QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: An Israeli anti-terrorism commando fakes his own death so that he can travel to New York City and pursue his secret dream of being a hair stylist.
PLOT:
Anti-terrorism commando Zohan (ADAM SANDLER) is a legend among his people for his ability to catch the bad guys. Yet, he has a secret longing and that's to be a hair stylist like his idol, Paul Mitchell. Thus, while battling arch-rival Palestinian terrorist The Phantom (JOHN TURTURRO), Zohan fakes his own death and heads to New York City to start his new life. Unfortunately, he's laughed out of his idol's salon, and ends up staying with a man he's just met, Michael (NICK SWARDSON), who lives with his mom, Gail (LAINIE KAZAN). Much to Michael's disgust, the ladies man soon gets busy with her.

While trying to find a job styling hair, Zohan is recognized by Oori (IDO MOSSERI), an Israeli now working in an electronics store, and he suggests that Zohan head across the street to the small salon run by Dalia (EMMANUELLE CHRIQUI), a Palestinian who's tired of the long-standing conflict between her people and Israeli. Not wanting to be identified, Zohan lies that he's Scrappy Coco from Australia and takes a job sweeping up in the salon.

Yet, he soon proves his worth, and quickly overshadows stylist Claude (ALEC MAPA), in satisfying the mostly middle-aged and older female clientele, not only with the hair cuts, but also by making them feel sexy and attractive, especially with randy post-cut rendezvous in the supply closet. He's soon a hit, but his falling for Dalia eventually stymies his lovemaking abilities with others.

But that's the least of his worries as Arab cab driver Salim (ROB SCHNEIDER) recognizes Zohan and reports that to The Phantom who's also in the city now running a popular restaurant. With developer Walbridge (MICHAEL BUFFER) trying to incite ethnic hatred between the Jews and Arabs on the street (so that he can raze their buildings and open a mall), Zohan must deal with all of that as he tries to pursue his new life of styling hair.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of Sandler, anyone else in the cast, or stupid/raunchy comedies, they just might.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For crude and sexual content throughout, language and nudity.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • ADAM SANDLER plays an Israeli anti-terrorism commando who secretly longs to be a hair stylist and thus fakes his own death, sets off for New York City, and tries to find a job. He does, working for Dalia (whom he eventually falls for), and becomes quite a draw with middle-aged and older women. That's not only for the hair cuts, but flirting with and/or having sex with them as well (he also has sex with Gail). He drinks some, uses some profanity, and battles various villains, all while doing and saying all sorts of things that kids might want to imitate.
  • JOHN TURTURRO plays his arch-nemesis, a Palestinian terrorist who runs a restaurant in New York City after believing he's killed Zohan. Once he learns that's not correct, he sets out to battle him again.
  • EMMANUELLE CHRIQUI plays the Palestinian woman who runs the salon where Zohan becomes a big hit. She must contend with his antics and him falling for her, as well as Walbridge trying to drive her and others out of business.
  • NICK SWARDSON plays a guy who befriends Zohan but is disgusted by the hair dresser's sexual escapades with his mom.
  • LAINIE KAZAN plays his middle-aged mom who enjoys having sexual relations with Zohan.
  • IDO MOSSERI plays an Israeli in New York City who recognizes Zohan, but keeps that on the down-low. He works in an electronics shop.
  • ROB SCHNEIDER plays an Arab cab driver in New York City who holds a long-standing grudge against Zohan and thus reports his presence to The Phantom when he recognizes him.
  • MICHAEL BUFFER plays a ruthless developer who tries to incite Arab-Jew conflict among business owners and residents so that he can raze their buildings and put a mall there.
  • ALEC MAPA plays Dalia's effeminate hair stylist who must contend with Zohan's presence and unorthodox ways of dealing with customers.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this comedy that's been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of an incomplete "f" word, while other expletives and colorful phrases (real and made-up) are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue is present, as is all sorts of sexually related behavior (off-screen sex, various visual sexual metaphors, bulges and movement under a man's clothed crotch, the humping of people and inanimate objects, etc.). A man's bare butt is seen several times, as is a woman's once, while scantly clad women are also seen.

