QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: A bumbling French police inspector leads a team of detectives assembled from around the world to catch a notorious thief of rare and precious items, including the famed Pink Panther diamond.
PLOT:
Despite having previously managed to save the famed Pink Panther diamond, bumbling French police inspector Jacques Clouseau (STEVE MARTIN) is now doing traffic meter duty, assigned by his superior, Chief Inspector Dreyfus (JOHN CLEESE), who realizes Clouseau is a boob who lucked out in solving that famous case. His personal assistant, Ponton (JEAN RENO), and secretary, Nicole (EMILY MORTIMER), however, look up to the inspector, although her admiration is also romantically tinged.

Accordingly, they aren't surprised when Clouseau is chosen by the French government to lead a "dream team" of worldly detectives -- including Vicenzo (ANDY GARCIA), Pepperidge (ALFRED MOLINA), Kenji (YUKI MATSUZAKI) as well as diamond expert Sonia (AISHWARYA RAI BACHCHAN) -- assembled to find and stop a notorious thief, The Tornado, who's stealing some of the world's rarest and most precious items. Not only has the criminal stolen the Magna Carta, the Shroud of Turin and Japan's Imperial Sword, but he's now just nabbed the Pink Panther.

While political correctness liaison Mrs. Berenger (LILY TOMLIN) tries to teach Clouseau how to act around the opposite sex and in terms of ethnic sensitivity, he must deal with Vicenzo putting the moves on Nicole while Sonia does the same to Clouseau. That's all while the team of detectives searches for criminal Milliken (JOHNNY HALLYDAY) while investigating his ultra-wealthy fence, Avellaneda (JEREMY IRONS), in the belief that they might know something about the crimes.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they liked the first film, they probably will.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG
For some suggestive humor, brief mild language and action.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • STEVE MARTIN plays a bumbling French police inspector who's oblivious to the fact that he's not as smart or skilled at police work as he believes himself to be. Moved from parking enforcer to leader of an elite group of detectives, he strives to discover the identity of The Tornado, but bumbles and stumbles his way through doing so. At the same time, he tries to keep his love for Nicole secret (in public), but that opens the door for Vicenzo to step in as a potential rival.
  • JEAN RENO plays his faithful sidekick who's more proficient in such work, but always takes a back seat to his mentor. He must also contend with his (barely seen) wife who kicks him and their boys out of the house over a disagreement regarding his long work hours.
  • EMILY MORTIMER plays Clouseau's mousy secretary with whom he's smitten and vice-versa, although situations make her believe his feelings have changed, thus disappointing her and allowing Vicenzo to make his move on her.
  • ANDY GARCIA plays a famed Italian detective called upon to help solve the high profile robberies. He can't believe that Clouseau is the leader of that effort or that Nicole is interested in the bumbling cop, so he tries to sweep her off her feet.
  • ALFRED MOLINA plays a British detective also assigned to the case and he clashes with Clouseau.
  • YUKI MATSUZAKI plays a Japanese tech wizard who's also working with them.
  • AISHWARYA RAI BACHCHAN plays an alluring and sexy diamond expert also assigned to the case whose apparent attraction to Clouseau simply masks her ulterior motives.
  • JOHN CLEESE plays Clouseau's boss who can't believe his subordinate has been assigned to the case rather than him. He appears to be cheating on his wife in one scene.
  • LILY TOMLIN plays a social and political correctness officer assigned to make sure Clouseau doesn't offend anyone. Some of her work involves verbally tempting the police inspector with a sultry-sounding story.
  • JEREMY IRONS plays a wealthy fence who proclaims his innocence of being the recent thief, although he's been in cahoots with The Tornado in the past.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
Here's a brief summary of the content found in this PG-rated comedy. Profanity consists of a minor expletive, while some religious and colorful phrases are also uttered. Some sexually related dialogue (including related comments taken out of context and innuendo) is present, as are varying amounts of cleavage, and a famous painting shows male full frontal nudity (albeit not in an extremely graphic fashion).

