QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: A clueless soldier of fortune is called back into action to thwart his archenemy, who wants to nuke Washington, D.C.
PLOT:
MacGruber (WILL FORTE) is a former special forces operative who has lived in exile since his wife, Casey (MAYA RUDOLPH), was killed on their wedding day a decade earlier. He gets a chance at revenge when Col. Jim Faith (POWERS BOOTHE) recruits him to stop Dieter Von Cunth (VAL KILMER), the megalomaniac who murdered MacGruber's bride and now wants to destroy Washington, D.C., with a stolen nuclear weapon.

After accidentally killing the first strike team he assembles, MacGruber recruits his former assistant, Vicki St. Elmo (KRISTEN WIIG), and young hotshot Lt. Dixon Piper (RYAN PHILLIPPE) for the mission. Vicki agrees to the assignment, because she secretly loves MacGruber. Piper vows to see that the mission is done properly, sensing MacGruber's ineptitude.

Together, they get into a series of misadventures on their way to a showdown with Cunth. These episodes include messing up a Las Vegas club, engaging in a shootout with bad guys in an abandoned warehouse, and crashing one of Cunth's parties. Along the way, MacGruber fights his growing sexual attraction to Vicki while trying to honor the memory of Casey.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Older teens who have followed the title character on "Saturday Night Live" will have some interest.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For strong crude and sexual content, violence, language and some nudity.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • WILL FORTE plays a bumbling parody of an ex-special forces operative who has served in every branch of the armed forces and has the medals to prove it. He has been out of action ever since his bride was killed on their wedding day a decade earlier. He is quite profane, loves to engage in sexually charged banter with men, and enjoys ripping out throats as his preferred manner of killing. He also has a penchant for getting naked in public. He is a casual drinker.
  • KRISTEN WIIG plays MacGruber's beleaguered assistant and romantic interest. She dreams of writing power ballads and has loved the inept soldier of fortune from afar for years. She is a casual drinker.
  • RYAN PHILLIPPE plays a straight-laced army lieutenant who once idolized MacGruber as a military legend, but is dismayed to find that the man is grossly incompetent in real life. He has no problem killing multiple bad guys and is a casual drinker.
  • VAL KILMER plays a murderous megalomaniac bent on using a stolen nuclear bomb to destroy the nation's capital and incinerate millions in the process. He is the man who murdered MacGruber's fiancée years earlier. His name sounds like a crass term for a woman's vagina. He also enjoys the occasional drink.
  • POWERS BOOTHE plays a straight-laced army colonel who entrusts the fate of the world to MacGruber and his team. He drinks whiskey while in uniform in at least one scene.
  • MAYA RUDOLPH plays MacGruber's dead wife, who shows up in ghost form at several points to help him deal with his sexual problems and reluctance to enter into a new, committed relationship.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this comedy that has been rated R. Profanity consists of at least 48 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. There is a vast amount of sexually related dialogue present, including one joke having to do with date rape and a running joke of the main character wanting to cut off the villain's penis and force-feed it to him. Nudity consists of the lead character (and one other male) showing his bare buttocks repeatedly throughout. There are two sex scenes that involve a lot of simulated grinding complete with wacky sex sounds.

Violence consists of people being shot repeatedly and blown up. There is also a running gag involving MacGruber ripping out bad guys' throats. Others are punched, kicked, manhandled, or threatened with weapons. Some of this has fairly bloody results. But given that this is a parody of '80s action movies like "Rambo," "Lethal Weapon, "Road House," and "Die Hard" and is generally played for laughs, those scenes and moments of peril will likely not be unsettling and/or suspenseful for most viewers.

Bad attitudes are present throughout, as is much potentially imitative behavior and various thematic elements. Drinking is present, as is a bit of smoking.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there is some fairly rapid-fire editing a la the Michael Bay movies. There are numerous aerial shots of different locales that go from slow-motion to very fast as to mimic some of the films this one is parodying.

