QUICK TAKE:
Romantic Dramedy: A pharmaceutical sales rep ends up falling for a young woman who has early onset Parkinson's Disease but wants no one's pity and isn't interested in a serious relationship.
PLOT:
Jamie Randall (JAKE GYLLENHAAL) is a natural born salesman and ladies man, but his amorous ways have lead to him being fired from his latest job. Unlike his younger brother, Josh (JOSH GAD) who made a fortune from a stock IPO, Jamie has no money to fall back on, and thus gets a sales rep job for a major pharmaceutical company.

Paired with veteran sales rep Bruce Winston (OLIVER PLATT), Jamie hits the road, trying to sell his company's wares to the likes of general practitioner Dr. Stan Knight (HANK AZARIA). To get to him, he sweeps one the doc's receptionists, Cindy (JUDY GREER), off her feet, but she becomes jealous when Jamie obviously shows interest in one of Stan's patients.

She's 26-year-old Maggie Murdock (ANNE HATHAWAY), a pretty woman who's facing her early onset Parkinson's Disease with humor and a willingness to live life to the fullest, including sleeping around. One of her last lovers was Trey Hannigan (GABRIEL MACHT), a sales rep for a rival pharmaceutical company that's also after the likes of Stan, but that doesn't stop her from bedding Jamie with the caveat that everything remains casual.

Yet, as he finally wins a way in to become Stan's favorite sales rep -- via a new little pill known as Viagra -- Jamie finds himself falling for Maggie, much to her dismay, although she eventually starts to feel the same way. With them facing an uncertain future -- regarding his career potential and her disease -- they have to figure out what's going to happen with them.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Older teens might be interested in it, as might anyone who's a fan of someone in the cast.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For strong sexual content, nudity, pervasive language, and some drug material.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • JAKE GYLLENHAAL plays a natural born salesman who sometimes breaks the rules to succeed and whose ways with the ladies sometimes gets him in trouble, but at others gives him a way in for doing more pharmaceutical sales. He sleeps with various women but then finds himself unexpectedly falling for Maggie, uses strong profanity, briefly smokes pot with his brother and drinks some.
  • ANNE HATHAWAY plays a 26-year-old woman suffering from early onset Parkinson's Disease, but wants no one's pity and isn't interested in a serious relationship, even with Jamie with whom she carries on a casual sex one. She uses strong profanity, briefly smokes pot and drinks some.
  • OLIVER PLATT plays Jamie's sales rep partner who shows him the ropes and then watches in awe as he not only sells Viagra, but also beds various women. He uses strong profanity and drinks some.
  • HANK AZARIA plays a doctor who allows Trey and then Jamie to hang out in exchange for what they can do for him (above and beyond selling him pharmaceutical drugs). He uses profanity.
  • JOSH GAD plays Jamie's younger (but adult) brother who made a fortune via an IPO, but doesn't have a happy marriage and thus ends up living with Jamie, hoping to ride his coattails of sexual fun with the ladies. He drinks, briefly smokes pot with his brother, and uses strong profanity.
  • GABRIEL MACHT plays a rival pharmaceutical sales rep who has a (cheating) past with Maggie, is in tight with Dr. Knight until Jamie shows up with the Viagra drug (over which he's less than pleased). He strikes Jamie in one scene.
  • JUDY GREER plays one of Stan's receptionists who Jamie sweeps off her feet, only to drop her in favor of Maggie.

  • SEX/NUDITY
  • While selling electronics in the store where he works, Jamie mentions a boom box being sexy. Later, he stares at a woman's clothed butt as she passes by and is then seen fooling around with her in the backroom. She's seated up on something and he's standing between her legs (no explicit nudity, but lots of her upper bare leg), with her asking what makes him so "damn sexy" and telling him "harder." Yet, she worries that her boyfriend or husband is just on the other side of the door, but Jamie jokes that the man can watch. She then accidentally/unintentionally dials her cell phone that rings to her boyfriend/husband who hears her sexual sounds and rushes back there to interrupt them (and punch Jamie in the face).
