QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: Thinking he's still a kid after waking up from a 20-year coma that started in 1986, a young man tries to reunite his former breakdancing group to compete for big money and the chance at winning back the girl from his childhood dreams who's now engaged to his former rival.
PLOT:
Back in 1986, Justin Schumacher and his friends were just kids, but they were good breakdancers. During a contest against Kip Unger and his crew, and hoping to impress young Jennifer Stone, Justin tried a dangerous move, fell off the stage, and ended up in a coma that lasted twenty years.

Luckily for him, just when his parents -- Marty (CHRISTOPHER McDONALD) and Sylvia (DEBRA JO RUPP) -- have decided to "pull the plug," Justin (JAMIE KENNEDY) hears some retro music that snaps him out of the coma. Thinking he's still a kid but now in an adult's body and unaware of the cultural and technological changes that have taken place over the past two decades, Justin finds himself a fish out of water.

Learning that his parents are going to lose their home due to his high medical expenses, and wanting to win dance instructor Jennifer (MARIA MENOUNOS) back from dance promoter Kip (MICHAEL ROSENBAUM), Justin reunites the rest of his breakdancing squad -- Darnell Jackson (MIGUEL A. NUNEZ JR.), Aki Terasaki (BOBBY LEE) and Hector Jimenez (ARIS ALVARADO).

Aware of Kip's dance-off competition where the winning purse is $100,000, Justin wants them to compete, but his childhood friends are now early middle-aged men who haven't done any breakdancing for decades. Nevertheless, and as they try to bring him up to speed on all that he's missed -- including how to date women -- Justin hopes not only to win the contest, but also Jennifer's heart, all within the mindset of the kid he still thinks he is.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Unless they're fans of Jamie Kennedy or breakdancing, it doesn't seem too likely.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For crude and sexual content and language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • JAMIE KENNEDY plays a thirty-something man who's just come out of a 20-year coma and still thinks he's a kid in the 1980s. Wanting to win a dance contest as well as Jennifer's heart, he reunites his childhood breakdancing team for the competition. Along the way, he's brought up to speed about what he's missed, and fools around some with Jennifer.
  • MARIA MENOUNOS plays his former childhood sweetheart wannabe who's grown into an attractive dance instructor who's now engaged to Kip. Charmed by Justin's innocence and naiveté, she starts to fall for him while growing tired of Kip's boorish ways. She fools around with Justin despite being engaged to Kip.
  • MIGUEL A. NUNEZ JR. plays one of Justin's now grownup childhood friends who tries to bring him up to speed about all that he's missed, including a sexual education. He uses profanity.
  • BOBBY LEE plays another former member of their team who isn't sure of their chances, and has trained himself out of Asian ethnic stereotypes, but easily falls back into them. He briefly uses strong profanity.
  • ARIS ALVARADO plays the last member of their team, an overweight meter maid who takes to dressing up like a woman during dating simulations for Justin.
  • MICHAEL ROSENBAUM plays Jennifer's condescending fiancé, a dance producer of some sort who isn't happy to see Justin's return and does what he can to undermine him. He uses profanity.
  • CHRISTOPHER McDONALD plays Justin's dad who's impatient for his son to get with his chores despite having just come out of a 20-year coma.
  • DEBRA JO RUPP plays his wife who wants to over-mother Justin when he comes back home.

Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this comedy that's been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of at least 1 "f" word, while other expletives and colorful phrases are uttered. Sexually related dialogue is present, as is all sorts of other sexually related material, including men looking at porn on a computer (we don't see it).

Some making out occurs (with a woman exposing her bra-covered or bare breasts to a man-child - we don't see them), while some men's bare butts are briefly seen, as are some scantly clad women, as is some sexualized dancing.

