QUICK TAKE:
Computer Animated Action/Adventure: A teen and a princess are drawn to each other despite coming from rival races, and must contend with that and her banished aunt trying to start a war between their peoples.
PLOT:
In the land of Jhamora, the Lockni and Nohrin live in an uneasy truce fifteen years after a contentious past. It was then that King Zahn (voice of LOUIS GOSSETT, JR.) of the winged Nohrin sent out scouts to find a new place for his people to live after theirs became barren. The grounded and mystical stone worshipping Lockni accepted them with welcome arms, but the King's sister, Sedessa (voice of ANNE BANCROFT), ended up slaughtering many of them. When she then killed her own Queen, Zahn had her wings cut off and banished her forever, but the damage was already done and the Lockni haven't trusted their neighbors ever since.

Chief among them is teenager Delgo (voice of FREDDIE PRINZE, JR.) who -- despite the pacifist teachings of Elder Marley (voice of MICHAEL CLARK DUNCAN) -- doesn't like them, mainly because they killed his parents when he was just a child. Even so, when he and his best friend, Filo (voice of CHRIS KATTAN), run into Princess Kyla (voice of JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT) who's crossed over the border into their land, Delgo attempts to help her.

That doesn't sit well with General Bogardus (voice of VAL KILMER) or Colonel Raius (voice of MALCOLM McDOWELL) who come to her supposed defense and escort her back to the kingdom. But Raius isn't as loyal as he may seem, as he's actually in cahoots with Sedessa who's holed away with her gremlin-like assistant, Spig (voice of ERIC IDLE), and his hulking but dimwitted brother, Spog.

With Raius' help, Sedessa is plotting to overthrow her brother and assume control of the Nohrins, and thus the two set a plan into motion where they'll stoke the mistrust and hatred between the two races. As a result, Delgo and Kyla, despite their differences, try to foil the nefarious scheme.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Those interested in fantasy-based stories with otherworldly creatures, etc. might be enticed by the offering.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG
For sequences of fantasy action violence.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
It's debatable whether kids view non-human, animated characters as role models, but here's a quick look at their major characteristics.
  • DELGO is a cocky and adventurous teenage Lockni whose parents were killed by Nohrin forces when he was just a child. Accordingly, he distrusts them greatly, that is, except for Princess Kyla who he befriends. When he's framed for kidnapping her, and is abducted himself, he must fight his way toward resolving the issue and saving the day.
  • PRINCESS KYLA is the daughter of King Zahn who believes her father just doesn't understand her, and she doesn't like the separation enforced between her people and the Lockni. She befriends Delgo, but must contend with being kidnapped by her evil aunt.
  • SEDESSA is that nefarious relative, banished long ago for murdering Kyla's mother. Since then, she's rebuilt her power base and is staging a coup against her brother the king. She's the story's central villain who will do anything to execute her plan. She drinks in one scene.
  • BOGARDUS is a Nohrin general with a gambling addiction who doesn't grasp his subordinate's treachery until it's too late. While he doesn't like and clashes with Delgo, he's forced to team up with him to defeat Raius and Sedessa.
  • RAIUS is the Nohrin colonel who's in cahoots with Sedessa to overthrow King Zahn and thus replace Bogardus as the lead general.
  • FILO is Delgo's best friend, a fairly wimpy scaredy-cat.
  • ELDER MARLEY is the Lockni spiritual leader who tries to impart some wisdom and patience into the reckless and impulsive Delgo.
  • KING ZAHN is the ruler of the Nohrin who's fooled into believing the Lockni have kidnapped his daughter and thus gives the orders for a military attack on them.
  • SPIG is Sedessa's gremlin-like sidekick who battles Delgo, Bogardus and others.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this computer-animated fantasy adventure pic. There's no profanity, but some colorful phrases are present, and the villainess is seen in a formfitting outfit that shows off her buxom figure (but nothing that's explicit), while there's a chaste kiss.

Violence includes scenes of fighting, ranging from full-scale battles between huge armies, and smaller, one-on-on contact, with hitting, punching, etc. Some characters die (none graphically), and deaths of others are heavily suggested. That and moments of potential peril might be unsettling for very young kids, and some of the action and stunts might be enticing for some kids to try to imitate.

