QUICK TAKE:
Romantic Comedy: After realizing he actually loves his best friend, a serial lothario must come to grips with her asking him to be her maid of honor at her upcoming wedding.
PLOT:
Tom (PATRICK DEMPSEY) is a happy and rich bachelor who enjoys being single and the no-strings-attached sex that comes with that lifestyle. In fact, the inventor has been doing the lothario thing at least since college which is when he mistakenly met Hannah (MICHELLE MONAGHAN), who he believed was her roommate waiting to have sex with him. Tom and Hannah didn't sleep together, and despite their different lifestyles, became fast friends and have remained that way for the past ten years. In fact, they're so close that her mother, Joan (KATHLEEN QUINLAN), and his father, Thomas Sr. (SYDNEY POLLACK), are separately surprised the two have never become a couple.

That platonic relationship is rocked, however, when Hannah returns from a six-week working stint in Scotland with a new boyfriend, Colin (KEVIN McKIDD). Not only are they dating, but they're engaged to be married in just two weeks. And the timing couldn't be any worse as Tom was just about to tell her that he had finally realized he was in love with her.

To add insult to injury, she's asked him to be her maid of honor, much to the dismay of Melissa (BUSY PHILLIPPS) who had a brief fling with him in the past and has hated him ever since. Even so, she and fellow bridesmaids Stephanie (WHITNEY CUMMINGS) and Hilary (EMILY NELSON) want to make sure Hannah's day is special. Meanwhile, Tom's basketball buddies, Felix (KADEEM HARDISON), Dennis (CHRIS MESSINA) and Gary (RICHMOND ARQUETTE) see his wedding role as the best inside way to break up the pending nuptials so that he can have Hannah all for himself.

From that point on, Tom finds himself torn between helping his best friend and finding the best time to tell her how he actually feels about her.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're into romantic comedies and/or are fans of anyone in the cast, they might.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For sexual content and language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • PATRICK DEMPSEY plays a wealthy inventor who enjoys being a serial lothario (and thus beds various women), but he eventually realizes he's in love with his platonic friend, Hannah. He must then contend with her suddenly being engaged, and her asking him to be her maid of honor. He then sets out to disrupt the pending nuptials while trying to find the right time to tell her how he feels. He uses profanity and drinks.
  • MICHELLE MONAGHAN plays an art restoration specialist who's been his friend since they met in college. She puts up with him despite his womanizing ways, but then meets and becomes engaged to Colin. Once she learns of Tom's feelings for her, she's conflicted. She uses some profanity and drinks.
  • KEVIN McKIDD plays her new fiancÚ, a Scottish duke who's seemingly the perfect guy for her.
  • KADEEM HARDISON plays Tom's married friend who chides him about his womanizing ways, and then encourages him to break up Hannah and Colin's wedding so that Tom can have her.
  • CHRIS MESSINA and RICHMOND ARQUETTE play their other friends/basketball buddies who similarly encourage the attempted breakup.
  • BUSY PHILLIPPS plays Hannah's friend who drunkenly comes on to Tom wearing next to nothing despite hating him for a casual sexual encounter in their past. She uses brief profanity.
  • EMILY NELSON plays their friend who's trying to lose weight so that she can fit in her bridesmaid dress.
  • WHITNEY CUMMINGS plays their other friend, the remaining bridesmaid.
  • SYDNEY POLLACK plays Tom's dad who's working on his sixth marriage and thus isn't a good role model for long-term relationships. He marries much younger women (and must negotiate with his latest bride about the amount of weekly sex they'll have), uses profanity, and drinks some.
  • KATHLEEN QUINLAN plays Hannah's long-widowed mom.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this romantic comedy that's been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of a possible mouthed "f" word, while 7 "s" words, other expletives and various colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue and innuendo are present, off-screen sex is heavily suggested, women are seen in various revealing outfits (including lingerie) and all sorts of other sexual material (including men reacting in shock - we don't see anything -- to another man's genital size, and a running gag about a "sex toy" and a grandmother) is also present.

A character punches another and there's brief slapstick style material, while various characters have varying degrees of bad attitudes. Some of the behavior on display might be enticing for some kids to imitate, various characters drink (some to the point of intoxication, and one being sick from that), while some tense family material is also present.

Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there's a camera shot that spins around Hannah, Colin and Tom several times.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • People drink at a party set in the past, including Tom, while Hannah's roommate is later seen quite intoxicated (and she vomits from that).
  • People drink at a wedding reception, including Tom and Hannah who down shots of liquor, while Thomas Sr. comments that his new bride is as drunk as the night he met her. The next morning, Hannah tells Tom, "Let's get you another drink," with him replying he thinks he had too many.
