamind. Megamind decides, based on how others treated him and idolized Metro Man in school, to embrace villainy. Metro Man is boastful and soaks up attention. Megamind taunts Metro Man by stating, "Oooh, I'm shaking in my custom baby seal leather boots" as he shows them on his feet. We see a montage of Megamind and Minion taking advantage of Metro Man now out of the picture, including them having looted places, with Minion slapping a bag of money into Megamind's face (in slow motion). We also see a vehicle sticking halfway out of a building a story or more above the street. We see that rather than being a superhero, and due to Roxanne spurning his romantic advances, Hal is using his powers in a criminal fashion, with stolen money and such in his place. He also sets out to destroy much of Metro City, and wants to kill Megamind. Hal indicates he doesn't want to send Megamind to prison but instead wants to put him in the morgue. SPOILER ALERT: Roxanne and Megamind learn that Metro Man is alive, faked his own death (due the demands of being a superhero) and has taken up music. FRIGHTENING SCENES Scenes listed here and/or under "Violence" may be unsettling, suspenseful or scary to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material. We see Megamind falling from the sky in the city toward the street below (in slow motion), with his laser-like gun just out of reach. Several scenes feature aerial views looking down, which could create vertigo issues for some viewers. Roxanne is unfazed by Megamind threatening her with various things, including alligators down below her, a Gatling-type gun aimed at her, and various spinning blades and such brought near her head. Roxanne blows a spider toward Megamind and it lands on his eye. Megamind activates his "death ray" that harnesses the power of the sun to send a ray into an observatory, causing it to blow up (presumably with Metro Man inside). The blast knocks Megamind and Minion back and down across the city, while a skeleton in a cape is blasted through the air and lands on Megamind (including a close-up view of the skull). Roxanne nearly falls into a pit of alligators after opening a door and finding herself on just a narrow perch. Trying to impress Roxanne while in superhero mode, Hal flies off with her through the city, dropping her several times so that he can then zip down and rescue her before she hits the street or buildings below her. He also flies fast through the traffic down at street level. Hal grabs Roxanne and flies her high to the small point atop the tallest tower in the city. He then zips down and circles that fast, causing the top section to fall away. Megamind flies in and rescues her, but Hal heaves that part of the building toward them (causing other damage in the city). They race down the street, but the building top gains on them, with Megamind throwing off Roxanne (she lands atop a store canopy and is okay), while the building's point hits Megamind as both come to a stop. Minion appears to be dying and then stops, with Megamind throwing him into a fountain where he "comes back to life," prompting Megamind to say, "What a drama queen." GUNS/WEAPONS We see Megamind falling from the sky in the city toward the street below (in slow motion), with his laser-like gun just out of reach. Prison guards wear sidearms. Several cops fire their handguns into the air during a celebration for Metro Man. Roxanne is unfazed by Megamind threatening her with various things, including a Gatling-type gun aimed at her, and various spinning blades and such brought near her head. Megamind activates his "death ray" that harnesses the power of the sun to send a ray into an observatory, causing it to blow up (presumably with Metro Man inside). Megamind releases a timed bomb that explodes minutes later, just as he (in the guise of someone else) and Roxanne leave the building (which is destroyed). Roxanne and Megamind struggle over some sort of gun that shoots out something that eventually makes its way out of the building and up Hal's nose. Megamind (in the guise of someone else) throws some lit dynamite back to some of his brain bots that are destroyed by the explosion. As part of his training, lots of machine gun fire goes at Hal (in superhero mode), with him destroying that weapon. Megamind shoots Hal with a laser type gun that removes his superpowers. When people rush up to congratulate Megamind for saving the day, he misinterprets that and draws his gun, but Roxanne clears up that misunderstanding. IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR Phrases: "Got my butt kicked pretty good," "Mister goody two-shoes," "Un-freaking-believable," "You fools," "Temptress," "Oooh, I'm shaking in my custom baby seal leather boots," "Girls, girls...you're both pretty," "Wrap that up and give it to a child for Christmas," "It's gonna be sick," "Nuts" (crazy), "You don't know what's good for bad," "Could this day be any more fun-tastic?" The action, stunts and more might be enticing for some kids to try to imitate. Baby Metro Man blows a raspberry at baby Megamind. Kids throw kick-balls at Megamind, but he uses a device that causes them to ricochet and hit others and things. Metro Man juggles various babies at a celebratory gathering and then tosses them back to their mothers and one into a crib. Several cops fire their handguns into the air during a celebration for Metro Man. Megamind and Minion do some exaggerated "evil" laughing. We see a montage of Megamind and Minion taking advantage of Metro Man now out of the picture, including them having looted places, with Minion slapping a bag of money into Megamind's face (in slow motion). We also see a vehicle sticking halfway out of a building a story or more above the street. Megamind mispronounces various words (and some kids may do the same, as that's played for laughs). We see miscellaneous graffiti. A character says yes and touches his nose at the same time. Roxanne stops her van short, sending Megamind crashing into the inside of the windshield. JUMP SCENES As a warden looks into Megamind's prison cell portal window, Megamind suddenly pops up into view. MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE) A heavy amount of ominous, suspenseful, heavily dramatic and action-oriented music plays in the film. MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE) None. PROFANITY At least 1 use each of "Good Lord" and "Oh God." SEX/NUDITY Megamind refers to Roxanne as a "temptress" (but not meant sexually). Roxanne