Comedy-based violence includes several instances of fighting (punching, kicking and other contact), attempts on others' lives and the wounding of others, etc. Some animal abuse (played for comedy) is also present. Various characters have bad attitudes (and various stereotypes might be offensive to some viewers), but everything's played for comedy.

Characters drink in various scenes, crude humor is present, and all sorts of behavior (some of it potentially dangerous) might be enticing for some kids to imitate.

Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, we see some brief strobe effects in a club.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there's some camera movement in the film.

  • Zohan states that one doesn't "sh*t" where they eat and vice-versa, commenting on that being due to the smell.

  • All of the following is played for comedy.
  • The terrorists (Palestinian and American redneck) obviously have bad attitudes (including The Phantom), as does Walbridge for trying to incite ethnic strife for his own personal gain.
  • Some viewers may take offense with some/all of the comedy-based ethnic stereotypes presented in the film.
  • After defeating some muscle-bound men in tug of war, Zohan does the same to a large bull, pulling it into a pit.

  • Some American women are rude to Salim as their cab driver (saying he might be a terrorist), while he talks on the phone, etc. while driving them (thus being rude as well).
  • Oori recognizes Zohan, but when the latter says he's a hairdresser, Oori uses the "faggela" term and later the phrase "hair homo" is also used.
  • A person tells a woman, "You're a stupid cow."
  • Zohan and Oori juggle a cat on and back and forth between their feet (like hacky-sack), eventually joined by Michael (the cat doesn't seem to mind -- thus kids might be enticed to try the same).
  • Salim and two other men decide to make a bomb, but a pharmacist misunderstands their product request and gives them Neosporin instead, saying it works (but not for what they're intending).
  • Some rednecks (hired by Walbridge to spark ethnic strife) use terms such as "Ahab" and "camel jockey" while spray-painting some hateful graffiti.
  • Walbridge wants to build a mall where Dalia, Oori and others have their businesses, and thus tries to force them out by raising their rent.

  • A song has the lyric "Sex you up."
  • PROFANITY
  • Various made-up slang terms and phrases are present, but we have no idea how to spell some of them. That said, we heard at least 1 incomplete "f" word (used with "mother"), 7 "s" words (and 3 other derivations), 12 slang terms for sex ("bang-boom," "hit," "tap," "bangable" and "make stinky" - or "sticky"), 7 slang terms using male genitals (what sounded like "stitzel," "hog," "pee-pee" and others), 4 using female ones (what sounded like "pootakin," "poochy-baba" and another), 4 for breasts ("t*ts," "melons" and what sounded like "t*tta"), 7 asses (1 used with "hole"), 2 hells, 1 crap, 1 damn, 1 S.O.B., 3 uses of "Oh my God" and 1 use each of "For God's sakes" and "G-damn."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • We see many young and shapely woman in small bikinis with Zohan who's first seen in cut-offs (in which he catches a ball in the clothed rear crack -- and then pops it up from there by tightening his buttocks). We next see him grilling food nude (the grill blocks a front view of his lower half, but a view from behind shows his full rear nudity). He dances around like that (more butt views, and the smiles of women looking at his crotch that we don't see) and he then catches a fish in his bare butt crack (similarly to the ball before that). We then see a shirtless Zohan with a bikini-clad woman on his shoulders as he plays tug of war with various muscle-bound men in very small shorts.
  • We see a man in briefs and a t-shirt with several bikini-clad young women.
  • We see Zohan lying in bed with a huge bulge in the front of his briefs.
  • We see Zohan shirtless.
  • To prove how tough he is, The Phantom places a small fish on his neck where it bites him. To compete, Zohan drops that or a similar fish down the front of his own pants (we don't see the contact, but The Phantom does and winces at that view).
  • A song has the lyric "Sex you up."
  • While starring into Paul Mitchell's empty hair salon at night, Zohan unconsciously humps the window or door (clothed).