  • Josh tries to put his hand between his wife's legs at a family gathering, but she (showing cleavage) shuns him and gets up to get away from him.
  • Josh jokes that Jamie was told, "If you suck on my c*ck I'll get you an interview," but Jamie quickly adds he said no about that.
  • Josh tells Jamie that if the latter could "make money f*cking, you'd be richer than me."
  • We see dancers in midriff-revealing outfits doing sexy moves in an industry show.
  • We see Jamie shirtless in bed, with the sheet over his lower half, and then see that he has a woman beside him in bed (no nudity).
  • Bruce asks Jamie how often he masturbates, with Jamie asking what the quota is for that, and Bruce replies it's as often as one wants.
  • Jamie states that "no one ever got laid going Dutch."
  • Bruce tells Jamie, "You and your swinging d*ck might be my ticket to the big leagues."
  • Cindy drops some innuendo for Jamie by commenting on his suitcase and "That is a long handle." We then see a close-up of a box of condoms, followed by a shirtless Jamie in bed with Cindy, post-sex (he's shirtless).
  • A female sales rep says she's in the business to meet doctors and "breed with doctors."
  • Bruce refers to Stan and Trey as "butt buddies" (out of jealousy of Trey getting Stan's drug business).
  • Jamie essentially bribes Stan to allow him to shadow him in seeing his patients. That includes Maggie who's in to see Stan for her Parkinson's, and she states she was tested for many things, including syphilis. She then adds that she doesn't have that and thus doesn't have to feel like a "19th century slut." She then mentions an unrelated blotch on her breast. Stan wants to examine that, so she pulls her bare breast out, thus drawing Jamie's interest. Later, and out in the parking lot, she knows what Jamie was doing and thus hits him several times.
  • We hear Cindy on the phone doing what appears to be a phone sex bit with Jamie, stating she's wearing the white tights she wears every day. He then says, "I'll wear the stethoscope next time we play 'naughty nurse.'"
  • Josh arrives at Jamie's place, upset that his wife has kicked him out, and uses the "f" word sexually, He then says his wife said he was an Internet porn addict, and Jamie asks if that's true, and Josh says, "Of course I am."
  • When Maggie calls Jamie, Josh asks, "Is that the girl with the t*ts?" To Jamie on the phone and referring to Cindy, Maggie asks a question that includes, "The receptionist who you're f*cking?" Jamie then says he's sorry for staring at Maggie's "t*ts" but adds that they're really nice.
  • Jamie tells Maggie that her mind says one thing, but her body is saying another, prompting her to state he wants to get "laid." She then goes on that it's not even about sex for him, but instead is a way for him to spend a few hours of not having to deal with being him.
  • We next seem them stumbling into a place, making out and groping, with him behind her and tearing off part of her clothes below the waist. He then puts his hand down the front of her panties and we see quick views of them fooling around. We then see him on top of her on the floor, with both out of breath, post-sex, and she tells him it's time to go. He then gets up and we see his bare butt, while we see the side of hers as she continues to lie on the floor.
  • We next see them having sex standing in an alley, with movement and sounds (and her showing lots of leg in her garters).
  • We then see the two come out of a backroom where she works, her first followed by him adjusting his clothing.
  • Jamie answers the door in small briefs and a t-shirt to find Maggie there. She enters and drops her coat, revealing her full nudity. We only see a waist up view from both sides (bare breasts, bare back), but Jamie sees everything, as does Josh who was sleeping on the couch (we see the top of his butt crack with his underwear riding down a little). She then quickly covers herself up with her coat.
  • We see Jamie and Maggie in bed, post-sex, with him shirtless while we see her bare back. We then see a full view of them on the bed, completely nude, but due to positioning of their bodies and the camera, we only see partial bare butt views for both. She mentions that she likes having sex, especially with him, and then crawls on top of him and then him on her (partial bare breast and butt views). Josh then walks by in the hallway and hears sexual sounds from the other side of the door.
