QUICK TAKE:
Horror: As a young man looks for his missing sister, he must contend with a small group of partygoers who are unaware the cabin they're staying in is located in the same woods where a psychopath kills anyone who enters his environs.
PLOT:
Six weeks after his sister, Whitney (AMANDA RIGHETTI), went missing while hanging out with her friends near the long-abandoned Camp Crystal Lake campground, Clay Miller (JARED PADALECKI) is still searching for her. With no help from the local police, he's scouring the area with posters featuring his missing sibling, but gets little compassion from Trent (TRAVIS VAN WINKLE), a silver spoon jerk who's uptight about friends spending time with him and his girlfriend, Jenna (DANIELLE PANABAKER), at his father's cabin.

Little do they or their friends -- including Chewie (AARON YOO), Lawrence (ARLEN ESCARPETA), Bree (JULIANNA GUILL), Chelsea (WILLA FORD) and Nolan (RYAN HANSEN) -- realize that the woods are the home of Jason Voorhees (DEREK MEARS), a psychopath who reportedly killed everyone at the nearby camp decades ago and will do the same to anyone who enters his environs.

Determined to find his sister who -- unbeknownst to him -- is being held captive by Jason, Clay continues on his quest, accompanied by Jenna, but with no help from the others who -- one by one -- have deadly encounters with the masked serial killer.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're into slasher type horror movies (and especially the original set of "Friday the 13th" movies), they probably will.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For strong bloody violence, some graphic sexual content, language and drug material.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:

  • AMANDA RIGHETTI plays Clay's sister who survives Jason's earlier killing spree, only to become his chained hostage. She uses strong profanity.
  • DEREK MEARS plays the masked psychopath who kills everyone he can, save for Whitney who he kidnaps and imprisons.
  • TRAVIS VAN WINKLE plays Jenna's boyfriend, a silver spoon jerk who's mean to Clay, is concerned with everyone messing up his father's cabin, cheats on Jenna with Bree, and uses strong profanity.
  • AARON YOO plays one of their friends who brings along his bong, drinks to the point of intoxication, and uses strong profanity.
  • JULIANNA GUILL plays a young woman who ends up having sex with Trent and drinks.
  • ARLEN ESCARPETA plays another friend who drinks, smokes pot, and uses strong profanity.
  • RYAN HANSEN plays another in the group, a wild guy who clashes with Trent and doesn't follow his rules. He uses strong profanity.

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
Here's a quick look at the content found in this R-rated horror film. Profanity consists of at least 71 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue is present, as are several sexual encounters with related nudity, movement and sounds. Other such material as well as sexual and nonsexual nudity (bare breasts) also occurs.

Violence consists of people being murdered by various means, most of which result in very bloody and/or gory results. That material and various moments of potential peril might be unsettling, suspenseful and/or scary for viewers, while some of the scares and other material might be enticing for kids to imitate.

Bad attitudes are present, as is drinking and the use of pot (along the presence of marijuana plants), while characters drink in various scenes (and appear intoxicated and/or high).