  • Zohan adjusts his clothed crotch.
  • Gail shows some cleavage.
  • Michael walks in to see Zohan behind his bent-over mom and is shocked by the sight (we don't see the actual sexual contact). Gail says she can't feel her legs, and Zohan says that will come back in a few hours. Moments later, Zohan walks out in small briefs with a huge bulge in the front. He uses a "bang" and "bam" slang term for sex, and then tells Michael he'll "hit" (have sex with) Michael's mom one more time and then they can go.
  • Talking to Michael, Zohan asks "Who wants to get some pootakin?" (or something close to that as a slang term for female genitals) and we next see them in a club where Michael dances quite close and from behind with a stranger (as does Zohan with a scantly clad one), prompting a bouncer to carry Michael out. At that club, Zohan scratches a record back and forth with his clothed crotch or butt.
  • In a commercial for The Phantom's restaurant, we see small military action figures, with the one representing The Phantom behind the bent over one representing Zohan that then blows up.
  • Michael walks in to see Zohan doing his mom's hair, and we see Zohan's bare butt in a mirror reflection (the front view of him is blocked). However, when Gail stands up, we see her bare butt (the film portrays it as very large for laughs, especially with Michael seeing that and being disgusted).
  • About a woman's hair cut, Zohan says it draws the attention down to her chest (he uses a derivation of "t*t") and the vacuum nozzle he's holding accidentally affixes itself to her clothed chest.
  • Claude tells Zohan and Dalia to get a room, with Zohan shooting back some comment using a made-up slang term for male genitals.
  • Flirting with an older customer, Zohan tells her she's very "bangable" and that his "stitzel" (or something like that, referring to his penis) is about to burst.
  • We occasionally see Zohan with his shirt open.
  • Zohan pounds his chest twice and then taps his clothed crotch twice (and does this again later in the film).
  • Zohan tells an older customer, "You've got the ass and t*ts of a schoolgirl." He then removes her earring with his lips and tongue (seen in close-up), does some clothed pelvic thrusting behind her, and gives her a sensual/sexy haircut. During this, the older woman is aroused and her hands move down her clothed body toward her crotch, while we see a dog licking itself and then a view of Zohan shooting some water up from a nozzle positioned down by his crotch (to simulate an exaggerated orgasm). We next hear sexual sounds from an adjacent closet and then see both come out, buttoning up their clothing. He tells other women he'll get to them as soon as he's done with another (referring to the haircut and subsequent sex) and we see a montage of him doing more such work, including shampoo or similar cream being squirted out of a bottle, and him letting some drop from his mouth down to the woman. There are more exaggerated views of the outside closet wall being rhythmically rattled (stuff falling off it, etc.) while there are sexual sounds emanating from inside it. We see Zohan shirtless during this montage, as well as him and various women coming out from the closet, including two women at once (suggesting a threesome), while he's seen behind a woman, and she or another licks some sort of cream off his nipples.
  • Zohan asks Claude "Did you make stinky (or sticky) with her?" (meaning sex), uses a made-up slang term for female genitals, and then gets Claude to join him in doing some clothed pelvic thrusting up against a reclined female customer (the joke being that Claude is apparently gay and not really into that with a woman).
  • Zohan tells Claude that his is big and that it doesn't get any bigger, so Claude looks down the front of Zohan's pants (we don't see anything), and replies it isn't that big. Zohan then clarifies he's referring to his "bush" (pubic hair) and adds that it gives women a cushion (during sex).
  • While chatting with Dalia, Zohan says it's good to talk before the "bang boom" (sex), but Dalia says there won't be any of that. Nevertheless, he comments on "tapping" her so hard that his "stitzel" (or something close to that, meaning his penis) will come out her "poopa" (or something close to that, meaning her anus).
  • Zohan makes a sexual remark about having to do something first with a customer, but it seems he can't achieve an erection with an older woman. He's shirtless and tells her she has the flexibility of a circus freak. She slaps him, and thinking that might work in arousing him, he has her do that again, but it doesn't do the trick.
