PLOT: Burt Farlander (JOHN KRASINSKI) and Verona De Tessant (MAYA RUDOLPH) are an unmarried couple who are expecting their first child together. When they learn that his parents -- Jerry (JEFF DANIELS) and Gloria (CATHERINE O'HARA) -- are moving to Antwerp for two years, they realize they're no longer tethered to their current locale and can choose where they'll next live and raise their child. Accordingly, they decide to travel to a number of places, starting with Phoenix where they visit Lily (ALLISON JANNEY) and Lowell (JIM GAFFIGAN), but realize that Verona's former coworker is an awful parent. That's followed a trip to Tucson to see Verona's sister, Grace (CARMEN EJOGO), after which they visit Burt's unofficial "cousin," LN (MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL), a new age professor he's known since they were kids, and who's living with the like-minded Roderick (JOSH HAMILTON). They eventually head off to Montreal where they stay with Verona's college roommate, Munch Garnett (MELANIE LYNSKEY), her husband, Tom Garnett (CHRIS MESSINA), and that couple's happy, adopted kids, and eventually head down to Miami to see Burt's brother, Courtney (PAUL SCHNEIDER), whose wife has left him and their young daughter. Yet, for all of their traveling, Burt and Verona realize that appearances can be deceiving and that they must chose their own path for their family. WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT? Older teens might be interested if they're fans of anyone in the cast and/or director Sam Mendes, but it doesn't otherwise seem too likely for any other kids. WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R For language and some sexual content. CAST AS ROLE MODELS: JOHN KRASINSKI plays an insurance salesman who wants to be the best dad possible to his pending baby. Accordingly, he travels around the continent with his pregnant, live-in girlfriend, trying to find the best place to start their family, although he's disappointed that Verona is strongly opposed to getting married. He uses strong profanity and drinks. MAYA RUDOLPH plays his pregnant, live-in girlfriend who doesn't believe in marriage and thus doesn't want to marry him, but is obviously committed to Burt. She uses strong profanity and can't believe the behavior of and comments from some of those they visit. ALLISON JANNEY plays Verona's former coworker who turns out to be an awful parent (by being demeaning to her kids in front of them -- she also uses strong profanity), much like her husband played by JIM GAFFIGAN who drinks as does she. MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL plays Burt's unofficial "cousin" who he's known since he was a kid. A new age type professor, she has various quirks and idiosyncrasies that don't mesh with Burt or Verona. JOSH HAMILTON plays her like-minded partner who lives by the same sort of philosophies. MELANIE LYNSKEY and CHRIS MESSINA play Verona's former college classmates who seem to have a perfect life with all of their happily adopted kids, but they have some big disappointments in their lives. They drink some. CARMEN EJOGO plays Verona's sister who uses some profanity and wonders why she never wants to talk about their deceased parents. PAUL SCHNEIDER plays Burt's brother who's reeling from his wife leaving him and their young daughter, with him being concerned about how that's going to affect the young girl. JEFF DANIELS and CATHERINE O'HARA play Burt's happy parents who don't seem to have given any thought about moving out of the country after Burt and Verona have moved nearby to raise their family close to them. CAST, CREW, & TECHNICAL INFO HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit? Then read OUR TAKE of this film. OUR WORD TO PARENTS: Here's a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated dramedy. Profanity consists of at least 15 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue is present, while a man performs oral sex on his live-in girlfriend under the covers (nothing explicit is seen) and is obsessed with breasts. A woman slaps her live-in boyfriend out of bed (played for laughs), while drinking occurs in various scenes and there's a brief, drug-related comment. Some bad attitudes (including racially based) are present, as are various instances of tense family and thematic material. If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content. ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE Burt and his parents have wine with dinner. Burt brings Lily and Lowell a bottle of wine, with Lily saying they should get a drink. We then see Lily with a drink, and then Lowell with the same, followed by another view of the two of them drinking. We see a beer by Burt at a pool. About Burt joking that it's so hot it's as if God is melting them down, Grace states, "That is so stoney." Burt has a drink where miscellaneous people also have drinks. Burt and Verona bring wine to LN's house. Burt, LN and Roderick have wine with dinner. Munch drinks from a flask in a car (she's a passenger) and then hands that to Burt in the backseat. Burt and Tom have shots in a bar, where Munch has wine elsewhere in the same place (and miscellaneous people have beer). Burt and his brother have beer. About Courtney missing some carrot juice on his daughter's face for her school photo, Burt says at least it wasn't whiskey or glue. BLOOD/GORE We see a sketch that Verona has created, of a man with the side of his head open, revealing his brain. But she then states, "I just gave this guy's brain a vulva." About his upbringing, Roderick says it's no wonder he can't walk into a dry cleaner without vomiting. About kids and family, Tom