QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: Two clueless and socially maladjusted brothers try to find a woman to impregnate so that their dying father can have a grandchild before his death.
PLOT:
John Solomon (WILL ARNETT) and Dean Solomon (WILL FORTE) are two well-intentioned but clueless and socially maladjusted brothers who lament their failures in the dating world. That's briefly put on the backburner when their father Ed (LEE MAJORS) leaves a message on their answering machine from the local hospital.

When they get there, they find him in a coma, but the doctor says that before Ed slipped into that, he stated his one regret in life was never having a grandchild. Told that people in such states need some reason to live, the siblings decide that they'll give their dad a grandchild before he dies.

When the dating route gets them nowhere, and their pretty neighbor Tara (MALIN AKERMAN) repeatedly rebukes John's advances but does offer to watch Ed after he's been moved into the brothers' apartment, they opt to pay Janine (KRISTEN WIIG) a lot of money to serve as the surrogate mother, but that doesn't sit well with her ex-boyfriend, James (CHI McBRIDE). Nevertheless, and once that's successful, they try to ready themselves for their pending fatherhood, unaware of what that really entails.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of anyone in the cast and/or goofy comedies, they might.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For language and sexual content.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • WILL ARNETT plays one half of the clueless but eager brotherly duo who wants to give his dying father a grandchild. The unofficial leader of the two, he repeatedly hits on women, especially Tara, drinks some, and uses strong profanity.
  • WILL FORTE plays his less outgoing sibling with the same goal. He also drinks some and uses strong profanity.
  • KRISTEN WIIG plays a restaurant employee who agrees to be the surrogate mother in the grandchild-making scheme, and does so only for the money (and through insemination rather than physical contact). She reconsiders giving up the baby late in the film.
  • MALIN AKERMAN plays the men's next-door neighbor who chooses to sit with their comatose father to fulfill some sort of academic needs or requirements, all while constantly having to put up with John hitting on her.
  • CHI McBRIDE plays Janine's ex-boyfriend, a janitor who isn't crazy about the idea of the brothers trying to impregnate her, mistakenly thinks their comments are racially motivated, and uses strong profanity.
  • LEE MAJORS plays the men's father who spends most of the film in a coma.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated comedy. Profanity consists of at least 25 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue is present, as is sexually related material (including men choosing among pornographic magazines - that show some nudity - to use while donating sperm). A woman is seen in a tiny bikini, while off-screen male nudity is implied.

A bus hits a woman, and a dart accidentally lands in a person's nose, both of which are played for comedy, just like the rest of the otherwise benign material in that category. Various instances of behavior might be enticing for some kids to imitate.

Various characters have varying degrees of comedy-based bad attitudes, while some crude humor is present. There's brief drinking and smoking, while comedy-based tense family material occurs.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there's some occasional, handheld camera footage in the film.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Miscellaneous people drink wine in a restaurant.
  • John asks Tara if she wants to get a drink, but she says no.
  • John invites Tara to join him on the hallway floor for dinner, including some champagne. She declines, and he then has some for himself.
  • The brothers have beer and try to get Janine to drink a shot of liquor (testing her to see if she will while pregnant, and she doesn't).
  • Dean take a swig of what may be liquor.
  • To celebrate, Dean reaches for some champagne, but grabs an air horn instead and repeatedly blows it.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • Potential gross-out humor includes the following:
  • When Dean meets his date's father, he immediately plants a kiss on the man's lips (following unheard advice from John), leaving a string of spit between them when they separate.
  • John points out some food on his date's face, removes it with his finger, and then eats what he's wiped off.
  • John farts.
  • During a montage, the brothers practice being fathers, including changing diapers. Various non-excrement things are placed in the diaper, including money, but some may be grossed out when chicken fingers and popcorn are used, followed by Dean eating that from the faked dirty diaper. Later, Dean reacts in horror to what's in the diaper, and we see that it's a small dead bird. Even later, they and others react to the sight and smell of dog excrement in the test diaper (we don't see it).
  • On several occasions, we hear the toilet flush in the brothers' apartment, followed by Tara and then later Janine walking out. With the latter, she comments on now peeing for several (in terms of being pregnant).
  • We see John's urine stream as he relieves himself.
