QUICK TAKE:
Horror: National Guard trainees must contend with stumbling upon a tribe of mutant cannibals that inhabit a long-abandoned U.S. military base once used for nuclear bomb testing.
PLOT:
Two years after a vacationing family broke down and encountered a tribe of mutant cannibals in the deserts of New Mexico, National Guard instructor Sgt. Jeffrey Millstone (FLEX ALEXANDER) is unknowingly leading his trainees directly into the maelstrom upon their orders to deliver supplies to a small military outfit performing unknown work there. Millstone generally isn't pleased with the recruits' efforts so far, although the appropriately named Crank (JACOB VARGAS) lives up to his name.

The same doesn't hold true for Napoleon (MICHAEL McMILLIAN) who's having second thoughts about being in the Guard, while the likes of Amber Johnson (JESSICA STROUP), Missy (DANIELLA ALONSO), Delmar (LEE THOMPSON YOUNG), Stump (BEN CROWLEY), Splitter (ERIC EDELSTEIN), Mickey (RESHAD STRIK) and others are all underperforming in Millstone's eyes.

They're all put to the test when they arrive on the military base that was once used for nuclear bomb testing. With the small outpost deserted, they get a distress call and decide to go on a rescue mission when they spot a mirror reflection being used as a spotting beacon.

Little do they know, however, that the mutant humans who have inhabited the radiation-polluted lands for the past half-century are luring them in for the kill. From that point on, and cut off from the rest of the world, the various trainees do what they can and must to survive.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of the first film or grisly horror films in general, they probably will.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For prolonged sequences of strong gruesome horror violence and gore, a rape and language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
With most of the characters barely differentiated from the rest (other than simple characteristics, and aside from the human vs. mutant human split), they (the humans) collectively use strong profanity and try to deal with the horrific situation in which they find themselves, while the others (the mutants) kill and presumably eat their prey, with one raping a woman for breeding purposes.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a quick summary of the content found in this R-rated horror film. Profanity consists of at least 79 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Some sexually related dialogue is present, as is the sight of a bare-breasted woman giving birth (we see the baby come out, but no actual view of the mother's genitals) and a fairly graphic and disturbing rape (with movement and sounds).

Other violence (of which there is a great deal) consists of humans and mutant humans killing each other by various means (gunfire, stabbing and impaling, and much more) or otherwise bashing them around, most of which has extremely bloody and gory results. Other severed and dissected human body parts (from previous violence) are also seen. Those scenes, many moments of potential peril, and the sight of the deformed mutants could be rather unsettling, suspenseful, and/or scary for viewers, particularly younger ones and those sensitive to such material.

Various characters have varying degrees of bad attitudes, while some scatological material is also present. If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there's some bouncy, point of view camerawork, as well as other camera movement at various points in the film.

ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • None.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • We see a close-up view of an anguished-looking woman's face as she screams in pain. As the camera pulls out, we then see that she's bound to her bed, bare-breasted, and in labor. She has long and gnarly toenails, and then delivers the bloody child (it and blood come out from her crotch area) that's yanked out by the mutant father along with what looks like the umbilical cord and placenta (both of which are also bloody). The father then says, "Die!" and punches the mother in the face, wounding or killing her.
  • We see a recently killed man whose belly has been cut or torn open and his bloody intestines and such are seen.
  • A man turns and a mutant is suddenly behind him, with blood on its mouth and holding what look like bloody intestines. Another mutant then slams an ax or something similar into the man's head from behind, killing him (with brief bloody results).
  • We hear the sound of a spear of some sort impaling a man, and then see its blade sticking out from the other side of his body (with bloody results).
  • When Napoleon goes to use a porta-potty, Millstone says no way, that he'll "take a dump" behind some cacti like everyone else. When Napoleon asks what he'll use as toilet paper, Millstone says his hand.
  • We see Napoleon sitting in a porta-potty with his pants down (the end of his shirt covers his crotch area). But he's interrupted before any bodily functions occur.
  • We see an injured man covered in feces, porta-potty liquid and blood as he lies on the ground with various cuts on his body (he then dies).
  • As a person is pulled into a hole, we hear various bone crunching sounds and see blood spurt up onto the man before he's completely yanked into it.
  • The soldiers come upon a dead and bloody body, and one of them pulls a large shard of something out of the bloody head (seen in graphic, close-up detail).
  • A man who's been shot is very bloody and his body is then attached to another to rappel down off a cliff. Halfway down, however, the line breaks (from an unseen mutant cutting it) and the man and dead body fall to the rock below (from a long distance we see the bloody aftermath on the rocks below -- seen again later in the film).
  • The group comes across a wounded and very bloody soldier (one eye appears to be missing). That man then takes a pistol and shoots himself in the head, committing suicide (with bloody results).
  • We see and hear the motion of Missy dropping her pants, and then that of her urinating, but a mutant suddenly sneaks up and grabs her in the middle of that (we don't see any urine or nudity).
  • Stump starts to make his way down the steep and jagged cliffs (barehanded, and with no ropes), but hears noises around him. Halfway down, a mutant suddenly grabs and chops off his arm, holding onto the severed and bloody limb while blood squirts out from Stump's stump. He then falls from there and lands hard on the rocks far below (seen from a distance, with blood splattering out upon impact).
  • Missy spits in a mutant's face, causing him to backhand her, with bloody results. He then partially gets on top of her on a table, ready to rape her. His extremely long tongue then licks her face and then goes deep into her mouth and throat, with her then biting off the amount that's in her mouth.
  • A mutant throws a severed arm at the survivors, with Napoleon firing off various shots, hoping to hit the hidden creature. The last one does, but Napoleon's then out of bullets, so the mutant knocks him aside and then picks up Amber. She starts to gouge out his eye, but he has her by the throat, with Napoleon then hitting him over the head with a large rock. With the mutant now on the floor, Napoleon repeatedly bashes the mutant's head with that rock, leaving a bloody mess and mostly collapsed head.
  • A man is mortally wounded by a mutant firing a machine gun (leaving him bloody), with Crank then riddling that mutant with return fire, killing him (with bloody results).
  • The various survivors have blood on them (theirs and that of others).
  • The survivors come across a room containing many human remains (severed heads, fingers, arms, etc.) as well as a body missing its torso (all graphically shown).
  • A mutant punches Missy, grabs and throws Napoleon aside, and then grabs Amber. Napoleon slices the mutant's Achilles tendon with a knife and then stabs him in the neck with the same (both with bloody results). Amber then kills the mutant with a bayonet jab.
  • Blood and some brain matter come out (and land on a mutant's foot) when he's shot in the head. Moments later, Amber pushes her finger down into his brain through that bullet hole, and Napoleon jabs a bayonet down into his mouth, killing him (with bloody results, including the sight of a growing pool of blood on the ground by him).
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • The mutants obviously have bad attitudes for attacking and presumably eating their human victims, while one also rapes a woman for breeding purposes.