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there's some of that as a broken light swings back and forth, while there's also some from lightning later in the film.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there are varying amounts of handheld camerawork (sometimes fairly bouncy) at various points of the film.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Whitney's friends are camping in the woods, looking for a crop of marijuana plants. One of them is then excited when he finds them, but he's killed before he can do anything with that discovery.
  • A group of young people have beer in the woods.
  • Whitney's boyfriend jokes that they'll get hammered and "blow some chunks" in the woods.
  • Chewie retrieves a bong from a case.
  • Various members of the group have beer cans around them, with Chewie opening one near his face, with the foam spraying on him there.
  • A pot farmer drinks from a bottle, asks Clay if he wants to buy some weed (Clay declines), and later lights up a joint.
  • Bree videotapes Chewie and Lawrence, narrating them as "stoned American male foraging for food."
  • Bree offers a beer to Clay, but Trent stops that.
  • About Trent losing a point in ping pong, Chewie and the others repeat "Shoot the boot," wanting Trent to drink liquor from Chewie's shoe. Trent refuses, so Chewie downs it from that.
  • Bree drinks from a bottle while doing some sexy dancing by herself and Chewie and Lawrence watch (both with drinks). She then shows Chewie how to drink a flaming drink, telling him you just "blow and suck," with him telling her she's good at that. Later, Chewie goes off to another building, finds expensive liquor, and twice drinks from the bottle.
  • Lawrence does a bong hit and then hides the bong and pot when he hears the sheriff is on his way (for something unrelated).
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • In a flashback prologue, a young woman beheads Jason's mom and we see the head hit the ground.
  • About the story of Jason, one person states that's how they get little kids to "sh*t themselves."
  • After one person talks of drinking "piss" and that it's sterile, one young woman says she's not drinking any of his.
  • Whitney's boyfriend jokes that they'll get hammered and "blow some chunks" in the woods.
  • We hear a guy urinating in the woods.
  • We hear Jason kill a young man, and later see the victim's bloody body.
  • We see a partially charred body on the ground.
  • A man's leg is bloody when a bear trap slams shut on it.
  • We see a severed head.
  • A blade blasts up through the floor, cutting Whitney's boyfriend on the leg. As he and she try to scramble to safety in a bathtub, more jabs of the blade come up through the floor, with some of them cutting him again on various parts of his body. Jason then yanks the boyfriend partly down through the floor where he stabs him. All of that has bloody results, including from the guy's mouth.
  • As Whitney tries to free a guy whose leg is stuck in a bear trap, Jason comes up behind her and slams a machete down through the guy's head (with bloody results).
  • Jason slices a man's neck, with lots of blood coming out.
  • An arrow goes through a man's head as he drives a boat that then heads toward the woman who was being pulled behind that and it runs into her in the water, injuring her. Both victims have bloody heads.
  • A young woman hides beneath a pier as Jason walks across the planks above her. Just then, his blade blasts down through the wood, impaling her in the head and lifting her halfway from the water (revealing her bare breasts), as blood runs down from her head.
  • We see a bloody neck stump on a decapitated but otherwise bagged body.
  • Jason pushes his next victim down and then thrashes him about. The victim tries to defend himself with a screwdriver, but Jason catches the young man's arm, turns around the screwdriver, and slowly pushes it up through the man's chin, with very bloody results.
  • Lawrence slowly walks through a large shed/out-building, looking for Chewie. He spots some blood on the floor and then on top of a freezer that he slowly opens, but it only reveals frozen food. Just then, a bloody body falls part-way from the ceiling, startling Lawrence, followed by Jason coming at him. He then stabs Jason in the leg (with bloody results) and runs out, only to have an ax thrown a long distance and into his back. Unable to move and with blood from his mouth, he lies there until Jason comes up, turns him over, and stomps down on him, driving the ax blade all of the way through Lawrence's chest, with bloody results.
  • Jason slams a rod of some sort through a sheriff's head and the door he's next to (with bloody results, including a view of the rod through the eye socket).
  • As the last person tries to climb through a hole in the wall, a blade suddenly comes through her body, killing her (with bloody results).
  • There's blood on a blade that Whitney has just used to stab Jason.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Jason obviously has a bad attitude for killing many people.
  • In telling a story about Jason, a young man states that the killer was "deformed" or "retarded."
  • Trent repeatedly acts like a jerk toward Clay.
  • Nolan takes out the boat despite Trent (the owner's son) telling him not to.
  • About Chewie holding ping pong balls, Trent sarcastically states that Chewie likes having "balls" in his hands.
  • Trent cheats on Jenna by having sex with Bree. And despite that, Trent accuses Jenna of being with Clay and "f*cking" all night (when that isn't true).
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence," "Blood/Gore" and "Jump Scenes" may be unsettling, suspenseful or scary to viewers, especially younger ones and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material.
  • Whitney and her boyfriend slowly walk through an old cabin and she gets unnerved by the old and odd things in there.
  • Clay and Jenna slowly make their way through an old cabin where the latter partly falls through the floorboards. Outside, they hear someone coming, and thus hide under a rack of canoes. Jason then drops a bagged body (the end is open, revealing a bloody neck stump), turns on the outdoor lights, and begins yanking the canoes aside, but Clay and Jenna have moved elsewhere to hide.
  • We see rats in a subterranean chamber where Whitney is held captive by chains.
  • Clay and Jenna slowly make their way through a tunnel, looking for a woman they heard screaming for their help. They then find Whitney and try to free her from her shackles, with Jenna seeing that Jason has entered the tunnel and is headed their way. They flee but run into a dead-end, followed by trying to scramble through a hole in the wall. After one is killed, a lantern hits the ground and the fire ignites and quickly spreads through the tunnel.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Machetes and other blades/Arrow/Handgun: Carried and/or used by Jason to wound and kill others. See "Violence" for details.

  • Chelsea wears a midriff-revealing top.
  • Nolan wears a t-shirt that reads "F*** Christmas."
  • Chelsea has a tattoo on her arm.
  • Lawrence uses a large frying pan as a shield as he goes to look for Chewie.