says one must have patience when a child "pukes." DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE Burt's mom asks Verona about her in utero baby, "Just how black do you think he'll be?" Lily is a bad parent, making fun of her kids within earshot of them and in front of Burt and Verona. That includes joking that the son's head looks like a trophy (ears like handles), and that her teen daughter has the "dyke look" and walks like a Teamster. She then continues about her going "butch on us," talks about her big butt (saying it looks like bricks in there) and then half-jokingly wonders if "dykes go for that." Lily tries kissing Burt when the two couples say goodbye. About Verona's ethnicity, LN callously states that her (Verona's) people (meaning blacks) have a wonderful oral tradition. She then tells him "Just don't blow," and he proceeds, with us hearing her sexual sounds as well as sounds of him kissing her down there. But he stops, saying she tastes different, but when she says she can shower, he says it's not dirty, just different, and fruity. He then comments about vaginal changes occurring when a woman goes through menopause or (but doesn't complete the "is pregnant" thought as she slaps him out of the bed). We next see her with a pregnant belly. We see a sketch that Verona has created, of a man with the side of his head open, revealing his brain. But she then states, "I just gave this guy's brain a vulva." About being pregnant with Burt, his mom states that her breasts were engorged with milk. A statuette shows a female figure with her hand over her bare breast. Lily is a bad parent, making fun of her kids within earshot of them and in front of Burt and Verona. That includes joking her teen daughter has the "dyke look," continues about her going "butch on us," talks about her big butt (saying it looks like bricks in there) and then half-jokingly wonders if "dykes go for that." About herself, she then asks, "I used to have nice t*ts, right?" She then comments on her "jugs," that her kids "sucked me dry," and that she now tucks her breasts -- that she says look like a hairy old man's "nut sack" -- into her socks. Later, Verona and Burt comment on Lily's "boobs," with Verona stating they were huge and enormous. Lily tries kissing Burt when the two couples say goodbye. Before seeing her sister, Verona, who shows cleavage, tells Burt not to look at her sister's "boobs," stating they're bigger now that she's on the pill, with Burt joking why she can't be on the pill. While on the phone, Burt jokingly points out a mother's clothed breasts to Verona, making a big chest gesture with his hands. About that, Verona tells her sister of all things to be worried about with her pregnancy, he's only concerned about her "boobs." Verona shows cleavage. While traveling by train and lying on a separate bunk, Verona states she's tired of being big and not having sex. That gets Burt's attention, with him asking if that means she wants to "do it" now. She then says it's been a month, and he again asks that question, but she says no. He then jokes that he'll love her even if she gets so big "I can't find your vagina" (followed by that being repeated). The comment "you c*nt-sucker" is used jokingly. A classic style statue shows male full frontal nudity. When Burt and Verona visit LN, she's breastfeeding her two kids, one an older boy (we don't see her bare breasts). LN then comments about previous word of Verona's tilted uterus. Upon hearing that LN and her husband's kids sleep with them, Verona awkwardly asks what if the two of them want to be alone (to have sex), wondering if they go out to the car. LN says no, and then asks Burt and Verona if they plan on hiding their lovemaking from their kids, and if they're making love now in Verona's sixth month of pregnancy (they say no). When it's stated that LN's husband is goofed up because of his rigid, non-sexually open upbringing, it's mentioned that he has an Electra complex, but Verona states that's when the woman wants to "do" her father. LN and her husband then equate themselves to sea horses, with LN saying she wants to plant her eggs in his pouch. LN then comments on having an intense orgasm during childbirth. After having a falling out with LN and her husband, and then pushing their son around in a stroller (something his parents are against), Burt tells the boy that he (the boy) won't have that much fun again until he discovers "oral pleasure." Burt tells Verona he had a dream about her. She asks if she was topless in it and he says yes. About kids, family and sacrifices made for that, Tom comments about one's dream of swimming naked off the coast of Greece. We see a miscellaneous shirtless guy on stage in a club, followed by Munch doing a clothed pole dance. Verona jokingly asks Burt if he promises to stop talking about finding or not being able to find her vagina (he agrees). SMOKING None. TENSE FAMILY SCENES Burt and Verona are shocked that his parents are moving out of the country just before she's about to deliver their grandchild. When Burt half-jokingly tells Verona it's not like her parents are doing anything (about her being pregnant, after news that Burt's parents are moving away), she replies that her parents are dead. Lily is a bad parent, making fun of her kids within earshot of them and in front of Burt and Verona. That includes joking that the son's head looks like a trophy (ears like handles), and that her teen daughter has the "dyke look" and walks like a Teamster. She then continues about her going "butch on us," talks about her big butt (saying it looks like bricks in there) and then half-jokingly wonders if "dykes go for that."