  • Hannah and others have champagne on a plane.
  • Tom has a drink.
  • Hannah and others have wine.
  • Miscellaneous people drink in a bar where Hannah, Colin and Tom later have wine.
  • We hear that Colin's family owns the largest whiskey distillery in Scotland.
  • Tom's friends bring over beer to his place, but we don't see any being consumed (as they put together wedding shower baskets).
  • People have champagne at a wedding shower.
  • Tom and Thomas Sr. have drinks, with the latter pouring himself more whiskey.
  • Members of Colin's family have drinks.
  • Many people have wine with dinner.
  • Tom, Hannah and others have whiskey.
  • Miscellaneous people drink in a pub, as does Tom, as well as Hannah's bridesmaids who down shots and then ask for more. Later, Melissa drunkenly comes on to Tom and tells him to get her more whiskey.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • In the past, Hannah's roommate vomits into something from being drunk (we hear the action, but don't see any actual vomit).
  • Tom has Hannah try haggis at her wedding shower, and she spits it out once she learns what's in it.
  • We see a severed ram's head (no blood) in Colin's castle.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Tom is a serial womanizer, but is otherwise portrayed as a nice/charming guy (beyond trying to break up Hannah's wedding - listed below).
  • At his father's wedding reception, Tom points out a woman who's his (Tom's) stalker. After Tom pretends Hannah is his girlfriend, the woman storms out, pushing a man out of her way.
  • Hannah uses the term "emotional retard."
  • Tom's friends tell him he must sabotage Hannah's wedding from the inside if he truly loves and wants to be with her.
  • Melissa doesn't like Tom due to his sexual behavior toward her in the past. About him being the maid of honor, she sarcastically asks what his dress size is, followed by him asking the same about her jock strap.
  • Some viewers may take offense to comedy based around Hilary being overweight and stating that she wants to be in a bridesmaid dress several sizes too small for her. She later gets into that, but it rips along the side while she's seated, thus necessitating many safety pins to hold it together.
  • Playfully making a mock reference about an opposing male basketball player, Tom pulls out the front of his shirt with both hands to simulate a woman's breasts and nipples. He then makes fun of Colin's apparent ineptitude at playing basketball, telling a friend, "Guy's a chump."
  • One of Tom's friends, Dennis, doesn't want to help in assembling wedding shower baskets. Dennis states he can feel his sperm dying inside him, and that he's off to a strip club, telling the others to call him "when you find your balls."
  • Melissa suggests a certain "entertainer" to Tom for Hannah's wedding shower, but the woman turns out to be a sex toys/novelty saleswoman (Melissa did this to make Tom look bad).
  • While some viewers may see Tom's quest to tell Hannah how he feels about her as romantic, others might see it as having a bad attitude for trying to break up her pending wedding.
  • A woman in Colin's family, referring to Tom being the maid of honor, states, "Definitely gay."
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • None.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • We see an old painting that features a character (standing and alive) with several arrows in him.
  • Colin's mother shows Hannah video of Colin hunting for the food they're now eating. We hear the gunshot, but don't see any of the video.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "Oh sh*t," "(Total) bullsh*t," "I just finished working on his balls," "Whack off" (masturbate), "That monster thing of his" (penis), "I can feel my sperm dying inside me," "Oh yes, the fornicator," "Glow-in-the-dark thunder beads," "Dildo sales woman," "Let's put your whoring to good use," "Said by a p*ssy and used by p*ssies ever since," "Big p*ssy," "Go and get her, you p*ssy," "I need you to service me. Service me, bitch" (sexual), "Psycho blogger," "Emotional retard," "Tiny shorts guy," "Snaps to that," "MOH" (maid of honor), "Guy's a chump," "Jeez," "She freaked," "What the hell is this?" "Call me when you find your balls," "Comes damn close," "Definitely gay," "What an ass," "I'm so sorry I didn't kill anything for you," "What in the name of the wee man?" and "It sucks."
  • Tom jokingly climbs up onto a bridge railing and pretends he's going to jump.
  • Playfully making a mock reference about an opposing male basketball player, Tom pulls out the front of his shirt with both hands to simulate a woman's breasts and nipples.
  • Dennis playfully gives "the finger" to his friends back through a door as he leaves.
  • Tom juggles some plates in a store.
  • Tom tries to participate in a pole toss as part of some wedding games, but the huge pole accidentally goes backwards and smashes the roof and windshield of a parked car.
  • There's a bit where one of Colin's older relatives has a thick accent and repeatedly uses something close to "athole" with the film making it sound like "asshole."
