PLOT: Nina Sayers (NATALIE PORTMAN) is a dedicated ballerina in a ballet company located in New York City where she lives with her mom, Erica (BARBARA HERSHEY), a former dancer and obsessive stage mother. The ballet company is run by artistic director Thomas Leroy (VINCENT CASSEL) who's decided it's time to retire his lead ballerina, Beth Macintyre (WINONA RYDER), and replace her with someone younger to star in their new season's debut of Swan Lake. He knows Nina can effortlessly play the White Swan character, but he's looking for someone who can play both her and the Black Swan character, which are quite different parts. He sees more of the latter in a new dancer, Lily (MILA KUNIS), who's a carefree and sensual spirit compared with Nina who lives by both her own and her mother's rigid rules. With Nina trying to nail both sides of the dual performance, she begins to change and fit into the role, but at the risk of losing her sanity. WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT? Those who are fans of anyone in the cast, films by Darren Aronofsky or ballet could be interested - otherwise, it doesn't seem likely. WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R For strong sexual content, disturbing violent images, language and some drug use. CAST AS ROLE MODELS: NATALIE PORTMAN plays a dedicated ballerina who so wants to be perfect in both roles of a new version of Swan Lake that she crosses over the line of occasional insanity and hallucinations. She lives with her mom but ends up feeling suffocated by her smothering and controlling behavior, and may or may not (based on whether what we see is real or imagined) have a sexual fling with Lily after a night of drinking (and possible drug use). She uses some strong profanity, briefly smokes, and lacks confidence despite her skill and desire for perfection, something that holds her back from being brilliant. MILA KUNIS plays the new dancer in the ballet company who positions herself as both Nina's friend and rival. She's a carefree spirit and something of a wild child who wants Nina to loosen up. Based on whether what we see is real or not, she may have a sexual fling with Nina after drinking with her, and another possible fling with Thomas, while she also uses some drugs. She also uses profanity and briefly smokes. VINCENT CASSEL plays the ballet company's artistic director who's staging a new and stripped down version of Swan Lake, and wants a single ballerina to play both the White and Black Swan characters. Despite his doubts, he chooses Nina and then pushes her to loosen up for the Black Swan part, which includes some sexual behavior directed at her. He uses strong profanity, and drinks some. BARBARA HERSHEY plays Nina's mother, a former dancer who lives with her, but is mega controlling and smothering in her behavior toward her daughter. WINONA RYDER plays another ballerina who's ousted from the company by Thomas in favor of someone new and younger. She appears intoxicated in one scene and uses strong profanity. CAST, CREW, & TECHNICAL INFO HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit? Then read OUR TAKE of this film. OUR WORD TO PARENTS: Here's a brief summary of the content found in this drama/thriller that's rated R, and where some content turns out to be imagined rather than real. Profanity consists of at least 16 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue (some of it explicit) is present, as is a lesbian sexual encounter, some heterosexual fooling around, some female masturbation, and women seen in revealing attire. Violence includes what initially appears to be manslaughter, another apparent death, several scenes of self-mutilation, and some struggling and the injuring of others. Some of that, as well as various hallucinations and other scenes have bloody results, and that material, other moments, and various visuals might be unsettling, suspenseful and/or scary to some viewers. Some behavior might be enticing for kids to imitate. There's drug use (pills) and drinking, and brief smoking in one scene. Bad attitudes are present, as is tense family material and thematic elements. For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there are full strobe effects in a club on the dance floor. For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there's a great deal of bouncy camera movement throughout the film, as well as spin-around camera shots. ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE Some of the following is potentially hallucinatory in nature, but appears real to some degree as it occurs (or begins to). People have champagne at a reception, including Thomas, Nina and Beth. A toast is raised, and everyone drinks. Thomas tells Nina she should stop by his place for drinks following the above reception. She does, and they both have champagne by them. An intoxicated Beth confronts Nina about why Thomas chose her (Nina) for the performance. Lily asks Nina if she wants to go out for a drink. Lily pulls out some drugs (in pill form) from her cigarette case, saying one's for her and the other for Nina. She adds that it's pure and will loosen her up. Nina declines and excuses herself, and when she returns Lily is having drinks with two men, and she dumps the open contents of one of those pills (or some cocaine or similar) into one of the drinks. They and the two men then drink, with Lily saying it's time for another round. Later, Nina is reacting to the drug and seems loopy, with Lily joking, "Looks like someone is rolling." They then dance with the guys in the club, with both fooling around with men. Even later, Lily comes on to Nina in that state, first in a cab and then back in her bedroom (where Erica is upset upon her daughter's return and says, "You've been drinking"). Later, Nina realizes Lily put something into her drink and comments on that. BLOOD/GORE Some of the following is potentially hallucinatory in nature, but appears real to some degree as it occurs (or begins to). We see Nina's feet in a bathroom stall and hear a splash, followed by the flushing of the toilet (suggesting she may have thrown up). Nina spins on her toes and feels pain. She then removes her ballet slipper to reveal a broken and bloody toenail. We see some small scars on Nina's upper back. We see a little blood on Nina's upper back from the earlier scar area, and she washes that off. Nina spots a little blood around her fingernail. She later sees the same and then starts messing with that area, eventually pulling back a long strip of skin on her finger (with bloody results, but this is all just imagined). Lily tells Nina to hurry up in the bathroom as she's about to burst. We see a rash and scratch marks on Nina's upper back. There's talk that Beth walked out into a street and was hit by a car, with Thomas saying he thinks it was purposeful. Nina later goes to visit Beth in the hospital. She's asleep/unconscious/sedated, with some bruises on her face. Nina then slowly lifts up the sheet, first revealing a