QUICK TAKE:
Horror/Thriller: A bullied 12-year-old boy befriends a girl who's just moved in next door, unaware that she's really a vampire.
PLOT:
It's 1983 and Owen (KODI SMIT-McPHEE) is a 12-year-old boy leading an unhappy life in Los Alamos, New Mexico where he lives with his mother (CARA BUONO) who drowns her unhappiness in wine over her failing marriage (her husband, Owen's father, has already moved out). To make matters worse, Owen must contend with the school bully, Kenny (DYLAN MINNETTE), and his two goons who make his life a living hell from which there seems to be no escape.

But thinks look up a bit when a girl who appears to be his age, Abby (CHLOE GRACE MORETZ), moves in next door with a man (RICHARD JENKINS) Owen believes to be her father. Although she initially tells Owen they can't be friends just because that's the way it is, they do become just that, although he only sees her at night -- often barefoot -- out in their complex's snowy courtyard.

Little does he know that her father figure also goes out at night to abduct, kill and bleed victims, all to feed Abby who turns out to be a vampire forever stuck at the age of 12. His actions have drawn the attention of a local cop (ELIAS KOTEAS) who starts to zero in on the suspect, all of which threatens Abby's source of life-sustaining nourishment. As that occurs and Owen must contend with Kenny and his bullying, he and Abby continue their unlikely friendship that continues even after he eventually realizes her true nature.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're into vampire movies (especially those about kids rather than adults) they could be intrigued by this one.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For strong bloody horror violence, language and a brief sexual situation.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • KODI SMIT-McPHEE plays a 12-year boy, unhappy in his life, not only due to having no friends and his parents divorcing, but also because he's being tormented by bullies at school. But things change when he befriends Abby, even if he finds her a little strange, and that friendship continues even after he learns of her true nature.
  • CHLOE GRACE MORETZ plays his new next door neighbor, a girl who appears to be 12 but is actually a much older vampire forever stuck at that age. Knowing her nature, she initially doesn't want to be friends with Owen, but then does, and forms a close bond with him. But when her hunger calls, she goes into full vampire mode, violently killing her victims and drinking their blood.
  • RICHARD JENKINS plays a man Owen believes to be her father but who's really just her protector who abducts and kills people for Abby and her appetite for blood. He doesn't like doing that and feels too old for such behavior, but continues nonetheless. He also uses strong profanity and smokes.
  • CARA BUONO plays Owen's mom who drowns her failed marriage in wine.
  • ELIAS KOTEAS plays the local cop who's hot on the trail of finding the serial killer.
  • DYLAN MINNETTE plays the school bully who, along with his two friends, routinely torments Owen, both emotionally and physically. He uses strong profanity.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a quick look at the content found in this horror film that's been rated R. Profanity consists of at least 13 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. The beginning of a sexual encounter is seen (including a bare breast view), while an older female vampire stuck in the body of a 12-year-girl strips and gets into bed with a 12-year-old boy, but nothing sexual happens.

Violence includes very graphic vampire attacks on others, while two people die after catching on fire, and a man pours acid on his face. All of that has extremely bloody and gory results, and those scenes and moments of peril will likely be unsettling, suspenseful and/or scary to various viewers. Some bullies also torment a boy, both physically and emotionally.

