PLOT: Decades ago, Adam (JOHN CUSACK), Lou (ROB CORDDRY) and Nick (CRAIG ROBINSON) were best friends who always hung out and partied together. Now, however, they've grown apart and are a generally unhappy lot. Nick runs a dog shop where he must retrieve things canines have eaten, Adam's girlfriend has left him and taken half or more of their possessions, and Lou is once again suicidal. His latest attempt reunites the three friends and they decide, with Adam's 20-year-old nephew Jacob (CLARK DUKE) in tow, to return to a ski resort, one of their favorite and wild vacation spots from the past. Things don't start off on a promising note, however, as the town isn't as lively as they remember and the lodge's bitter, one-armed bellhop, Phil (CRISPIN GLOVER), doesn't particularly make them feel welcome. But the hot tub appears to be working, so all four men jump in, drink heavily, and accidentally short out the tub's electronics. Unbeknownst to them, that's sent the four guys through some sort of time portal back to 1986 and one of their previous vacations there. While Jacob appears as himself, and the three friends still see each other in their current, middle-aged state, everyone else sees them as they appeared as teens back in the mid eighties. All of which means Lou is going to have a bad run-in with ski bully Blaine (SEBASTIAN STAN), while Adam is still going to be dating Jennie (LYNDSY FONSECA) but find himself attracted to rock 'n roll reporter April (LIZZY CAPLAN). Nick will be in a groupie-attracting band and thus worry that he's going to cheat on his 21st century wife, Courtney (KELLEE STEWART), and Jacob is going to realize that his mom, Kelly (COLLETTE WOLFE), was a promiscuous partier. They understand that they need to make sure everything plays out exactly as it did back then to avoid changing the future. Yet, they're tempted by reliving their wild youth along with thoughts of possibly making changes they think could improve their lot in life. Accordingly, as a mystical maintenance repairman (CHEVY CHASE) occasionally shows up reporting on a pending deadline to return to the future, the men must decide what they want to do. WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT? It's a good bet many teens will be interested, especially if they're fans of anyone in the cast and/or raunchy, R-rated comedies. WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R For strong crude and sexual content, nudity, drug use and pervasive language. CAST AS ROLE MODELS: Considering what occurs in the film (drug use, casual sex, nonstop profanity, etc. from generally unhappy people), it's doubtful many, if any, parents would consider any of the major characters as good role models for kids. OUR WORD TO PARENTS: The following is a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated comedy. Profanity consists of at least 212 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue (including material that's explicit) is present, as are sexual encounters (with movement, nudity and sounds), other nudity (bare breasts and butts), views of scantily clad women, and many comedy bits involving sexually related material and behavior. Violence includes a man losing his arm and a person being stabbed in the face with a plastic fork (with bloody results, played for comedy) and several instances of fighting (with some bloody results), while that and lots of other behavior might be enticing for kids to imitate. Drug use (pot, coke, mushrooms), drinking and brief smoking are all present, as are bad attitudes and tense family material. Various instances of crude and scatological humor also occur. For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there's some of that from a storm. ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE There are various quick cuts at the opening of the film showing all sorts of wild partying and other images including drinking (and Lou pouring beer onto his own nipple) and drug use (such as using a pot pipe, etc.). Adam has a beer. Lou drives fast down a street and into his garage, smashing into stuff on the inside wall. We then see that he's drunk (he drinks liquor straight from the bottle) and apparently suicidal as he sings, drinks and revs the engine to fill the garage with exhaust (he lives but is hospitalized). Adam has a drink. We hear that Lou is an alcoholic. Lou mentions having a bottle of scotch to wash down their vacation. When the guys go to pick up Lou for their trip, he's drinking from a bottle out on the street and he throws it down (littering) before getting in the car. Moments later, we see that he has bottles of liquor in a bag. All four guys have beer, with Lou stating they should get some cocaine and then asks Jacob if he has any Ritalin. Jacob says he doesn't, but does have something similar. Lou then says they can wrap that up and stick it up their "asses." All four guys drink a lot while in the hot tub (seen in a montage). The guys find their old suitcase (that has a marijuana leaf symbol on the outside) filled with all sorts of drugs in their lodge