  • Maggie tells Jamie that he's just like her mother, prompting him to jokingly asks if she'd sleep with her mother (she says no). Jamie then asks if her mother is hotter than her. Maggie then states it's time for them to take off their clothes and for him to jump her.
  • Maggie playfully tells Jamie that he gets a special treat for bringing food to her. They start to kiss, but he states he has to pee and rushes off. We then see them having missionary position sex under the covers (with movement and sounds), and then she gets on top (bare breasts) and starts kissing down his body, presumably down to his crotch. He tells himself to focus, she asks if she should keep going, and he says this (an erection issue) never happens. He then says he just wants to have sex, but she replies that his body is saying otherwise. She then gives him a massage (with both sitting upright) as he states he could "give a sh*t" about Trey, but she comments that all men care about is performance, but have an appendage that won't get up if they're concerned about that. She then mentions hearing that his company is working on a "f*ck drug" (Viagra) and calls herself a "drug slut." She then jokes about the size of the problem and use other related innuendo including it growing larger, being stiff, and that he has a "limp sense of humor." They start tickling each other and then have missionary style sex on the sofa.
  • We see a large cut-out photo that shows the top of a bare butt.
  • Jamie and Bruce discuss Viagra, with talk of "massive boners" and Jamie asking, "Who can sell a d*ck drug better than me?"
  • Trey mockingly tells Jamie he'd do better if he could get Stan "laid." Stan asks Jamie if he could get him "laid," and Trey mentions Jamie being a "p*ssy hound" and Stan asks Jamie isn't he "banging" Maggie and comments on her unbelievable "t*ts."
  • Josh tries a pick-up line on a woman in a bar, asking, "What do you say we blow this joint and then each other?" She then smacks him.
  • Josh asks Jamie (about Maggie), "Does she go down on you?" adding that his wife looks at his "d*ck" like it's a specific fictional character.
  • A comment is made about why Jamie "screws" so many women.
  • We see a view looking through a rainy window of Jamie and Maggie having sex (out of focus). That then switches to a view in the room of them having missionary position sex, with both climaxing.
  • There's Viagra related talk, including about it being useful for various things, including penile injuries, no useful erection and such. We then see news clips and more talking about the drug, as well as Conan O'Brien doing a joke about Bob Dole using it to "nail" Heather Locklear.
  • Maggie states she doesn't care about Viagra and a bunch of old guys with "stiffies." She's in black panties and fishnet type stockings, and she drops down out of the camera shot to perform oral sex on Jamie who states, "You're my little blue pill."
  • Josh sees Jamie run out of the bedroom fully nude, with just his hand over his crotch, to grab a video camera to take back into the bedroom with Maggie. We don't see any taping, but she later tapes him while telling him to wake up, and he sleepily asks, "Again?" (meaning he thinks she wants more sex).
  • Jamie mentions "having just f*cked my girlfriend," but Maggie objects to use of "that" word. He thinks she's meaning the "f" word and says she uses it all of the time, but she says she's referring to "girlfriend."
  • We see Maggie in a bathtub behind Jamie, but nothing sexual is occurring.
  • We hear just Jamie's side of chatting with his mom on the phone about Viagra, saying it's not an aphrodisiac but instead is a vasodilator.
  • We see Jamie discussing Viagra with various women, with one asking if it makes "it" longer, and he replies, "In time or inches?" He then says women can take it too, with one asking if it will make them "hard," and he says it will increase lubrication. Another asks if the man "comes" inside them will it burn (after taking Viagra) and she or another asks what if that happens in the mouth.
  • Jamie returns home (from selling Viagra) and Maggie jokingly asks if he got "laid," and he jokes back that he did, six times. The two then kiss in bed, but stop when his heart starts racing (but that's from him wanting to tell her he loves her, and not a medical condition).