  • JUMP SCENES
  • None.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • None.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • A song had what sounded like repeated uses of "nigga" in it (played at a wedding reception to the shock of those attending).
  • PROFANITY
  • What looked like at least 1 mouthed "f" word, 7 "s" words, 4 slang terms for sex ("laid," "do it" and "service me"), 6 slang term using female genitals ("p*ssy"), 3 asses (1 used with "hole," and 4 sound-alike words), 1 crap, 1 damn, 1 hell, 4 uses each of "God" and "Oh my God," 2 of "Oh God" and 1 use each of "For Christ's sakes," "Jesus" and "My God."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • We see some scantly clad women and miscellaneous making out at a party in the past, followed by young Tom wearing a Bill Clinton mask and Hannah's roommate wearing a Monica Lewinsky one. Impersonating his character, Tom tells the young woman her dress needs dry cleaning and delivers other brief bits of presidential innuendo. Moments later, he goes to her room and quickly undresses down to his boxers and gets into bed with a woman. But it turns out to be Hannah and not her roommate, and she hits him with a pillow and sprays perfume in his eyes. Later, he half-jokes that he has to be careful who he gets into bed with, while she comments that he's slept with half her floor (prompting him to reply that half of those on it are women). She then comments on his sports sex with girls like her roommate, adding that she (Hannah) would never have sex with someone like him. Hannah's drunken roommate then stumbles in, asking to see his penis (she slurs some slang term that doesn't make any sense), but then vomits, with Hannah sarcastically telling Tom that the roommate is all his (nothing else happens).
  • After Hannah tells Tom his hands are clammy, he replies that he can see through her shirt (as can we, but all we partially see is her bra beneath it, and nothing explicit).
  • Tom gets up from bed (in the morning) where we see his latest lover in some lingerie (that shows some cleavage), while he's shirtless. She asks what he's doing tonight, and he replies that he doesn't do "back to backs" (seeing the same woman two nights in a row). While coming on to him and cuddling up from behind as he sits on the bed, she suggestively asks "Isn't that what we did last night?" with him then explaining his rule. He then gets up and says he'll see her next week.
  • We see miscellaneous cleavage.
  • We see classic style statues that show male and female full frontal nudity. We then see an old painting that Hannah is restoring (the male figure appears nude -- albeit with a few arrows in his body) and the camera pans down the body where the shot makes it appear as if Hannah is performing oral sex on it (her head is at the crotch area, and she's moving a bit, thus creating that illusion). She then tells Tom that she's finished working on the painting figure's "balls."
  • Hannah tells Tom they both know he doesn't have to lie to get a woman in bed.
  • Hannah shows varying amounts of cleavage in various outfits throughout the film.
  • Tom wants to take Hannah as his date to his father's sixth wedding, with Hannah telling him to take "one of the girls you've been rubbing up against."
  • Thomas Sr.'s latest bride sits in a limo in a revealing wedding dress (showing lots of cleavage), negotiating through her lawyer how many times per week she'll have sex with Thomas Sr. (who's negotiating his end on the phone). Various numbers are thrown back and forth (she wants it low), with a comment about a "monthly BJ" (blow job), with the number four finally being agreed upon. After the wedding ceremony, the intoxicated young bride comes up to Tom, calls him "son," and says she'll spank him if he's a bad boy (and she playfully spanks his clothed butt). She then takes his hand and places it to her heart (doing a pseudo mom bit), thus placing his hand into her abundant cleavage.
  • About their first meeting back in college, Tom jokes that he was just trying to sleep with Hannah.
  • We see a nerdy-looking guy in small basketball shorts.
  • Tom and his friends (some married, some single) playfully debate being married vs. being single and having casual sex in the latter state. There are jokes about one's wife cutting off his "balls," while it's said of another that he has to "whack off" to the underwear section of some catalogue. The sexual use of "laid" is also used during this.
  • One of Tom's dates, showing some cleavage, kisses his bare back and playfully climbs all over him.
  • A woman shows cleavage.
  • Having come to the realization that he loves Hannah, Tom tells his male friends that maybe there's more to life than sleeping around, thus causing his single friends to react in shock.
  • We see Tom shirtless.
  • Melissa shows cleavage.
  • Melissa doesn't like Tom due to his sexual behavior toward her in the past. About him being the maid of honor, she sarcastically asks what his dress size is, followed by him asking the same about her jock strap.
  • There's talk of various things regarding Hannah's wedding and duties of the bridesmaids, including helping her with her lingerie selection for the wedding night.
