"FIRED UP!" PLOT: Quarterback Nick (ERIC CHRISTIAN OLSEN) and wide receiver Shawn (NICHOLAS D'AGOSTO) are the star players on the Gerald R. Ford High Tigers football team. When they hear that foul-mouthed Coach Byrnes (PHILIP BAKER HALL) will be taking the team to El Paso rather than a place they imagine will be filled with lots of scantly clad women, they're disappointed. But opportunity comes knocking when they realize that if they join the cheerleading squad they'll likely be the only straight guys surrounded by hundreds of athletic and hopefully willing young women at a cheer camp. Despite the protests of squad leader Carly (SARAH ROEMER) who sees through their scheme, Nick and Shawn -- with the help of the latter's younger but too wise for her years sister, Poppy (JULIETTE GOGLIA) -- are allowed to join since they might help the girls finish somewhere higher than last place at a championship meet. Accordingly, the guys join them in traveling to the cheer camp lead by Coach Keith (JOHN MICHAEL HIGGINS) and his wife, Diora (MOLLY SIMS). While stuck rooming with the likes of Brewster (ADHIR KALYAN) and Downey (JAKE SANDVIG), the guys quickly try to hook up with as many female cheerleaders as possible. But while Nick becomes obsessed with conquering Diora who wants nothing to do with him, Shawn becomes drawn to Carly. However, since she's dating pre-med student, Rick (DAVID WALTON), and must contend with a rival cheerleading squad led by the condescending Gwyneth (ANNALYNNE McCORD), Carly only sees Shawn as a friend. From that point on, the guys end up derailing their own plans as they decide to stick around and try to help their cheerleading squad win. WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT? It's a good bet teens and maybe some older preteens might be interested in it, particularly if the cheerleading angle entices them. WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13 For crude and sexual content throughout, partial nudity, language and some teen partying. CAST AS ROLE MODELS: ERIC CHRISTIAN OLSEN plays the high school's star quarterback who decides to forgo football camp in favor of joining the cheerleading squad. He does so in order to hook up with as many new young women as possible, but also finds himself drawn to the challenge of conquering Diora. He uses profanity and tells various white lies. NICHOLAS D'AGOSTO plays his somewhat more reserved best friend and teammate who joins him in that overall quest, but finds himself drawn to Carly. He also uses profanity. SARAH ROEMER plays the cheerleading squad leader who sees through their ruse but reluctantly is forced to allow them to join the team and travel to cheer camp with them. Dating but unaware that Rick is cheating on her, she also doesn't initially see that Shawn is interested in her as well. MOLLY SIMS plays one of the leaders at cheer camp who dresses somewhat provocatively but rebukes Nick's advances until he inadvertently breaks through her defenses. She then meets him for sex and nearly has that, but they're interrupted before it goes too far. DAVID WALTON plays Carly's boyfriend who's full of himself, looks down on Nick and Shawn, and cheats on Carly. ADHIR KALYAN plays Nick and Shawn's somewhat effeminate cheer camp roommate who's quite lively and goes skinny-dipping when everyone else stays in their underwear. ANNALYNNE McCORD plays the condescending leader of a rival cheerleading squad. PHILIP BAKER HALL plays Nick and Shawn's foul-mouthed football coach. JOHN MICHAEL HIGGINS plays Diora's husband and fellow cheer camp leader who appears to be a closet homosexual. JULIETTE GOGLIA plays Shawn's younger sister who acts much older than her years, although much of that involves various put-downs and use of slang and cultural references to try and sound hip. JAKE SANDVIG plays another roommate of Nick and Shawn's at the camp who turns out to have a gay thing for Nick. CAST, CREW, & TECHNICAL INFO HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit? Then read OUR TAKE of this film. (Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below). OUR WORD TO PARENTS: The following is a brief summary of the content found in this comedy that's been rated PG-13. While no "f" words are heard outright, others are referenced and many words are bleeped out in the end credits. Beyond that, profanity consists of at least 33 "s" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue and song lyrics are present, while young people are seen making out and/or fooling around (with off-screen sex suggested), members of the opposite sex frolic in a pond or lake in just their underwear, and several guys are fully nude, but foreground objects and camera angles block views of anything explicit (although bare butts are partially and fully seen). Many women are viewed as sex objects (by both the main characters and the film that shows some of them in scanty attire). Some gay and lesbian related material is also present. There's some brief striking of others as well as a few bad cheerleader falls/drops, and all sorts of potentially imitative behavior is present. Some drinking occurs in several scenes (with guys seemingly passed out after a party), while some drug-related comments are made. Crude humor is present, as are various bad attitudes, including guys viewing women as little more than sexual conquest material. ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE People drink at a party. A player states that something will be like being on 'shrooms (mushrooms). Poppy states that her brother and Nick only come to see her when they need something, such as Mike's Hard Lemonade. Nick lies to the football coach about why he and Shawn can't go to football camp, giving a number of reasons including that his parents bought him outside a meth clinic for two boxes of Sudafed. Downey says he has beer. Nick makes a comment about George W. Bush snorting coke from a skull in a "t*tty" bar back in his college days. A song has the lyrics, "He drinks a whisky drink. He drinks a vodka drink. He drinks a lager drink" and well as "Pissing the night away." There's a flashback where Downey invites Nick to join him for some wine. We see many guys seemingly passed out after a party. BLOOD/GORE Coach Byrnes tells Nick and Shawn that they'll "sh*t blood out of holes" they didn't know they ever had and that they should skip their "morning sh*t." One cheerleader states they could "take a dump" in their pants and still do better in the competition than last year. About the cheerleaders repeatedly chanting about the obvious on a bus trip, Poppy tells the guys "Just wait till their cycles match up." Using it as an analogy, Nick tells Shawn, "Do not poop where you eat. That's why there's no restaurant called 'The Bathroom.'" A variation of that is repeated later in the film. As a metaphor, Nick asks Shawn, "Why take a leak all over my dreams?" Shawn states he has to "take a leak," but it's Nick who we see with his back to the camera moments later (no urination is actually seen). Nick realizes he has Downey's anal beads in his (Nick's) mouth (thinking it was just a bracelet of some sort). A song has the lyrics "I hate it when a guy doesn't understand why a certain time of month, I don't want to hold his hand." DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE Nick and Shawn initially view women as little more than sexual conquests. A girl states, "I'm just retarded about..." One cheerleader says she's open to trying steroids to improve their performance, shocking others with her. Nick lies to the football coach about why he and Shawn can't go to football camp. About their rivals, the Panthers, showing up, one cheerleader states, "The last bus from bitchville pulled in." Those rivals have a condescending attitude toward the Tigers, including one who makes a reference to a rival being fat (she's not). Nick makes a comment about George W. Bush snorting coke from a skull in a "t*tty" bar back in his college days, adding that it shows any "idiot" can become President. Rick is full of himself, referring to himself as "doctor" despite still being in school. He also looks down on Shawn and Nick, and cheats on Carly. Rick and his college friends boast about some easy girls they were just with, and Rick jokes about the bite marks he has on his "badonkadonk" (presumably referring to his butt -- unseen) and that another should smell his knuckles. Some homophobic comments are made, such as Nick telling Shawn, "That's not lame, that's gay," while other such terms, including "Queer-a-tron" (Rick about Nick's poetry), "No sh*t, lez-baton" (Poppy to a lesbian) and "Gaylord" (also said by her). More of that occurs from Poppy during the end credits where various words are bleeped out as used with "queer." Some viewers might not like when one person uses the phrase "Rock me, sexy Jesus" (taken from the movie "Hamlet 2"). Diora eventually finds Nick enticing (despite being married to Coach Keith) and tells him to meet her somewhere later. They nearly have sex, but are interrupted. A Panther cheerleader asks a rival, "How does it feel to still suck ass?" prompting the second to punch the first. FRIGHTENING SCENES Finishing a cheer, Shawn does some flips/somersaults but falls off the stage and lands in some surrounding water. Everyone panics as he just floats there, face-down, but he then moves and is okay. GUNS/WEAPONS None. The various cheers and such might be enticing for some kids to imitate, including