  • Zohan exposes himself to a doctor about his erectile dysfunction (we don't see anything), and the doc comments that the "bush" (pubic hair) might be strangling it (his penis).
  • There are comments about Zohan's "peepee" and erectile issues, with Gail saying his "hog" is telling him something (that he's love with Dalia and thus can only be aroused by her).
  • Dalia shows some cleavage, and Zohan realizes he got his erection back. He tells her that he can't make "stinky" (or "sticky") with anyone else but her and "I'll only be stiff with you." A made-up slang term for male genitals is used, and we see two older women in the beauty salon waiting for him, one dressed in leather and the other somewhat like a French maid.
  • About Neosporin, Gail says she uses it for cuts and genital sores.
  • We see Oori kissing on Gail's neck, ear, and clothed chest, making Michael uncomfortable.
  • An executive comments about having sex, while Walbridge states that his girlfriend has the perfect "ass to chest" ratio.
  • Various men discuss doing the "stinky" (or "sticky") with Laura Bush, Hilary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton.
  • There's a comment about a woman's "ass" and that she isn't "getting any."
  • Salim tries to negotiate with The Phantom, eventually asking if he can sleep with one of his wives. The Phantom says no, so Salim asks about one giving him what's presumably oral sex (he uses a slang term for that), and The Phantom agrees.
  • Zohan says something about making bang-boom (having sex).
  • We see a huge pile of women waking up and then getting off from being on top of The Phantom.
  • Gail comments on Zohan being uncircumcised and the phrase "Zo-hard" is used. He's then seated and holding a cup of coffee/tea by his clothed crotch when Gail comes over and dips a pastry down into that. A comment is then made about having a woman "fall head over t*ts for me."
  • As Zohan waves goodbye with his hand, we see a similar back and forth motion from his crotch area under his pants.
  • We see miscellaneous cleavage.
  • The real Mariah Carey shows cleavage, while we see the real John McEnroe shirtless.
  • Zohan shoots hummus through a fire hose to put out a fire, and holds that between his legs simulating a penis and orgasm.
  • When The Phantom realizes Dalia is seeing Zohan, he asks her, "You're tapping the Zohan?" but she says she isn't.
  • After Salim expresses his adoration for her, the real Mariah Carey says, "I love you too horny little man."
  • When a redneck is unexpectedly blown into a get-together, the real George Takei enthusiastically/suggestively says hello (with the joke being that Takei is gay).
  • The Phantom and Zohan join forces to perform an ancient chant that blows out street lights and store-front windows, and causes Walbridge's girlfriend's breast implants to deflate, thus eliminating her busty appearance (and leaving him dismayed).
  • Michael makes some comment about rather be licking something off melons (breasts) and there's talk of waxing nipples, and a slap to the face.
  • SMOKING
  • None.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • When Zohan confesses that he wants to be a hairdresser rather than an anti-terrorism commando, his parents laugh at the thought of that, with his father commenting on him being a "faggela" (or something close to that, a derivation of "fag").
  • A cabbie (Chris Rock) talks of his brothers and sisters being hacked to death, but this is played for comedy rather than tense family realism.
  • Repeated sightings of Zohan fooling around with his mom make Michael uncomfortable.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • The long-standing conflict between Arabs and Jews, particularly in the Middle East.
  • There's brief talk of the Six Day War.
  • Pursuing one's dreams.
  • When Zohan confesses that he wants to be a hairdresser rather than an anti-terrorism commando, his parents laugh at the thought of that, with his father commenting on him being a "faggela" (or something close to that, a derivation of "fag").
  • Talk of failed dreams for foreigners who came to America to pursue them.
  • VIOLENCE
  • All of the following is played for action and/or comedy and not graphic realism.
  • After defeating some muscle-bound men in tug of war, Zohan does the same to a large bull, pulling it into a pit.