rod pinned into part of her leg, and then a nasty looking, sewn-up incision on another part of her leg (seen in close-up). Thomas tells Nina that she's stiff like a corpse. We see Nina in the bathtub, and see her hand go down her belly toward her crotch (which we don't see). She then apparently masturbates there, and then drops herself down under the water. But the sexual part of that stops when some drops of blood land in the water from somewhere above. We then see Nina's underwater view looking up where she suddenly sees another version of herself, which scares her. She then bolts upright and no one is there, but there's some blood on the inside tub wall. Nina then ends up clipping her nail, with very bloody results. While climaxing from oral sex, weird patterns show up and flow along parts of Nina's skin. Nina nearly vomits into a toilet, retching once over it. Beth repeatedly stabs herself in the cheeks with a letter opener (or the equivalent), with bloody results. Nina tries to stop her and they struggle, but Beth gets control of the opener and continues jabbing that into and through her flesh. Nina then runs off, but realizes she has blood on her hands and the opener that she drops. Nina turns on the light and there's a figure in the corner of the kitchen with blood on their clothes. She then sees that figure again. Nina vomits into a toilet (seen in full). Nina hears her back or something else crack, and she then spots what looks like a tiny feather sprouting from her back. She then slowly pulls that out (seen in close-up, with bloody results). Nina pulls some of her toes apart that seem stuck together via the skin. She then sees her other foot where the toes are webbed and/or have grown together. Lily suddenly turns into a second version of Nina, with the real Nina bashing her back against a dressing room mirror, shattering it. The real Nina then gets on top of the second who starts to strangle the first (stretching her neck out in an exaggerated fashion), with the first then grabbing a mirror shard and stabbing it into the second. We see blood there and then out of Lily's mouth (having turned back into her). Nina then drags Lily's dead body to another part of the room. Having gone mad, Nina's eyes (the white section) have gone completely red. Nina sees a pool of blood coming from under a dressing room door (from the above), and she puts a towel there. Later, she pulls the towel away and there's no blood or body in that room. Nina pulls a shard of glass from her own costume (we see blood at that point and on the shard). SPOILER ALERT: We see a spot of blood soaked in the front of Nina's costume (from where a shard of glass had earlier impaled her), and that grows. It's then suggested that she dies from that wound. DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE Some of the following is potentially hallucinatory in nature, but appears real to some degree as it occurs (or begins to). Erica smothers and controls Nina's life (getting worse as the story progresses). Some dancers gossip and joke about Beth being an old dancer. Nina goes into Beth's dressing room and steals some lipstick. We later see her return that and other items she also stole. We're never certain whether Thomas is trying to push/persuade/show Nina how to loosen up for the Black Swan part, or if he's trying to seduce her, or some combination of both. Thinking another dancer got the big part, Nina congratulates her. When the opposite is true, that dancer returns to Nina and wonders why she's so cruel, adding, "F*ck you." Nina comes out of the bathroom stall to see the word "Whore" written on the mirror. An intoxicated Beth confronts Nina about why Thomas chose her (Nina) for the performance. She states that he said Nina was a such a frigid little girl and asks what she did to change his mind. She then asks, "Did you suck his c*ck?" with Nina replying, "Not all of us have to." Beth then yells out at her, "You f*cking whore!" Lily smokes in the dance studio despite Nina telling her that's not allowed (but Nina then joins her in doing that). Lily may or may not be messing with Nina's head in order to steal the lead role away from her. Another dancer mocks Nina. Nina learns that Lily told Thomas that he was pushing Nina too hard. Nina sees an old man on a subway leering at her. He then blows kisses, licks his lips, and then starts rapidly rubbing his clothed crotch. Erica tells Nina she doesn't want her to make the same mistakes she did with her career. Nina sarcastically replies, "What career?" with Erica saying the one she gave up to raise Nina. Lily jokes that two men she's met in a bar are gay lovers, but when one says he's never been to the ballet, she says he's definitely not gay. Nina walks down a dimly lit construction tunnel, and sees a figure off in the distance that comes her way. It briefly looks like Nina herself, but then turns into someone else as the woman passes by. We see Nina in the bathtub, and see her hand go down her belly toward her crotch (which we don't see). She then apparently masturbates there, and then drops herself down under the water. But the sexual part of that stops when some drops of blood land in the water from somewhere above. Erica tells Nina to take off her shirt, and Nina shouts back, "No!" Erica is upset that Nina was out partying with Lily. When Nina says about two guys they met, "I f*cked them both," Erica tells her to shut her mouth and slaps her hand across Nina's mouth, hard. Nina angrily announces to her mom that she's moving out. Nina struggles with her mom at her bedroom door, eventually pushing her back out and twice slamming the door on her mom's hand. Nina imagines her mom's artwork (paintings) come to life, moving and making noises, prompting Nina to tear some of them from the wall. Nina struggles with her mom at her bedroom door, eventually pushing her back out and twice slamming the door on her mom's hand. Nina's legs then break in an exaggerated, grotesque fashion and she falls and hits her head on her bed frame, knocking herself out. When she comes to, she finds her mom has locked her in the bedroom with her (with the door knob missing). She then squeezes her mom's hurt hand so that she can find the knob and leave. A male dancer accidentally drops Nina to the stage floor and she lands with a thud. Lily suddenly turns into a second version of Nina, with the real Nina bashing her back against a dressing room mirror, shattering it. The real Nina then gets on top of the second who starts to strangle the first (stretching her neck out in an exaggerated fashion), with the first then grabbing a mirror shard and stabbing it into the second. We see blood there and then out of Lily's mouth (having turned back into her). Nina then drags Lily's dead body to another part of the room. SPOILER ALERT: We see a spot of blood soaked in the front of Nina's costume (from where a shard of glass had earlier impaled her), and that grows. It's then suggested that she dies from that wound.
