PLOT: Alison Scott (KATHERINE HEIGL) is a single woman who's just been offered an on-air job at an entertainment-based cable TV channel. When not working, she hangs out and lives with her sister, Debbie (LESLIE MANN), her husband Pete (PAUL RUDD), and their two young kids. The couple isn't so happily married, mainly because of Debbie always complaining about Pete, so they're not exactly the best role models for Alison regarding married life. Then again, they're worlds ahead of Ben Stone (SETH ROGEN), an unemployed slacker and pot-head who's trying to launch a website -- that lists celebrity nude scenes in movies -- with his friends Jay (JAY BARUCHEL), Jonah (JONAH HILL), Jason (JASON SEGEL), and Martin (MARTIN STARR). One night, while out at a bar, Alison and Ben meet, drink, hit it off, and end up having a one-night stand. Eight weeks later, she discovers she's pregnant, decides to keep the baby, and contacts Ben to inform him that he's the father. He's initially taken aback, much like his friends, but he eventually realizes the right thing to do is be the child's father, meaning he and Alison must become a couple. As their friends and family observe from the sidelines, the unlikely duo try to forge a relationship, despite their obvious differences, as her pregnancy continues. WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT? Teenagers probably will, especially if they're fans of "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and/or anyone in the cast. WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R For sexual content, drug use and language. CAST AS ROLE MODELS: Considering what occurs in the film (casual/drunken sex, drug use, strong profanity, etc.) it's doubtful many parents would consider the major characters as good role models. OUR WORD TO PARENTS: Here's a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated comedy. Profanity consists of at least 113 "f" words, while many other expletives and plenty of colorful phrases are also uttered. All sorts of sexually related dialogue is present, much of it explicit in nature. Several sexual encounters (with movement and sounds) are present as are some brief lap dances, but all of that's played far more for comedy than eroticism. Some nudity is seen (bare breasts, butts, and thong bottoms), while partially covered nudity (still photo and live) is also present, as are varying amounts of cleavage, while some man do some mock sexual movements for laughs. A woman's genitals are seen in close-up as her baby's head starts to crown during delivery. Various comedy based bad attitudes are present, as is all sorts of drug use (pot and mushrooms) and related talk, while characters also drink. Scatological material is present (mainly in verbal form), while some behavior might be enticing for some kids to imitate. A couple has a strained marriage, while thematic elements include pregnancy from a drunken, one-night stand, talk of abortion and such. ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE One guy smokes pot inside a turned-upside down bowl, while another inhales the smoke from that via a tube. Ben smokes pot. Ben and his friends drink in a bar, as do others. When he and Alison can't separately get the bartender's attention, Ben reaches over the bar, grabs two beers, and pays for them. He gives one to Alison and then the other when she mentions her sister. He mentions to his friends, "I want to get sh*t-faced." A drug-related comment is made about coke. Alison does some sexy dancing with Ben while both are intoxicated on a bar's dance floor. Ben tells Alison that the best thing for a hangover is weed, asks her if she smokes any (she says no), and that Jonah didn't feel any pain after breaking his elbow and then smoking pot (but that his elbow still clicks). Ben and his friends smoke pot, with Ben doing so from a bong while wearing a gas mask (with the pot smoke inside it). Ben and Alison have wine. Ben smokes pot while his friends have beer. Ben tells his father he'd feel like a hypocrite telling his future child not to do drugs when he does. We then hear the father's philosophy about drugs (no pills and no powders, but if it grows in the ground, it's okay). He then admits to smoking pot in the evenings in the past. Martin and his girlfriend both appear to be high. Martin offers Alison a "toke" (hit on his joint), but she declines. Ben and Alison comment on the rules that she can't smoke (pot or cigarettes), do crack, or jump on a trampoline while pregnant, with Ben joking that he'll be the one smoking crack on the trampoline. Ben jokes with Pete's daughter that her toy bear might like some "grass" (while playing with her out in the yard). Ben tells some of Alison's friends that the moral of him getting Alison pregnant is "don't drink and bone." Ben smokes a joint. Ben has a drink while Pete and Debbie have wine. Ben smokes pot from a bong and his high when an earthquake strikes. Pete and others in his baseball fantasy league have beer. While hormonal and angry with him, Alison tells Ben to "go f*ck your f*cking bong." He then sarcastically replies he will, "doggy style." Pete and Ben have beer in a bar. All of Ben's friends save for Marty have pink eye, with them explaining it's from farting into the other's pillows "bare-assed." We then see Marty whose eyes are red, but he says, "I'm just really high." Pete tells Ben he has some mushrooms for them to ingest at a performance later that night. We then see them being amazed at the Cirque du Soleil performance, with Ben saying that he's freaking out and that the mushrooms are turning on him (Pete has the same look on his face). We see Pete and Ben carrying large drinks. We see a Bob Marley poster that shows pot use. Pete makes a joke that he shouldn't have given his kids "all that meth." Jason has a beer, and Ben lies about drinking beer and smoking pot when Jason asks him (over the phone) what he's doing. A person is told, "You're high off your ass." BLOOD/GORE Ben tells Alison that he just "yakked," and there are other comments about vomiting. Alison suffers from morning sickness while trying to do an on-air interview and rushes off-stage to vomit (we hear that). She later feels sick again and this time we see her vomit into a trashcan (wiping her mouth with a piece of paper after she's done). After Jay states he shaved his "pubes," Jason complains about the visual aftermath, adding that he "took a sh*t" and that it looked like a stuffed animal (due to the pubic hair in the water). Pete asks Debbie if they should have sex tonight, with her using the excuse that she's really constipated, but then asking if he still wants to. While doing an exam on Alison, a female gynecologist says, "That's not your vagina, that's your asshole" (meaning