QUICK TAKE:
Romantic Comedy: Various people try to interpret signs and signals in their current and prospective relationships about where they stand in the hearts of minds of their significant others.
PLOT:
Gigi (GINNIFER GOODWIN) is a young woman who's so focused on finding and holding onto love that she obsesses about why men don't ever call her after their first date. Her latest neurotic-tinged obsession is with Conor (KEVIN CONNOLLY), a real estate agent who's best friends with voluptuous yoga instructor Anna (SCARLETT JOHANSSON) but wants something more from their relationship.

Conor and Gigi were set up by the latter's friend and coworker, Janine (JENNIFER CONNELLY), who's currently remodeling her home with husband Ben (BRADLEY COOPER) who she essentially pressured into marriage after dating since college. That's unlike their other friend and coworker, Beth (JENNIFER ANISTON), who can't get her boyfriend, Neil (BEN AFFLECK), to get married despite them dating for seven years and currently living together.

Newspaper ad sales rep Mary (DREW BARRYMORE) would consider herself lucky to get just that far, as she's perplexed by the array of ever-expanding technology one must check and update to see where they stand in the dating world. And then there's bar manager Alex (JUSTIN LONG) who's seemingly content just playing the field without looking for any sort of long-term relationship. When Gigi comes into his place searching for his friend Conor, Alex sets out to inform her about how and why men act the way they do, matters that still perplex the other women regardless of the seriousness of their relationships.

As Gigi and Mary continue to try to find new love in the dating pool, Conor tries to get Anna to commit to something more with him. And that's despite her now being interested in Ben who's torn between her and Janine, all while Beth eventually gives Neil an ultimatum regarding their relationship.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of anyone in the cast and/or romantic comedies, they just might be interested in it.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For sexual content and brief strong language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • GINNIFER GOODWIN plays a young woman so desperate for a relationship that she's become neurotic in her obsession about why her first dates don't ever call her again. She then latches onto Alex as her sage about relationships and men. She uses some profanity and drinks some.
  • JENNIFER ANISTON plays her friend and coworker who has a boyfriend in Neil, but is frustrated by his unwillingness to marry her despite their 7-year, live-in relationship. She uses profanity (some of it briefly strong) and must care for her father after he has a heart attack.
  • JENNIFER CONNELLY plays their other friend and coworker who's obsessed with dishonesty, particularly in regard to believing that her husband has started smoking again (stemming from her father dying from lung cancer). She uses profanity and must contend with her husband cheating on her.
  • SCARLETT JOHANSSON plays the voluptuous and sultry yoga instructor and aspiring singer who latches onto Ben, not only because he might be able to help her career, but also because she's sexually attracted to him. She ends up sleeping with him, and is noted as having had sex with Conor, now her best (male) friend.
  • KEVIN CONNOLLY plays that real estate agent who wants something more out of that relationship, including a return to them having sex. He also occasionally poses as being gay in hopes of getting additional real estate business, uses some profanity, and drinks some.
  • BRADLEY COOPER plays Janine's husband who finds himself tempted by Anna and eventually falls prey to that, having an affair with her. He must then decide what to do about that. He uses profanity and buys beer in several scenes.
  • JUSTIN LONG plays a bar manager and self-admitted bachelor who enjoys playing the field, but then finds himself drawn to Gigi after giving her advice about how most men view relationships and dating. He uses profanity and drinks some.
  • BEN AFFLECK plays Beth's long-time, live-in boyfriend who's fully committed to her, but doesn't believe in marriage and thus doesn't want to take that next step with her. He smokes once.
  • DREW BARRYMORE plays an ad sales rep for a gay newspaper who's perplexed by the dating world and how technology plays into and complicates that.

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this romantic comedy that's been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of at least 2 "f" words (one partially muffled), while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue is present (some of it gay related), as is some sexual activity (groping, undressing, making out, etc.), but no actual intercourse is seen (although it occurs off camera). Varying amounts of cleavage are present, and a woman skinny-dips in a pool (a man sees her full nudity, but we don't).

Bad attitudes are present, including a husband who has an affair, thus leading to tense family material. There's drinking as well as just alcohol present in many scenes, some crude humor is present, and a boy pushes a girl to the ground while an upset wife breaks a wall mirror.

Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there's some up and down and side to side movement on a boat.

He then kisses her belly and the scene ends there, but sex is implied.

  • Ben escorts Anna into his office, locks the door, and proceeds to passionately kiss her, and then grope her clothed butt in her dress with both hands, followed by turning her around and groping her clothed breasts. He then starts to undress her, down to her slip and then her cleavage-revealing bra and they start to get onto his desk, but a knock on the door by his wife interrupts them. Ben hurries Anna into the closet, tries to regain his composure, and then lets Janine in. She then comes on to him (not realizing what's just occurred), revealing cleavage in a camisole or something similar and then lifts up her skirt and straddles him on his office chair.
