QUICK TAKE:
Romantic Comedy: After a drunken night in Vegas results in them impulsively getting married, an unemployed man and a recently dumped Wall Street worker are forced to spend six months together as husband and wife, all in order to split the $3 million they won from a slot machine.
PLOT:
Things seem to be going great for Joy McNally (CAMERON DIAZ). Not only does she have a serious boyfriend in Mason (JASON SUDEIKIS) and is waiting for them to set a wedding date, she's also vying with coworker Chong (MICHELLE KRUSIEC) for a big promotion at a Wall Street firm run by their boss, Richard Banger (DENNIS FARINA). And then the unexpected happens when Mason suddenly dumps her. In response, she takes his birthday present of a Vegas trip and heads to Sin City with her best friend, bartender Tipper (LAKE BELL).

They're not the only ones headed there, however, as wood craftsman Jack Fuller (ASHTON KUTCHER) has finally been fired from his job by his boss who also happens to be his father, Jack Fuller Sr. (TREAT WILLIAMS). Along with wife, Judy (DEIRDRE O'CONNELL), he's upset that his young adult son can't commit himself to and/or complete anything. Now unemployed, Jack and his best friend, incompetent lawyer Hater (ROB CORDDRY), opt for a Vegas trip to get away from it all.

The four accidentally end up booked in the same hotel room, and after meeting that way, end up partying all night. The next morning, Joy wakes up in Jack's bed and learns to her horror that they got married the night before in a drunken stupor. They agree that was a mistake and quickly having a falling out, but then find themselves in an unusual situation when he puts the quarter she gave him into a slot machine that results in a $3 million payout.

Unable to agree on who should get the money, the two end up in court where the judge (DENNIS MILLER) decides their punishment should be having to live together as husband and wife for six months. Not only that, but they must also attend marriage counseling overseen by Dr. Twitchell (QUEEN LATIFAH).

The two aren't happy with the arrangement, but decide they can put up with anything for their half of the earnings. With encouragement from their friends, however, they separately decide to sabotage the other in terms of being a good and faithful spouse. From that point on, and using various tactics, the unlikely couple must contend with such ploys, all while trying to figure out how to live together.

WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For some sexual and crude content, and language, including a drug reference.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • ASHTON KUTCHER plays a wood craftsman who's fired from his job by his dad/boss. Known for being unable to commit and carry anything through to completion, he goes to Vegas for fun and ends up drunkenly marrying Joy (and has sex with her). Knowing he made a mistake, he's prepared for a quickie divorce when the two win $3 million from a slot machine and are then legally forced to live together as spouses in order to eventually split their earnings. He drinks a lot, uses some profanity, has sex with another woman, and eventually finds himself falling for Joy after repeatedly trying to get her to goof up in their forced marriage.
  • CAMERON DIAZ plays a driven woman who works for a Wall Street firm and is gunning for a big promotion, but is thrown for a loop when her boyfriend unexpectedly dumps her. She drinks in various scenes, drunkenly has sex with and then marries Jack, but like him, otherwise despises her new spouse. That's especially true when they're forced to be husband and wife for six months in order to split their casino millions. She also uses profanity and similarly tries to get him to slip up as the husband (so that he'll forfeit the money over to her).
  • ROB CORDDRY plays Jack's best friend, an incompetent lawyer who goes to Vegas with him and apparently had a drunken fling with Tipper. He uses profanity, drinks, likes to party, and tries to give advice to Jack about how to get Joy to trip up in their marriage.
  • LAKE BELL plays Joy's best friend, a bartender who went to Vegas with her and apparently had a drunken fling with Hater, but now despises him and makes no bones about that. She drinks and has a desire for hitting men in the crotch (and does that to Mason late in the film).
  • JASON SUDEIKIS plays Joy's serious boyfriend who breaks up with her due to her intensity and seeming inability to let loose and have fun. He uses some profanity.
  • TREAT WILLIAMS plays Jack's dad and former boss who fires him for being unable to carry through (and is concerned about that for Jack's life in general). He drinks a bit.
  • DEIRDRE O'CONNELL plays his wife.
  • MICHELLE KRUSIEC plays Joy's coworker and rival for a big promotion.
  • DENNIS FARINA plays their somewhat unconventional boss who favors Joy when it appears she's loosening up. He drinks some, uses some strong language, and borders on sexual harassment with his behavior toward Joy.
  • QUEEN LATIFAH plays the marriage counselor who sees Joy and Jack and briefly uses profanity.
  • DENNIS MILLER plays the highly opinionated judge who orders that Joy and Jack live together for six months as husband and wife.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this romantic comedy that's been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of 1 possible "f" word, along with other variations (some bleeped out, some said as "F-ing") as well as at least 5 "s" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue is present, as are various views of couples fooling around (no explicit nudity), with off-screen sex heavily suggested. Men and women are also seen in various revealing stages of dress/undress.