room. Lou then smokes a pot pipe and Nick cuts some cocaine, only to be seen moments later with a great deal all over his face. Lou drinks liquor straight from the bottle while Jacob has a beer. Kelly has a drink where miscellaneous people also drink. We then see her holding a small packet of coke and she comments on going off to use that. Adam drinks liquor poured down and then off an ice sculpture. We see Jennie chugging shots, while Adam has a beer. Jenny drinks. Following Jennie breaking up with him, we see Adam drunk with lots of empty bottles around him. He then gets into his suitcase of drugs, including taking a pot hit from a bong and apparently taking mushrooms (Jacob finds them and questions him about that). He then tries to do coke but Jacob stops him, although Adam manages to eat some more hallucinogenic mushrooms and then take another hit from the bong. Adam and April have wine. Lou and Nick have beer. The hot tub repairman has a drink. Lou repeatedly slides shots of liquor over to Kelly who doesn't catch them and lets them break upon impact with the end of the bar. After Blaine beats him up and his friends didn't show to have his back, Lou is up on a roof, drinking and intoxicated from the scotch (and he nearly falls off). We see Lou with wine. Kelly asks Jacob if the drink he's holding has alcohol in it and he says yes. The four guys and others all raise a toast. Lou and a young woman snort coke and then make out. BLOOD/GORE At Nick's dog shop, we see a dog dragging its bottom along the floor, so Nick dons a glove, sticks his hand up the dog's rear (we don't see the actual insertion) and then flings the feces covered car keys to the dog's owner (who catches that in his hand). During all of that, there's the comment that he gets "sh*t out of dogs' asses." While in his hospital bed, Lou purposefully starts pulling out his catheter (under the sheet) until it pops out and accidentally sprays urine all over him, Adam and Nick. The guys discover a dead animal in the hot tub (what appears to be a raccoon or something similar). Lou asks Jacob if he has any Ritalin. Jacob says he doesn't, but does have something similar. Lou then says they can wrap that up and stick it up their "asses." After lots of drinking, Lou says he's going to be sick and then does projectile vomiting that blasts a nearby squirrel away. A ski patrol official metaphorically comments on something going up the "ass" of one of the men. We hear Lou urinating into a toilet and then onto the floor as he turns to look at something. When he yells at the guys to come in there, Jacob says they don't want to see his "giant sh*t (but that's not why he's calling them). We see a flashback to Adam with a bloody face from Jennie having stabbed him in the eye with a plastic fork. Lou accidentally bumps into Blaine, prompting the latter to be a jerk and eventually punch Lou in the face, bloodying his nose, while he's later seen with a related (but now non-bleeding) cut by his eye. Jenny ends up stabbing Adam near the eye with a plastic fork, once again bloodying him. When Nick comes to in a bathroom, he sees Lou relieving himself in a urinal. When he turns toward Nick, Lou appears to have semen all over his face. Nick is grossed-out, especially when Lou tastes some of that, but then reveals it's just liquid soap, jokingly telling Nick that it's like he's never seen "cum" on a friend's face before. After taunting Lou about if he'll get his friends to hold his "sack" (scrotum), Blaine punches Lou in the face, bloodying his nose. Blaine punches Lou in the face, slightly bloodying him. Lou then leaps through the air to deliver a return punch, but misses, thus allowing Blaine to punch him in the gut and then face again. Lou then drives Blaine backwards to the floor where he pummels him, slightly bloodying him. Another comedy bit about Phil potentially losing his arm features a large vehicle flying by and barely missing him, but a plow strikes his arm from the other direction, ripping it off (with lots of blood squirting out, prompting Jacob to projectile vomit from the sight of that). We later see a flashback to Phil's severed arm being recovered for reattachment. DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE Adam returns home to find that his girlfriend has left him and removed at least half of the possessions, while leaving a note for him that reads, "Go f*ck yourself." When the guys go to pick up Lou for their trip, he's drinking from a bottle out on the street and he throws it down (littering) before getting in the car. Lou isn't pleased to see that Jacob will be joining them on their trip and makes that perfectly clear. He then gets mad when Jacob does some texting on his phone and comments that's why the young man doesn't have a girlfriend. Jacob responds he's had plenty of girlfriends, with Lou saying Jacob has had lots of boyfriends, adding, "gay ones." Lou belittles Nick for having a last name that's a hyphenate of his and Courtney's. Phil is a bitter bellhop and throws the guys' bags off the luggage cart onto the floor. Some