QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: A young music label employee escorts a washed-up and hedonistic rock 'n roller from London to Los Angeles for an anniversary concert and must contend with the various setbacks and related indignities that occur along the way.
PLOT:
Aaron Green (JONAH HILL) is a young employee at M & A Records whose CEO, Sergio Roma (SEAN 'P. DIDDY' COMBS), is desirous of a new money-making act. Aaron states that since it's the upcoming tenth anniversary of a live album by legendary British rocker Aldous Snow (RUSSELL BRAND), they could stage a live concert and make money from that as well as reissuing Snow's old albums.

Sergio isn't so sure, mainly because Aldous is a washed up and hedonistic man who fell off the wagon into drug-fueled depravity following both his break-up with fellow performer Jackie Q (ROSE BYRNE) as well as the disastrous reception years ago for his last release, the completely misguided "African Child." Nevertheless, Sergio decides it's worth the risk and thus gives Aaron just a few days to fly over to London and retrieve and escort Aldous to New York City for a TV appearance before getting him to a Los Angeles concert venue known as the Greek.

Leaving live-in girlfriend and resident doctor Daphne Binks (ELISABETH MOSS) back home, Aaron sets off on his mission. As he quickly learns that getting Aldous to follow their tight schedule is next to impossible, he must contend with the various indignities and setbacks that befall him as he learns the hard way about the pitfalls of sex, drugs and rock 'n roll.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
It's a good bet many teens will, especially if they're fans of "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" from which this film is a spin-off.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For strong sexual content and drug use throughout, and pervasive language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
Considering what occurs in the film (drug use, cheating, group sex, etc.) it's doubtful many, if any, parents would consider any of the major characters as good role models.

OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
Here's a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated comedy. Profanity consists of at least 109 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue, some song lyrics and related material (including music videos) are present throughout the film as is other sexual content (including intercourse and oral sex encounters), while nudity (breasts, butts and pixilated views of male and female genitals) also occurs.

A faked gun battle is seen in a music video, a person is knifed off camera (with bloody results), there's a multi-person fight (played for laughs) and other contact, and an injury has graphic results (also played for laughs) while crude humor occurs in various scenes.

Drinking and/or drug use occur throughout the movie (with related behavioral results). Bad attitudes are present, as is all sorts of potentially imitative behavior, while some tense family material is also present.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there's a partial strobe effect in a club.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, we see some bouncy point of view camera work from Aaron running about.

ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • In an interview, there's talk about Aldous' drinking problems in the past but now being sober for seven years with Jackie Q. But based on a comment she makes, he asks if she's been drinking (she says she's had a few) and then sarcastically asks Jackie Q if she wants him drinking again. He then says he'll do lines (of cocaine) off the reporter's forehead while inside her "up to my nuts." He then falls off the wagon, with a reporter saying it's time to invest in Jack Daniels while we see a montage of Aldous drinking and acting drunkenly, while we also see a sign for the club "Whiskey A Go Go."
  • A song includes many uses of the "f" word, including "Let's get f*cked up."
  • Sergio talks about Aldous being a drug addict.
  • Aldous has a beer when Aaron meets him, and then has more of that or another, while Aaron has a beer after a guy with Aldous asks Aaron if he wants (among other things) some codeine.
  • Aldous and his friends have shots, while Aaron and others also drink. Later, all of them have beer.
  • People have drinks in a club.
  • We see a montage of Aaron and Aldous drinking.
  • Aldous gives a glass of champagne to Aaron on a plane and drinks his own.
  • Aldous says he's going to need a drink if he's going to appear on The Today Show and has the limo stop so that he can buy drugs from a dealer on the street. We then see him drinking, including from a flask, in the limo, but Sergio (on the phone) tells Aaron that Aldous must be sober for his appearance. Accordingly, Aaron asks for a hit off the flask and quickly downs that. Aldous then lights up a joint and Aaron asks for a hit off that and tries to smoke it down to a nub, followed by drinking from one of the limo decanters. He's then intoxicated/high from all of that as they appear on the set and ends up getting sick. In the subsequent interview, Meredith Vieira asks Aldous about his drug problem and if he's on drugs now. He feigns innocence, but then mouths that he is on drugs.
  • Aldous and Aaron have drinks, as do miscellaneous people. They then have more, Aldous asks Aaron if he's ever had absinthe, and we then see slow motion footage of them reacting to having had some of that.
  • Daphne has a beer.
  • Aaron vomits from being drunk.
  • Aldous drinks from a bottle.
  • Aldous has a beer.
  • Right before going through airport security, Aldous produces a balloon from his mouth and tells Aaron he needs to put it in his (Aaron's) "bottom hole," amends that to rectum, and then tells him to put the dope "in your asshole." Aaron refuses and calls Sergio for help, but his boss tells him to comply, saying, "You hold all the power in your ass." Aaron then walks over behind some potted plants inside the airport, reaches his hand down the back of his pants and apparently puts the balloon up his rectum (he wipes his hand on the plant leaves). During this, Aldous makes loud comments, such as that not being a hobby and to get on with it. Later, Aaron says he's going to sneeze and worries that his bowels will evacuate the balloon, prompting Aldous to tell him he needs to clinch his bottom to prevent that. Aldous also jokes aloud that Aaron's "bum" is full of heroin and that he's a drug mule. Later, Aldous tickles Aaron to try to make him loose control so he can retrieve his drugs, and we see a silhouette of Aldous crouching behind him, with his hand at (and presumably up) Aaron's butt. When Aldous retrieves the balloon, Aaron grabs at it, it breaks, and the heroin spills to the floor, and Aaron scrunches that on the floor with his foot.
  • Aldous then orders him to replace that, so Aaron goes to the hotel front desk and asks the man if he can look up a guest, spelling his name as "H-E-R-O-I-N." The clerk initially acts offended, but then has Aaron travel with him to pick up some drugs, but that deal goes badly and Aaron doesn't get any. Upon returning to the hotel room, Aldous informs him that getting drugs in Vegas apparently is easy (meaning he already replaced his).
  • Performers and patrons in a club hold or have drinks, including Aldous and Aaron. Later, they have drinks with Aldous' dad and the woman with him.
  • People have drinks in a strip club, including Aaron who has a beer. We later see more drinking, including by Sergio.
  • Aldous and his dad share a huge joint, and then offer that to Aaron when he looks like he needs a hit from it. They refer to that as a "Jeffrey" and say it's a bit of this and that, followed by Aldous saying it has all sorts of drugs in it, including weed, opium, heroin, meth, peyote, angel dust and more (saying it's like a drug Neapolitan). Aaron then has a reaction to that, saying he can't breathe, all while Sergio shows up and says they should take a hit from his Jeffrey. He then reacts to that as well, with Aldous finally injecting a syringe of adrenaline into Aaron to bring him back down.
  • Jackie Q talks of being on "E" (presumably ecstasy) in the past, but now being clean.
  • Aldous has a drink while watching Aaron and Daphne kiss.
  • Aaron tells Aldous that the latter is "just a f*cking junkie."
  • Miscellaneous people have drinks.
  • Sergio gives Aaron two pills to give to an injured Aldous to keep him performing, but Aaron throws them aside.
  • Aldous sings a lyric about something being like a needle in the arm and bringing him down.
  • Aldous comments on being sober for a number of months, and then about the people in the audience applauding that probably being on drugs.
  • Aldous sings a lyric about when the world hands you a Jeffrey (referring to the above drug).
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • In a music video, we see some dead bodies on the ground (from a gun battle - all faked) while Aldous gives birth to an African baby elsewhere (complete with related birth goo, umbilical cord, etc.).
  • In a montage, we see Aldous' urine stream as he urinates on something indoors.
  • An exhausted Daphne gets into bed still in her hospital gown that has someone else's dried blood on it (she mentions a patient whose heart exploded).
  • We see Aaron's vomit hitting a toilet.
  • Aldous shows Aaron a photo on his phone of the latter vomiting the night before.
  • We see fresh vomit on Aaron's face and jacket after he's guzzled down liquor and smoked a joint, taking both from Aldous to try to keep him sober.
  • Aaron vomits from being drunk.
  • Aaron goes with a man to buy drugs for Aldous, but the dealer pulls a knife and we next see Aaron driving the man whose clothes are bloody from being stabbed. Aaron then dumps him off at the emergency room, still with bloody clothes.
  • Aaron states that if he doesn't get any sleep, he's going to throw up (he doesn't do the latter).
  • We hear a TV show's title as "Red, White and Spew."
  • Despondent over his life, Aldous stands on the edge of a building top, and we see his POV looking down. He then ends up falling and lands in the pool below, although his arm whacks the side of that hard. We then see blood mixing with the pool water, followed by several views of his badly broken and bloody arm (with the bone sticking out).
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • About his music video "African Child," Aldous is seen and heard musing about his idea for it, seeing himself as an "African white Christ from space" and "an African white space Christ" (some might not like the references, but the joke is that the music video and related single were a flop and the third worst thing to happen to Africa).
  • During a montage, we see Aldous throwing a bottle at a videographer and kicking at a paparazzi photographer.
  • Sergio makes one of his employees throw his (the employee's) cell phone out the door when the latter interrupts an important business meeting.
  • Sergio jokingly misconstrues something Aaron says, asking him, "What are you calling me, a house n*gger?"
  • Daphne informs Aaron that she'd like them to move to Seattle where she can take a better job. He first asks if she wants to "cut my balls off" so that she can carry them around with her (referring to her emasculating him -- in his mind) and then if she's having her period or something.
  • Aldous' mom refers to his dad as a "piece of sh*t moocher," while Aldous refers to her as an "old bag."
  • Spotting a guy who looks a bit like Draco Malfoy in the "Harry Potter" movies, Aaron makes several such Potter references to his face.
  • Thinking he has permission to be brutally honest about Aldous' last release, Aaron rips into it, including using strong profanity and questioning what Aldous was thinking.
  • Some viewers might not like a commercial for a TV series called "Blind Medicine" (featuring a blind doctor -- played for laughs).
  • Aldous blames Aaron for them being late to the set of a TV appearance, when in reality it was his fault.
  • Right before going through airport security, Aldous produces a balloon from his mouth and tells Aaron he needs to put it in his (Aaron's) "bottom hole," amends that to rectum, and then tells him to put the dope "in your asshole." • Sergio tells Aaron (about Aldous and others), "We're gonna party these limey pr*cks into the ground."
  • About a young woman who apparently violated him with a large dildo, Aaron later walks out and tells Aldous and his dad that he's been raped (some viewers might not like this being played for comedy).
  • On the phone, Aaron tells Daphne it's not that impressive that she's a doctor, stating that even the Nazis had doctors. He also ends up cheating on her (while under the influence of liquor and/or drugs).
  • Jackie Q admits to Aldous that she had an affair in the past and that their son is not biologically his (he then refers to her as a "Danish tart").
  • Sergio gives Aaron two pills to give to an injured Aldous to keep him performing, but Aaron throws them aside.
  • Aldous jokes that Aaron, dressed in flannel and such, looks like a lesbian.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES

