PLOT: Peter Klaven (PAUL RUDD) is a realtor who tries to be cool when the moment calls for it, but usually fails miserably and awkwardly. Even so, he's managed to attract Zooey Rice (RASHIDA JONES) as his live-in girlfriend, and he's hoping to sell the home of actor Lou Ferrigno (LOU FERRIGNO) in order to raise enough money to develop some land and thus support himself and Zooey to whom he's just proposed. The only problem is that he doesn't promote himself like his more gregarious coworker, Tevin (ROB HUEBEL), and hasn't had any success so far. His unassuming ways haven't been lost on Zooey's sister, Hailey (SARAH BURNS), or best friend, Denise (JAIME PRESSLY), who can't help but point out that Peter doesn't have many male friends. Then again, Hailey isn't dating anyone, while Denise's husband, Barry (JON FAVREAU), is something of a jerk, especially toward Peter. In fact, Peter's best friend is probably his mom (JANE CURTIN), as his dad (J.K. SIMMONS) points out that their other son, gay physical trainer Robby (ANDY SAMBERG), is one of his two best friends. Realizing he needs a best man for the wedding, Peter sets out to make some new male friends, but doesn't have much luck as he tries too hard and isn't particularly adept at being cool or hip. Even so, he ends up striking a friendship with investor Sydney Fife (JASON SEGEL) who habitually crashes real estate open houses for the free food and a quest to hook up with divorcees. A straight-shooter, Sydney becomes best friends with Peter, but their growing friendship begins to put a strain on Peter's relationship with Zooey, particularly when it brings out another side of him that she's never seen before. From that point on, Peter must balance his relationships with both as his and Zooey's wedding date quickly approaches. WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT? If they're fans of anyone in the cast and/or male buddy comedies, they just might. WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R For pervasive language, including crude and sexual references. CAST AS ROLE MODELS: PAUL RUDD plays an unassuming real estate agent who realizes he doesn't have many male friends, and certainly none he could ask to be his best man in his wedding to Zooey, his live-in girlfriend. Accordingly, he sets out to find one, bumbling and stumbling his way through trying to act and sound cool and hip. He eventually meets and befriends Sydney and thus gets to cut loose with him, including jamming as a two-man garage band and drinking (including getting drunk). He uses strong profanity and fools around some with Zooey. JASON SEGEL plays an investor who crashes real estate open houses for the free food and to hook up with divorcees. A straight-shooter in terms of being yourself and telling the truth, he accepts Peter for who he is and becomes his best friend. He uses strong profanity, apparently has off-screen casual sex, drinks, and a has a bong in his garage where he can just be a regular guy with Peter. RASHIDA JONES plays Peter's live-in girlfriend and then fiancée who encourages him to find new male friends, but then isn't so sure about Sydney when he ends up taking up some of her time with Peter and gets him to act in ways she hadn't imagined. She uses some strong profanity. SARAH BURNS plays her sister who isn't involved with anyone at the moment, but brings up Peter's lack of male friends. She uses strong profanity and drinks some. JAIME PRESSLY plays their married friend who has the same reservations about Peter, and also uses strong profanity and drinks some. ROB HUEBEL plays Peter's more gregarious coworker who tries to move in on Peter's real estate deal with Lou Ferrigno. ANDY SAMBERG plays Peter's younger, gay brother, a physical fitness trainer who tries to give Peter advice about how to gain male friends. He uses some profanity. JON FAVREAU plays Denise's husband, prone to glowering over just about anything, especially when it has to do with Peter. He uses strong profanity, drinks and briefly smokes a cigar. LOU FERRIGNO plays himself, a muscle-bound actor who wants to sell his house and isn't happy about Peter's lack of success so far. He uses some profanity. J.K. SIMMONS and JANE CURTIN play Peter and Robby's parents who love their boys. He uses some profanity, and drinks some. OUR WORD TO PARENTS: Here's a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated comedy. Profanity consists of at least 54 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue (some of it explicit and covering a variety of topics) and material are present, including some that's gay related. There's a little bit of fooling around, while an ad shows a man's face next to a woman's butt in just a thong bottom. There's a little bit of comedy-based violence, drinking occurs in many scenes (with some resultant drunkenness), while there's a drug related comment, and a bong is seen but not used. Some smoking also occurs. Various instances of crude humor (including projectile vomiting) are present, as are various bad attitudes. Some behavior might be enticing for kids to imitate. Peter opens some champagne to celebrate him and Zooey getting engaged. Peter and his family have wine with dinner, while his dad has beer in front of him. Zooey, Hailey and Denise have wine. When Peter contemplates finding new