QUICK TAKE:
Drama/Action: A British secret agent goes on a vendetta as he tries to find those responsible for his girlfriend's death while also dealing with a business-minded criminal.
PLOT:
Following the recent death of the woman he loved, British secret agent James Bond (DANIEL CRAIG) wants to find out who's responsible, and has brought in Mr. White (JESPER CHRISTENSEN) for questioning in front of Bond's boss, M (JUDI DENCH). Her bodyguard, however, turns on her and the others, allowing White to escape and making the Brits realize they're up against a new and apparently well-heeled criminal organization.

Some research leads Bond to Haiti where he takes out a bad guy who was to meet the alluring Camille (OLGA KURYLENKO) who's none too happy to realize she's been targeted by her lover, businessman Dominic Greene (MATHIEU AMALRIC), for termination. He's in cahoots with deposed General Medrano (JOAQUIN COSIO) for a lucrative land deal, but Camille wants the general for her own reasons.

While CIA agents Felix Leiter (JEFFREY WRIGHT) and Gregg Beam (DAVID HARBOUR) are working undercover on Dominic, Bond must contend with Agent Fields (GEMMA ARTERTON) who's arrived to escort him back home -- what with him going rogue on his handlers -- while he enlists the aide of fellow agent Rene Mathis (GIANCARLO GIANNINI) for help.

As Bond and Camille become unlikely partners, the two proceed on their collective and individual vendettas against those who wronged them in the past.

CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • DANIEL CRAIG plays a British secret agent who's gone rogue on his handlers, including M, while on a personal vendetta to find who killed the love of his life as well as disrupt the dealings of a newly discovered criminal empire. While doing so, he beats up and murders those in his way, while also apparently sleeping with Fields, and he drinks some.
  • OLGA KURYLENKO plays an alluring woman he meets who's on her own vendetta against General Medrano and will do most anything to get to him, including sleeping with Dominic.
  • MATHIEU AMALRIC plays a villainous businessman who uses his company as a front for criminal activity. He uses some profanity, apparently slept with Camille before the story starts, and is responsible for the deaths and attempted murders of others.
  • JUDI DENCH plays Bond's boss who wants to get to the bottom of this newly discovered criminal empire, but isn't pleased by the way Bond is operating and thus tries to shut him down. She uses some profanity.
  • JOAQUIN COSIO plays a deposed general who's in cahoots with Dominic, reportedly did bad things to Camille's family in the past, and wants to do the same to her now.
  • GIANCARLO GIANNINI plays a former agent who reluctantly assists Bond.
  • GEMMA ARTERTON plays an agent sent to bring Bond back home, but apparently ends up sleeping with him.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
Here's a brief summary of the content found in this drama/action pic that's been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of at least 3 "s" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Some sexually related dialogue is present, an unmarried adult couple briefly fools around (with sex implied) and other sex in discussed, while a fully nude (and dead) women (covered in pitch black oil) lies face down on a bed. The opening title sequence has the usual Bond visuals of mostly silhouetted and shapely female figures, and some scantly clad people (male and female) are seen.

Violence consists of deaths via various means, brutal fighting, and intense action sequences. Some of that has bloody results, while those violent scenes and some moments of potential peril might be unsettling and/or suspenseful to some viewers. The various stunts and action might be enticing for some kids to imitate.

Various bad attitudes (including from the protagonist turning into a rogue killer) are present, as is some tense family material, while characters drink in several scenes and there's brief smoking.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there's some of that from flashing police lights.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there are bouncy views and other camera movement at various points in the film.