  • Janine states that her water broke, but we don't see anything.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • All of the following is played for comedy.
  • Some viewers may take offense to home schooling being suggested as part of the reason the brothers act the way they do.
  • John buys a woman's groceries to try to get her to date him, and then won't let her leave the store until she agrees (she doesn't).
  • The guys contest late video rental charges at a video store (and then rent another movie) before rushing off to see their sick father in the hospital.
  • John stares at his date's clothed chest, sighs, and then says that her face makes up for her body. He then asks if she's ovulating right now, and then proposes marriage to her (she declines).
  • Dean's date is suddenly hit by a bus and he later states that the bus suffered some damage due to the woman being big.
  • John repeatedly comes on to Tara, despite her obviously not liking such advances.
  • Seeing a photo of a boy in an adoption agency, Dean thinks the boy has Bell's Palsy, thus angering the man there who's the father to that boy (who doesn't have that condition).
  • James (who's black) keeps complaining about racism on the part of the brothers (who are white), but he's reading something into nothing.
  • John gets the news that he's sterile, prompting Dean to laugh that he's going to be the father.
  • Told to learn about children, the brothers hang out at the playground and try to entice a young girl to come with them for ice cream (not realizing what that constitutes to others -- and they're arrested for that).
  • While hanging out at the park, one of the brothers says, "Look at the t*ts on that one," but we then see that he's referring to an obese boy.
  • Janine reneges on her deal with the brothers and decides to keep the yet-to-be-born baby for herself.
  • John and Dean have a falling-out and briefly have bad attitudes toward each other.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Dean has to use electrified medical paddles to shock his father back to life after the power to his life support system is interrupted (played for laughs).
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • None.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "Who the f*ck are these guys?" "The f*ck you doing in there?" "(Little) M*therf*cker," "M*therf*cking," "What the f*ck /is that?" "Calm the f*ck down," "That's f*cking bullsh*t," "Back the f*ck up," "Don't f*ck up," "Holy f*ck," "Some medical sh*t-hole," "Really knows his sh*t," "Sh*t-balls," "I can beat the living sh*t out of you," "Cut that sh*t out," "Bullsh*t," "He really knows his sh*t," "Holy sh*t," "More cushion for the pushin,'" "What do you say we get out of here and I put a baby in you?" "You just said hard-on" (following the comment "Don't be so hard on yourself"), "Talk about a wet dream," "C*cks*cking," "By the time you poop that thing out of your baby-hole," "Look at the t*ts on that one" (said about a chubby boy), "We have d*ck," "Pissed," "Still a lot of fight left in this old bulldog," "Oh crap," "Sucks," "No freaking way," "You look like the real deal," "What the hell /is going on in there?" "Nuts" (testicles), "Ain't that a bitch?" "A real pain in the ass," "Kick-ass dads," "Crapped out," "Losers," "Bitch" and what sounded like "Suck it."
  • The film might inspire some kids to act like either or both of the brothers (acting clueless, excessively cheerful, etc.).
  • John buys a woman's groceries to try to get her to date him.
  • John invites Tara to join him on the hallway floor for dinner, including some champagne. She declines, and he then sits there and has some for himself.
  • John throws darts while Dean has his head right next to the dartboard. We then hear Dean react in pain, and then see a dart sticking in his nose (no blood and played for comedy).
  • During a montage, the brothers practice being fathers, including dropping a fake baby down a stairwell opening, and another bit of "find the baby" where John has hidden it inside a toilet tank.
  • The brothers repeatedly throw glass bottles at a case they think they're going to use as the baby's crib (the bottles shatter on it).
  • We see that John tattooed Tara's name on his belly.
  • Janine sticks her tongue out at Tara.
  • To celebrate, Dean reaches for some champagne, but grabs an air horn instead and repeatedly blows it.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • Dean's date is suddenly hit by a bus (played for laughs).
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • None.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • None.
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 25 "f" words (7 used with "mother"), 14 "s" words, 3 slang terms using male genitals ("d*ck" and "c*cks*cking"), 1 for female ones ("baby-hole"), 1 for breasts ("t*ts"), 7 hells, 6 asses (1 used with "hole"), 4 craps, 10 uses of "Oh my God," 3 each of "God" and "My God," 2 of "G-damn" and 1 use each of "Jesus" and "Oh God."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • John stares at his date's clothed chest, sighs, and then says that her face makes up for her body. He then asks if she's ovulating right now, and then proposes marriage to her (she declines).