viewers might not like a running gag about Phil being a one-armed bellhop, and repeat instances in 1986 when he still has both arms but is in various situations where it appears that's going to be the time he loses the arm (all played for comedy). A ski patrol official metaphorically comments on something going up the "ass" of one of the men. He also refers to Lou as "Nancy." Trying to figure out what's going on and freaked out that Phil now has two arms, Adam and Lou tackle him hard to the floor for answers, with Phil worriedly asking if they're going to rape him (some viewers might not like the comedy aspect of that). Blaine uses the term "f*cking faggot" about one of the guys. Lou accidentally bumps into Blaine, prompting the latter to be a jerk and eventually punch Lou in the face, bloodying his nose. About cuts on his face (from a fight), Lou lies to a young woman that it's from him being hit by a truck. When Jenny breaks up with Adam, he's shocked and says, "You little bitch," prompting her to stab him in the face. A miscellaneous man tells the woman with him, "Shut the f*ck up." He then brandishes a handgun to make Lou hold up his end of a bet (that involved performing oral sex on Nick without his permission to be included in that bet - when he sees Nick's penis he comments on how black it is: Nick is African-American). April lies about staying with a couple in their house and then breaks into that with Adam (they then hang out there until the gay owners return, prompting April and Adam to flee -- played for comedy). One of the guys tells Nick, "You're Courtney's f*cking bitch." After taunting Lou about if he'll get his friends to hold his "sack" (scrotum), Blaine punches Lou in the face, bloodying his nose. Lou's friends forget to show up and have his back for his fight with Blaine. Adam ransacks Blaine's room and Lou does the same to another as they search for something vital they need to return to the future. We hear an upset Nick talking to his wife on the phone, commenting on her sucking a guy's "balls" and licking his "booty." He then asks if the guy she cheated with (in the future) has a "d*ck" bigger than his, and then says she's probably "sucking someone's d*ck" right now. The joke is that his future wife is just a shocked 9-year-old girl (in 1986) on the phone (some viewers might not like that joke). Lou playfully asks Kelly and Jacob, "What are you two faggots talking about?" FRIGHTENING SCENES Scenes listed here are played for comedy. We see Nick carving an ice sculpture with a chainsaw. Since we know he loses his arm at some point, we're led to believe this might be the moment as he tosses the chainsaw up in the air (but then catches it) and then slips, with the chainsaw falling toward him (but it lands in the ground next to his arm). Another comedy bit about Phil potentially losing his arm includes him reaching out of an elevator for luggage and getting stuck. The elevator goes down and others think that will be the moment, but it stops. It then starts going up and everyone thinks the same, but Phil manages to stop the car just in time by hitting the operating lever with his foot. After Blaine beats him up and his friends didn't show to have his back, Lou is up on a roof, drinking and intoxicated from the scotch. His friends finally show up, but he starts to slide off, with one grabbing him but then sliding toward the edge as well, with the rest joining in and Phil being the one who ends up pulling them all to safety (and we think that's when Phil is going to lose his arm). Another comedy bit about Phil potentially losing his arm features a large vehicle flying by and barely missing him, but a plow strikes his arm from the other direction, ripping it off (with lots of blood squirting out, prompting Jacob to projectile vomit from the sight of that). We later see a flashback to Phil's severed arm being recovered for reattachment. A storm quickly brews and then forms something like a waterspout above the hot tub while a vortex in the water transports some people back to the future (those afraid of severe storms might be unsettled by this, but it's all played fairly lightly). GUNS/WEAPONS Lou states that if were really going to commit suicide he'd do so by shooting his "d*ck" with a shotgun. During a montage of drinking and partying in the hot tub, one of the guys holds a gun (or fake one) to Lou's head (this may be real or just imagined as other unrelated but imagined things are also seen during this). We briefly see a clip from the movie "Red Dawn" where a character holds an automatic weapon in the air. A man twice shows a handgun to make Lou hold up his end of a sexually related bet (where he must perform oral sex on Nick). MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE) Some songs had lyrics that we couldn't fully hear and/or understand, thus presenting the possibility that they might contain potentially objectionable content. A song has the lyric "Talk dirty to me." A performed rap song had what sounded like several uses of the "f" word in it. PROFANITY At