  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Camille sleeping with Dominic only to get to the general for revenge.
  • Revenge and how that motivates and drives people.
  • Secret government agents.
  • How the Bond films have changed over the years.
  • VIOLENCE
  • In a multi-minute sequence, a car chases after Bond in his car, firing a machine gun at him. During this chase, there are various close calls as well as some cars being hit and crashing. Some police join the chase, firing at the pursuing car, with those inside it firing back. That police car then has a bad crash, followed by rolling down an embankment. More shots are fired at Bond who finally gets the chance to shoot back, sending the pursuers flying off a cliff.
  • A double agent shoots and kills another and seemingly shoots M (although she's later seen okay) and briefly fights with Bond, followed by a foot chase. They end up in a crowd where the agent shoots at Bond but hits a bystander instead. The chase then continues through a building and then up onto roofs, with Bond nearly sliding off while jumping from one to another and landing hard when jumping off others onto balconies and such. They end up fighting again, falling together down through a glass atrium or something similar, with Bond dangling from some scaffolding inside that and avoiding sheets of glass that fall his way. They end up on ropes, swinging around the large room and fighting that way, with both trying to get to guns before the other. Bond swings by and finally grabs his and shoots up at the agent just in time (we don't see the deadly impact).
  • Bond breaks into a hotel room in Haiti where a man inside comes at him with a knife. That's followed by brutal fighting (including a head-butt, broken wrist, Bond being cut, smashing through two glass doors, etc.), resulting in the other man's death.
  • Camille picks up Bond (thinking he's someone else) and then tries to shoot him when she learns she's the target of the man who's really supposed to be there. Bond avoid that, gets out of the car, and then kicks a motorbike out from under a guy who was following them (striking him in the process).
  • Dominic points out a dead body underwater to Camille (seen from a distance, and presumably killed by him or on order by him).
  • Thinking he's rescuing Camille (who's onboard a boat with General Medrano and others, but is there to kill the general), Bond purposefully crashes his boat into General Medrano's. After getting her on his boat, the two fight, with General Medrano's men shooting machine guns at them. That's followed by a boat chase, with Camille using a large hook to hit a bad guy, while Bond hits two pursuing boats, with one's engine exploding and Camille being knocked out. A hook is placed on another pursuing boat that then comes to a sudden stop, yanking it up into the air and sending those onboard flying off.
  • We see a person who's unconscious from Bond knocking him out (not seen). Bond then grabs and hits another guy.
  • There's faked violence in an opera, including various people being shot and a knife being held on someone.
  • Bond holds his gun on one man who he then throws off the top of a building, with that person slamming into a car. When Dominic and his goons don't recognize that man, Dominic orders him to be killed (and one of his goons shoots the man dead).
  • After she reveals his ruse in front of his investors, Dominic pushes Camille back to a stone railing that partially cracks and threatens to give way. She's saved from that, with Fields purposefully tripping one of his goons, sending him tumbling down the stone steps.
  • Cops pull over Bond, have him open the trunk of his car, and find Mathis there. They pull their guns and then try to shoot Bond, hitting Mathis. Bond then grabs and shoots one of the men, and then shoots the second.
  • Another plane fires its machine guns at the plane carrying Bond and Camille. That's followed by a plane chase, with more bullets fired, but Bond eventually causes the pursuing plane to crash and explode. A chopper then fires machine guns at their plane. Bond then puts their plane into a steep climb, and he and Camille prepare to get out, but only she's wearing a parachute. The two then plummet, with Bond finally catching Camille and deploying her chute, but they still land quite hard, while the empty plane crashes and explodes.
  • We see a dead woman on a bed (from unseen violence), completely covered in pitch black oil.
  • Bond hits two agents who are escorting him in an elevator, leaving both of them unconscious.
  • Machine guns are fired at Bond. He hits one gunman and then flees.
  • Bond shoots several people, and a truck explodes. At the same time, General Medrano throws a woman down to a bed, possibly to attempt to rape her. Bond and others get into a gun battle, while Camille shoots one of General Medrano's guards and throws another over a balcony. She then ends up fighting General Medrano, while fuel cells or something similar in the desert hotel start exploding, causing lots of damage. General Medrano starts to strangle Camille, but she bites his face, and thus he throws her to a glass table that shatters beneath her. She then uses a resultant glass shard to slice his leg. As that occurs, Bond shoots down at Dominic through glass from above him, and the two then fight, including Dominic trying to hit Bond with an ax, but Bond gets the upper hand, grabbing Dominic by the hair. Meanwhile, Camille kicks General Medrano back and shoots him (we don't see that impact) in another part of the hotel where there are more explosions, fire and some structural collapse. Bond and Camille find themselves trapped by the growing fire, with Bond then shooting some sort of gas tank/canister to make it explode and blow open an escape path for them.
  • Bond throws Dominic to the desert floor and then leaves him there to die.