  • In anger, Zohan kicks the chair in front of him, sending it and the man in it across the room. The latter slams into a desk or table that collapses from the impact, with some sparks shooting out from that.
  • After diving through a window, Zohan kicks through a wall to hit a villain and then kicks another to the far wall. He then strikes another, followed by a villain shooting at him, but he catches the bullet in his hand and nose before kicking that person over a railing to the floor/ground below. Another villain then comes at Zohan with a sword. He avoids the blade and then kicks that man.
  • We see The Phantom standing upside down on a ceiling and he then scurries away across that, diving and breaking through a window to escape. Zohan then dives through a window (breaking it) to give chase. The Phantom then fires a missile at Zohan who cartwheels out of the way, immediately followed by a large explosion behind him. Local kids then throw rocks at Zohan, but he catches and molds them into the rock equivalent of a balloon animal.
  • Trying to get away from Zohan, The Phantom pushes a man off his jet ski and then takes off on it. Swimming like a dolphin, Zohan catches up and grabs the jet ski, causing The Phantom to fly through the air and land in the water. He then knocks a guy from his kayak to take that and then repeatedly strikes Zohan with an oar, but it does no harm.
  • To prove how tough he is, The Phantom places a small fish on his neck where it bites him. To compete, Zohan drops that or a similar fish down the front of his own pants (we don't see the contact, but The Phantom does and winces at that view).
  • The Phantom throws a grenade at Zohan, and the two then proceed to use paddles to knock it back and forth to/from each other, with it exploding nearby them. No one is harmed, but Zohan fakes his own death so that he can leave and head to the U.S. to pursue his dream.
  • There's a traffic accident between a car driver and Michael on his bike, with that man taking Michael's bike and throwing it into a trashcan. Zohan then intervenes, and when the man continues to be a jerk, Zohan grabs him by the pinky and causes him a great deal of pain. He then repeatedly kicks him (played for exaggerated comedy with the two standing close, but Zohan's feet somehow popping up and kicking the man in the face). We next see that Zohan has twisted the man into a pretzel shape.
  • To convince a kid to stop squirming while getting a haircut, Zohan tells him about the possibility of cutting the jugular and all of the potential resultant blood. When that just gets the kid crying, Zohan pinches his neck and the boy slumps forward unconscious.
  • In a commercial for The Phantom's restaurant, we see small military action figures, with the one representing The Phantom behind the bent over one representing Zohan that then blows up.
  • We see Zohan's memory of when his hand was cut off by bad guys, but it managed to crawl across the floor, leap up into the air, and stab the bad guy, killing him (no blood).
  • As self-punishment, Zohan stabs a pair of scissors down into his clothed leg (no blood).
  • There's a flashback to Salim throwing his shoe at Zohan and then spitting at him. We then see Salim's point of view as Zohan bangs him to the ground.
  • Zohan and Oori juggle a cat on and back and forth between their feet (like hacky-sack), eventually joined by Michael (the cat doesn't seem to mind -- thus kids might be enticed to try the same).
  • A redneck pulls a switchblade, followed by Zohan hitting and kicking him and two other men in rapid speed, with Zohan's night-watch companion suddenly getting brave and kicking one downed man when he no longer poses a threat.
  • In a training montage where he hits various inanimate objects, The Phantom also punches a live cow that's hanging upside down.
  • A Molotov cocktail or something similar is thrown to a shop, catching it on fire.
  • The Phantom punches Zohan and then hits him twice on the face with a cane, but Zohan won't fight back.
  • Another Molotov cocktail or similar item is thrown into another shop, catching it on fire.
  • Zohan and The Phantom join forces to fight various rednecks, with punching and kicking, as well as Zohan banging two of their heads together.
  • A redneck threatens to blow up a puppy (and surroundings) with several sticks of dynamite. The Phantom and Zohan join forces to perform an ancient chant that blows out street lights and store-front windows, causes some explosions, and blows the redneck up into an apartment.