and Megamind (disguised as Bernard) briefly kiss in a restaurant, but Megamind then returns to normal form, upsetting her and those around them. As Megamind gets dressed in his new tight outfit, the camera is briefly on his clothed butt in that. Megamind tells Hal that he and Roxanne were "smooching up a storm." SMOKING None. TENSE FAMILY SCENES We see Megamind's back-story where his parents put him into an escape pod vessel and send him off into space as their world is apparently about to end (but all of this is played lightly and quickly). TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT Young Megamind being the last to be picked in school for anything. Megamind's decision, based on how others treated him and idolized Metro Man in school, to embrace villainy. How people can change. Metro Man is boastful and soaks up attention. The comment about not judging a book by its cover. SPOILER ALERT: Roxanne and Megamind learn that Metro Man is alive, faked his own death (due the demands of being a superhero) and has taken up music. VIOLENCE Most of the following is played for laughs and/or action. Baby Megamind's space pod bounces from asteroid to asteroid (or similar) while traveling through space, throttling the baby around inside the small vessel. As a toddler, young Megamind's big wheel type vehicle apparently causes some damage. In school, young Megamind accidentally causes some things in a trash can to catch on fire. Kids throw kick-balls at Megamind, but he uses a device that causes them to ricochet and hit others and things. We see headlines and related photos about Metro Man and Megamind's various battles, including Metro Man punching Megamind's face in one of them. An invisible limo pulls up and Minion sprays Roxanne with something that renders her unconscious. He then pulls her in, and then drives off, invisible again, with the vehicle hitting one person off in the distance. Metro Man blasts through a wall. One of Megamind's brain bots (small, flying robotic devices) bites or grabs his hand (causing him pain). Roxanne blows a spider toward Megamind and it lands on his eye. Minion then instinctively smashes the spider which means he really just punches Megamind in the face. A brain bot then bites or otherwise causes Megamind pain. Megamind activates his "death ray" that harnesses the power of the sun to send a ray into an observatory, causing it to blow up (presumably with Metro Man inside). The blast knocks Megamind and Minion back and down across the city, while a skeleton in a cape is blasted through the air and lands on Megamind (including a close-up view of the skull). We see a montage of Megamind and Minion taking advantage of Metro Man now out of the picture, including them having looted places, with Minion slapping a bag of money into Megamind's face (in slow motion). Megamind releases a timed bomb that explodes minutes later, just as he (in the guise of someone else) and Roxanne leave the building (which is destroyed). Some brain bots grab Megamind. Alternating between himself and a man whose identity he's taken (to make Roxanne believe the two are battling), Megamind throws himself back against a wall (as that other man). Roxanne and Megamind then struggle over some sort of gun that shoots out something that eventually makes its way out of the building and up Hal's nose. Megamind (in the guise of someone else) throws some lit dynamite back to some of his brain bots that are destroyed by the explosion. Megamind bursts through a door, and when Minion is out of knock-out spray to use on Hal, Megamind tells Minion to hit him with their "forget me" stick (a club that knocks out Hal, leaving a silly grin on his face). Now in superhero mode, but still clumsy, Hal crashes through a wall and causes some vehicles to crash. Then, as he practices, he breaks things and melts a dummy version of Megamind with his laser eyes. As part of his training, lots of machine gun fire goes at Hal (in superhero mode), with him destroying that weapon, while he avoids various burning barrels sent in his direction (like the old Donkey Kong video game). Megamind is twice banged into his invisible car. Upset that Roxanne isn't romantically interested in him, Hal (in superhero mode) causes several floors of glass windows in a tower to shatter. One brain bot shoves another to the front of their group. Megamind is in a robot suit that causes damage to the street with each footstep. He then blasts through a wall in that. Hal (in superhero mode) hits the large robot in which Megamind is inside, followed by the robot backhanding Hal away. The two then continue battling, with more hitting, the two sparring with yanked up street lights (like swords), and both crashing down through several floors of a building. They continue fighting, with Megamind avoiding Hal's eye laser beams and then having a large copper ball slammed down over his foe. Hal then rips through that and throws the huge ball at Megamind, with the ball crashing through a building. Hal flicks the mayor away with his super power enhanced fingers. Roxanne stops her van short, sending Megamind crashing into the inside of the windshield. Hal damages buildings with his laser eyes. SPOILER ALERT: Roxanne and Megamind learn that Metro Man is alive, faked his own death (due the demands of being a superhero) and has taken up music. Mad about that, Roxanne throws various things that hit him on the head but bounce off, while she also smashes a guitar over his head with similarly no ill-effect. Hal causes more damage in the city. Hal grabs Roxanne and flies her high to the small point atop the tallest tower in the city. He then zips down and circles that fast, causing the top section to fall away. Megamind flies in and rescues her, but Hal heaves that part of the building toward them (causing other damage in the city). They race down the street, but the building top gains on them, with Megamind throwing off Roxanne (she lands atop a store canopy and is okay), while the building's point hits Megamind as both come to a stop. Hal kicks a bus at Roxanne, but Metro Man (really Megamind in disguise) splits the bus in half, thus saving her. Megamind punches Hal in the face, but does him no harm. He then knocks Megamind aside and fires lasers at him. Megamind then gets into his invisible car, with Hal yanking off the car door. He's about to kill Megamind (after stepping down on him to stop his escape) when Megamind shoots him with a laser type gun that removes Hal's superpowers.