  • In a flashback prologue, Jason's mom pops out and scares a young woman.
  • Jason is suddenly by a guy in the woods.
  • Whitney's boyfriend sees what he thinks is a doll in a hole in the wall of an old cabin. He reaches in and pulls it out to reveal a severed head (that he drops, just as the door in the place suddenly closes).
  • A barking dog is suddenly at a screen door.
  • Jason suddenly comes at Whitney.
  • A bloody body partly falls from a ceiling, starting a person.
  • A young woman hears noises and slowly walks through the cabin, searching for its source. She slowly opens a shower curtain, finding nothing, but Jason is then behind her.
  • As Trent tries to start a car, a body suddenly falls from the sky and smashes into the windshield.
  • Jason suddenly grabs Clay through a window.
  • Jason suddenly bursts up through a pier and grabs Whitney.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • An extreme amount of suspenseful and ominous music plays in the film.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • A song had lyrics that we couldn't fully hear and/or understand, thus presenting the possibility of it potentially containing something objectionable. Another plays during a sex scene, but we didn't note anything objectionable (although it's possible some such content could be present in it).
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 71 "f" words (4 used sexually, as are the terms "getting any" and "laid," while 2 are used with "mother"), 37 "s" words, 2 slang terms using male genitals ("d*ck"), 2 using female ones ("p*ssy"), 2 for breasts ("t*ts"), 6 asses (1 used with "hole"), 3 damns, 1 crap, 1 hell, 14 uses of "Oh my God," 2 of "Jesus Christ" and 1 use each of "Christ," "G-damn," "Jesus" and "Oh God."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • A young woman shows cleavage.
  • A young man playfully tells a young woman, "You wanna slap that ass one more time for daddy?"
  • When Whitney's boyfriend states they're going off to make out, a friend jokes for the guy to make sure he wears a condom, adding that it be an extra small one. Later, that boyfriend playfully tells her, "C'mon, have sex with your boyfriend" (but they don't).
  • As one guy talks away while camping at night, his male friend looks over to the young woman with them (who's rubbing oil on her chest and cleavage, and then on her bare breasts) and mouths what appear to be the words, "I'm gonna f*ck you so hard."
  • A young man has rear entry sex with a young woman. We see movement and her bare breasts (in person as well as in silhouette from outside the tent), while hearing sexual sounds as well as sexual dialogue including talk of "wait for me" (referring to orgasm), but sounds outside the tent make her stop. He yells out to who he thinks is their friend, saying that if he's out there "whacking off," that's not cool but then adds, "F*ck it, let the perv watch." The woman then wants the guy to go out and investigate, but he says he's not going out there with a "boner." She informs him that he's not "getting any" unless he does, so he puts on pants and exits the tent.
  • After Trent asks him to pump the gas, Nolan sarcastically states that he gives a "wicked blow job" too.
  • One guy mocks Chewie about buying condoms, asking if he thinks he's going to get "laid." Chewie then says they're not for sex, but instead are for an experiment (but we never know what that is).
  • Seeing a stuffed bobcat in the cabin, one of the guys jokes, "That is a serious p*ssy."
  • Trent suggestively tells Jenna there's one type of exercise he needs to do (meaning sex), but she laughs that off.
  • Nolan makes sexual gestures aimed at Chelsea behind her back. About his rebellious nature, she later tells him she finds that hot. Even later, we see her water-boarding (water skiing on the equivalent of a snowboard) wearing just a small bikini bottom, meaning her bare breasts are seen various times. Her bare breasts are seen again later while she's in the water.
  • A man looks at a porn magazine (we see a nude woman, including bare breasts and what looked like a split-second view of a bare crotch), and he licks the latter area of the photo. He hears a noise, goes over and pulls a cover off a nude female mannequin, and then talks of "her" taking his virginity and that he'll be "pounding" her hard, all as he gropes the plastic bare breasts.
  • About Chewie holding ping pong balls, Trent sarcastically states that Chewie likes having "balls" in his hands.
  • Chewie drinks while making a toast to "All the felching, belching p*ssies of the world."
  • Bree does a sexy dance in a halter top and tight cutoffs, with Chewie stating he'd like to die and come back as an "ass button" on her jeans. Lawrence tells him he should make his move, but Chewie states he'd have a better chance of "f*cking" a penguin than her. She later shows him how to drink a flaming drink, telling him you just "blow and suck," with him telling her she's good at that.
  • Chewie states they don't call him "the wood" because he masturbates a lot.
  • Bree does some sexy moves for Trent, and we see her in just panties as she climbs onto him on the bed (as he states, "Your t*ts are stupendous"). When we return to this scene, she's having sex on top of him (he states her "t*ts are juicy"), recording the encounter on a video camera she holds. We see movement, her bare breasts and the top of her bare butt, while we hear sexual sounds. We next see a view of this encounter through an outside window (and through which Jason later watches them), and then inside (with more movement, nudity and sounds) where they finally finish.
