QUICK TAKE:
Romantic Dramedy: Four long-time friends must deal with the highs and lows of their romantic relationships with the men in their lives.
PLOT:
It's been several years since we last saw New York friends Carrie Bradshaw (SARAH JESSICA PARKER), Samantha Jones (KIM CATTRALL), Charlotte York (KRISTIN DAVIS) and Miranda Hobbes (CYNTHIA NIXON), and they've all moved along in their personal and romantic lives.

For Brooklyn lawyer Miranda, that means balancing work with raising her son with husband Steve Brady (DAVID EIGENBERG). Charlotte is happily married to Harry Goldenblatt (EVAN HANDLER) and enjoying their adopted daughter, while Samantha is living in Los Angeles managing the career of her model boyfriend, Jerry "Smith" Jerrod (JASON LEWIS). And after having landed financier John James Preston, a.k.a. "Mr. Big" (CHRIS NOTH) for what appears to be the final time, Carrie is preparing to move into a new place with him.

The two eventually decide to get married, alternatively shocking and pleasing her close friends, but with their blessings and the help of friends Anthony Marentino (MARIO CANTONE) and Stanford Blatch (WILLIE GARSON), the preparations get under way.

But when things go awry, Carrie ends up in a funk, eventually hiring personal assistant Louise (JENNIFER HUDSON) to help sort out her belongings and life. From an unexpected pregnancy to infidelity and the temptation of a sexually active neighbor, Dante (GILLES MARINI), Carrie and her friends must then deal with their respective disappointments, surprises, insecurities, and the effect all of that has on their friendships.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of the now defunct HBO series, they probably will.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For strong sexual content, graphic nudity and language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • SARAH JESSICA PARKER plays a sex columnist turned novelist who thinks she's finally happy with Mr. Big, especially after they get a place together and decide to marry. She uses some profanity, drinks, and must contend with a big disappointment in her life, all while trying to help her friends deal with surprises in theirs.
  • KIM CATTRALL plays her friend, a former sex fiend who's now settled down with Smith in Los Angeles where she manages his career. Yet, she isn't pleased about her life taking a backseat to his, especially when his long hours leave her longing for more, resulting in a fantasy fixation with her neighbor Dante. She drinks, briefly smokes a cigar, and uses strong profanity.
  • KRISTIN DAVIS plays another friend who's happily married to Harry and enjoys raising their adopted daughter. When she learns she's pregnant, she must contend with that, all while trying to support her friends.
  • CYNTHIA NIXON plays the fourth friend of the bunch, a somewhat uptight Brooklyn lawyer who must deal with her husband cheating on her, and how that affects their raising of their son. She drinks and uses profanity.
  • CHRIS NOTH plays a New York financier who's finally settled down with Carrie and agrees to marry her, but then gets cold feet at the last moment. He briefly uses strong profanity, smokes a cigar, and drinks some.
  • JENNIFER HUDSON plays Carrie's new personal assistant who helps her sort out her belongings and personal life. She wears low-cut outfits, drinks a little, and uses some profanity.
  • DAVID EIGENBERG plays Miranda's husband who confesses to having an affair and then spends the rest of the time apologizing and trying to get back with her.
  • EVAN HANDLER plays Charlotte's loving husband.
  • JASON LEWIS plays Samantha's boyfriend, a model whose career is overshadowing her personal life.
  • GILLES MARINI plays their next-door neighbor who has sexual liaisons with many different women, including two at one time.

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated romantic dramedy. Profanity consists of at least 9 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are uttered. Sexually related dialogue is present, as are various sex encounters (with movement, nudity and sounds, including that featuring a threesome).

Nonsexual nudity (rear male and a brief genital view, female breasts, a fully nude woman barely covered by small pieces of sushi), scantly clad women and cleavage are also present, as is a running visual gag featuring a small dog humping various objects.

Various characters drink in many scenes, while there's brief smoking (mostly cigars in one scene). Tense family material occurs, mainly due to infidelity in a marriage, while other bad attitudes are present. There's brief crude humor, while some behavior might be enticing for some kids to imitate.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there's some of that from camera flashes at a fashion show.

