QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: A shopping mall security guard becomes progressively unhinged as he pursues both a pretty employee and the middle-aged flasher who's terrorizing her and others.
PLOT:
Ronnie Barnhardt (SETH ROGEN) takes his job -- as head of security at Forest Ridge Mall -- quite seriously. With underling security guards Dennis (MICHAEL PENA), John Yuen (JOHN YUAN), Matt Yuen (MATTHEW YUAN) and aspiring guard Charles (JESSE PLEMONS) following his every word and command, he thinks he's the big kahuna, a view that would be shared by his Mom (CELIA WESTON) if she wasn't always drunkenly blunt.

While his boss, Mark (DAN BAKKEDAHL), puts up with most of his behavior, and coffee shop employee Nell (COLLETTE WOLFE) takes a liking to him as he's the only one who doesn't make fun of the cast on her leg, others are less accepting. That includes store employee Saddamn (AZIZ ANSARI) who thinks Ronnie profiles him, while cosmetics counter employee Brandi (ANNA FARIS) is creeped out by the guard's not-so-subtle and somewhat stalker-like come-ons to her.

Then again, that's better than what she receives from a Flasher (RANDY GAMBRILL) who's been exposing his middle-aged and decidedly less than buff body to her and others at the mall. That doesn't sit well with Ronnie, nor does the fact that Det. Harrison (RAY LIOTTA) with the local Conway police is now working on that case.

Feeling that Harrison is invading his territory, Ronnie becomes progressively unhinged as he tries to prove his worth to the cop, Brandi and everyone else by catching the serial flasher.

HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
Here's a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated comedy. Profanity consists of at least 131 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue and song lyrics are present, as are several partially seen sexual encounters, while a middle-aged, male flasher's full frontal nudity is viewed. Other nudity (bare breasts) and sexual content is present.

Violence consists of a graphic shooting, some hard-hitting fights, and other such physical contact. Some of that has a surprising amount of bloody results, and some of what occurs might be unsettling and/or suspenseful to viewers.

All sorts of bad attitudes are present, as is drug use (coke, pot and heroin) and drinking (including drunkenness and alcoholism), while that and other behavior might be enticing for kids to imitate. A little bit of tense family material is present, as are several instances of crude humor.

Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Ronnie's mom appears to be intoxicated (behavior, including slurring) and pours liquor from a bottle into an empty soda bottle. She later passes out and falls from her chair to the floor.
  • A kid asks Ronnie if he wants some crack (cocaine) when the latter finds the former on the street at night.
  • Ronnie's mom has some booze.
  • Some guys drop off Brandi back at her place, and she's intoxicated, telling Ronnie she has to pee before they go out. We next see them in a bar or restaurant where he has a beer in front of him, while she sucks down a drink via a straw. She then orders tequila shots and we later see a quick montage of her downing them (Ronnie has just one), while she also has another drink. When she spots Ronnie taking some of his prescription medication, she asks for one pill, commenting on not realizing he parties like that. He gives her the entire bottle and she then downs several pills. She later vomits from all of that, and then has drunken sex with him.
  • Dennis offers to teach Ronnie the ways of the dark side, and we then see a montage of drinking and drug use. That includes Dennis snorting coke several times, Ronnie smoking pot and drinking with the Yuens, and then Dennis shooting up heroin. We then see Ronnie carrying a flask, and when he finds out something disturbing about Dennis, he says they should just go get a beer. Dennis agrees, but that never happens.
  • Ronnie takes a prescription pill, with his mom then taking one of his as well.
  • After his mom says something, Ronnie asks what she's talking about, and she replies that she doesn't know as she's drunk. When he thinks she's going to give up drinking, she says she's switching to beer as "I can pound those all day and still keep my sh*t together."
  • Ronnie receives a postcard from Dennis, and we hear the latter's voice reading the writing, including him stating that where he's at the beer is cold.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • Some thugs threaten Ronnie who then hits them with a baton/rod, including one with a briefly seen, bad arm break where the skin rips, and he then kicks the leader in his bloody face.
  • Some guys drop off Brandi back at her place, and she's intoxicated, telling Ronnie she has to pee before they go out. Later, when they return after drinking, she vomits and says she needs a breath mint as her breath "tastes like sh*t." He states he accepts her, and plants a kiss on her (right after that vomiting). Moments later, while he's having sex with her, she appears to be passed out with vomit from her mouth and some on her pillow.
  • While intoxicated (above), Brandi states, "You can polish a turd, but it's still a piece of sh*t."
  • Ronnie tells a metaphorical story of cancer and puss spreading over a playground (meaning a threat).
  • As Dennis does heroin, we see a close-up view of a bloody backflow into the syringe.
  • Ronnie and Harrison are fairly bloody after getting in a brutal fight. We later see Ronnie with various cuts and scrapes on his face.
  • While chatting with Ronnie, his mom mentions the other night when she soiled her pants.
  • SPOILER ALERT: As the flasher races toward Brandi, Ronnie suddenly steps up and shoots the man in the chest, downing him (with very bloody results on him and a pool of blood on the floor, while Ronnie has some blood on him).
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • We see a miscellaneous person shoplift.
  • In several scenes, a flasher terrorizes mall patrons and employees by exposing his full frontal nudity while wearing just a trench coat.
  • Some guys break a "no skateboarding" rule (with one even spray-painting a sign indicating just that) at the mall.
  • Ronnie doesn't like Harrison infiltrating what he thinks is his territory in terms of investigating the mall flasher (and that includes Ronnie giving Harrison "the finger"). The two then have bad attitudes toward each other throughout the film.
  • An initially anonymous person steals from the mall at night.
  • Ronnie says a few Spanish words to a Hispanic man and despite not understanding the language or response, proclaims that man is the suspect (to Harrison).
  • Ronnie and Saddam don't like each other, particularly since Ronnie profiles him due to his ethnicity. That results in both exchanging the phrase "f*ck you" to each other repeatedly.
  • Harrison finally has enough of Ronnie and his ego, telling him, "You f*cking faggot" and "You're a f*cking retard."
  • After a kid offers to sell Ronnie drugs, that boy's father and other thugs threaten Ronnie, including holding a gun to his head.
  • Despite her obviously not liking him, Ronnie keeps hitting on Brandi, including putting his hand on her head, and later rubbing a rose on her face, both of which make her visibly uncomfortable, but he ignores that.
  • Nell's boss is mean to her, including about her having a cast on her leg. At one point, he and another of his employees laugh about her in her presence.
  • Harrison has another detective hide so that he can listen to Harrison inform Ronnie that he failed his psychological exam to be a cop. The other detective then comes out and says he thought it would be funny, but it's not, and leaves.
  • After hearing about Nell's boss being mean to her, Ronnie storms into the back of the store, grabs the man, slams him against an industrial oven several times, and threatens to murder him if he does it again.
  • Dennis offers to teach Ronnie the ways of the dark side, and we then see them aiming laser pointers at various parts of women's clothed bodies (breasts, butts, etc.) as they pass by. We then see Dennis pop up above and from behind a stall wall and take a photo of a bare-breasted woman as she changes clothes.
  • SPOILER ALERT: We learn that Dennis is the mall robber, and when Ronnie (who's been hanging out and partying with him) says he can't go along with that, Dennis twice hits him on the head with a stool, knocking him out.
  • About his behavior, Mark asks Ronnie, "Are you f*cking retarded?"
  • About Nell and her pledge to remain celibate until marriage, Ronnie proudly states that's one promise he intends on making her break.

In response, Harrison takes Ronnie to the worst neighborhood, says he can walk the beat, and then abandons him there. A kid then offers to sell Ronnie some crack, followed by that boy's father and other gang-bangers then harassing Ronnie, including the father holding his handgun on Ronnie. The latter, however, slyly pulls out a baton/rod and uses that to strike the various thugs. One manages to hit him, but he takes out all of them (including one with a briefly seen, bad arm break where the skin rips), ending with kicking the leader in his bloody face.