one where a girl is tossed up into the air and comes down through a basketball hoop. One of the guys runs and dives through an open window of a vehicle. A girl has a pierced navel. Coach Byrnes repeatedly uses many variation of the "s" word in whatever he says. To show off their gymnastic cheerleader abilities, the guys throw a Frisbee up into a tree, toss Poppy up to grab that, and then do a controlled catch of her. They then do various somersaults and such as they leave. Carly leads the other cheerleaders in repeatedly chanting obvious comments ("We, are driving. We, we are driving") on a bus trip. Poppy does a mock hanging herself gesture. When Gwyneth and her squad leave, they make exaggerated/dramatic Panther expressions (theatrical claws, faces, etc.). When Coach Keith asks, "How do you spell 'Fired Up?'" the cheerleaders all reply in unison "F-U!" One girl has a visible tattoo on her lower back. We see a montage of Nick and Shawn making out with different girls. That includes one partly lying on Nick (clothed), while both do sit-ups with girls when the kiss occurs at the top for both parties (we also see two girls doing the same). Most of the cheerleaders repeat in unison lines from the movie "Bring it On" as that movie plays outdoors. Some football players briefly pelt others with wads of appears to be raw hamburger. One of the football players has a large face drawn on his now exposed bare belly and jams a Twinkie into his belly button (the face's mouth). We see many guys seemingly passed out after a party and one who's awake states he and another are going to spray whipping cream on another guy's "Johnson." We don't see that, but as the cream sprays out on the floor, one of the guys jokes, "My horse is peeing." Accompanied by a hand gesture to Carly's mouth, Gwyneth completes a put-down taunt by asking, "Drool much?" JUMP SCENES None. MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE) None. MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE) Some songs had lyrics that we couldn't fully hear and/or understand, thus presenting the possibility of them potentially containing something objectionable. A song has the line "Dirty minds, dirty minds think alike." A song has a line about "drop it down, just wanna see you touch the ground," "shake your body like a belly dancer" and "booty-licious and jingling." A song repeatedly uses the term "bitches." A song includes use of the "s" word. A song has the lyrics, "He drinks a whisky drink. He drinks a vodka drink. He drinks a lager drink" and well as "Pissing the night away." A song repeats the lyric, "Stop being a d*ck-head." A song has the lyric "Hell yeah." A song has the lyrics "I hate it when a guy doesn't understand why a certain time of month, I don't want to hold his hand. I hate it when they go out and we stay in, and they come home smelling like their ex-girlfriends." A song uses the words "hell" and "damn." PROFANITY At least 33 "s" words, 10 slang terms for sex (including variations of "do," "screw," "bang," "hitting that," "hook up," "poking" and "tap that"), 15 slang terms using male genitals ("d*ck," "bone," "sausage," "crankshaft," "tool" and "Johnson"), 2 using female genitals ("itchy itchy nana-nana" and "snooch"), 5 for breasts ("t*tties," "boob," "lumps" and "rack"), 21 damns, 15 asses (5 used with "hole"), 6 hells, 1 S.O.B.," 6 uses each of "God" and "Oh my God," and 1 use each of "Christ," "Dear Lord," "G-damn," "Mother of God," "Oh God" and "Sweet Jesus." The "f" word is implied in the use of "B.F.D" ("Big f*cking deal"), while many words are bleeped out during footage shown during the end credits (with the letters F-U superimposed over the mouths of those cussing), so it's impossible to tell exactly what they're saying. In addition, the letters F-U are repeated many times (short for "Fired Up"), but the joke is that they're also short for a phrase using the "f" word. SEX/NUDITY We see Shawn and Nick making out with two girls in one's living room. One girl (in her panties or very small/tight shorts) tells Nick she thinks she's ready (presumably to have sex) and they get up and start to leave the room, just as the girl with Shawn takes off one top layer of clothing (she's still clothed beneath that). All of that stops, however, when the girls' respective fathers unexpectedly arrive, sending the boys fleeing through the neighborhood (where what may be a sexually related comment about "coming" days later may occur). They end up jumping a fence and accidentally land in a pool, but then note the young women in bikinis both in and out of the water, and seem happy about that. During football, another player asks Nick what he wants to do, with him replying a girl up in the stands. Some