least 212 "f" words (10 used with "mother," 6 used sexually as are the terms "bang," "laid," "screw" and "stuffing"), 53 "s" words, 15 slang terms using male genitals ("d*ck," "c*ck" and "pole"), 4 using female ones ("p*ssy"), 4 for breasts (variations of "t*t"), 21 asses (10 used with "hole"), 7 damns, 2 hells, 13 uses of "Oh my God," 7 of "G-damn," 5 of "God," 3 of "Jesus" and 1 use each of "Jesus Christ," "Oh God" and "Sweet Lord." SEX/NUDITY There are various quick cuts at the opening of the film showing all sorts of wild partying and other images including women in bikinis in hot tubs, a classic style painting features one bare-breasted woman playfully pinching the bare breast of another woman, and Lou pours beer onto his own nipple. Noting that a taxidermist is dating his mom, Jacob laments that the man is "stuffing my mother." Thinking Lou is asleep in his hospital room, Adam and Nick discuss his issues, including having erectile dysfunction and a shriveled up "ball" (testicle). Lou states that if were really going to commit suicide he'd do so by shooting his "d*ck" with a shotgun. About their pending vacation, Nick states that everybody gets "laid." The camera shows a shot of the resort sign where some letters have fallen away so that "d*ck" is what's most readily read. Adam comments on losing his virginity junior year with Jennie at the lodge and that they spent their time having sex there. Seeing that Phil has only one arm, the guys joke about him "jerking off" with one hand, while Lou states he uses two oiled hands. The guys get into the hot tub and we see Adam and Lou's bare butts, while Jacob strips down to his underwear (and Nick is already in the water). We then see a close-up view of Lou's bare butt as well as imagined views of sexually related behavior, including a bare-breasted woman in there with them and a person in a bear costume seemingly performing oral sex on one of the guys (head under the water and bubbles so no contact is viewed). Lou shouts out, "I wanna f*ck something." One of the guys comments about an old shirt of his that got "so much f*cking p*ssy" in the past. About them appearing younger in their mirror reflection but Jacob still looking the same age, Lou asks Jacob that shouldn't he be swimming in a guy's "ball sack." Discussing time travel and related changes, and using the "Terminator" movie as their guide, one of the guys laments that with a change that would mean the two main human characters never "f*cked." Adam comments again about Lou's old carving regarding Adam sucking "c*cks" and "d*cks," and other related comments are made about that. About Nick being in a band in the past, Adam asks, "Didn't you bang that groupie?" followed by "You banged her" and another sexual use of that term. Lou makes a sexual thrust gesture into the air with his body. Jennie kisses Adam and then hops up onto him as he stands, her legs around his body. We then see the close-up view of her butt in tight attire, and the guys comment on why Adam broke up with her in the past. Kelly states she's going to go off, find a guy and "wax his f*cking pole." The men then discuss what she really means by that, and Jacob (her son from the future) comments that she "seems kind of slutty." We see Jennie in a lingerie type robe that's open in the front, showing her bra and panties. She comments to Adam about their previous night together, that it was "freaking hot," that he lasted ten minutes, and that she was good and thinks she "came." Lou mentions having a functioning penis in the past (which is where he is now). We see a view of a bare-breasted woman having sex on top of Nick in a tub (with movement). Later, we see a different view of the same thing (more movement and bare breasts, along with sounds) with him repeatedly saying his future wife's name, while the woman keeps correcting him (after she says she's not going back -- the last part of the old phrase "Once you go black, you don't go back"). A young woman comes on to Lou, kisses him, and then wants Jacob to come along with them back to her place (they do, Jacob reluctantly), with her saying, "I only do two at a time" (meaning sex). We next see them in her place, and she then strips down to just her panties (we see bare breasts), and then pulls down Jacob's pants (nothing seen). A phone call interrupts her, and she walks off, with Lou (who's fully nude -- we see his full rear nudity) saying someone can "suck my f*cking nuts" and then telling Jacob it's every guy's dream to have a three-way. Jacob says yes, but not with a second guy, but Lou tells him to stop complaining and then tries to get Jacob to look at his unseen penis (with Lou commenting on a "full-on rager" and a "half-chub"). Jacob then runs out. Later, when Jacob complains about that, Lou states, " I didn't f*ck that girl," but Jacob refers to her as (what sounded like) a "Chinese finger tramp." Lou tries to take advantage of knowledge of the future by placing bets on just that. He bets with a man over a football game and says that if he (Lou) wins, the man's wife must give