She then tells him to stop, he complains that he isn't done, and she asks if he wants to "wank" and rub her "t*ts" (he says no, and we then see both standing in their underwear and shirts).

Aldous then says a threesome is possible, that they have all that's needed, and that's followed by the comment, "Let's get naked and start f*cking right here." Wanting to get even with Aaron for cheating on her, Daphne says they should do it, much to Aaron's shock, but Aldous tells him to think of it as having sex with his girlfriend while someone else has sex with his girlfriend. We then see Aaron trying to kiss her while Aldous performs oral sex on her under the covers (nothing seen). Aldous and Daphne are then ready to have sex, but Aaron suddenly kisses Aldous on the mouth and apparently grabs his penis, interrupting them and causing Aldous to tell him to unhand "the emperor." Both then try to punch the other, but their fists make contact. The two of them then throw things (glasses, dishes, etc.) at each other until Aldous' dad flings a serving tray into Sergio's face. Moments later, Sergio drags the dad down some steps, smashes a lava lamp over his head, and prepares to throw hot stones at him, but he burns his hand on the one he picks up. He then smashes Aldous' dad's head into a TV set (all played for comedy).
  • While high on drugs, Sergio chases after Aldous and Aaron who eventually flee in a car, with Sergio chasing after them but then suddenly being hit by a vehicle (he's okay and also played for comedy).