Bad attitudes are present, as is tense family material. Drinking (including alcoholism or behavior bordering on that) and smoking occurs, while a teen appears to smoke a joint. All sorts of imitative behavior is also present as are thematic elements.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there's a little of that from ambulance lights illuminating snow in front of the windshield. Later, there's some of that from passing street lights seen from inside a moving vehicle.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there's bouncy camera footage inside a speeding ambulance, while a car accident (including it tumbling down a hill) is seen from inside the vehicle.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Owen's mom has wine.
  • Owen talks of an older friend he had who would go to a secret hideout and drink and smoke with his friends.
  • We see an empty wine glass by Owen's mom who's asleep.
  • We see Owen's mom asleep or passed out with an empty wine glass near her.
  • Kenny's brother smokes what appears to be a joint.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • An ambulance speeds along, with a badly wounded man inside. He appears to be convulsing due to his skin being badly burned and bloody from acid (self-applied and only briefly/partially seen in this scene). We later see the man's badly burned & blistered hand in the hospital, followed by an aerial view looking down from a window to his bloody body in the snow (after going out the window -- not seen here).
  • We see urine pooling on the floor beneath Owen when Kenny and his pals pin the boy and give him a severe wedgie. They stop when they see that, with one saying Owen "pissed" himself.
  • We see Abby's protector hoist up a man's body in the woods, jab a knife into his throat, and then collect the copious amount of blood that pours out into a jug beneath him. Later, however, Abby's protector ends up tripping, with the jug then going down a hill and the steaming blood pours out of that onto the ground.
  • Owen tells Abby she smells funny and we hear what initially sound like intestinal sounds on her part but then realize they're hunger pangs.
  • A man enters a short and dimly lit tunnel at night, spotting a girl seated at the other end, curled up. He goes over to see if she's okay (it turns out to be Abby) and she asks if he'll carry her. He agrees and she wraps her legs around his waist, but then viciously attacks him, biting into his neck and slamming him to the tunnel walls and then floor. When she's done, she breaks his neck (and both of them are very bloody, she from feeding on him).
  • We see Abby's protector dragging a dead body through the snowy woods. He then dumps it into a creek and uses a pole to push it under the water.
  • We hear the sound of Owen urinating. Moments later, Kenny whacks Owen several times with a collapsible rod, the last one to the cheek that draws a little blood.
  • After turning down Owen's offer of some candy, Abby then accepts, but moments later is nearly retching outside.
  • After a bad car crash, Abby's protector and another man are very bloody. Seeing the original driver and others coming, Abby's protector takes acid and pours it all over his face, severely burning his skin (leaving it bloody, blistered and such).
  • SPOILER ALERT: We see Abby's protector in the hospital and his face is horribly disfigured, burned and blistered from earlier acid. He then allows Abby to feed on him (with more blood, both on him and her mouth) and his body then falls out the window to the snowy ground below (where we see the same earlier view as before of his bloody body in the snow).
  • Abby's face is bloody (from an earlier feeding) when she visits Owen.
  • Owen swings a pole and hits Kenny hard on the head, knocking him down to the ice (cutting his ear badly, with bloody results).
  • We see a block of ice being lifted from a lake with a dead body stuck in the bottom of that.
  • Not realizing she's a vampire and wanting to do a blood pact with her, Owen slices his own finger, drawing blood that drips onto the floor. Abby can't resist and kneels down to lick that blood off the floor, and when she looks up, her eyes are all evil-looking and she races out. We then see her quickly climb a tree and sit there until she sees a woman pass by. She hops down and attacks the woman, biting and bloodying her, but a man chases Abby away.
  • We see a vampire victim in the hospital. When she comes to, she sees a little blood on the bandage covering her IV. From outside her room, we see her apparently feeding on her own arm, and we then see that she is (with very bloody results). A nurse then walks in, not seeing this, and opens the drapes. The sunshine then causes the woman to catch on fire and her skin to blister and burn.
  • After Abby enters Owen's apartment without him inviting her in (a vampire rule), she starts to convulse, blood pools by her feet, and lots of blood starts running down her face until he offers the invite and her bleeding stops. As she showers, we see blood mixing in with the water by her feet (that's all that's seen).
  • Abby violently attacks a man, bites and thrashes him all about, with his blood spraying onto the door and flowing from his neck when she bites him there (he's very bloody).
  • Abby is bloody (on her face and clothing) after attacking and killing a man, and she then kisses Owen, leaving blood on his mouth.
  • Kenny, his brother and two goons set up an attack on Owen. Owen is then held by his head underwater and struggles. From his vantage point, we then see partial views of the bullies being attacked, thrashed about and rapidly dragged across the surface of the water (with bloody results in the water, including a severed head sinking down near Owen, and on the pool deck). We then see blood on Abby's feet (she being the attacker).
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Although it's her nature and the only way for her to survive, Abby kills various people, as does her protector who abducts, kills and bleeds victims to provide blood for her.