  • BLOOD/GORE
  • An opening sequence features a multitude of bloody corpses who have recently been shot.
  • A lone survivor runs away only to be gunned down by a bad guy wielding a rifle. The head shot shows a brief blood spray from afar.
  • During a flashback sequence, Casey is blown up and Vicki gets sprayed with her blood and remains.
  • Piper is shown wearing a bandage on his nose soon after MacGruber punches him.
  • After being crushed between MacGruber's truck and a dumpster, one of Cunth's mercenaries is shown bloodied.
  • Piper emerges from the bathroom in MacGruber's trailer home and says "that was disgusting" as the sound of a flush is heard.
  • Piper shoots and kills at least three bad guys during a massive shootout at an industrial facility. The first man he shoots emits a thick spray of blood when the bullet rips into him. The others are shown dead and bloodied after being shot.
  • Following the shootout, Vicki claims to have urinated in her pants.
  • MacGruber eats a stalk of celery after it has been stuck inside of his rectum.
  • Piper sifts through MacGruber's notebook and finds crude drawings of one figure defecating and urinating on another figure.
  • MacGruber claims to have left behind an "upper-decker" in Cunth's toilet (defecating in the tank rather than the bowl), something the villain sarcastically thanks him for later in the movie.
  • When Vicki says she needs to use the bathroom, MacGruber asks her if she needs to go "number one or number two."
  • MacGruber is shown with a bloody bullet wound in his leg near his crotch. Vicki then looks to remove the bullet by graphically inserting a pair of pliers into the open wound and retrieving the projectile.
  • Colonel Faith is shown bleeding from a chest wound after being shot.
  • MacGruber literally rips the throats out of at least five bad guys during the film's climax. Each time he does this, a large amount of bloody is sprayed from the gaping hole in each victim's neck. The corpses are then shown bleeding profusely from their neck areas as they lie dead.
  • Piper uses MacGruber's celery trick, sticking a stalk of the vegetable up his rectum to distract some guards at the film's climax.
  • Cunth bleeds from the mouth after MacGruber punches him multiple times.
  • During the film's epilogue, one character returns seemingly from the dead with half of his face severely burned. We also see that his genitalia has been burned off. In its place is a scarred nub surrounded by public hair.
  • Several wedding attendees are sprayed with blood when this character fires a rocket that hits the ceremony's minister, killing him.
  • MacGruber urinates on the corpse of one of his dead enemies.
  • During a photo montage that plays out over the closing credits, MacGruber is shown attempting to defecate on a corpse in a body bag.

  • A kid rips MacGruber's necklace off and runs away with it.
  • MacGruber pulls into a parking lot and carelessly takes up two parking spaces.
  • When recruiting members for his first strike time, MacGruber shows open disgust that one of the candidates turns out to be gay and scratches him off the list of possibilities.

  • Surveillance photos of the club show MacGruber with two middle fingers in the air directed to the camera.
  • Vicki drops a dollar and some change in the employee's ticket cup, but MacGruber orders her to retrieve the money, which she does as the insulted worker looks on.
  • MacGruber twice puts Vicki in harm's way by dressing her up to, first, to look like him and then later to resemble a dead criminal rather than him risk his life. He also dresses Piper up to look like him, so the bad guys will shoot at the young lieutenant rather than at him.
  • MacGruber gives the middle finger gesture to a doorman at one of Cunth's parties and enters without an invitation.
  • Cunth blackmails a U.S. senator after he incurs a gambling debt.
  • MacGruber is called a "f*cking retard."
  • It is learned that Cunth has stolen a nuclear warhead and intends to fire it at the nation's capital during the President's State of the Union address. He has no great political purpose. Instead, he reveals that he was hired by the Chinese to incinerate Washington.
  • When gunmen attack, MacGruber uses Piper as a human shield unaware that he is wearing a bulletproof vest. He then tries to play it off that he knew Piper was wearing such a vest all along, but Piper doesn't believe him.
  • MacGruber claims he doesn't know why Cunth killed his wife. Then, he confesses to having had sex with Casey even though she was still Cunth's girlfriend when they were all friends in college. He eventually got the girl pregnant and convinced her to have an abortion.