  • Playfully making a mock reference about an opposing male basketball player, Tom pulls out the front of his shirt with both hands to simulate a woman's breasts and nipples.
  • We see Tom and his male friends shirtless as they prepare to shower in the locker room, but all are taken aback by the sight of Colin already showering. While we only see his bare chest, they all stare in shock at his crotch area (not seen), presumably due to his size. One makes a comment about what sounded like mad cow disease, while later someone mentions "that monster thing of his."
  • Colin and Hannah passionately kiss.
  • After stating that Tom is her maid of honor and not her fiancÚ, Hannah's reverend thinks Tom is gay and says they have gay and lesbian members in their church (and he then gives Tom a hug).
  • One of Tom's friends, Dennis, doesn't want to help in assembling wedding shower baskets (where one jokes that Hannah would have to wear one of the sleep masks to sleep with Tom). Dennis states he can feel his sperm dying inside him, and that he's off to a strip club, telling the others to call him "when you find your balls."
  • At Hannah's wedding shower, Joan comments on Tom having slept with their maid in the past, prompting her mother (Hannah's grandmother) to state, "Oh yes, the fornicator." The "entertainment" then turns out to be a pleasure aides saleswoman (much to the shock of everyone there), and she pulls out a pair of edible panties, throwing them to Hilary and stating, "You look hungry, snack on these." She then pulls out a string of vaginal beads that draw Hannah's grandmother's attention. The saleswoman says they're glow-in-the-dark thunder beads, and the grandmother asks where they go. We then see her wearing them as a necklace. Hannah is mad at Tom for this, and comments on the "dildo sales woman."
  • We see the cover of a bridal magazine that shows a topless model with her hand over her otherwise bare breast.
  • We see some of Tom's shirtless male friends.
  • Hannah asks Tom to help her pick out her wedding night lingerie, asking who's taken off more lingerie than him, and that they should "put your whoring to good use." Tom is uncomfortable with this in the store (where we see mannequins in all sorts of lingerie, as well as a photo of a shapely woman in a revealing bra and panties), but he sneaks a peek through a sheer curtain where he sees Hannah getting dressed (nothing explicit is seen). Hannah then comes out in a bustier (that reveals cleavage), panties and garters, and carries a riding crop. When Tom says she looks cute, she whacks him with the riding crop, stating she doesn't want to look cute on her wedding night.
  • Hannah's friends show cleavage.
  • We see Tom in a short kilt, and when he spins around, we briefly see a rear view of his underwear.
  • We see Hannah's grandmother wearing the aforementioned thunder beads as a necklace, and when she tells Hannah's reverend what they're called, he's taken aback.
  • Joan shows some cleavage.
  • As part of a wedding ritual, various men kiss Hannah and then put money into a pot for her. One of those men then playfully kisses various other men. Tom then passionately kisses Hannah.
  • Melissa drunkenly comes on to Tom, revealing herself in a skimpy bra and panties, telling him, "Let's do it again for old-timey sakes." She kisses and climbs on top of him, telling him, "I need you to service me. Service me, bitch." But he wants no part of this and pushes her off (especially after Hannah stops by and gets the wrong impression about what's occurring).
  • Hannah's bridesmaids show cleavage in their dresses.
  • Hilary's dress tears on the side and we briefly see the side of her bare hip.
  • Hannah and Tom passionately kiss at her pending wedding to Colin.
  • Hannah and Tom passionately kiss at a wedding.
  • We see Tom in just his pajama bottoms as he gets into bed with Hannah. He turns on the light and jokingly says he's doing so just to make sure he has the right woman, and we then see them kissing in bed while lying on their sides facing each other. That ends with him playfully saying, "Oh Monica" and her replying "Oh Bill" (references to the previous mask scene listed above).
  • SMOKING
  • There might be miscellaneous smoking in the background of a scene set in the past at a big college party.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • There's a brief reference to Hannah's father's funeral sometime in the past. Much later in the film, Hannah tells her mom she misses her dad, and her mom says she does as well.
  • We hear that Thomas Sr. is getting married for the sixth time, and later hear that he's divorcing that woman as well. He later laments letting Tom's mother go in the past.

  • At his father's wedding reception, Tom points out a woman who's his (Tom's) stalker. After Tom pretends Hannah is his girlfriend, the woman storms out, pushing a man out of her way.
  • Distracted by Hannah having a fiancÚ, Tom accidentally bumps into a waiter, causing both to fall and the things the waiter was carrying to break upon impact with the floor. Moments later, Tom suddenly gets up and accidentally hits that same waiter with the same results. Others must then restrain that waiter who tries to whack Tom with something (played for slapstick style laughs).