Bad attitudes are present, as is tense family material (regarding familial deaths). Some characters are apparently intoxicated (and/or just rowdy in general), and there's a brief scene of crude humor.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Some of Sedessa's goons whack each other while apparently intoxicated (there are goblets on the table in front of them) and/or just rowdy in general.
  • Sedessa has what appears to be wine with a meal.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • Sedessa's pet creature pees on the carpet and then farts.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • We see Sedessa's troops attacking a village, setting fire to homes, knocking Lockni down, stomping on a toy, and Sedessa giving the order that there be no survivors.
  • Sedessa poisons and kills her sister-in-law, the Queen, with some sort of deadly fumes.
  • Sedessa turns against the thugs who've helped her rebuild her power. They're captured in their dining hall that's then lowered into some sort of glowing red smoke, presumably to their deaths (but that's not seen).
  • Those opposed to supernatural powers should note that some of the Lockni posses such abilities and control things with their minds.
  • For those opposed to gambling, there's a scene of that featuring Bogardus, Raius and others.
  • Sedessa wants to overthrow her brother as ruler of the Nohrin, and Raius is all too happy to help her do so, by causing unrest and stoking the hatred between their people and the Lockni.
  • An official wants weapons as collateral for Bogardus' request for loaned money to cover his gambling debt, and he turns out to be in cahoots with Raius.
  • Raius purposefully damages stones in a Lockni sanctuary, all to incite outrage among those people.
  • Delgo says their two races won't ever get along, and that if Kyla thinks otherwise, "Maybe your father is right, you're just a silly little girl."
  • Raius follows Kyla in the air, and shoots a dart into Kyla's neck, to capture her and fake her kidnapping. He then plants doubts in the King's mind about Delgo.
  • Bogardus and Delgo still have bad attitudes toward each other, despite having similar goals.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence" may also be unsettling, suspenseful or scary to younger viewers but probably few if any others.
  • Some creatures seen at various points in the film might be scary-looking to younger kids.
  • Delgo and Filo race on dinosaur type creatures, with Delgo jumping from one to another, and he does various stunts, including a handstand on the back of one of them. However, he doesn't see a tree branch that he runs into, with it bending and then sending him flying off a cliff. We then see him hanging onto a lone tree growing out of the side of the cliff. When that breaks, he plummets a long way, with Kyla flying in, catching, and thus saving him.
  • Some sort of monster slowly stalks Kyla in a field (she isn't aware of that). As it leaps at her, Delgo throws his pickax that hits and deflects the creature aside.
  • We see a skeleton in a suspended prison cage, while another is later seen at the bottom of a pit.
  • A spider-like creature crawls on Kyla's hand, grossing her out.
  • Delgo gets his suspended prison cage swinging back and forth, and then jumps over to the one holding Bogardus, but slides down the side, with Bogardus catching Delgo just in time.
  • Filo backs into a large spider web, freaks out, and backs into a wall, breaking it open into the tunnel behind it.
  • A big, crab-like monster comes at Delgo, Filo and Bogardus. Delgo tries to hit it with his pickax but is knocked aside, while Bogardus tries to defend himself with his sword, but is captured in the pinchers, with the crab's long tongue then coming at him. It then throws him aside when Delgo shows he has one of the creature's babies, and then chases him through a cave, with various close calls until the creature ends up falling on its back, defeated.
  • Bogardus informs Delgo that Sedessa's goons are planning on cutting off Kyla's wings.
  • A big guard accidentally causes parts of a palace to fall to the floor. Sedessa and Delgo manage to avoid being hit, but the King apparently was not that lucky (and Delgo must pull him away when another structure nearly falls on him). Even so, Sedessa ends up dangling from the side of a precipice and Delgo rescues her.
  • Sedessa kicks Delgo and then comes at Kyla with a knife, seemingly stabbing her in the chest. But when Kyla looks there, no wound exists, and the knife blade is bent from the non-penetrative impact of the attack. The floor then gives way and Sedessa falls through the hole, presumably to her death (no impact below is seen).
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Swords/Spears/Knives/Crossbows/Mallets/Clubs: Carried and/or used to threaten, wound or kill others. See "Violence" for details.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "A chorus of wart-ridden Freaks" "(Heard what,) Wuss?" "I smoked you," "You pansies," "What, am I an idiot?" "Are you crazy?" "You fools," "Moron," "Idiot," "I tingle with expectation," "Your carnivorousness," "Beat the snot out of Lockni quota," "Your guest has de-slumberated," "C'mon, you blubberous nincompoop," "Are you nuts?" "Somebody needs a serious time-out," "What now, genius?" "No-no-no-no-no-no," "You're the idiot, idiot," "We're cool," "That's twisted," "No way," "Say hello to gravity," "Umm, hello" and "Incompetent fool."
  • The fighting, action and other stunts might be enticing for kids to try to imitate.
  • Delgo and Filo race on dinosaur type creatures, with Delgo jumping from one to another, and he does various stunts, including a handstand on the back of one of them.
  • Spog loudly belches.
  • When a Nohrin states, "Which one of you is Delgo?" the latter responds, "Which one of you is asking?"
  • Spog's big fat belly hangs out from his short shirt.
  • Spog lets out a loud belch that quiets a crowd.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • None.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • An extreme amount of suspenseful, ominous, and heavily dramatic music plays in the film.