slang terms/innuendo are then used to describe her breasts. After hearing Carly state that there will be 300 girls who want it more and are better than them (at the competition), one of the guys twists that around in a sexual way (meaning girls who want sex more than them, etc.). Knowing their m.o. of sweet-talking girls, Carly tells one of the guys that she knows he loves every bone in "my body...especially yours." She also says she knows they leave no girl "unturned" and then says she's walking away backwards from them so they don't look at her "ass." They then comment on her "nice lumps" and "hitting that." Poppy states that her brother and Nick only come to see her when they need skin mags, Mike's Hard Lemonade or another trip to "the clinic." She then comments on them being through every girl in their school and looking for some "new produce." She then comments on "itchy, itchy na-na" and "wall to wall carpet" (presumably referring to female genitals), and that Carly isn't one of their "humpty-hump" football groupies. We see Carly in a one-piece bathing suit, while another cheerleader shows cleavage. We see various shirtless guys in the locker room. Making up a story, Nick yells about his "spermless liar" father. A song has the line "Dirty minds, dirty minds think alike." When their bus hits a bump, Carly accidentally lands on Shawn's lap. He jokingly calls her "handsy" and says she should at least buy him dinner first. That happens again and her fingers accidently land in his mouth, with him joking that now she's just taking advantage of him. When the guys get to the cheerleading camp, one states "We may have screwed the pooch on this" (made a big mistake), but when the other sees all of the sexy cheerleaders doing their thing (stretching, etc.), he states, "Or maybe the pooch will screw us." About the sights, one states, "Sweet Mary in a D-cup," while Nick comes on to Diora by asking, "What are you doing later?" Perturbed, she replies, "Not you." He then asks if she likes canopy beds. A song has a line about "drop it down, just wanna see you touch the ground," "shake your body like a belly dancer" and "booty-licious and jingling." About the guys being on the Tigers' squad, Gwyneth states, "So you got some sausage in your soup this year. B-F-D." About the cheerleaders, one of the guys says it's like the "hot chick" produce aisle. Nick makes a comment about George W. Bush snorting coke from a skull in a "t*tty" bar back in his college days. We see miscellaneous cleavage from time to time, as well as many bare midriffs among the cheerleaders in their standard outfits. Others are seen in small/tight shorts, and the camera occasionally focuses on that in close-up. Coach Keith states the first part of him out of his mother's "whats-it" at birth were his baby hands doing "spirit fingers." Nick keeps a list of all of his sexual conquests in his hometown, but he tells Shawn the latter can't "hook up" with Carly as that would goof up their plan (of using the cheerleading as a ruse to bed as many girls as possible and then leave). About Diora, Nick states that she's a "fox" and "I'm gonna tap that before we leave." We see a montage of Nick and Shawn making out with different girls. That includes while partly lying on Nick (clothed), while both do sit-ups with girls when the kiss occurs at the top for both parties (we also see two girls doing the same, and one cheerleader is presented as being a lesbian). When Nick mentions a band in relation to a girl, Shawn states, "They suck" (about the band), with Nick replying, "So did she." Diora shows cleavage in what appears to be a sports bra. Carly amends Shawn's misstatement about Carly's earlier view of them by saying she thought they were "heartless boob grabbers." Seeing Rick making out with Carly, one of the guys asks, "Who's the face eater?" Rick then comments on him and Carly going to a restaurant and getting a private spot so that no one can see how much they are "all you can eating" (presumably innuendo, especially when he makes some sort of mouth movement after saying that). About thinking Shawn has been moping for 2 hours rather than the real 5 minutes, Nick jokes about his time judgment, "I guess I really do suck in bed." Nick and Shawn convince some female cheerleaders that the best place to practice is in a nearby pond. They state they don't have swimsuits, but then agree to do so in their bras and panties. The guys strip down to their underwear, but Brewster completely strips down and we see his bare butt. The others see his full frontal nudity as well as him apparently swinging his penis around (we see the motion, but not the full view). Everyone then gets into the water with much cavorting (and girls in panties