QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: After being mistaken for terrorists, two stoner buddies escape from Guantanamo Bay, return to the U.S., and travel across the country in hopes that the fiancé of one's ex-girlfriend can get them off the hook.
PLOT:
Harold Lee (JOHN CHO) and Kumar Patel (KAL PENN) are best friends who, having successfully scored a plethora of burgers at White Castle at the end of "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle," now have their sights set on Amsterdam. After all, it is the "weed capitol of the world" and that sounds good to these two stoners. Besides, it will help Kumar get over the fact that his ex-girlfriend, Vanessa (DANNEEL HARRIS), is now engaged to Colton (ERIC WINTER), while the girl of Harold's dreams, Maria (PAULA GARCÉS), just so happens also to be traveling to Amsterdam.

The two friends don't get there, however, due to an in-flight mishap where Kumar's smokeless bong is mistaken for a bomb and thus they're pegged as terrorists. As a result, they end up in Guantanamo Bay where overzealous Homeland Security chief Ron Fox (ROB CORDDRY) is ready to prosecute the heck out of them, much to the chagrin of Dr. Beecher (ROGER BART), a far more level-headed NSA official. Despite Fox's tactics, Harold & Kumar manage to escape during a prison break and catch a boat ride back to the U.S.

Once there, they realize the only person who can help them is Colton (due to his connections to the Bush White House), but he's about to marry Vanessa in Texas. From that point on, and with the help of various strangers and acquaintances, such as Neil Patrick Harris (NEIL PATRICK HARRIS), the two set off from Florida for the Lone Star State, all with Fox and his feds in hot pursuit.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of the first film, they probably will.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For strong crude and sexual content, graphic nudity, pervasive language and drug use.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • JOHN CHO plays a banker/stoner who's looking forward to the trip to Amsterdam, not only because drug use is legal there, but also due to Maria being there as well. He smokes pot, uses strong profanity, and spends most of the film perturbed at Kumar for screwing up their plans.
  • KAL PENN plays his friend, a fellow stoner and doctor whose obsession with drugs quickly undermines their trip and gets them in hot water with the feds. He does more outrageous and stupider things than his friend, but similarly smokes pot, uses strong profanity, and longs for Vanessa.
  • ROB CORDDRY plays a Homeland Security chief who's overzealous in his work and always uses racial and ethnic stereotypes while dealing with people. Fervently believing Harold & Kumar are terrorists, he won't stop at anything to capture and prosecute the two after they escape. He uses strong profanity.
  • ROGER BART plays his NSA counterpart, albeit in a subservient role, who's far more level-headed and realizes the two stoners are not terrorists. He uses some profanity.
  • NEIL PATRICK HARRIS plays himself, an actor who drinks, consumes hallucinogenic mushrooms, uses strong profanity, and is headed for the local brothel.
  • DANNEEL HARRIS plays Kumar's ex-girlfriend who's set to marry Colton, but seems to be having second thoughts, especially when he reprimands her for having some pot. She smokes that (also in flashback) and uses profanity.
  • ERIC WINTER plays her fiancé, a seemingly perfect young man, rich and handsome, but also somewhat controlling of her. He turns out to be a jerk later in the film, and uses strong profanity.
  • PAULA GARCÉS plays the stranger who Harold is enamored with, and she turns out to be a model. She briefly smokes pot.

Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this R rated comedy. Profanity consists of at least 131 "f" words (including in song lyrics), while many other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered.

All sorts of sexually related dialogue and some related song lyrics are present, as is nudity (bare butts of both sexes, pubic hair views of many women, one penis view, and bare-breasted women) and a comedy based sexual dream featuring a man, woman and a human-sized bag of pot (with three-way sex in a variety of positions). Other sexual material includes male prison guards forcing male prisoners to perform oral sex on them, two bare-breasted women making out, and a man masturbating (with the results hitting his face).

Comedy based violence includes a woman twice shooting a man with a shotgun (with bloody results), other implied deaths (including from falling from a plane sans parachute) and some fighting with and striking of others. A deer is shot and blood splatters onto a person's face.