  • None.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • Sedessa poisons and kills her sister-in-law, the Queen, with some sort of deadly fumes.

  • Kyla mentions her mom dying, while Delgo says his folks died when he was young.
  • Delgo has a dream (that turns into a nightmare) about his boyhood past with his parents. Soldiers then burst in and the boy sees his parents killed (we only see his reaction, as well as a view of his father's hand hitting the floor and letting go of his pickax). A soldier then looks through the home and spots the hiding boy, but doesn't seize or kill him, instead telling the child he's on his own.
  • The king worries about his missing daughter.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • The comment that one cannot change the past, but we can learn from it, and can proceed with revenge or mercy.
  • We see that Bogardus has a gambling addiction/problem.
  • The comment that the only honor in fighting is if what you believe in is honorable.
  • The comment that war is easy to start, but hard to end.
  • The Romeo and Juliet style plot.
  • Groups of people who dislike and/or despise others belonging to another group, just because they are part of that by birth.

  • Sedessa poisons and kills her sister-in-law, the Queen, with some sort of deadly fumes.
  • For her treachery, Zahn has a guard slice off Sedessa's wings (we hear but don't see the impact).
  • Some of Sedessa's goons whack each other while apparently intoxicated (there are goblets on the table in front of them).

  • Thinking Kyla is in trouble, Raius and Bogardus fly in, with Raius knocking Filo to the ground and pinning him there, while Bogardus kicks Delgo backwards. When Delgo charges him, Bogardus grabs him and holds a sword to his neck before similarly pinning him to the ground.
  • One of Elder Marley's students levitates a rod or stick, but it then hits goes out of control and whacks them, knocking them aside (played for laughs).
  • In retaliation for the earlier attack by Bogardus and Raius on Delgo and Filo, some Lockni attack some Nohrins and throw stuff around.

  • Raius knocks Spig aside.
  • Bogardus knocks various guards aside and holds a spear on Raius, but the latter distracts him, allowing him to knock out Bogardus.
  • Raius purposefully damages stones in a Lockni sanctuary, all to incite outrage among those people.
  • Raius kicks Spog out, and then grabs Spig and throws him out the door.
  • A flying creature passes by, ridden by Raius, and it knocks down Delgo. Raius follows Kyla in the air, and shoots a dart into Kyla's neck, to capture her and fake her kidnapping.
  • Delgo has a dream (that turns into a nightmare) about his boyhood past with his parents. Soldiers then burst in and the boy sees his parents killed (we only see his reaction, as well as a view of his father's hand hitting the floor and letting go of his pickax).
  • Guards suddenly come at and grab Delgo.
  • Filo and Delgo are thrown to the floor from the cage that was holding them. A guard then grabs Delgo by the throat and raises his fist as if he's going to punch him, but the scene ends.

It then throws him aside when Delgo shows he has one of the creature's babies, and then chases him through a cave, with various close calls until the creature ends up falling on its back, defeated.
  • We see that Bogardus has knocked out various guards, but don't see the action (just the aftermath).
  • Bogardus battles with a guard, sword vs. spear.
  • Filo breaks a big vase, and then a statue to try to create a distraction, but neither is heard due to crowd noise.
  • A big guard comes at Delgo with a big mallet, while another is kicked aside. A spear is thrown at Kyla, while Spig comes at Delgo who avoids and then knocks him aside. Delgo and Kyla escape, with spears thrown at them, while Bogardus still battles a guard. Delgo knocks another guard aside, and then ends up on a large statue on the side of the palace. He slips and falls a long way down through a glass atrium, but is okay. He then pushes a large case into a worker, with that then knocking down some other workers.

Delgo then causes a huge hanging sculpture to swing down and smash into the guard, but the latter is still alive. Delgo then hits that guard in the clothed crotch with his pickax, and the guard then throws Delgo quite hard against a wall.
  • Filo causes a stampede of big creatures that then run over various huge figures fighting on the side of the Nohrin.

  • Sedessa kicks Delgo and then comes at Kyla with a knife, seemingly stabbing her in the chest. But when Kyla looks there, no wound exists, and the knife blade is bent from the non-penetrative impact of the attack.