  • Owen litters some candy wrappers on the ground and then covers them in the snow with his foot.
  • Owen does some Peeping Tom behavior with his telescope, looking at various people in apartments across the courtyard.
  • A wad of wet paper hits Owen in class (apparently thrown by Kenny).
  • Kenny and his pals pick on a girl in a school swimming pool, including undoing the back of her bathing suit. Nothing is seen as the gym teacher calls out Kenny and the girl punches Kenny in the shoulder.
  • Kenny and his pals bully Owen, including saying "What a little f*cking girl he is" and with Kenny repeatedly whacking Owen with a rolled up towel. They then pin Owen to the floor and give him a severe wedgie, resulting in him losing bladder control.
  • After Abby tells Owen she can't be his friend (saying that's just the way it is -- and due to her being a vampire, although she doesn't let on about that), he acts like he doesn't care but refers to her as an idiot.
  • Owen hears sounds while urinating in a bathroom stall. He then realizes it's Kenny and his two goons, with Kenny whacking Owen several times with a collapsible rod, the last one to the cheek that draws a little blood.
  • Owen steals money from his mom's purse (to buy candy for himself and Abby).
  • Kenny's older brother makes fun of Owen having hit Kenny, mockingly asking "How's the cripple?" and then stating, "That kid wailed on your ass." He also calls Kenny a little girl and roughs him up a bit for some keys.
  • When Owen calls his dad and wonders if people can be evil, his father thinks those are ideas the boy's mom put into his head and comments on that "religious crap."
  • Kenny, his brother and two goons set up an attack on Owen by pouring kerosene into a dumpster and then setting that on fire outside an indoor pool. The gym teacher goes out and they then lock the door, tell everyone to get out of the pool and then chase Owen into the locker room where he grabs his knife but not in time. They control, drag and then take him back to the pool and throw him in. Owen is then told (by Kenny's brother, who holds the knife) that if he can hold his breath for three minutes, he'll just get cut, but if he can't, the boy will cut out Owen's eye. Owen is then held by his head underwater and struggles.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence," "Blood/Gore" and "Jump Scenes" may be unsettling, suspenseful or scary to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material.
  • That also holds true for those sensitive to being bullied (in the scenes where Owen has that happen to him).
  • As the investigating cop talks on the phone, a nurse in a hospital room screams, and he runs in there to find the window open. He then looks outside that shows an aerial view looking down from a window to a man's bloody body in the snow (after going out the window -- not seen here).
The sunshine then causes the woman to catch on fire and her skin to blister and burn, and the nurse ends up catching on fire as she goes to help. The fire quickly spreads and we later hear both died from that.
  • The investigating cop knocks on doors looking for witnesses, and Owen (who's in Abby's apartment) looks through the peephole, but a squeaking floor alerts the cop that someone is in there. He then kicks open the door and enters with his handgun drawn, all while Owen hides nearby. The cop slowly walks through the apartment with his gun (stepping on a toy that startles him), and then spots the closed bathroom door (with us knowing Abby's in there, from a note she left Owen). He slowly reaches for the knob and then goes in, slowly looking around. He then spots several heavy blankets in the bathtub and starts pulling them away, eventually revealing a sleeping Abby. Owen is suddenly there, startling the cop, but Abby then violently attacks, bites and thrashes him all about, with his blood spraying onto the door and flowing from his neck when she bites him there (he's very bloody).
  • After being shocked upon witnessing Abby violently attack and kill a man, Owen walks away. We then see her slowly walk up behind Owen, but all she does is hug him.
From his vantage point, we then see partial views of the bullies being attacked, thrashed about and rapidly dragged across the surface of the water (with bloody results in the water, including a severed head sinking down near Owen, and on the pool deck). We then see blood on Abby's feet (she being the attacker).
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • We see Owen wearing a mask, shirtless, holding a big kitchen knife and play-acting into a mirror, asking, "Hey little girl, are you scared?" (we later learn this is him repeating Kenny's taunts).
  • Owen acts out his frustration with being bullied by Kenny by repeatedly jabbing a pocket knife into a tree.
  • Owen has the blade of a pocketknife in his mouth.
  • Abby's protector stabs a knife into a victim's neck to bleed him (as the man hangs upside down).
  • The investigating cop enters Abby's apartment with his handgun drawn.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "What a f*cking little girl he is," "What the f*ck?" "F*cking freak," "You f*cking bitch," "I don't think you're gonna do a f*cking thing," "Jesus Christ, are you f*cking crazy?" "Gimme the f*cking keys," "Oh sh*t," "Hey little girl, are you scared?" "Pissed himself," "Idiot," "Jesus Christ, dude," "You son of a bitch," "I must be gone and live or stay and die," "And ram it right up your ass," "We'll beat his little ass later," "How's the cripple?" "That kid wailed on your ass," "Shut up" and "Religious crap."
  • It's possible some kids could imitate some of the scares in the film (to scare others).
  • Owen litters some candy wrappers on the ground and then covers them in the snow with his foot.
  • We see Owen wearing a mask, shirtless, holding a big kitchen knife and play-acting into a mirror, asking, "Hey little girl, are you scared?" (we later learn this is him repeating Kenny's taunts).
  • Owen does some Peeping Tom behavior with his telescope, looking at various people in apartments across the courtyard.