Violence consists of some shooting at others with the intent to injure or kill (although it's mostly played fairly lightly rather than as graphic realism), there's a great deal of slapstick material, and there's some literal cartoon violence in the opening credits. It's possible some of that could be a little unsettling and/or suspenseful for some younger viewers, but likely few others. All sorts of behavior might be enticing for kids to imitate (since it's designed to elicit laughs), while people have drinks and alcohol is present in several scenes.

The thief has a bad attitude, while some politically incorrect humor is also present, as is some brief tense family material.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there's some of that from camera flashes at a reception.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • We see a flashback to Clouseau selecting a bottle of wine for Nicole and himself in a restaurant. He accidentally bumps the wine stand wall, causing various bottles to fall toward the floor, with him catching, juggling and throwing those bottles to others to prevent any of them from breaking.
  • Upon seeing Clouseau's threat to catch The Tornado, some just-poured champagne is thrown against the TV displaying that threat.
  • Clouseau holds a glass of what looks like wine on a plane.
  • Avellaneda has wine with a woman in a restaurant.
  • When Mrs. Berenger shows Clouseau various Rorschach inkblots and asks what he sees, he states "drunken Irishmen" for one.
  • Vicenzo carries champagne at a reception, while Nicole holds what might be an alcoholic drink that she later brings to Clouseau outside, but there's no consumption. Back inside, we then see champagne in glasses on a table around which the Dream Team and Nicole sit, but there's no consumption.
  • Dreyfus opens some champagne.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • Sonia comments on The Tornado being shot in the past and his blood being collected for DNA purposes (none of which is seen).
  • We see an old bullet hole scar in the back of The Tornado's shoulder.
  • We see a dead man on the floor (no blood), supposedly a suicide victim, but we later learn he was murdered.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • We hear that the Tornado has stolen the Magna Carta, the Shroud of Turin and the Imperial Sword, and then does the same to the Pink Panther diamond.
  • A driver won't take a parking ticket from Clouseau, turning on the wipers to prevent the application of the ticket, and then spraying washer fluid into Clouseau's face, etc.
  • Despite knowing Clouseau is involved with Nicole, Vicenzo puts the moves on her.
  • About what Kenji (who's Japanese) wants to eat, Clouseau says he supposes it's sushi, adding, "My little yellow friend." Mrs. Berenger reprimands him on that, asking if he's prejudiced. He says no, except when they (Asians) drive, barely seeing over the steering wheel (that he acts out), and then makes a comment about "dumb blondes."
  • Avellaneda is pointed out as The Tornado's fence.
  • The thief steals a priceless ring from the Pope's hand while he sleeps.
  • Although obviously played for goofy comedy and the Pope is never portrayed in anything but a serious light, some viewers might take offense at comedy stemming from Clouseau questioning the Pope about a stolen ring, and then dressing like the Pope, and eventually falling and dangling from a balcony overlooking Vatican Square, etc.
  • When Mrs. Berenger shows Clouseau various Rorschach inkblots and asks what he sees, he states "drunken Irishmen" for one and "San Francisco Nancy boy" for another.
  • Dreyfus shows up at a reception with a cleavage-revealing date, telling the man at the door to let him know when his wife arrives (meaning he's cheating on her).
  • The villain tries to shoot and kill Clouseau and others.
  • Dreyfus tries to take credit for Clouseau's success in solving the case.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES

  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Handguns/Machine guns/Nunchuckas Carried and/or used to threaten, fight or attempt to wound or kill others. See "Violence" for details.
  • During the cartoon opening credits, the Pink Panther (the feline) puts a cartoon bomb down the back of Clouseau's pants, and it blows up in a cartoon explosion.
  • Various guards carry machine guns in several scenes.
  • Ceremonial guards in the Vatican hold ceremonial spears.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "Ham-bur-gur," "A hot sexy brother in a dress," "(French) Idiot," "I'm sorry you can't satisfy your wife," "She's here to service your needs. Feel free to use her however you wish," "Let me bring you up to speed. We know nothing. Now you are up to speed," "When I am thinking 'Wolf!'" "My little yellow friend," "You are crazy," "Bare-bummed idiot," "I'd look like a complete ass, wouldn't I?" "Die, little piglets," "Most small-minded nitwit I have ever encountered," "Jojoba," "Are you insane?" "You moron," "You sad excuse for a human being," "Not even a little smoochie-woochie?" and "No man is an iz-land."
  • Some kids may be enticed to imitate all or part of Steve Martin's performance as Clouseau, including but not limited to his exaggerated French accent, his bumbling ways, and other physical stunts, etc.
  • Hearing that Clouseau has been chosen to head up the "dream team," Dreyfus goes off to the bathroom where he repeatedly bangs his own head against the wall and sink top in frustration.
  • Clouseau wildly gesticulates while driving, thus taking his hands and eyes off the steering wheel, resulting in various close calls in city traffic (played for comedy).
  • Clouseau goofs up the names of Vicenzo, Pepperidge and Kenji upon first hearing them (done in an exaggerated fashion).
  • Vicenzo taps Nicole on her clothed butt as she gets onto his plane.
  • Clouseau does all sorts of tapping and stopping while dressed and pretending to be a flamenco dancer. He also stands and stomps down on a table, and runs from table top to table top.
  • While dressed like the Pope and reenacting past behavior, Clouseau accidentally falls over a balcony overlooking Vatican Square. He dangles from that as well as a flag/banner, falls from that and lands and hangs onto a flagpole before falling from that.
  • Ponton's boys enthusiastically tackle Clouseau and then want to battle him, martial arts style. One breaks a floor lamp to use part of that as a pole that he hits Clouseau with, while the other comes at Clouseau with nunchuckas (that Clouseau also holds, but there's no contact by either party with those). This battle continues, however, causing property damage. The kids then pull a floor rug out from beneath Clouseau, sending him falling, and then double-kick him back against a door that collapses out into the hallway. We next see Clouseau holding both boys by their feet off a balcony, but he doesn't drop them.

  • Describing Nicole but trying to hide their secret love for one another, Clouseau refers to Nicole as being someone like his brother, adding, "A hot sexy brother in a dress."
  • Referring to a fire he accidentally caused in a restaurant, Clouseau says (about him and Nicole, his date then) that causing that fire ignited more illicit fires within them.
  • Ponton states that his wife has complained about his working too long. Not meant the way it ultimately sounds in public, Clouseau yells out to him in an airport, "I'm sorry you can't satisfy your wife."
  • Said to Nicole about meeting the other detectives, Clouseau states, "Enough of this foreplay." When he introduces Nicole to them, Clouseau states (not meant sexually), "She's here to service your needs. Feel free to use her however you wish."
  • Sonia is introduced with sultry saxophone music playing on the soundtrack, and shows varying amounts of cleavage in various outfits throughout the film.
  • Mrs. Berenger gives Clouseau a test to see if he can remain politically correct while she tells him a sexy-sounding story. During this, she comments on a made-up woman with a tight blouse, bursting with her "soft, white mounds" and the related cleavage when she bends over. She also goes on about the buttocks nearly being exposed just short of the nooks and crannies. We then see Clouseau sprawled out in his chair (his clothed pelvis slightly elevated), with a goofy and dreamy grin on his face as he stares at Mrs. Berenger (who's fully dressed in a non-provocative way).
  • Despite knowing Clouseau is involved with Nicole, Vicenzo puts the moves on her. He then tries to get Clouseau interested in Sonia, saying the latter is into having babies all day long.

