QUICK TAKE:
Romantic Comedy: While she tries to ignore a newspaper reporter who's interested in her, a perpetual bridesmaid hopes to woo her boss only to be undermined by her younger and more vivacious sister who swings into town and sweeps him off his feet.
PLOT:
Ever the epitome of the old saying, "Always a bridesmaid, never a bride," Jane (KATHERINE HEIGL) has a closetful of hideous, one-day dresses to prove it. While her randy friend, Casey (JUDY GREER), has no problem guy chasing, Jane is more reserved, particularly since she's secretly in love with her boss, George (EDWARD BURNS). She's also a romantic at heart, always clipping the wedding announcements and such in the commitments section of the local paper, unaware that the column's writer, Kevin (JAMES MARSDEN), is also a fledgling reporter out doing his first big story and annoying her in the process. Having observed her racing back and forth from one wedding to the next on the same day, he's now latched onto her, not only as potential for his story, but also because he's attracted to her.

She has bigger fish to fry, however, when her younger and more vivacious sister, Tess (MALIN AKERMAN), rolls into town and proceeds to sweep George off his feet. It's not long before the two are engaged, with Tess asking her big sis to be her bridesmaid. From that point on, and as she contends with Kevin always being around, and the discovery of Tess using George's "little brother" Pedro (DAVID CASTRO) as her personal housecleaner, Jane must decide how she's going to proceed.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of anyone in the cast or romantic comedies, they just might.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For language, some innuendo and sexuality.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • KATHERINE HEIGL plays a New Yorker and perpetual bridesmaid who can't get up the courage to tell her boss how she secretly feels about him. Accordingly, she must then watch as her sister swings into town and proceeds to sweep him off his feet. She uses profanity, drinks (once to the point of intoxication), ends up sleeping with Kevin despite initially not liking him, and must deal with her jealousy regarding her sister's actions.
  • JAMES MARSDEN plays the commitments writer at the local paper who wants to be a feature reporter, and thus does a story on Jane, Tess and George. He then falls for and sleeps with Jane after drinking heavily with her.
  • MALIN AKERMAN plays Jane's younger and more vivacious sister who tells white lies to snare George (with whom she presumably fools around), drinks, and there's talk of old photos showing her presumably promiscuous past.
  • EDWARD BURNS plays Jane's boss who's unaware of her secret crush on him and thus falls for Tess. He uses some profanity and drinks some.
  • JUDY GREER plays Jane's randy friend who's more sexually forward than her. She drinks and uses some profanity.
  • DAVID CASTRO plays George's "little brother" who ends up working as Tess' unofficial housecleaner, but sees that as a potential jumping board for him professionally.

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this romantic comedy that's been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of at least 1 "f" word, with several other barely incomplete ones, other expletives, and some colorful phrases also being uttered. Sexually related dialogue is present, as is making out, while off-screen sex occurs. Cleavage is present, as are views of women in other revealing attire.

Characters drink in various scenes, including two becoming intoxicated and then sleeping together. Various characters have varying degrees of bad attitudes, while sisters have a falling out over both being in love with the same man. Some behavior may be enticing to imitate, and some crude humor is present, as is a little bit of slapstick material, while a woman slaps a man while mad at him.

Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Jane sarcastically asks Casey if she can't "keep it in your pants" about being at a wedding, with Casey replying the only reason to wear a bridesmaid's dress is to have some drunk guy rip it off with his teeth.
  • Miscellaneous people have drinks at a wedding.
  • After Jane is accidentally knocked out at a wedding, Kevin assists her and asks someone to get, among other things, some liquor for her.

  • After Casey jokingly says she's going to kick Jane's rear, she says she's going to have some drinks.
  • Miscellaneous people drink in a bar, where Kevin orders a Scotch and then convinces Jane to have a drink as well. Sometime later, we then see them drinking various shots (with Kevin stating that the one thing he likes about weddings is the open bar), while others continue to drink around them. They then drunkenly start singing an Elton John song, and then do so while standing up on the bar as others cheer them on.

  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • About Kevin's newspaper prose regarding weddings and other such matters, his male coworker says in disbelief, "And you're not getting laid." That man then asks Kevin if he knows what he can do to women like that being in that marriage state of mind, and Kevin replies by asking if he means women who are about to be married. The coworker then says yes and that it would in essence be a one night stand (not his exact phrase, but what he's implying).

  • Tess tells various white lies to George about herself to try to make him like her.

  • Kevin states that his wife left him for his college roommate.

  • Tess unofficially "employs" young Pedro as her housecleaner.
  • A woman makes a condescending remark about Jane looking good despite a recent newspaper article about her always being the bridesmaid. In reply, Jane sarcastically states that she gets to have hot, random, hate sex with strangers and thus feels better.

  • FRIGHTENING SCENES

  • In a montage showing Jane in various bridesmaid dresses, we see a brief shot of an underwater wedding, where some men are in just swim trunks.
  • About her helping out her various friends as their bridesmaid, Jane says she does various things including caulking. That prompts Kevin to say into his digital voice recorder, "Likes caulk" (with the pronunciation almost making it sound like he's using a slang term for male genitals).
  • Kevin and Jane make out while clothed and standing in a bar, and we then see them making out and frantically beginning to undress back in their car that is stuck in the mud. They then lean back against the front seat which then falls backwards, and the scene ends there, with sex implied between the two. The next morning, Kevin returns to the car with coffee or the like, and Jane is there with one dress strap down off her shoulder. She seems embarrassed and says that she never does this, with Kevin saying he knows because she kept repeating that last night.
