QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: A high school student must contend with gossip -- some of it self-perpetuated -- about her sudden promiscuous reputation.
PLOT:
Olive Penderghast (EMMA STONE) is a 17-year-old high school student who believes she's invisible to most of her fellow students despite the support of her parents, Dill (STANLEY TUCCI) and Rosemary (PATRICIA CLARKSON), and English teacher Mr. Griffith (THOMAS HADEN CHURCH) who's teaching his class "The Scarlett Letter."

Her fortunes change when ultra-religious Marianne (AMANDA BYNES) overhears Olive tell a white lie to her best friend, Rhiannon (ALY MICHALKA), about losing her virginity. Olive only told her that to stop Rhiannon's constant nagging about Olive's weekend, but it doesn't take long for Marianne to tell her boyfriend, Micah (CAM GIGANDET), and others, with the scandalous tale quickly spreading to the entire student body.

While school mascot Todd (PENN BADGLEY) doesn't pay any heed to the gossip, Olive's newfound notoriety soon has her meeting both guidance counselor Mrs. Griffith (LISA KUDROW) and Principal Gibbons (MALCOLM McDOWELL), the latter of whom puts her into detention for some salty language. It's there that she meets Brandon (DAN BYRD) who wants to stop the torment of being a closeted gay student and thus asks Olive to lie that she slept with him to fool others into thinking he's straight.

She reluctantly does, but that faux encounter and the subsequent rumors that quickly spread soon have her in the spotlight of various students. Among them are other guys who similarly want to benefit from her reputation, while Marianne and her followers want her kicked out of school. Realizing she can't beat the gossip that turns into other rumors, Olive decides to play up the lifestyle of a floozy, including proudly wearing her own letter "A" on her clothed chest.

From that point on, and as her friendship with Rhiannon takes a turn for the worst, Olive must contend with that, many of the guys wanting their name and reputation associated with her, and other developments that come along with her self-perpetuating status.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
High school students might be drawn to the same-age characters and risqué sounding material, the latter of which might also entice younger and curious teens.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For mature thematic elements involving teen sexuality, language and some drug material.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • EMMA STONE plays a 17-year-old high school student who thinks she's invisible to the rest of the student body until she lies to Rhiannon about losing her virginity, resulting in Marianne overhearing that and then spreading the gossip. That then spirals out of control for Olive, especially when she reluctantly agrees to lie about sleeping with other guys to help their social lives, eventually resulting in Olive adopting the dress and attitude of a lose teen, despite her not being that and instead being an otherwise intelligent and witty girl. She uses profanity.
  • AMANDA BYNES plays her high school nemesis, the leader of a Christian group at school who's determined to drive Olive out of there. She ends up using some profanity while upset and is portrayed as the comic fool.
  • ALY MICHALKA plays Olive's best friend when the story starts, a girl who's more "out there" than Olive and who dresses and speaks provocatively. But when Olive's rumored sexuality overtakes her own, Rhiannon turns against Olive and eventually joins forces with Marianne. She uses profanity.
  • CAM GIGANDET plays Marianne's boyfriend who's also in the group but who hasn't lived up to such high ideals, especially when it comes to sex.
  • LISA KUDROW plays the school's guidance counselor who's harboring her own sexual secret and wants Olive to keep it.
  • PENN BADGLEY plays a nice boy at school who serves as the mascot, works in a restaurant, and is one of the few people who doesn't care about the rumors spreading about Olive who he's known for years.
  • STANLEY TUCCI plays Olive's supportive and witty father who gives her a lot of leeway in how she behaves.
  • PATRICIA CLARKSON plays his wife who has the same parenting style and admits to being quite promiscuous in her own high school past.
  • THOMAS HADEN CHURCH plays Olive's laidback and cool English teacher who easily connects with his students and tries to keep all of them out of trouble.
  • DAN BYRD plays Olive's classmate, a gay student who wants to take advantage of her rumored promiscuity to concoct a lie that she slept with him, all so that others will believe he's straight and thus stop tormenting him. Accordingly, he fakes having sex with her (in a locked room, making exaggerated noises, etc.) to set-up that lie.

  • Olive finally decides to lie to Rhiannon that she did lose her virginity, and then comments that Rhiannon having a guy "motorboat" her behind a store doesn't make her a "super slut." Having overhead this from a bathroom stall, Marianne then says that the two girls are self-admitted whores.

For the final climatic sound out of him, she then punches him hard in the gut and then puts her panties in his pocket as he walks out.