  • SEX/NUDITY
  • We briefly see Carrie in her bra and panties.
  • The women admire the look of a guy on the street, but then see that he's gay as he meets another man and there's a brief grabbing of one's clothed butt.
  • During the opening credits, we see clips from various "Sex and the City" TV episodes, including Charlotte stating that her husband at the time "can't get it up." Samantha talks about a lover's "funky tasting spunk" (semen) and we see two different views of her having sex (a head and shoulders shot showing movement and her pleasured facial expression, the second with her on top of a guy, moving sexually). We also see Smith shirtless during this.
  • Big playfully slaps Carrie on her clothed butt.
  • Samantha shows varying amounts of cleavage (usually a significant amount) throughout the film in various outfits, which also holds true for Louise, while Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte also show some cleavage, but not as much as their counterparts.
  • We see modeling photos of Smith where he's shirtless.
  • Carrie climbs into bed with Big wearing panties and a camisole, while his pajama top is open, but nothing sexual occurs.
  • We see Steve thrusting on top of Miranda, with him telling her not to "come" yet and for her to get on top, but she says, "Let's get it over with" (both have their tops on). That ruins the mood (they argue about the amount of sex they have) and as he gets up and walks out of the room, we see his bare butt.
  • The women talk about how much sex they have, but to keep the conversation somewhat clean in front of a child, they refer to sex as coloring. Samantha states that she likes to color and would color all of the time. Miranda then talks about the above sex scene with Steve and starts to reference her pending orgasm when Samantha chimes in "come," adding that there's no color equivalent for that word. Charlotte says that she and Harry have sex two to three times a week, while Miranda says it had been six months and that it's just been a dry spell (with Samantha sarcastically replying, "I bet"). Carrie won't say how many times she and Big have sex, but she playfully says that when he "colors," he rarely stays inside the lines.
  • Carrie and Big passionately kiss.
  • While on the phone with one of her friends, Samantha notes Smith walking up with what appears to be a large erection in his shorts or underwear. She says she has to go as "something came up," but then discovers that it's a long jewelry box he playfully had placed there. She's pleased and says that her gift to him is a little more oral and starts to go down toward his crotch. He stops her, however, saying he needs to go to bed to get rest for work, but she complains that this is how it starts (of going down to having sex just 3 or 4 times a week).
  • Samantha spots Dante having sex with a young woman who's on top of him, followed by them having sex standing up (bare breasts, his bare butt, movement, and related sounds), followed by another standing encounter the following night.
  • During a montage of trying on old dresses, etc. we see Carrie in a very tight and formfitting short one (with the camera panning her body from the rear in that).
  • The song "Walk This Way" has lines about a "backseat lover" and more.
  • We see Harry on top of Charlotte, having sex and making out, while hearing Carrie's voice over narration that Harry and Charlotte made love four times that week.
  • An old style painting shows male full frontal nudity (seen in close-up).
  • Samantha briefly comments on the "hot makeup sex" after a breakup.
  • After hearing the women talking about sex, Charlotte's young daughter repeats the word "sex."
  • Samantha comments on Miranda's slightly visible pubic hair along the edges of her bathing suit, saying that if it gets any thicker "you won't be able to find it" (presumably referring to her genitals).
  • When Miranda complains that both the good and bad guys "screw you" (non-sexually), Samantha sarcastically adds that the rest of the guys don't know how "to screw you" (sexually).
  • A miscellaneous couple makes out in a restaurant.
  • We see Charlotte in a sports bra.
  • We see Charlotte showering after exercising, and see her bare back and brief/partial views of her bare breasts (the view of her lower half is blocked).
  • Seeing a man staring at her abundant cleavage, Louise tells him, "Ain't nothing in there for you."
  • We see Smith on top of Samantha as they finish having sex. She says that was "hot," but he replies that she seems kind of distant. She then replies to him, "Distant? You're still inside me." We then see them side by side under the sheets, with that pulled up over her chest.
  • Samantha refers to Dante as "sex on a stick" and adds that he has sex every night with a different woman.
  • We see Dante shirtless as a bikini-clad young woman jumps up on him.
  • Samantha watches as Dante starts to strip out of his surfing wet suit (only the top half comes off).
  • Samantha sees an adoption-ready small dog humping a toy and decides it's the pet for her.
  • Carrie, via voice over narration, comments that since Samantha "couldn't get off" (sexually), she got things instead.
  • About a late-night call Louise received (not heard), Carrie refers to that as a "booty call" and several other references to that term are made.
  • Stanford and Anthony briefly kiss at a New Year's Eve party.
  • We see Harry on top of Charlotte and they passionately kiss. Elsewhere, we see Smith and Samantha doing the same, while her dog is seen humping a toy.
  • We briefly see a lot of hip on a female model as she struts down a runway.
  • Samantha leaves Smith a phone message that she'll be naked with sushi placed on her body waiting for him when he gets home. We then see her lying on a table, fully nude, with pieces of sushi strategically placed over her nipples and crotch area. But he doesn't arrive in time, so nothing happens. However, she does hear sexual sounds from next door and sees Dante leaning over a nude woman, kissing her bare chest while between her legs. A second woman then pops up from behind Dante (meaning it's a threesome).
  • Miranda and Steve passionately kiss when they get back together. We next see them kneeling together on a bed, with him groping her bare breasts and other skin from behind her as they have sex in that position (with related sounds).
  • Samantha walks up in a bathing suit skirt and bikini top and follows her dog that's gone over to Dante's house by mistake. There, she spots him taking a shower, fully nude (seen in slow motion). We see his bare butt and then a very brief and partial view of his penis as he turns toward her. She apologizes, "I'm sorry, my dog ran up on your d*ck, deck," and he invites her to join him, but she scoops up her dog (humping a towel) and hurries off (so that she doesn't cheat on Smith). Later, and seeing Samantha's pudgy belly protruding from her under her shirt, Anthony exclaims, "Mother of God, what's with the gut?" She states that she eats so she won't cheat on Smith. When sarcastically asked, "What do you not eat?" she dejectedly replies, "Dante's d*ck."
  • We see Samantha's dog humping a pillow.
  • A young girl tells Louise, "That dress makes your boobies look big."
  • Big and Carrie passionately kiss, and we next seem them, clothed, lying on the carpeted floor of their former closet (sex is implied). She asks if this was his idea when he had that area carpeted, but he says he wishes he could be noted as being that good of a planner.
  • SMOKING
  • Big, Samantha, Harry and Smith all smoke cigars outside a rehearsal dinner, while Stanford smokes a cigarette once.
  • During a montage of trying on old dresses, etc. we see Carrie make a smoking gesture (as she smoked back on the TV show).
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • Steve admits to Miranda that he had sex with someone else. This puts a tremendous strain on their marriage (played out in various scenes), with her then moving out and the two splitting custody of their young child. She won't forgive him, and the two eventually end up in marriage therapy.
  • Having second thoughts and not wanting to have his third marriage end like the first two, Big can't go through with his wedding to Carrie, and leaves moments before their wedding (thus jilting and embarrassing her).
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Carrie's comment that people come to New York City for two things: Labels (as in fashion) and love.
  • Whether the film plays up stereotypes of women as neurotic and fashion-obsessed narcissists or is a realistic portrayal.

  • Miranda commenting that the only Halloween costumes for women their age are witches and sex kittens.
  • Charlotte being worried that something will go wrong with her pregnancy.