Lots of drug use (pot and mushrooms) is present, as is some drinking (including with driving), while a minor character uses chew. Various bad attitudes are present, and some viewers might take offense with some of the comedy-based material. Crude and scatological material is also present, as are various instances of behavior that might be enticing for some kids to imitate.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • In a plane's bathroom, Kumar reveals to Harold his homemade, smokeless bong. Harold asks if he can't wait as they're headed to Amsterdam, "the weed capitol of the world." Kumar tries to light that bong, but the open door allows passengers to see him, and they think he's trying to light a bomb.
  • Miscellaneous people drink at a party.
  • We see a flashback to Vanessa introducing Kumar to smoking pot, including blowing such smoke into his mouth via a deep kiss.
  • We see miscellaneous guys on the street holding brown paper bags presumably containing bottles of alcohol.
  • A hunter invites the guys to join him and his wife for dinner, but then says they're going to have to get high first, opening a case containing all sorts of drugs. We then see the hunter smoking pot at the table.
  • The guys catch a ride with Neil who offers them hallucinogenic mushrooms. They decline that, but Neil eats some, followed by drinking beer and driving (Kumar also drinks), and then drinking straight from a bottle of whiskey. He then has several hallucinations featuring a unicorn.
  • Colton finds a joint in Vanessa's purse, reprimands her for that, and then tears it up, saying when he's tense, he snorts Zoloft. Later, however, she sneaks outside and retrieves another one she stashed under a rock. She then smokes that pot.
  • When a guard hears about Harold having weed, he enthusiastically asks about that, but Harold says that was on the other plane. Hatching an idea, however, Harold says he does have some, thus exciting the guard (but he pulls out mace instead).
  • About liking pot but not legalizing it and with the guys questioning him on that being hypocritical, President Bush asks one if he likes giving hand-jobs. The guy says no, but replies that he does like receiving them (after President Bush asks about that and then says "That makes you a f*cking hypocriticizer"). Bush then smokes pot and shares that with the guys, adding that he laced it with "blow" (cocaine).
  • Kumar, Harold, Vanessa and Maria all smoke pot in Amsterdam.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • As Harold showers, he hears loud and exaggerated diarrhea sounds. He then looks out to see Kumar sitting the toilet (and he comments on that being the "dump of all time"), followed by many more such sounds.
  • Harold has a slight cut on his head.
  • We hear Harold urinating in the plane's bathroom.
  • Kumar and Harold end up in a jail cell in Gitmo, and see a goat defecate on a pillow on the floor.
  • Harold urinates, but we don't see anything.
  • A guy on the phone tells Kumar that he "shtupped" some girl and that she gave him a "bloken." When Kumar asks what that is, the man says it's when a woman gives you head while you're on the toilet "taking a sh*t."
  • Harold & Kumar encounter a young, friendly deer in the woods when it's suddenly shot by a hunter, with blood and such matter splattering on Harold's face. The hunter then jams a large hunting knife into the dead deer, cuts it open and then tastes the blood from the blade.
  • Harold & Kumar end up shoving each other, followed by Harold striking Kumar hard enough (apparently in the crotch) to double him over and cause him to fart.
  • A Klan member states he has to "drain the main vein," not realizing Harold & Kumar are just on the other side of the log. We then see his urine stream falling between them, but when that man twists one way and then the other, his stream lands on both Harold and Kumar's heads.
  • A person wears a t-shirt that reads "I (heart) smegma."
  • Fox tears out a page about the 5th Amendment, puts it down and rubs inside the back of his pants, and then pulls it out to reveal a large fecal stain on the paper (to indicate what he thinks about that amendment).
  • We see a fresh and slightly bloody brand on a hooker's bare butt from where Neil just branded her.
  • A prostitute twice shoots Neil in the back with a shotgun, with some bloody results (played for laughs).
  • Harold twice strikes Colton, flooring him (with a resultant fart sound from the latter).
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • All of the following is played for comedy.
  • One of the guys wears a t-shirt that reads "no means yes," followed by "just kidding" on the other side.
  • Kumar accuses an airport security guard of being a racist (for pulling Kumar out of the line for his dark skin). When the guard says he's black, Kumar says his skin is barely that.
  • Some viewers might not like a visual joke when an older woman on a plane imagines Kumar as a terrorist with a long beard. He then makes a gesture with his hand of a plane going down, all while cackling like a madman.
  • About Kumar trying to smoke pot in a plane's bathroom, Harold asks, "Are you retarded?"
  • Spotting Harold (who's Korean), Fox asks what's up with the guy with the "weird eyes," adding, "Is he handicapped?"
  • Kumar and Harold meet real terrorists in Gitmo.
  • Male guards at Gitmo force male prisoners to perform oral sex on them.
  • About that, one of the guys asks the recipient guard if that makes the guard gay. The guard angrily responds no, that those performing that are "fags."
  • Some viewers might not like Fox holding up a picture of a little girl (equating her to America) and asking another man if he wants to see that girl raped and murdered. He then asks if that man wants to see America raped. When that man says no, Fox replies, "Then stop f*cking with me."
  • When Kumar's father informs Fox that he's Indian and not an Arab, Fox refers to him as "chief." That's followed by Fox using an interpreter to talk to Harold's American parents, and there's a reference to their "fake chon-chong language."
  • Trying to get info from a black man, Fox first aims his handgun at him, and then holds up a can of grape soda, as if that will be too tempting for the man to pass up.
  • Kumar jokes that there are probably at least two uncircumcised "d*cks" dangling in front of Maria's face, and then he then makes all sorts of exaggerated female to male oral sex gestures and sounds.
  • Harold & Kumar come across a Klan rally, with the leader asking at one point, "What the nigger was that?" With Harold & Kumar forced to don robes to prevent the others from seeing their faces, the leader then asks everyone to say what they did to a minority that day. When the guys are exposed, the Klansmen think they're Mexicans and chase after them.