  • The Dream Team does various bits of made-up, playful gossip about how Sonia could be related to The Tornado, including her being his daughter, while another says his lover.
  • Vicenzo tells Clouseau that nothing happened between him and Nicole, with Clouseau asking, "Not even a little smoochie-woochie?"
  • SMOKING
  • None.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • Ponton states that his wife has complained about his working too long. Later, he, his boys and their dog move in with Clouseau after the wife has kicked Ponton out.
  • Avellaneda briefly mentions having an ex-wife.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Clouseau's bumbling ways.
  • Clouseau's political incorrectness.
  • How police go about trying to solve thefts and such.
  • VIOLENCE
  • Most of the following is played for comedy and/or action rather than graphic realism.
  • Hearing that Clouseau has been chosen to head up the "dream team," Dreyfus goes off to the bathroom where he repeatedly bangs his own head against the wall and sink top in frustration.
  • A driver won't take a parking ticket from Clouseau, turning on the wipers to prevent the application of the ticket, and then spraying washer fluid into Clouseau's face. He then closes his window on Clouseau's hand and drives off, with Clouseau running alongside the car. During this, the inspector has to avoid a parked truck and thus runs his feet up along its side, accidentally kicking the face of someone inside it. The car driver then stops, sending Clouseau flying across the city (we don't see the impact -- played for extreme exaggeration on the latter part).
  • During the cartoon opening credits, the Pink Panther (the feline) hits the cartoon version of Clouseau, while the country of Italy kicks Clouseau. The Pink Panther then drops a statue and its pedestal base on Clouseau, while Clouseau also falls a long way and hits the street hard. The Pink Panther then hits Clouseau with a fish, and then drives over him. He then puts a cartoon bomb down the back of his pants, and it blows up in a cartoon explosion.
  • Discovering purposefully placed cameras and recording devices in Dreyfus' office, Clouseau (who's unaware of their official purpose) quickly breaks all of them. As a result, various commandos (armed with machine guns) swing in and blast through the windows, aiming their guns at everyone until Clouseau says the stop command.
  • In a flashback, Clouseau trips on something, sending a bottle of wine onto a flaming dish that then flares up and catches the restaurant on fire, burning the place down.
  • Clouseau opens his car door, accidentally hitting a bent over man on his butt.
  • Sonia comments on The Tornado being shot in the past and his blood being collected for DNA purposes (none of which is seen).
  • Upon seeing Clouseau's threat to catch The Tornado, some just-poured champagne is thrown against the TV displaying that threat.
  • To show Ponton's sons his surprise karate moves, Clouseau tries to hit a sleeping Ponton who quickly flips him crashing down onto a coffee table.
  • Clouseau falls (seen on a surveillance camera feed) but we don't see the impact below. We then see a number of horses run over him when he opens a stable door. Later, he ends up running in place atop a large, spinning globe, grabs and hangs from a chandelier, and then falls down onto a table, breaking it. Moments later, he falls down a chimney and hits the base in the fireplace hard, causing it to collapse down to the next one on the floor below it, and so on for several floors.
  • We see some restaurant bouncers throw Clouseau out and onto the street.
  • A male flamenco dancer is yanked aside and we hear the sound of a punch, followed by Clouseau taking his place.
  • Clouseau accidentally knocks a flaming dish aside in a restaurant, causing a fire to spread, resulting in property damage.
  • We see a dead man on the floor (no blood), supposedly a suicide victim, but we later learn he was murdered.
  • The villain holds a gun on Nicole and then shoots Clouseau after he says he should be the target. He's downed, but we see that the medal he was wearing blocked the bullet from his body. However, we then hear that it ricocheted into a waiter, killing him (we see the slumped body against a wall, but there's no blood). The villain then shoots at Clouseau again, with him accidentally backhanding someone who then knocks down others as a result. Another shot is fired at Clouseau and then at Vicenzo who blocks that with a tray. During this, Clouseau is accidentally shocked by his own actions, while the villain pours some sort of flammable liquid and then ignites that with a shot from a gun, causing a fire. Clouseau tries to put that out with a fire hose, but loses control of it and sprays other people before going off a balcony holding onto the hose (he lands safely). As he continues to pursue the villain, Vicenzo, Pepperidge and Kenji end up tumbling down some steps. The villain then throws a large diamond into the air and shoots it with a handgun, pulverizing the stone. Ponton then knocks out the villain with a tray to the face.
  • Armed guards burst into a room and grab various people, including Dreyfus whose head they twice shove down hard to a table.
