QUICK TAKE:
Musical: Various high school students go through their senior year and try to figure out their futures, all while rehearsing for their big musical.
PLOT:
At Albuquerque's East High School, Troy Bolton (ZAC EFRON) is the big man on campus, not only due to him being the most popular student and star basketball player, but also because his girlfriend, Gabriella Montez (VANESSA HUDGENS), is beautiful and smart. Yet, their future together after high school seems uncertain, what with her planning to attend Stanford, while he's earmarked to play basketball at the University of Albuquerque alongside his best friend and current teammate Chad Danforth (CORBIN BLEU) who likes Gabriella's best friend, yearbook editor Taylor McKessie (MONIQUE COLEMAN).

Meanwhile, composer Kelsi Nielsen (OLESYA RULIN) has signed up them and others for the school's big year-end musical in order to keep the school's drama diva, Sharpay Evans (ASHLEY TISDALE) from taking over the show for herself. Jealous of Kelsi writing a duet for Troy and Gabriella, Sharpay enlists both her twin brother and the show's choreographer, Ryan (LUCAS GRABEEL), and foreign transfer student turned personal assistant, Tiara Gold (JEMMA McKENZIE-BROWN), to try to undermine the stars, all while drama teacher Ms. Darbus (ALYSON REED) tries to keep the show on schedule.

As the school and basketball torch are passed down to underclassmen such as Jimmy Zara (MATT PROKOP) and Donny Dion (JUSTIN MARTIN), Troy and Gabriella must figure out their collegiate and romantic futures, all as the high school musical gears up for its big debut.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of the first two "High School Musical" movies, they most definitely will.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: G
Presumably for not containing material to warrant a higher rating.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • ZAC EFRON plays the school's most popular student and star athlete who's deeply in love with Gabriella, and thus not crazy about being so far apart in their upcoming college days. Feeling that his collegiate future has already been predetermined for him through his dad and others' expectations of him attending and playing hoops for the local university, he must decide between that and an unexpected offer from Julliard.
  • VANESSA HUDGENS plays his girlfriend who's hesitant about telling him she might attend Stanford early and thus miss both the musical and school dance with him.
  • ASHLEY TISDALE plays the school's resident diva who thinks she's hot stuff both on and off the stage, and isn't shy about letting everyone know that. Jealous of Troy and Gabriella getting the limelight, she conspires against them.
  • LUCAS GRABEEL plays her twin brother, the show's choreographer and performer who's somewhat of her coconspirator.
  • CORBIN BLEU plays Troy's best friend and teammate on the basketball team who envisions the two of them carrying on the same while playing for and attending the local university. He's sweet on Taylor, but is nervous about asking her to the dance.
  • MONIQUE COLEMAN plays Gabriella's best friend, the yearbook editor who somewhat plays hard to get with Chad.
  • OLESYA RULIN plays the student composer for the musical.
  • JEMMA McKENZIE-BROWN plays a transfer student from London who becomes Sharpay's personal assistant, doing much of her dirty work for her, but is really just setting herself up for success.
  • MATT PROKOP plays a cocksure but still awkward underclassman who sees Troy as his role model and idol, both on the basketball court and theater stage.
  • ALYSON REED plays the drama teacher who tries to keep the show on track, all while giving advice to Troy to trust his instinct regarding his future.
  • JUSTIN MARTIN plays his friend and fellow underclassman.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
Here's a quick look at the content found in this G-rated musical. No profanity is present, but some colorful phrases are. Cleavage is seen in several scenes, the camera focuses on a high school girl's butt in her short skirt, and others are seen in similar somewhat skimpy attire, there's a brief kiss, and some boys are briefly seen wearing just towels wrapped around their waists.

Some bad attitudes are present, as is behavior (dance moves, etc.) and clothing choices (short skirts, etc.) that some kids might want to imitate.

Some characters hold tropical drinks in a musical number, but there's no consumption, while there's brief contact in a basketball game, and a father and son briefly have a disagreement over the latter's post-high school choices.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there's some of that during the opening basketball sequence, later from camera flashes, then from lightning, and finally near strobe intensity during a musical number.