male friends, there's a comment about casual lunch and after dinner drinks. Peter and others drink beer while playing poker. Miscellaneous people have wine in a restaurant. People drink while playing poker. Peter and another guy have wine. Peter, Barry and others chug beer, with Peter then projectile vomiting (a lot) onto Barry. Peter and Sydney have beer. Sydney comments about it taking a barrel of beer to get someone or some people drunk. Peter and Sydney drink, with Peter ending up drunk. After taking a taxi home, he announces to Zooey that he's drunk, with her jokingly asking if he threw up in Sydney's face, with Peter saying no. Sydney has a photo of a lizard or snake's head with a cigarette or joint in its mouth. Peter and Sydney have beer. We see a bong in Sydney's garage, but there's no use. One of Sydney's friends fondly remembers when they tripped on some acid. Peter has a beer while Sydney has a drink at a restaurant. We then see Hailey holding a drink, while Barry orders one for himself. Later, with dinner, we see wine on the table. Hailey, who shows some cleavage, holds a drink she identifies as "sex on the beach," jokingly telling Sydney that you never know and have to be prepared. Trying to imitate James Bond, Peter flubs that, asking for a margarita (instead of a martini). Peter tells a story that includes having wine with Zooey. We see Sydney with a drink in his hand during a montage of him calling his friends. Sydney has a beer. Tevin says he and Peter should get a burger and a beer (but that doesn't happen). Zooey and Hailey hold mimosas, with Hailey saying she's getting another one. BLOOD/GORE Denise comments on the phone that she feels like she's going to "puke" (but doesn't). In a phone conversation with Hailey and Denise, there's a comment about Zooey having her period. At work, Tevin comments on watching an online video of a grandmother riding a Sybian machine that he explains to Peter gives women intense orgasms. We don't see the video, but hear the woman's orgasmic sounds (when Peter sees the video, he nearly retches). Peter, Barry and others chug beer, with Peter then projectile vomiting (a lot) onto Barry. Spotting a couple in an Lou Ferrigno's open house, Sydney narrates to Peter about the guy needing to fart, having clenched (but clothed) butt cheeks, and then points out the moment when the guy does fart (slightly lifting his leg when the woman he's with is away). When the guy makes a comment about the house being too small, Sydney jokes, "Totally, and it smells like fart." Sydney states that sometimes he likes to go down to the boardwalk and throw his feces around like a gorilla. Peter and Sydney drink, with Peter ending up drunk. After taking a taxi home, he announces to Zooey that he's drunk, with her jokingly asking if he threw up in Sydney's face, with Peter saying no. Talking about his own advertising, Tevin asks Peter if he uses urinal cakes, with Peter saying, "When I pee." Tevin then says such advertising has worked for him and comments on potential clients who "pissed on my face." Sydney states his dog needs to "sh*t" and we then see it defecate on the sidewalk, but Sydney says he never cleans that up. A passerby then steps in that and confronts Sydney. We see dog excrement that Sydney's dog has left behind, with a passerby stepping in that. He's mad and states that he's going to make Sydney eat that, but Sydney runs off (due to the man being muscle-bound). Hailey hits a golf ball that accidentally strikes Sydney on the leg, leaving a bad bruise there. About the above urinal cake ads, Sydney says, "I pissed on his face." DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE Hailey, Denise and other women gossip about Peter not having any male friends, unaware that he can hear them. Barry doesn't like Peter and clearly doesn't want to allow him to join his poker game with his friends. There's some brief contact between fans in the stands at a soccer game, with one being belligerent toward an enthusiastic fan. Peter mockingly refers to a guy with a high-pitched voice as "Elmo" (but not to his face). Sydney states his dog needs to "sh*t" and we then see it defecate on the sidewalk, but Sydney says he never cleans that up. A passerby then steps in that and confronts Sydney who chases him away by acting aggressively crazy. Wanting Peter to practice his screaming, Sydney tells him (about his lame effort), "Gently remove your tampon" and try again. Sydney does a pre-wedding dinner toast, telling Zooey she should "give it back" and "return the favor" to Peter (referring to oral sex), adding that it will lead to a pleasurable union, while Barry jokes about Sydney referring to Zooey sucking Peter's "d*ck." Sydney refers to Denise as a "hot piece of ass." Sydney and Peter see Tevin having lunch with Lou Ferrigno, trying to get his real estate business. Sydney is mad about that and confronts Lou Ferrigno, eventually trying to punch him. Zooey gets mad at Peter for spending so much time with Sydney, prompting Peter to break off his friendship with Sydney. A guy loudly belches while passing directly in between Peter and Zooey who are talking. FRIGHTENING SCENES None. To mock Peter's fencing partner who's just lost, Sydney says, "Suck it, Gil" while grabbing his own clothed crotch in a mocking fashion. Zooey reports