she's accessed the wrong body part -- not seen). Ben and Pete joke about baby goo and "puke" getting onto one's shoes. All of Ben's friends save for Marty have pink eye, with them explaining it's from farting into the other's pillows "bare-assed." We then see Marty whose eyes are red, but he says, "I'm just really high." After Debbie verbally attacks him, a club doorman says it's not his call about who gets in, saying having to enact others' decisions gives him "the runs." Wondering if she's about to go into labor while in a bubble bath, Ben asks if her water's broken (she can't tell since she's in a bath) and then if she's had her "bloody show." Ben has some audible intestinal rumblings, but nothing comes of that. As Alison gives birth, we see several quick views of the baby's head crowning from her visible genitals. Alison's newborn baby has birth goo all over it, as does a doctor's gown. DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE All of the following is played for laughs. Some viewers might not like a joke where a young girl states that she Googled "murder" and then saw photos of dead people and such (we don't see them). Some viewers might not like repeated jokes about Martin's beard making him look like a terrorist and such. Those who offer Alison an on-air job on her cable network (a man and woman) don't directly tell her to lose weight for the position, but make it clear that's what's needed. Jason playfully continues to come on to Debbie despite knowing she's married with kids. When the guys get an email from Alison saying she needs to talk to Ben, he jokes, "Someone wants seconds" and a friend adds, "Somebody wants another piece" and "She likka the way your d*ck tastes." During this, Ben stands and holds Jason's head doing some mock thrusting to it, while the rest also mock sexual activity (including male to female oral sex, male masturbation, and male thrusting -- all are fully clothed). One of Ben's friends not so subtly tells him Alison needs to get an abortion (using the code language "sm-smorshin"). When Jay says no, that he'd rear the child, Jason jokingly replies (in an anal sex joke), "He wants to rear your child." Alison's mom tells her to "take care of" her unexpected pregnancy, saying that's what Debbie did before then having a real baby. Ben and Alison passionately kiss, with him saying he guesses they don't need a condom. When she's upset about that, he says he thought they could have a little fun. She then asks what he'd expect of a second date if she weren't pregnant, and he replies, "A B-J" (blowjob). That out of the way, they make out some more. Ben plays "fetch" with Debbie's daughter (throwing something and making her get it and bring it back to him -- which the girl thinks is fun). Some viewers might not like Pete's casual response to his wife's concerns about sex offenders living nearby. Debbie operates from the philosophy of criticizing someone enough to make them change their ways. Debbie secretly installs monitoring software on Pete's computer (to see what he's doing). Alison learns that Ben hasn't read any of the baby books they bought and has instead put them away. Thinking Pete is cheating on her, Debbie follows him (along with Ben and Alison) and then enters a house without permission thinking they'll catch him in the act. While hormonal and angry with him, Alison yells at Ben and makes him get out of her car in a part of the city with which he isn't familiar. When a club doorman won't let Debbie and Alison into a club (while allowing younger women in), Debbie lets the man have it, calling him a "f*cking little fag" and much more. We see Alison doing red carpet interviews while very pregnant, with Andy Dick asking if she's dilated yet and he then puts his hand down toward her clothed crotch. Alison's female boss/supervisor has a bad attitude about and toward her. A character in a movie within the movie asks the question, "Are you retarded." Jay does a synthesized voice while sitting in a wheelchair in the hospital (presumably imitating Stephen Hawking), while he and Marty bump each other in such chairs. FRIGHTENING SCENES An earthquake strikes and everyone reacts and then runs outside into the night (a brief scene where no one is in peril). An alarm sounds with a rise in the heartbeat rate of Alison's still unborn baby, and the doctor mentions they'll have to induce labor since the umbilical chord is around the baby's neck (everything turns out okay). Pete tells Ben he thought there was a lot of money in porn (referring to Ben's yet-to-be launched website). Pete then mentions a similar site that also lists nude scenes in films, with us later seeing a screen shot that mentions the best group shower scenes (no nude images are seen). Discussing how men and women view the inevitability of things differently, Ben and Pete joke about Doc Brown from the "Back to the Future" movies time traveling and how they'd change Alison's pregnancy: "I would put a condom on Ben's d*ck." Debbie is mad about his mindset, and thus tells the two to "go back in time and f*ck each other." TENSE FAMILY SCENES Pete and Debbie have a strained marriage, particularly since she thinks he's cheating on her. We later learn he lied to her about his nightly activities, but it's about fantasy baseball games (no sex involved with the all male crew) that he thought she'd be mad about if he told her the truth. We hear that Ben's dad has been divorced three times. TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT One night stands, especially when alcohol is involved. Unwed and unexpected pregnancies. Drug use. Alison's mom tells her to "take care of" her unexpected pregnancy, saying that's what Debbie did before then having a real baby. Ben's father telling him that life is about stuff happening to you and then just dealing with it. Ben tells his father he'd feel like a hypocrite telling his future child not to do drugs when he does. We then hear the father's philosophy about drugs (no pills and no powders, but if it grows in the ground, it's okay). We hear that Pete married Debbie because she was pregnant. Debbie operates from the philosophy of criticizing someone enough to make them change their ways. The discussion regarding how men and women view the inevitability of things differently (meaning guys would go back and change things). Pete saying marriage is like an unfunny version of the TV sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond." The notion of people in relationships trying to train their significant other into behaving the way they want them to. VIOLENCE Pete's young kid accidentally whacks him on his covered crotch in bed. Debbie's oldest daughter throws a baby doll that hits her younger sister on the head.