  • Now alone in the living room of the cabin, Lawrence tries to find any sort of picture in a catalogue he can use to masturbate with (he finds one of a fully clothed woman, and nothing remotely explicit). But a stuffed animal head on the wall causes him to turn sideways, but Clay and Jenna burst into the room, thus interrupting him before he starts.
  • Finding a hockey stick, Chewie jokes to himself that it's curved to the left, just like his (unseen) penis.
  • Despite him just having had sex with Bree, Trent accuses Jenna of being with Clay and "f*cking" all night (when that isn't true).
  • SMOKING
  • None.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • Clay spends most of the film looking for his adult sister who's gone missing.
  • Clay tells the local sheriff that his mom recently died of cancer and that Whitney missed the funeral, indicating that something is amiss.
  • An older local states that if Clay's sister is missing around there, that means she's dead.
  • Clay says that he and Whitney had a falling out in the past.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Serial killers.
  • Why people enjoy watching boogeyman type horror films.
  • Casual sex.
  • VIOLENCE
  • In a flashback prologue, a young scared woman runs through the woods at night. Jason's mom then pops out and scares her, accuses her of being responsible for her son's death, and then comes at the young woman with a knife. But the latter swings something that decapitates the mother, with her head falling to the ground.
  • We hear Jason kill a young man, and later see the victim's bloody body.
  • Jason grabs a young woman through a tent and we next see her hanging in what looks like a sleeping bag over an open fire. She struggles to get out from the heat, with the bottom of the bag catching on fire. It eventually tears open and we see her partially charred body on the ground. At the same time, her boyfriend/lover races up to try to rescue her, but a bear trap slams shut on his leg, badly injuring him (with bloody results).
  • As Whitney tries to free a guy whose leg is stuck in a bear trap, Jason comes up behind her and slams a machete down through the guy's head (with bloody results) and then comes after Whitney, but the scene ends there.
  • A man hears a noise and slowly goes to investigate, pulling a cover off a figure that turns out to be just a female mannequin. We then see Jason behind that man, and the killer slices the man's neck, with lots of blood coming out.
  • Chewie burns his lips/mouth on a flaming drink.
  • Chewie accidentally breaks an overhead light with a hockey stick.
  • Jason pushes his next victim down and then thrashes him about. The victim tries to defend himself with a screwdriver, but Jason catches the young man's arm, turns around the screwdriver, and slowly pushes it up through the man's chin, with very bloody results.
  • Trent shoves Clay back.
  • A young woman hears noises and slowly walks through the cabin, searching for its source. She slowly opens a shower curtain, finding nothing, but Jason is then behind her. He grabs her, lifts her from the floor, and then impales her on mounted antlers on the wall.
  • Jason slams a rod of some sort through a sheriff's head and the door he's next to (with bloody results, including a view of the rod through the eye socket).
  • Trent retrieves a handgun, and upon hearing a sound in the next room, repeatedly fires through the wall, hitting a wounded (and impaled on the wall) or already dead woman.
  • While trying to flee from Jason, a young man is nearly hit by a passing tow truck at night. The driver stops and the man cautiously walks toward the truck, with the only motion inside being an arm that slowly waves him forward. The man isn't sure, thinking it might be Jason, but the killer then suddenly shows up behind the man. He runs a blade through him and then impales him down on the back of the tow truck that speeds away.
  • As the last person tries to climb through a hole in the wall, a blade suddenly comes through her body, killing her (with bloody results).
  • Jason grabs Clay and smashes him repeatedly down against the windows of an overturned school bus. He then comes after Whitney inside that bus, but she kicks him in the face. Both end up falling through a hole down into the killer's tunnels where she repeatedly kicks at him.
  • Jason suddenly grabs Clay through a window, with Clay jabbing his body with some sort of farming tool. The two fight, with Jason getting control of Clay, forcing his face down toward the metal blades of an industrial shredder/chipper. Whitney then distracts Jason, allowing Clay to jam a large bear trap (or equivalent) down onto Jason's back, followed by wrapping chain around his neck. The other end gets into the shredder/chipper and yanks Jason into the air, strangling him. But the wood around which the chain is situated breaks, sending Jason to the floor and he hits Clay to the floor. He comes at Whitney but the chain stops his reach, and she then jams a blade through him, with the chain pulling him back toward the shredder/chipper.
  • Jason suddenly bursts up through a pier and grabs Whitney.