Comedy-based violence includes the striking of others (including women hitting men in the crotch), while various characters have varying degrees of bad attitudes (all played for comedy). All sorts of potentially imitative behavior is present, as is a great deal of drinking and intoxication, while a brief drug reference is made. Crude humor is also present, as are tense family scenes.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there's a brief but full strobe effect in a club scene.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there's a spin around camera shot while Jack and Joy dance (thus making the background blur behind them).

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • At Mason's surprise party, Tipper asks Joy if they can start drinking, and Joy says of course.
  • Jack and Hater have beer in a bar where others drink. They then end up having a drinking contest and later appear intoxicated.
  • That scene is inter-cut with Joy and Tipper drinking shots in another locale where others also drink. They end up having a lot as well.
  • Miscellaneous people hold large, exaggerated drinks, as does Jack when he enters his room, while Hater says he'll have a vodka and scotch.
  • Jack and Hater have drinks in a limo, and then convince Joy and Tipper to join them for a drink. That turns into a night of drinking and partying, with lots of liquor consumed by them and others, with Joy and then someone else sliding down a bar counter. That drinking results in the two couples apparently having sex, as well as Joy and Jack getting married.
  • Joy uses a large knife to slice off and open a bottle of champagne (in one quick move).
  • About drinking the night before, Tipper states she threw up in her purse.
  • Champagne is opened and Hater laps at the neck of the bottle. We then see him guzzling down champagne from the bottle.
  • We see video of a drunken Jack and Joy, with Hater drunkenly chiming in, "We're all gonna get laid!"
  • To act like a good wife, Joy brings Jack a six-pack of beer.
  • Joy notes the bar in the middle of Jack's living room, all while he and Hater have beer.
  • A remake of the Huey Lewis song repeats the intro line "I want a new drug."
  • Women show up at Jack's place with wine, and we then see a lot of drinking among them and others that Jack invites over. Later, Jack and Joy have beer, while Joy tells a group of women to do whatever they need to get into Jack's pants, adding that if they get him drunk "it (his penis) will fall right out."
  • A guy at a party shows Joy that he can put the top and part of a bottle's neck into his mouth/throat.
  • We see Jack, Hater and a friend with brown paper bags in front of them in public.
  • While racing to get to their counselor, Joy grabs a stranger's glass of champagne in the park and gulps it down.
  • Joy has wine with Jack's parents, while she hands a bottle of beer to him when he arrives.
  • Hater pours some beer into a mixer, blending it with something else.
  • Thinking Jack is a waiter, Mason orders a drink from him.
  • To make Mason believe that Joy has loosened up and changed, Jack tells Mason that she bought his uncle a bag of weed for his party.
  • Mason asks Joy if she wants to go have some vino, but she declines the offer.
  • People drink at a reception, including Jack, Joy and Richard who all down shots. Joy then opens a bottle of champagne using her knife trick, and then pours some for Jack and Richard. Later, as Jack and Joy walk along outside, both drink from that or another open bottle of champagne.
  • Chong tries Joy's knife to open a bottle of champagne trick, but the bottle shatters.
  • Various people drink in Jack's apartment, including him and Hater.

  • About drinking the night before, Tipper states she threw up in her purse.
  • To act like a good husband, Jack offers to buy Joy some Tampax.
  • Joy reacts in disgust to seeing hair all over Jack's toilet, sink and overall bathroom.
  • Jack has to urinate, but Joy won't relinquish the bathroom. Thus, he urinates in the kitchen sink and we see his urine stream that he sprays all over the sink once Joy comes out, telling her it's her day on the dishes.
  • Joy mentions Jack making her want to vomit in her nose.
  • Jack needs to use the bathroom, and Joy tells him to use his special one (referring to the above peeing in the kitchen sink scene).
  • Joy complains to Dr. Twitchell about Jack previously peeing in the sink.
  • To give Jack a black eye (to make it appear as if Joy did it), Hater slaps and then punches him. Later, we see video playback of Hater and another friend whacking on Jack, and then him having that black eye.