on the guys' shoulders, doing stunts, etc.). One girl removes her bra and then Nick's underwear (under the water, so nothing is seen), while two girls do the same to Shawn (with sex or just fooling around implied). When everyone is getting dressed, we see Brewster's bare butt again, and Nick and Shawn then realize their clothes are missing (while in the water, one or more raccoons took that). That means they have to run back to their rooms at night fully naked (hands over crotches), but they then run into Coach Keith who asks what they're doing. They lie about practicing cheerleading moves that way, so he wants to see that, and thus they perform nude, but with their bodies or held pompoms blocking our view of their crotches, but we do see brief side views of their bare butts. During this, one of the guys complains about the other "crank shaft" and they finish their routine with one on top of the back of the other (a gay rear entry sex joke on the part of the film for the visual). Rick and his college friends boast about some easy girls they were just with, and Rick jokes about the bite marks he has on his "badonkadonk" (presumably referring to his butt -- unseen) and that another should smell his knuckles. About Shawn wanting to tell Carly that Rick is cheating on her, Nick warns Shawn that by poking in her business, he won't later be "poking in her business" (meaning sex). Nick reminds Shawn that their plan about attending cheerleading camp was "Kiss, kiss. Bang bang" (the latter meaning sex). We briefly see Nick shirtless when he changes shirts. There's a comment about "big ass t*tties." After Diora is turned on by his non-sexual poetry, Nick states he didn't think of using real feelings to wrangle "snooch." After Nick realizes Downey is gay (and Shawn has informed him the bracelet in his mouth is actually Downey's anal beads), we see quick flashback views of Downey grabbing Nick's clothed butt, asking if he wants to join him in having some wine, and similarly showing up nude in the above nude pompom scene (no explicit nudity on his part). We see a young woman in a bikini on a video, and Nick comments about her or another similarly dressed woman, "Look at the pooper on that one." We see many guys seemingly passed out after a party and one who's awake states he and another are going to spray whipping cream on another guy's "Johnson." A female cheerleader wakes up to find another female cheerleader in bed with her. The latter says she must have slept walk, but then snuggles up with the first and puts her hand on the other's clothed breast. Coach Keith tells Nick and Shawn that the next time "you screw up, I'll have both of your asses." That's explained later when we see him coming on to Nick (and getting behind him) after finding him nude and fooling around with Diora, his wife. Diora eventually finds Nick enticing (despite being married to Coach Keith) and tells him to meet her somewhere later. We later see them meet and partially strip down (him to his underwear and then apparently more), with her getting on top of him. Her husband then arrives, Diora leaves, and the male coach comes on to Nick. Downey slaps Nick on the clothed butt twice. Gwyneth shows cleavage. We see Rick passionately kissing Gwyneth, groping her clothed chest, and her then having her legs around his waist as he stands. Carly passionately kisses Shawn and he does the same back to her. SMOKING None. TENSE FAMILY SCENES None, although Nick fakes a bit, in a hyper-exaggerated fashion, about his parents to his football coach to get out of going to camp. TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT The protagonists' view of women as little more than sexual conquests, while the film also presents many of the latter as sex objects. One cheerleader says she's open to trying steroids to improve their performance, shocking others with her. Cheerleading, including on a competitive level. One football player accidentally falls and lands on a campfire, briefly setting his clothed arm on fire (played for comedy). Mad at Nick and Shawn for stating they can't attend football camp, Coach Byrnes throws a football at them (they duck, and it misses). Nick repeatedly whacks Shawn in one scene. One cheerleader ends up falling to her face during a routine. Nick and Shawn accident drop a cheerleader during a routine where they're supposed to catch her. Some football players briefly pelt others with wads of appears to be raw hamburger. Shawn stands on Nick's shoulders to be up along a balcony to talk to Carly. He then dangles from that when Nick falls, and then falls onto Nick on the ground. Finishing a cheer, Shawn does some flips/somersaults but falls off the stage and lands in some surrounding water.