  • MacGruber poses a corpse so that it is sitting in a chair with his two middle fingers pointing up.

  • During a photo montage that plays out over the closing credits, MacGruber is shown attempting to defecate on a corpse in a body bag.
  • During that same photo montage, MacGruber is shown writing a sign that says "NO TIPS" and placing it on the bar that is staffed by the worker from the coffeehouse earlier in the film who was denied a tip.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes that ordinarily would be scary to some are defused in this movie because of its broadly played, satirical elements. There's never any real sense of danger or fear. However...
  • As a clock ticks down, MacGruber attempts to defuse a nuclear bomb even though it is clear he has no expertise whatsoever in this area. Those with a working knowledge of the character and the recurring sketch on "Saturday Night Live" know that MacGruber never defuses the bomb. It always goes off.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Handguns/Machine Guns/Knives/Explosives/Rocket Launcher: Carried and/or used to threaten, wound or kill others and/or cause property damage. See "Violence" for details.

  • A crooked U.S. Senator uses a gun with a silencer on it to shoot Colonel Faith at point-blank range.
  • Piper gets into a second gun battle at the film's climax with multiple bad guys armed with automatic weapons. MacGruber finally confesses to not knowing how to shoot a gun. When Piper tells him how easy it is, he gives MacGruber two Uzi-like guns, and MacGruber fires wildly at the bad guys. His errant bullets give Piper sufficient cover to start picking off targets with his own gun.
  • Piper hits one guard in the face with his rifle, briefly knocking him out. He comes to and starts attacking Piper and MacGruber with switchblade-like knives in both hands.
  • MacGruber, Piper, and Vicki are held prisoner at gunpoint.

  • A U.S. Senator loses $750,000 at a poker game at Cunth's house, rendering him vulnerable to Cunth's manipulations.
  • MacGruber claims to have left behind an "upper-decker" in Cunth's toilet (defecating in the tank rather than the bowl), something the villain sarcastically thanks him for later in the movie.
  • Piper kicks MacGruber's car in retaliation for him using him as a human shield.
  • MacGruber keys a car, smashes its windows, and sets it on fire.
  • Piper uses MacGruber's celery trick, sticking a stalk of the vegetable up his rectum to distract some guards at the film's climax.
  • Some kids may be compelled to mimic MacGruber's ridiculous throat-ripping action move.
  • JUMP SCENES

  • That same sequence is repeated later from Vicki's perspective and she is sprayed with Casey's blood.

  • MacGruber is shown in a tanning bed wearing only his underpants, a clear bulge showing in the groin area.