  • Rather then help them out as promised, Colton turns in Harold & Kumar to the feds.
  • After Kumar says he loves Harold (meaning as a friend, and being sorry about their predicament), a male guard replies, "Queer."
  • Some viewers might not like the caricature portrayal of President Bush as smoking pot, using strong profanity, questioning his government, and then telling his father (over the phone), "F*ck you, dad, f*ck you."
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence" may be unsettling to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material, but no one else.
  • Harold & Kumar end up driving down an inner-city street at night, lost, and don't want to pass through a basketball game featuring various large black men. Harold then backs up, accidentally hits a fire hydrant, and the resultant water shorts out a man's portable radio. They then start approaching the two who flee in terror, but it turns out the men were just going to help them with their car.
  • Harold & Kumar end up hiding in a hunter and his wife's dark basement, only to hear sounds and then encounter their inbred son, a cyclops (played for suspense, then laughs).
  • GUNS/WEAPONS

  • A hand suddenly reaches out and grabs Kumar's.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • A bit of comedy-based, suspenseful music plays in a few scenes.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • Various songs had lyrics that we couldn't fully hear and/or understand, thus presenting the possibility of them potentially containing objectionable content. That said, we heard several that contained strong profanity (multiple uses of the "f" word, "p*ssy" and more), and sexually related material (what a male singer says is the amazed response when he drops his drawers; another comparing penis sizes using the word "d*ck"; one with the repeated line "Fooled around and fell in love"; another with sexual uses of "p*ssy").
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 131 "f" words (3 used with "mother," 1 used sexually as are the terms "shtupped" and "get it on"), 48 "s" words, 33 slang terms using male genitals ("c*ck," "d*ck" and "pr*ck"), 7 using female ones ("p*ssy" and "clam"), 3 for breasts ("t*ts" and "boobies"), 13 asses (9 used with "hole"), 8 hells, 2 craps, 1 damn, 7 uses of "Oh my God," 3 of "Jesus," 2 each of "God" and "Jesus Christ" and 1 use each of "For Christ's sakes," "God" and "G-damn."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • Various song lyrics contain sexually related material (what a male singer says is the amazed response when he drops his drawers; another comparing penis sizes using the word "d*ck"; one with the repeated line "Fooled around and fell in love"; another with sexual uses of "p*ssy," etc.).
  • Harold showers, but we don't see anything below the torso. However, Kumar, who's seated on the toilet, comments on Harold's "nice pubes." We later see Harold shirtless.
  • Kumar packs a porno magazine that has vagina in the title and a partially nude woman on the cover, but we then see him masturbating with that (hand movement under the covers, followed by ejaculate hitting his face).
  • Kumar wears a t-shirt that shows images of a kitty and a magnet (for "P*ssy magnet").
  • About a movie he's watching on the plane, Kumar tells Harold, "This chick is giving me such a boner." Moments later, while Harold is urinating in bathroom, Kumar joins him and puts his hand down inside the front of his own pants. Harold adamantly tells Kumar the latter is not joining the mile high club, but Kumar is just retrieving his bong.
  • Real terrorists comment on the "c*ck-meat sandwiches" served in Gitmo, and Harold & Kumar then learn the meaning of that. A large military man comes in, drops his pants (we see his bare butt), and two terrorists kneel down to perform oral sex on him (we don't see the actual act). An even larger man (Big Bob) then comes into Harold & Kumar's cell, telling them, "I got a whole lot of sandwich for you" and "Get down on your knees and open your mouth." He then reveals his penis to them (we don't see it, but they react in shock to the apparent size), and one of the guys complains, "His d*ck smells like sh*t." A jailbreak in another cell, however, prevents anything else from happening.
  • Harold & Kumar end up at a friend's "bottomless" party. A shapely woman opens the door and we see her bare butt, and then a frontal view of her pubic hair. She lets them in, and they see various women wearing tops, but no pants (Harold comments on all of the "exposed vagina"). Thus, there are many views of bare butts and pubic hair. They then meet their friend who announces the bottomless theme (saying he was tired of topless parties -- and reprimands a woman for removing her bikini top and exposing her bare breasts). That man then stands up from the hot tub and we see a close-up view of his penis and great deal of pubic hair that prompts Kumar to compare it to Osama bin Laden's beard (and Kumar reminds that man of the man's past problem with crabs). The man then asks the two to join the party's theme ("Let 'em dangle"), so they drop their pants. We see their bare butts, followed by Kumar swinging his hips (and thus his unseen penis) back and forth, with us hearing the sound of that and then of his penis hitting Harold who's disgusted by that action.