  • Jamie walks in to find Josh apparently masturbating (or preparing to do so) to Jamie and Maggie's sex tape. We see tissues, Vaseline and a brief view of the sex tape (some partial nudity of Jamie on Maggie) and Josh rushes off in embarrassment. Jamie is mad, saying he caught his brother masturbating to him having sex, with Josh asking if TV magnifies things, commenting on Maggie's "t*ts" and wonders if an anaconda got loose (referring to Jamie's unseen penis on the tape).
  • Jamie walks in to see Stan giving himself a self-injection of testosterone into his own butt (partial nudity). He then mentions where he's going is "a f*cking orgy masquerading as a medical convention."
  • Feeling sorry for herself, Maggie wonders why Jamie wants to be with her, especially when there are many girls "ready to blow you" at an upcoming convention. She then mentions sexy, limber cheerleader types who will be there. She then tells Jamie he isn't a good person "because you pity-f*ck the sick girl." She then admits that she almost went home with somebody from the clinic today.
  • At a small convention for Parkinson's sufferers, one woman jokes that who knew God wanted them to be so good at giving "hand jobs."
  • Maggie tells Jamie they should go home, and that they can even make love, but then he has to leave.
  • Stan tells Jamie (on the phone) about a pajama party (and wants him to bring some Viagra). When Josh hears Jamie use that term, he repeats it and wonders if the women will then be getting naked. They then go to the party where the front door is answered by a rival pharmaceutical sales rep that Jamie knows, and she's wearing pajamas and a cleavage-revealing bra (while holding a bottle of liquor), and members of the opposite sex are seen cavorting in the background.
  • At the pajama party, Josh stares at a woman's breasts in her bra to the point that she tells him he can touch them. He does, awkwardly groping her.
  • Elsewhere at that party, Jamie and the other rep go into a room where a Taiwanese woman is nude in a tube (we don't see anything) and the female rep suggestively states she's "Thai-curious." After passionately kissing that woman, the one in the tub says she's "Jamie-curious" as is the female rep who pops a Viagra pill into his mouth and then passionately kisses him. Three-way sex is implied as they're then seen after the fact, lying nude side by side but in alternating directions, and we see the Thai woman's full rear nudity. Jamie then panics, as he apparently still has an erection, and rushes into the bathroom to splash cold water onto that (we don't see it).
  • We then see Josh and the above party woman sitting up in bed, with her removing her top (bare breasts) and then climbing on top of him to have sex. When Jamie rushes into that room to get Josh (due to having an unwanted and hours long erection), he sees Josh on top of the woman (his bare butt between her legs) having sex with her.
  • Josh then drives Jamie to the emergency room with that still unseen erection. Some jokes are made about that, including Josh apparently hitting it with his hand and saying he was going for the gear shift. Josh is happy, saying "I f*cked that girl" (he uses the "f" word sexually again), and that he had been jealous of his brother's ability to have casual sex, but not anymore. He mentions his brother with the "enormous c*ck" that won't go down and then accidentally hits it again.
  • At the hospital, Jamie tells the admitting nurse that he's had a reaction to a drug. When she asks what kind, he pulls the pillow away from his crotch to show the shape of his erection in his boxers and she half-smiles.
  • When Jamie says he's moving to Chicago, Bruce tells him to go to the north side for "p*ssy" and then uses that term several times again.
  • On tape, Maggie says she's looking forward to some delicious reprobate sex with Jamie.
  • We see Jamie and Maggie in bed, presumably nude under the covers, just looking at each other.

  • Josh arrives at Jamie's place, upset that his wife has kicked him out (he moves in with Jamie), and uses the "f" word sexually, He then says his wife said he was an Internet porn addict, and Jamie asks if that's true, and Josh says, "Of course I am."
  • We hear that Trey (married) had an affair with Maggie in the past.