  • Crank has a bad attitude toward many people, especially Napoleon who he pushes down and pins at the back edge of a moving transport truck.
  • Some viewers might be offended by a military training scene showing a Middle-Eastern woman revealing bombs under her burqa.
  • Napoleon expresses doubt about the U.S. military involvement in the Middle East, saying the President has told too many lies about that (some viewers might not like that sentiment).
  • After another death, Crank pushes Napoleon and calls him a "faggot."
  • Stump decides he's had enough, opts to leave the group, and tries to make it down the outside of the hills rather than the inside with the rest.
  • Crank refers to a friendly mutant as a "f*cking retard" and then shoves him backwards.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence," "Blood/Gore" and "Jump Scenes" may be unsettling, suspenseful, or scary to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material.
  • The sight of the disfigured mutants (sometimes to disturbing extremes) might be unsettling or scary to some viewers.
  • Once the National Guard trainees set out on their rescue mission, the rest of the film (first outside in the rocky hills, then inside dimly lit mine tunnels and such) is just one prolonged tense sequence after another until the end (at least for those sensitive to scenes of violence, pending peril, close-calls and such).
  • A man slowly walks through a dimly lit area, uncertain of what he might find.
  • Mickey suddenly falls into a hole (down into a mine), barely holding on as the others come to his rescue and pull him out.
  • Delmar nearly slips and falls while climbing a sheer cliff.
  • Napoleon and Amber see that their transport truck is engulfed in flames, and that their machine guns have been stolen (as they wait by themselves at an outpost).
  • The group tries to make their way down the craggy and steep hills, doing so along the very edge of the cliffs.
  • The group comes across a wounded and very bloody soldier (one eye appears to be missing). He informs the group that the mutants will kill the men but keep the women for breeding purposes, to repopulate their kind. That man then takes a pistol and shoots himself in the head, committing suicide (with bloody results).
  • We see a mutant sneaking up on Amber and Missy, but it's a trap for him, with the other soldiers then riddling him with gunfire, killing him (with bloody results).
  • We see and hear the motion of Missy dropping her pants, and then that of her urinating, but a mutant suddenly sneaks up and grabs her in the middle of that (we don't see any urine or nudity).
  • The group follows a mutant (carrying Missy) into a cave that's really just old mine shafts and such deep inside the hills.
  • Delmar slides down a nearly vertical metal tube, unsure of where it leads (he's okay at the bottom). Others then follow, with Amber freaking out when a large spider scampers across her.
  • The group slowly makes their way across a flooded mine floor, with Amber and Napoleon suddenly falling through a hole along with all of that water. They land hard and are dazed, but are otherwise okay.
  • Crank runs and tries to jump over a large hole, but lands on the edge and tries to hold on. Delmar then does the same, but clears the hole, grabs Crank, and saves him.
  • Missy spits in a mutant's face, causing him to backhand her, with bloody results. He then partially gets on top of her on a table, ready to rape her. His extremely long tongue then licks her face and then goes deep into her mouth and throat, with her then biting off the amount that's in her mouth. She then kicks him in the crotch and tries to escape, but another mutant knocks the first aside and then throws her around. He then gets between her legs and says, "Give me a baby" (as mucous or something similar dangles from his mouth and nose toward her) but the scene ends there for the moment. When the story returns to this point, we see the motion of the mutant raping her from behind (we see close-ups views of her anguished face, as well as him when he climaxes, along with related sounds).
  • The lone survivors realize they're now out of ammo, with more mutants still around.
  • A mutant crashes through a wooden wall, grabs, and then repeatedly throws Missy about, including to the floor. Amber fires her last shot and hits the mutant in the head (with blood and some brain matter coming out, landing on his shoe), but he keeps coming. He knocks Napoleon aside and then pushes Amber against a wall where he tries to choke her. Napoleon then runs a spear through the mutant, nearly hitting Amber who pushes her finger down into his brain through the bullet hole in his head. He then falls to the floor, presumably dead, prompting Missy to kick him in the head repeatedly (for previously raping her), but he suddenly grabs her foot and reaches for a knife. He's then stabbed through the arm to prevent that reach, allowing Missy to bash him repeatedly in the crotch with a mallet before Napoleon drives a bayonet down through his mouth, killing him (with very bloody results).
  • GUNS/WEAPONS