  • MacGruber is shown sleeping shirtless.
  • MacGruber refers to his penis as a "20-lb. python in my pants."
  • Two men share a fairly long and lingering kiss.
  • MacGruber tells Piper that he bets he wishes his face was penis so he could have sex with MacGruber's face.
  • When MacGruber asks Piper what happened to his injured nose (after MacGruber punched him a couple of scenes earlier), Piper replies that he "banged it into a giant vagina."
  • MacGruber pleads with Piper to help him assemble a second strike team. When the young man turns him down, MacGruber says he will perform oral sex on him. He then says he will have actual sexual intercourse either way with him or let Piper watch as MacGruber has sex with someone else (the "f' word is used sexually during this). He then pulls down his pants, exposing his buttocks, and bends over a General's desk, inviting Piper to come enter him from behind. When Piper turns him down, MacGruber falls to the floor weeping and General Faith comes in to find the man on his floor with his pants around his ankles (but his remaining clothes conceal any further nudity).
  • A plump woman is shown nude posing for Cunth as he paints her likeness on a canvas. She is shown with one breast exposed as she holds the other one with her hand. A side view shows a portion of her backside. Cunth's abstract painting, meanwhile, clearly shows the one bare breast.
  • At one point, MacGruber yells, "That was f*cking t*ts!" It's his way of saying, "That was great!"
  • MacGruber finds a clue with the initials "STD," which he believes stands for "sexually transmitted disease" and says, "I've been there." In actuality, the initials stand for something entirely different.
  • To distract some gunmen standing guard at an industrial facility, MacGruber strips down and walks into their line of vision holding his genitals (his hands cover his penis and testicles, but we do see some pubic hair) and sporting a stalk of celery that protrudes from his anus. We see his bare buttocks repeatedly during this sequence.
  • MacGruber tells a young woman at Cunth's side that he hopes she enjoys being date-raped. To which Cunth replies that she is his daughter and not his date for the evening.
  • At multiple times during the course of the film, MacGruber threatens that he will cut off Cunth's penis and feed it to him. Late in the film, when he gets the upper hand on Cunth, he goes to do just that and finds that the man's genitalia has been burned off as a result of a bomb going off. In its place is a scarred nub surrounded by public hair.
  • Cunth's young twentysomething daughter shows a fair amount of cleavage in her party dress.

  • MacGruber confesses to having had sex with Cunth's girlfriend when they were all friends in college. He refers to the sex as "banging her" and intimates he enjoyed her "eating out my butt." He eventually got the girl pregnant and convinced her to have an abortion.
  • MacGruber refers to a woman as having a "rockin' bod."
  • MacGruber gets an off-camera erection (we don't see it) as Vicki uses pliers to retrieve a bullet from near his groin area.
  • After she confesses to being a virgin, MacGruber seduces her into the bedroom. What follows is an absurd sex scene that starts out as a backlit, slow-motion sequence a la "Top Gun." It is then followed by a realistic scene of MacGruber on top of Vicki, grinding away, moaning and hollering, and the two of them yelling "I'm gonna fill you up!" back to each other. We see MacGruber's bare butt during this sequence.
  • After the sex, MacGruber visits his wife's grave to apologize. Her ghost appears and the two of them proceed to have sex in the same ridiculous manner that he and Vicki just did with multiple thrusts and silly moans. We again see MacGruber's bare backside. The scene then changes to the perspective of a nearby laborer picking up garbage, and it is clear that MacGruber is having sex with himself.
  • We see multiple views of Piper's bare buttocks as he also uses MacGruber's celery trick to distract some of Cunth's men.

Late in the film, when he gets the upper hand on Cunth, he goes to do just that and finds that the man's genitalia has been burned off as a result of a bomb going off. In its place is a scarred nub surrounded by public hair.
  • When gunmen attack, MacGruber uses Piper as a human shield unaware that he is wearing a bulletproof vest. • A crooked senator shoots Colonel Faith in his office at point-blank range.

  • MacGruber and Piper get into a shootout with Cunth's men. MacGruber breaks his longstanding promise never to use guns, accepting Piper's offer to use two Uzi-like weapons to fire back, which he does so wildly. Piper shoots and kills multiple henchmen as MacGruber fires wildly.

  • A fight eventually breaks out with MacGruber ripping the throats out of two of Cunth's men, Piper shooting one of them, and Vicki performing a silly karate kick move that incapacitates another guard. MacGruber then performs an even sillier action-movie hero move that entails him slap-punching Cunth across the face multiple times, then handcuffing him to a piece of heavy machinery.
  • An explosive rocket is fired at MacGruber and Vicki's wedding, which hits the minister, blowing him up.
  • MacGruber is tackled by a bad guy, who he briefly wrestles and then beats up. He then pushes this character over the edge of a cliff, then proceeds to shoot him multiple times with a machine gun as the man plummets to his death. After that, he takes a rocket launcher and blows him up. He then urinates on him from atop the cliff.