him a "blow job," and then clarifies that as a classy one. The man then says that if he (the man) wins, Lou must do the same to Nick, with the latter being upset by that and telling Nick he doesn't like him "taking liberties with my d*ck." As the game progresses, Lou states he's really good at getting "head," but the game turns out differently than it should, prompting the other man to show his gun and tell Lou, "Start sucking gay-lord." The crowd then starts chanting "Suck!" and with another gun threat, Lou kneels in front of Nick (whose pants are down, but we only see partial bare butt as his shirt is still on). Jacob then sees this and rushes at Lou, but then disappears when the sex stops. Lou then realizes that means he's Jacob's father and thus must continue having sex with Kelly. We then hear him (from behind closed doors) loudly saying it might take a while, but then amends that to being inside her, that he's going to "come," comments on the "jizz" and that there's "so much f*cking semen." We then see him having sex with her, missionary style (her legs straight up in the air), with movement and related sounds. Jacob then reappears (due to the conception that just occurred) and tackles Lou to the floor. During this, Jacob says, "Nobody f*cked my mom in the past," while Kelly states that she feels pregnant. We hear an upset Nick talking to his wife on the phone, commenting on her sucking a guy's "balls" and licking his "booty." He then asks if the guy she cheated with (in the future) has a "d*ck" bigger than his, and then says she's probably "sucking someone's d*ck" right now. The joke is that his future wife is just a shocked 9-year-old girl (in 1986) on the phone (some viewers might not like that joke). Lou confesses to Adam, "I f*cked your sister." We see Lou with his shirt open. We see miscellaneous cleavage. About a now-changed Internet search engine, Jacob asks if that's what's used to find porn. April and Adam passionately kiss while standing and clothed. Courtney tells Nick that she would never "screw around" on him. We see posters of bikini-clad women. A young woman suggestively licks a male singer's microphone. Lou and a young woman snort coke and then make out. SMOKING There are various quick cuts at the opening of the film showing all sorts of wild partying and other images including someone with a cigar. April briefly lights a cigar, doesn't like the taste, and throws it away, while some people smoke at a party. TENSE FAMILY SCENES We see that a woman has left Adam and taken half or more of their possessions, so we think it's his wife, but later hear she was his girlfriend. We hear that Lou is divorced. Jacob mentions that he doesn't know who his father is, and isn't happy to see that his mom is a promiscuous young woman in the past (but doesn't let her know he's her future son). Nick states that his wife cheated on him. Adam tells April a story about wanting to go a different than usual restaurant as a kid, resulting in his father dying from E coli. TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT Friends who eventually grow apart. Suicidal tendencies. Learning about how a parent was in their past. Partying and promiscuity. We hear that Lou is an alcoholic. The comment that there's no escaping the inevitable. The comment to embrace the chaos of life. Middle-aged angst, disappointment and depression. VIOLENCE While skiing, Jacob accidentally runs into a padded pole, while Lou runs into Adam and Nick, sending all of them tumbling down the slope where they hit trees, etc. before landing hard (played as comedy). Freaked out by realizing they're back in 1986, Nick rushes out, knocking people aside while doing so. To make him regain his composure, Jacob then slaps Nick. Trying to figure out what's going on and freaked out that Phil now has two arms, Adam and Lou tackle him hard to the floor for answers, with Phil worriedly asking if they're going to rape him (some viewers might not like the comedy aspect of that). Jennie slaps Lou. Lou accidentally bumps into Blaine, prompting the latter to be a jerk and eventually punch Lou in the face, bloodying his nose, while he's later seen with a related (but now non-bleeding) cut by his eye. Jenny ends up stabbing Adam near the eye with a plastic fork, once again bloodying him. After taunting Lou about if he'll get his friends to hold his "sack" (scrotum), Blaine punches Lou in the face, bloodying his nose. Jacob tackles Lou to the floor after catching him having sex with his mom. Blaine punches Lou in the face, slightly bloodying him. Lou then leaps through the air to deliver a return punch, but misses, thus allowing Blaine to punch him in the gut and then face again. Lou then drives Blaine backwards to the floor where he pummels him, slightly bloodying him. Another comedy bit about Phil potentially losing his arm features a large vehicle flying by and barely missing him, but a plow strikes his arm from the other direction, ripping it off (with lots of blood squirting out, prompting Jacob to projectile vomit from the sight of that).
