QUICK TAKE:
Romantic Comedy: A dead woman's spirit tries to stop her former fiancé from dating a psychic who's fallen for him.
PLOT:
It was going to be a happy day for Kate Spencer (EVA LONGORIA PARKER) and Henry Miller (PAUL RUDD), but when an ice sculpture falls on her right before their wedding, she ends up in the hereafter where she misses some important information about her new role as a spirit.

A year later, Henry's sister, Chloe (LINDSAY SLOANE), is worried that the veterinarian hasn't moved on with his life. Accordingly, she drags him to see psychic Ashley (LAKE BELL), who also works as a caterer along with her gay assistant, Dan (JASON BIGGS). To help matters, Chloe secretly borrows Kate's diary and gives it to Ashley, in hopes that by reading it, she'll be able to make Henry believe she's talked to Kate and that it's okay for him to let go.

Ashley agrees because she thinks it will help, but she doesn't expect to end up falling for Henry. Dan doesn't think that's a good idea, but he's not the only one as Kate's spirit shows herself to Ashley, warning her to keep her distance. From that point on, Ashley must decide what to do, all as she and Henry become closer.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Those who are fans of romantic comedies and/or anyone in the cast might be interested.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For sexual content and language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • LAKE BELL plays a caterer who also works as a psychic. She agrees to fool Henry in the belief that it will help him let go of Kate, but doesn't anticipate falling for him. After she does, she must contend with Kate's spirit trying to dissuade her from continuing that budding relationship. She fools around with Henry, and briefly uses profanity.
  • PAUL RUDD plays a veterinarian who still hasn't moved on with his life a year after Kate's accidental death right before their wedding. He must contend with his sister trying to push him forward, all as he falls for Ashley.
  • EVA LONGORIA PARKER plays his former fiancée who died in an accident right before her wedding. Controlling both in life and death, she comes back in spirit form to try to break off the budding relationship between Henry and Ashley.
  • JASON BIGGS plays Ashley's somewhat clumsy and accident prone catering assistant, first believed to be gay, but he later proves otherwise.
  • LINDSAY SLOANE plays Henry's sister who wants him to move on with his life (a year after his fiancée's death), and thus hopes that Ashley can fool him into believing she's received a message from Kate.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this PG-13 rated romantic comedy. Profanity consists of at least 1 "s" word, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue is present, while a couple tries to have sex (making out, both on top of each other, but clothed, etc.) but a ghost keeps interrupting/distracting them.

A woman is seen in her bra and panties while changing, and barely covered in soap suds in the shower (and then with her hand/arm covering her bare breasts and a small towel around her waist rushing out of it), while varying amounts of cleavage are present. A character is noted as being gay, but that later turns out not to be true.

A woman is killed when an ice sculpture falls on her at her wedding, but we don't see the impact and it's all played for comedy. Some slapstick style material is also present. Various characters have varying degrees of bad attitudes, some drinking occurs (and there's talk of a death from drunk driving), while some behavior may be enticing for kids to imitate and crude humor is present.

Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

  • Chloe "borrows" the late Kate's diary, gives it to Ashley, and wants her to use it to try to prove to Henry that she's talked to Kate's spirit. Ashley agrees, thinking it will help Henry get on with his life, which is Chloe's intention.
  • Spoiler Alert: Dan suddenly kisses Ashley, and then admits that he isn't gay like she's thought for the past five years.

  • Ashley shows cleavage.
  • While changing clothes in front of Dan (who she thinks is gay), Ashley asks what makes telling a man you're a psychic means you want to sleep with them. Dan guesses that the guy figures she already knows (about that desire) since she's a psychic. As she changes clothes, we see her in her cleavage-revealing bra and a brief view of her in her panties. After getting dressed, she then shows Dan her clothed butt and asks, "How's my ass look in this?" (and we see close-up of that body part).
  • Chloe tells Henry she knows of a woman with huge natural breasts who likes to do various things, including performing oral sex (but she then says that last part is not true).
  • We see Ashley's lower bare back in her short blouse.
  • While channeling a demonic sounding voice while trying to intimidate Ashley into stopping seeing Henry (played for comedy), Kate tells Ashley that they saw what Ashley did in the shower last night, but then adds that it's nothing to be ashamed of.
  • We see Ashley in a tight and short dress that shows cleavage, and then a peek up that dress when she falls to the floor.
  • We see Ashley's bare back and the side of her soapsuds-covered bare breast in the shower. Kate does a fake announcement of there being an emergency evacuation, so we next see Ashley rushing out into the main gym with just a small towel around her hips and one arm barely covering her soapy breasts (thus drawing the amazed attention of all the men there).
  • Ashley passionately kisses Henry, and we then see them doing some more of that later.
  • Ashley complains to Kate that she had to show a roomful of guys her bare breasts because of her (referring to the above), but since Ashley is the only person who can see Kate, Ashley's neighbor sees her talking to no one.
  • Ashley shows some cleavage.
  • When they arrive at a hotel room together, Ashley playfully asks if Henry thought they'd come up there and never leave the room the entire time they're there. He says yes, she says that's awesome, and they kiss. She then goes into the bathroom and hears various farting sounds, not realizing it's Kate who's faking them. Ashley then sees Kate in the bathroom, with the latter telling the former, "You're not having sex with my husband" and "Don't do it." Ashley replies, "Oh, I'm doing it." Ashley then walks out into the bedroom in lingerie, and noting Henry's reaction, she says it looks even better on the floor. The two then passionately kiss on the bed, with Kate trying to distract Ashley (Henry can't see or hear Kate), including by floating above the bed, commenting on Ashley's former boyfriend's comments about her being a bad kisser and more. In response, Ashley tells Henry to talk dirty to her, and do so loudly, saying it turns her on. He then awkwardly says things like "You're a dirty girl." When that doesn't help her ignore Kate, she plays the radio loudly, saying it makes her "horny." During this, they kiss on the bed, alternating who's on top, and Ashley shows some cleavage during this, but sex doesn't occur.
  • Spoiler Alert: Dan suddenly kisses Ashley, and then admits that he isn't gay like she's thought for the past five years. He says he doesn't have sex with men, and they don't have sex with him. Saying he hates the shirt he's been wearing under false pretenses, he removes it (we see him shirtless), while Ashley is upset that they took bubble baths together (that prompts Dan to say she doesn't know how hard that was for him).