  • With them not getting along, Hater jokingly introduces Tipper as his lesbian sister.
  • Hater suddenly grabs something Tipper is eating for breakfast and squeezes it in his hand.

  • We see Tipper in her bra and panties in the bathroom while Joy is in the shower (we don't see anything). In the adjoining room, Hater removes his pants and we see him in his boxers and shirt. He then walks in on Tipper (not realizing she and Joy are in that same bathroom), resulting in the women screaming, hitting Hater, and then ending up straddling him and Jack on beds (in a controlling and not sexual way). Seeing the feather boa that Jack playfully has around his neck, Joy is then relieved and states, "It's okay, they're gay."
  • About Hater, Tipper sarcastically tells Jack that his buddy "wouldn't know a good time if it sat on his face" (a male to female oral sex reference). Tipper is then referred to as a prostitute and "skank." As they part ways, Joy sarcastically responds by telling the guys to use a condom.

  • Joy shows some cleavage.
  • Jack puts his hand down the front of his pants while watching TV, scratches or realigns himself, and then reaches over and puts his hand in Joy's large bowl of popcorn. • Jack complains to Hater that he hasn't had sex in a long time and that he needs to, adding that he's good at it.
  • Tipper convinces Joy that they need to get Jack to cheat on her (in order to prove he failed at his marriage so that the judge will award her all of the casino winnings). We then see two sexy women show up at Jack's door with wine, followed by other such women, some of whom show cleavage. After Hater convinces Jack that it's a trap, he later comments about Joy being the "chick" who's the reason he's not having a "six-way" (sex with those women) right now. Seeing that Jack isn't biting, Joy states they should call in the "sluts," while a friend of Jack's refers to Joy as "F-ing hot." Joy then tells a group of women to do whatever they need to get into Jack's pants, adding that if they get him drunk "it (his penis) will fall right out." Cops then show up, but they turn out to be male and female strippers who quickly do their thing (ripping their clothes off) and we later see them simulating sex (standing, while scantly clad). • We hear Jack finishing a joke about a spaceman saying "I don't even have a vagina."
  • Hearing Richard Banger's name, Jack jokes that it's also "Dick Banger" and says that several times. In response, Richard refers to Jack as "jack-off" and says that several times. Later, Joy's coworkers all playfully chant "jack-off" when he wins an award.
  • Joy shows some cleavage in her strapless cocktail dress.
  • Jack and Joy passionately kiss while dancing.
  • Feeling romantic, Joy asks Jack for help unzipping her strapless cocktail dress. He does and both are aroused by this, but don't let the other know. As she walks into the bathroom, we see that dress open in the back, with the back of her bra showing. He then undresses down to his boxers and holds up her skimpy lingerie, but she then walks out wearing just a bustier and very small panties. Both get into their separate beds and anticipate the other joining them, but then appear frustrated and disappointed that it doesn't happen.
  • Joy and Jack passionately kiss while clothed and standing.
  • We see a flashback to Joy and Jack getting married, and both are quite intoxicated, which also holds true for Hater and Tipper who are fooling around in the background. The latter two are all over each other, with him on top of her, between her legs on a chair (no nudity), followed by a view of him shirtless in his boxers and her in what appears to be lingerie. As they all leave, he plants a kiss on the next bride-to-be.

Tipper then sprays something into Hater's eyes, followed by her and Joy repeatedly striking him, eventually pinning him to a bed. Joy then raises a lamp to strike him, but then throws that at Jack who ducks out of the way (the lamp hits the wall behind him). She then ends up pinning Jack to the bed, while Tipper still has Hater in that same girl on top position.
  • Being forced to live together as spouses, Jack forcibly kisses Joy and then grabs her clothed butt, followed by her forcibly grabbing his clothed crotch. He then takes her inside, but then purposefully drops her to the floor. Hater then tries to kiss Tipper, but she smacks his face.
  • To give Jack a black eye (to make it appear as if Joy did it), Hater slaps and then punches him. Later, we see video playback of Hater and another friend whacking on Jack, and then him having that black eye.