  • Not realizing she's a vampire and wanting to do a blood pact with her, Owen slices his own finger, drawing blood that drips onto the floor.
  • Abby goes out Owen's window (several floors up) upon hearing Owen's mom come home.

  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • An extreme amount of ominous, suspenseful and scary music plays in the film.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • The song "Turning Japanese" (that's supposedly about masturbation but uses veiled and thus non-explicit lyrics) is heard.
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 13 "f" words, 3 "s" words, 3 asses, 2 craps, 1 S.O.B., 5 uses of "Jesus Christ," 2 each of "God," "Jesus" and "Jesus, Mary and Joseph" and 1 use each of "G-damn" and "Oh my God."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • Owen does some Peeping Tom behavior with his telescope (while shirtless), looking at various people in apartments across the courtyard. In one, he spots a man nuzzling on a woman's neck, running his hand inside her robe, and then pulling that aside to reveal her bare breast. She then spots Owen watching them and he ducks down. When he looks again, she's closing the shades and nothing else is seen.
  • Kenny and his pals pick on a girl in a school swimming pool, including undoing the back of her bathing suit. Nothing is seen as the gym teacher calls out Kenny and the girl punches Kenny in the shoulder.
  • The song "Turning Japanese" (that's supposedly about masturbation but uses veiled and thus non-explicit lyrics) is heard.
  • We briefly see a miscellaneous couple making out in a store.
  • Abby goes into Owen's room and tells him not to look as she strips to full nudity (we partially see the beginning of that, but very out of focus, and thus no details can be seen). She then climbs into bed with him (he's clothed) and he notes she's nude, but nothing happens between them.

  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • Owen's mom talks with her estranged husband on the phone and isn't happy with the way he's apparently talking to her (we don't hear his side, but do hear hers, including telling him he better call his lawyer). Owen hears all of that, and later sees his mom crying.
  • Abby states that her mom is dead and Owen tells her his parents are getting divorced.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Dealing with bullies.
  • Vampires.
  • How kids feel they'll forever be trapped at whatever age in which they're unhappy.
  • Friendship.
  • Divorce.
  • Alcoholism.
  • The investigating cop asks an injured man (and suspect) if he's a Satanist.
  • Hearing about Owen's bully problems, Abby tells him he has to hit back and do so hard.
  • VIOLENCE
  • A wad of wet paper hits Owen in class (apparently thrown by Kenny).
  • Kenny and his pals pick on a girl in a school swimming pool, including undoing the back of her bathing suit. Nothing is seen as the gym teacher calls out Kenny and the girl punches Kenny in the shoulder.

  • We then see Abby's protector hoist up the man's body in the woods, jab a knife into his throat, and then collect the copious amount of blood that pours out into a jug beneath him. Later, however, Abby's protector ends up tripping, with the jug then going down a hill and the steaming blood pours out of that onto the ground.

  • Owen hears sounds while urinating in a bathroom stall. He then realizes it's Kenny and his two goons, with Kenny whacking Owen several times with a collapsible rod, the last one to the cheek that draws a little blood.
  • Abby's protector hides in another potential victim's car, but his plan changes when the driver picks up a friend and they then stop at a gas station where the light illuminates the foot wells of the backseat where he's hiding with a garbage bag over his head as a mask. When the passenger spots him (with the driver in the station), Abby's protector attacks him, and there's a lot of struggling until the protector uses chloroform or something similar to render the man unconscious. Abby's protector then climbs into the driver's seat and takes off, with the driver and some others chasing after him as he backs through traffic. That's followed by a bad crash and roll down a hill (all seen from inside the vehicle where Abby's protector and the other man are severely tossed about, leaving both of them very bloody). When Abby's protector sees the driver and those others coming, he takes acid and pours it all over his face, severely burning his skin (leaving it bloody, blistered and such).
  • SPOILER ALERT: We see Abby's protector in the hospital and his face is horribly disfigured, burned and blistered from earlier acid. He then allows Abby to feed on him (with more blood, both on him and her mouth) and his body then falls out the window to the snowy ground below.
  • Kenny and his two goons approach Owen at a frozen lake where their class is playing hockey. Kenny grabs a pole, but Kenny taunts him, saying Owen isn't going to do anything but that he (Kenny) is going to take it and "ram it right up your ass." The fire quickly spreads and we later hear both died from that.
  • After Abby enters Owen's apartment without him inviting her in (a vampire rule), she starts to convulse, blood pools by her feet, and lots of blood starts running down her face until he offers the invite and her bleeding stops.
  • Abby violently attacks a man, bites and thrashes him all about, with his blood spraying onto the door and flowing from his neck when she bites him there (he's very bloody).