to her sister and Denise that she and Peter just got engaged, with one commenting on that being the place "where you f*cked for the first time." That's pointed out as being incorrect, there's a comment about that involving just oral and then something about a hot tub, as well as something about Zooey having her period. One then comments on the fact that Peter "goes down on" her six times a week and thus she needs to lock that tongue down. Peter and Robby's dad comments about them in the past, and that Robby wanted to "suck d*cks" due to being gay (with Robby playfully using the term "homo"), while the dad comments on one of them sexually maturing early, with several comments on his full "bush" at the age of 12. At work, Tevin comments on watching an online video of a grandmother riding a Sybian machine that he explains to Peter gives women intense orgasms. There's talk of another guy getting married soon, with jokes that he's a "dirty little slut" and that he'll finally be losing his virginity. That guy corrects that by saying he's "f*cked" his girlfriend already. When Denise is asked if she's nervous about Barry going to Vegas and cheating, she replies that he's 40 pounds overweight and has a small "d*ck," so no she's not worried. Robby states that he gets tired of pursuing just gay guys, proving that he can get straight guys interested in him. He then states that it's easy "hooking up" with other guys, but is harder finding friends. Barry tells Denise that if he allows Peter to join their poker game, they (Barry and Denise) will have sex with the lights on, like in Jamaica, all night long. Peter goes on a "man date" with another guy who makes a butt-slapping gesture and that of holding a waitress' breasts or buttocks, thus making Peter think he's straight. However, the guy then plants a deep kiss on Peter's mouth, taking him by surprise. Peter and Zooey make out in bed, under the covers, with him partially on top of her, but she asks if he's been kissing someone else, saying he tastes like an ashtray. Peter then fesses up that a guy did kiss him, and she asks him to brush him teeth, with Peter stating he did, and that the guy really got up in there (with his tongue). We then see that Peter and Zooey are in their bed clothes (thus no nudity). We see posters and photos of Lou Ferrigno shirtless and posing in just small, muscle-builder shorts. Spotting a couple in an Lou Ferrigno's open house, Sydney tells Peter the other guy is trying to impress the girl he hasn't slept with yet. When Sydney leaves, he states he's off in search of "cougars" (middle-aged divorcees). When Denise announces she's trying to get pregnant, Hailey says she's imagining Barry and Denise having sex, adding that he's so big and she's so small, and then makes a gesture of unlikely pieces fitting together. Referring to the guy earlier kissing Peter, Robby says Peter doesn't want another "tongue-f*cking." About Peter not taking long between dating various women, Sydney uses some slang term meaning Peter didn't have much lag time between vaginas. He then asks Peter how the sex with Zooey is, adding that guys think about it on a second to second basis, so talking about it is no big deal. Peter then says it's good, but Sydney doesn't believe him. Peter then confesses, "I wish she enjoyed..." with Sydney chiming in getting it "in the tush?" Peter says no, with Sydney then realizing he's referring to "putting it in her mouth," and there's related talk about that. With Peter seeing lotion and other related materials on a stand in Sydney's garage, Sydney admits, "This is where I jerk off." Peter asks about the condoms there, with Sydney saying he uses them all of time, as the lessened sensation means he can last longer, plus there's no sticky mess to clean up. Later, a woman calls Peter about the ads and states she loves the one with him in bed. Barry tells Denise she's going to have to dress up like a cheerleader tonight if he allows Peter to join their poker game. Zooey then has Peter leave with her, stating that Denise and Barry have very loud and intense make-up sex. Denise and Hailey show some cleavage in their bridesmaid dresses. SMOKING Barry smokes a cigar while playing poker (and we see his or another cigar in an ashtray in the same scene), while a minor character smokes a cigarette before unexpectedly French kissing Peter. Later, when Zooey kisses him, she asks if he's been kissing someone else, saying it tastes like an ashtray in there. She then asks him to brush him teeth, with Peter stating that guy really got up in there (with his tongue). Sydney has a photo of a lizard or snake's head with a cigarette or joint in its mouth. TENSE FAMILY SCENES Peter is surprised when his dad mentions that of his two best friends, Robby (Peter's younger brother) is one of them. Sydney falls backwards off his sofa while standing on it, but is unharmed. Hailey hits a golf ball that accidentally strikes Sydney on the leg, leaving a bad bruise there. Sydney and Peter see Tevin having lunch with Lou Ferrigno, trying to get his real estate business. Sydney is mad about that and confronts Lou Ferrigno, eventually trying to punch him. Lou Ferrigno easily catches his punch, puts him in a sleeper hold, and Sydney passes out. Peter slaps Tevin for trying to move in on his real estate listing.