  • Harold says that Maria isn't a skank, but Kumar says that Harold will be "up in her guts in no time" (having sex with her).
  • We see a flashback to Kumar and Vanessa meeting in a college library, and his arm accidently grazes her chest, with him sheepishly saying he touched her breast. She tells him that lots of girls find intelligence sexy, and soon the two are passionately making out while standing in the stacks.
  • A guy on the phone tells Kumar that he "shtupped" some girl and that she gave him a "bloken." When Kumar asks what that is, the man says it's when a woman gives you head while you're on the toilet "taking a sh*t."
  • About having an inbred son, a hunter says he and his wife are siblings, but that doesn't prevent them "from getting it on."
  • Kumar dreams about being in bed with Vanessa, and her complaining about the agony of Colton's tiny penis trying to satisfy her. Kumar then says he bets she's been missing his "thunder c*ck" and she says she has. He then says they should have a three-some, and thus a human-sized bag of pot joins them, dressed in lingerie (but looking like a bag of pot and not a woman). We then see various views of three-way groping; Kumar reacting to both Vanessa and the bag apparently performing oral sex on him below the camera shot; the bag having sex on top of Vanessa (with movement and sounds) and then a view of Kumar having sex with the bag from behind it in that same shot; and then Kumar "fisting" the bag of pot (all played for goofy laughs rather than eroticism).
  • Kumar jokes that there are probably at least two uncircumcised "d*cks" dangling in front of Maria's face, and then he then makes all sorts of exaggerated female to male oral sex gestures and sounds.
  • In a forced confession of sorts, Kumar says that he put Harold's toothbrush down into his pants and on his "d*ck."
  • A person wears a t-shirt that reads "I (heart) smegma."
  • Neil talks about his past love who had nipples like Hershey Kisses that he wanted to suck on all night long. He says that when he now sees such candy, his "balls" get wet, but he adds that he likes having hot sex with random tramps.
  • We see an old photo of Vanessa and Kumar, with her holding up large melons (or something similar) in front of her clothed chest, and him doing a mock, near licking of them.
  • Neil gives Harold & Kumar an old blanket to hide under, but apologizes for it being sticky.
  • Neil states that he's going to a "whorehouse" to "get my f*ck on" and comments on Harold & Kumar and their "d*cks." We then see them arrive at the "Fox Hole" where they see a painting showing a bare-breasted woman, as well as many real hookers, including a line of them showing a progression of ever greater amounts of cleavage (one woman is named "T*ts Hemmingway," and she flexes her breasts up and down). Neil then goes off with one, saying he's going to rock out "with my c*ck out," and then makes a similar rhyme about the woman's "clam." We then see Kumar with two hookers and he tells them to get it on with each other, so they remove their tops (we see bare breasts) and make out. Harold, however, is having a heart-to-heart with a roomful of hookers (nothing sexual, no nudity) and complains about Kumar having sex at that same time. When we return to that other room, however, we see Kumar crying between those two bare-breasted women seated on the bed with him (he's clothed). He then assumes they also have relationship issues, but the women say "we're whores." We then see Neil's hooker come out, steaming mad due to a fresh brand he's branded onto her bare butt (we see it in close-up).
  • Kumar wears a t-shirt showing the silhouette of a woman (crisscrossed with parts of the Confederate flag) who's on all fours, with the wording saying "Confederate Style."
  • A rubber, S&M mask and cans of mace are pulled from Neil's bag.
  • We see some posters of scantly clad women in President Bush's den.
  • One of the guys reminds the other about Gitmo where they'd be forced to suck Big Bob's "d*ck."

  • A prostitute twice shoots Neil in the back with a shotgun, with some bloody results (played for laughs).
  • Vanessa breaks her high heel and falls to the ground, but is okay.
  • Harold sprays mace into a guard's eyes, and then he and Kumar struggle with that guard and another. Fox finally sees what's occurring and aims his handgun at them, but Beecher (having tired of his behavior) grabs and flips Fox to the floor and holds the gun on him. Beecher, however, slips on stuff on the floor, hits the door while falling, and is sucked out of the plane when it opens. Kumar & Harold also end up out the plane and falling, with only Harold having a parachute. They eventually hook up, but Fox repeatedly shoots at them as he falls without a parachute. They open theirs but end up crashing through a skylight in a home.