  • Dean's date shows a little cleavage, and when he meets her father, he immediately plants a kiss on his lips (following unheard advice from John), leaving a string of spit between them when they separate.
  • Hearing that their father's only regret has been not having a grandchild, the guys agree to fix that. John then states that before they were trying to enter women just for themselves, but will now be entering women for their dad.
  • Dean has a date with a plus-sized woman, asking if he's heard the term "more cushion for the pushin.'" She asks why, he says, "Cuz you got it," and she laughs. He then tells her, "What do you say we get out of here and I put a baby in you?" She's excited about that, including the no conditions part, but she's hit by a bus before anything happens.
  • When John tells Dean not to be so hard on himself, Dean jokes, "You just said hard-on."
  • Tara shows some cleavage.
  • When John says they're going to have to try something different (to get women), Dean replies, "Like anal?" (or something along those lines).
  • After they come to a financial agreement over Janine being a surrogate mother to their child, John says he guesses he'll go first, with Dean saying he wants to do that. That's followed by comments about them getting multiple shots and blanketing her with their sperm. John then says he can't wait to feel himself in her, with her replying the only thing he's going to feel the inside of is a Dixie cup. They're surprised and disappointed by this revelation, thinking they should get something for the money they're paying her (with her replying that will be the baby). That's followed by talk of the sperm bank.
  • James says that his janitor's outfit is comfortable on his "nuts" (testicles).
  • Before their big sperm donation, John tells Dean he needs him to promise he isn't going to masturbate before then (he implies the word masturbate). Dean then says that they need to fill her to the brim with their pearly white sperm.
  • At the fertility clinic, a female worker hands the brothers two cups, with Dean asking if they're expected to fill them. He then says that due to a rerun of Laverne and Shirley, he couldn't help himself (meaning he masturbated), and John says he hopes Dean is multi-orgasmic (other sexually related comments are made).
  • In the sperm donation room, John and Dean try to decide which pornographic magazine to use to assist them, and we see many in the racks (the images are small, but we see female bare butts and women with their hands over their bare breasts, but other nudity may also be present). Some of the titles are mentioned, and they then choose their magazines (one titled "Jizz Junkies") and enter separate masturbation rooms. Dean, however, sneaks out shirtless to grab a National Geographic type magazine and then goes back into his room, with John then coming out, also shirtless with his pants partially undone, also after that same magazine that's no longer there.
  • John gets the news that he's sterile, prompting Dean to laugh that he's going to be the father. John then angrily replies that they'll see who's laughing when he spends zero dollars at the condom store.
  • We see Tara in a tiny bikini and she enters a hot tub, followed moments later by John in just swim trunks. She doesn't like this and thus leaves, walking away in slow-motion (with the bikini bottom only half covering her rear). John then gets out and sucks up some of the water from her footstep, followed by licking the same. We then see John and Dean sleeping separately, with John saying, "Talk about a wet dream." Dean tells his brother not to tell him each time that happens, with John replying it was a different kind of wet dream.
  • About her delivering his baby, Dean tells Janine, "By the time you poop that thing out of your baby-hole."
  • While hanging out at the park, one of the brothers says, "Look at the t*ts on that one," but we then see that he's referring to an obese boy.
  • Janine shows a little cleavage.
  • John and Dean hug while making up, and after John has stepped out of the shower, meaning he's nude (we only see his bare chest). Dean then has him wrap a towel around himself.
  • Spoiler Alert: Janine delivers a black baby, meaning she previously had sex with James.
  • About using a bungee cord for other purposes, Dean warns an expectant father to be careful because it can also be an autoerotic asphyxiation risk.
  • SMOKING
  • A miscellaneous person smokes.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • We hear that the men's mother died when both were young and were then raised by their father.
  • The men get a message from their father who says he's in the hospital. When they eventually get there, they learn that he's now in a coma and that his one regret (stated before slipping into the coma) was that he never had grandchildren (all played for comedy).