  • It's possible some disturbed kids might want to imitate some of the violence and such that occurs in the film.
  • A few soldiers (male and female) show the tattoos they have on their arms.
  • Crank gives "the finger" to Napoleon in passing.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • A piece of electronic equipment suddenly sparks, with a man there holding up the now dead rat that shorted it out.
  • A man turns and a mutant is suddenly behind him, with blood on its mouth and holding what look like bloody intestines.
  • Some birds or bats suddenly take flight and startle a solider who's cautiously peering into a dark area.
  • Mickey suddenly falls into a hole (down into a mine), barely holding on as the others come to his rescue and pull him out.
  • We see Napoleon sitting in a porta-potty with his pants down (the end of his shirt covers his crotch area). A sudden sound from below startles him, as does a hand that suddenly juts up in front of his crotch. He races out (pulling up his pants) and gets Amber to look into the mucky mess in the bottom of it. Just then, a man's torso suddenly pops out of the mess (it's an injured man who was put there to die).
  • A sudden sound might startle viewers, as might a man suddenly grabbing a woman's shoulder.
  • Amber heads out on her own, only to hear strange noises all around her while in the rocky hills. A mutant then grabs her from behind and throws her to the ground.
  • The group slowly makes their way across a flooded mine floor, with Amber and Napoleon suddenly falling through a hole along with all of that water.
  • A supposedly dead mutant suddenly grabs Missy's foot.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • An extreme amount of ominous and suspenseful music plays throughout much of the film.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • None that we heard, but a song in the closing credits had some lyrics we couldn't fully hear and/or understand, thus presenting the possibility of them containing potentially objectionable material.
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 79 "f" words (8 used with "mother"), 51 "s" words, 2 slang terms using male genitals ("c*cks*cking" and "d*ck"), 1 using female ones ("p*ssies"), 14 asses (4 used with "hole"), 14 hells, 8 damns, 2 S.O.B.s, 8 uses of "G-damn," 4 of "Oh God," 2 each of "Jesus" and "Jesus Christ" and 1 use of "God."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • We see a bare-breasted woman who's in labor.
  • When one male soldier says his leg is asleep (upon getting off a truck), a comment is made about his "d*ck" being asleep, with the first man telling the second to wake it up, with the second man replying that's the job for the first man's daddy.
  • One soldier jokingly comments on Mickey already being back at the camp with Amber "doing a different kind of training" (meaning sexual).
  • A wounded officer informs the group that the mutants will kill the men but keep the women for breeding purposes, to repopulate their kind.
When the story returns to this point, we see the motion of the mutant raping her from behind (we see close-ups views of her anguished face, as well as him when he climaxes, along with related sounds).
  • SMOKING
  • None.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • None.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Human mutations caused by radiation.
  • Rape (a mutant man rapes a human woman).
  • The National Guard and those who serve in it.
  • How Millstone tries to train and motivate the trainees.
  • VIOLENCE
  • We see a close-up view of an anguished-looking woman's face as she screams in pain. As the camera pulls out, we then see that she's bound to her bed, bare-breasted, and in labor. She has long and gnarly toenails, and then delivers the bloody child (it and blood come out from her crotch area) that's yanked out by the mutant father along with what looks like the umbilical cord and placenta (both of which are also bloody). • We hear the sound of a spear of some sort impaling a man, and then see its blade sticking out from the other side of his body (with bloody results). The mutant on the other end then tosses the injured man off a cliff and onto the rocks below (we don't see the latter impact).
  • We see the National Guard in what first appears to be combat, with them firing machine guns at an unseen enemy, and shots coming back at them. An explosion knocks one man aside when he goes to retrieve his helmet, while another blows several soldiers backwards. A woman then comes out with bombs that she displays under her burqa, but we then see that this has just been a training simulation.
  • Crank has a bad attitude toward many people, especially Napoleon who he pushes down and pins at the back edge of a moving transport truck.
  • Napoleon and Amber see that their transport truck is engulfed in flames (presumably caused by the mutants).
  • Amber heads out on her own, only to hear strange noises all around her while in the rocky hills. A mutant grabs her from behind and throws her to the ground. She kicks him in the head and then hits him with a rock, but then must avoid his attempts at striking her with some sort of large blade. Mickey then shoots the mutant once from a distance, with it then scurrying away into a hole. When Mickey walks up, the mutant grabs his foot and starts to pull him into the small hole, with Amber (who can't get off a shot) and then Napoleon trying to pull him back out. We hear various bone crunching sounds and see blood spurt up onto Mickey before he's completely yanked into the hole.
  • As the soldiers slowly make their way through the rocky hills in daylight, a mutant suddenly jumps down and slams a pickaxe into one of them. Another soldier then shoots at the mutant, but misses. A rock is then thrown down at the soldiers, with one reacting and accidentally shooting and fatally wounding Millstone.

  • Crank refers to a friendly mutant as a "f*cking retard" and then shoves him backwards.
  • A man finds a box of dynamite, but as he carries it away, he realizes too late that it's attached to a cable and activator. The latter hits the ground and the dynamite explodes, killing the man and causing property damage inside the mine room.
  • A mutant punches Missy, grabs and throws Napoleon aside, and then grabs Amber. Napoleon slices the mutant's Achilles tendon with a knife and then stabs him in the neck with the same (both with bloody results). Amber then kills the mutant with a bayonet jab.