Some characters strike others, while slapstick style material is also present. Various bits of behavior might be enticing for some kids to imitate, while all sorts of bad attitudes are present. Crude humor (vomiting, other bodily functions) occurs, as does brief drinking.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there are varying amounts of camera movement in the film.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Kip sends Justin off to get a drink in a club where some miscellaneous characters drink.
  • Sylvia wants to put Justin on Ritalin, and then thinks that maybe she should take some herself.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • Hector says that in his job as a meter maid, he's been shot at and peed on.
  • An old, homeless man passes out on some cardboard, farts, and we then see his urine running across the cardboard.
  • Telling Justin he didn't miss anything by missing prom, Jennifer says that they don't tell you about getting your period in a white dress. Justin then says if he had taken her, he would have gotten her flowers to match the color of her period.
  • From nerves, Justin does some copious projectile vomiting onto a dance opponent.
  • Upset with himself, Justin says a cake looks like "doody" and "crap." He then grabs a handful, makes fake farting sounds, and then slings the dark cake around the restaurant.
  • An old man urinates toward competitors and then his teammates on the dance floor (we see the urine stream and everyone fleeing).
  • A person punches and knocks out Kip. An older homeless man then goes out and lies on top of him (both are clothed), farts and we then see his urine running across Kip's shirt and chest.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Various disparaging material about homosexuality is present such as "Who are these gay birds?" Kips says, "You're a fag." Kip sends Justin off to get a drink in a club, saying the drinks are the fruitiest (knowing he's sending him off to the gay side of the club). Justin keeps calling "frontsies" to the bartender, but a leather-clad gay man turns and corrects him by saying "No, backsies" (meaning anal sex). Seeing three of the guys, Kip says, "If it isn't Larry, Curly, and Homo." A person in the crowd raises a sign that reads, "Kip's a fag."
  • Various disparaging comments are made regarding people with mental conditions, such as Kip asking if Justin was "retarded" before the coma. That same term is used again, and Kip refers to the dancers as "dance 'tards." Someone says, "He's a total homo jerk wad." Upset with himself, Justin states, "I feel like a retard," prompting a mentally challenged person (in a costumed character outfit, while wearing protective headgear) to says that's not nice and then attack Justin, banging him back against a wall. Kips asks another person, "What, are you frickin' retarded?" prompting the above person (dressed the same way) to punch and thus knock him out. In the end credits, it's said that Kip is now "retarded" from being punched earlier.
  • Ethnic stereotyping (an Asian character, a Middle-Eastern one, etc.) occurs in the film.
  • Young Kip has a bad attitude toward young Justin.
  • Justin's parents decide to "pull the plug" on his life support while he's in a coma, and briefly appear upset about that. Yet, his dad says, "The kid's a vegetable" with his mom adding she's going to miss "that turnip."
  • Despite Justin being weak from having just come out of his 20-year coma, Marty wants his son to do his chores since Marty's been doing them for all of that time.
  • Some viewers might not like Darnell telling Justin that it's okay to use the term "nigger" now. Thus, Justin enthusiastically tells him, "You're a good nigger" and "You're the best nigger I ever had."
  • Adult Kip is a jerk toward most everyone every time he appears on screen (including being mean to Justin, condescending toward Jennifer despite her being his fiancée, etc.).
  • Various strangers laugh at Justin as he does his retro dancing.
  • Some viewers might not like mistaken pedophilia used as comedy.
  • Darnell's wife or girlfriend is mad at him for not getting enough diapers.
  • Seeing how obese Hector has become, Darnell says it's him or the dude who ate him.
  • Aki's childhood friends want him to say "booby trap" with a stereotypical Asian accent so that it sounds like "booty twaps" (or something like that). He then goes on about them not becoming his friends in the past until the movie "Sixteen Candles" came out with a funny Asian character in it.
  • Darnell refers to Aki's Asian coworker as Lucy Liu.
  • Aki tells his boss, "F*ck you Mr. Ferguson," but then says he was joking.
  • Justin's dad tells him, "You have seriously f-ed up my Tivo."
  • Darnell shows he's made a Jewish version of the Rubik's cube called the Jews Cube or something like that. The guys look at it and note the dollar signs on it, as well as the "d*ck" (which we don't see), with Darnell saying it's a circumcised penis.
  • Jennifer cheats on Kip with Justin by making out with him and exposing her bra-covered or bare chest to him.
  • Seeing the number 9 on Aki's shirt, Kip comments on that, and then asks Hector (about his food) if that's ten (meaning the tenth thing he's eaten) and then calls him "fatty."
  • Several dance competitors purposefully bump Aki (who's Asian), with one calling him "Egg roll."
  • Some viewers might not like one dance contestant walking out crouched over arm braces that turn out to be just props.
  • Darnell asks a diminutive competitor, "What's up, chicken little?"
  • Justin comments about how rap has change from the way it was to now being about slapping women (among other things), with Aki smiling about that.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Thinking he's picking up a fake, rubber cockroach, Justin accidentally picks up the real thing that wiggles around in his hand.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • None.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR

I'm not a whore," "You're like a sex machine animal," "He's never gonna get laid," "I touched a booby," "Gag me with a big ego and a little d*ck," "He's got more balls than you'll ever have," "Take your good bitch, bad bitch routine and stick it up your schnutzi" (or something like that), "I pity the fool," "You were way cool out there," "Psych," "Goober," "It's wicked expensive," "Don't be such a spaz," "Bogus," "Little bitch," "What you talkin' 'bout, Willis?" "Don't feed the animal," "Hell no," "Before I beat his ass," "Get out," "Snot," "Fool," "Who the hell are you?" "I'm a grown-ass man," "Black ass," "Bitch-slapped," "Comatose bitch," "No freakin' way," "C'mon bitch," "So damn funny," "Home-boys forever," "Yo, hammer-pants," "Shut up," "You look like C3P0 with R2D2 stuck up his ass," "Señor coma," "You're a fag," "You're a jerk," "Before I punch you in the head like a rock 'em, sock 'em robot," "Retarded," "Dance 'tards," "Smoke 'em if you've got 'em," "He's a total homo jerk wad," "Fatty," "Say it, don't spray it," "You just got served," "Doody," "Loser," "I feel like a retard," "What the hell's that mean?" "If it isn't Larry, Curly and homo," "What's up, chicken little?" "Go show those player-haters who's bad," "Kip's a fag" (seen written), "Pasty white ass" and "What, are you frickin' retarded?"
  • Young Jennifer does a Flashdance performance where she dances about in her bikini bottom and tank-top before sitting in the chair, pulling the chain, and having water dump down onto her.
  • The various dances moves might be enticing for some kids to imitate, as might other behavior the characters exhibit (mainly referring to the goofy material).
  • At various points in the film, we see bare midriffs.
  • To show she's wearing his engagement ring, Kip lifts Jennifer's finger, but gets the middle one, thus giving Justin "the finger."
  • Another dancer runs toward a wall and does a flip off it.
  • Jennifer has her shirt tied up, exposing her bare midriff and her pierced navel.
  • Some miscellaneous people have tattoos.
  • Upset with himself, Justin says a cake looks like "doody" and "crap." He then grabs a handful, makes fake farting sounds, and then slings the dark cake around the restaurant.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • None.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • None.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • Various songs had lyrics we couldn't fully hear and/or understand, thus presenting the possibility of them potentially containing objectionable material.
  • A song has a lyric about the "first time I got some ass."
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 1 "f" word (2 others are abbreviated as "f-ed" and "f-ing"), 11 "s" words, 2 slang terms for sex ("laid" and "mack"), 3 using male genitals ("d*ck"), 2 using female ones ("schnutzi" or something similar to that), 3 for breasts ("booby" and "breastsises"), 16 hells, 12 asses (1 used with "hole"), 7 damns, 3 craps, 18 uses of "Oh my God," 3 of "Jesus," 2 of "God" and 1 use each of "Jesus Christ" and "Oh God."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • Young Jennifer does a Flashdance performance where she dances about in her bikini bottom and tank-top before sitting in the chair, pulling the chain, and having water dump down onto her.
  • Young Kip wonders if he gets a thank you kiss from young Jennifer for a gift, and thus closes his eyes, opens his mouth, and wiggles his tongue around (she kisses him on the cheek). Later, she tells Justin that Kip thinks he can buy his way into her bra.
  • Marty puts his hand down to Sylvia's clothed butt as they walk along.
  • Adult Justin goes into a toy store, and thinking he's still a kid himself, chats with another kid. His comments are innocent, but the film plays them up as pedophilia related. They include him telling the boy he can get in his foxhole or vice-versa, "Don't make me pull out my nightstick" and other such comments.
  • Jennifer shows some cleavage upon meeting Justin for the first time in 20 years, and he stares at her body, commenting in awe about how she really grew up.
  • After making Jennifer wave good-bye to Justin with her flopping hand, Kip suggestively jokes that she can use that hand for something else later.
  • Aki's coworker shows some cleavage, and Darnell asks what percentage chance Aki has of sleeping with her. She replies zero, but then changes that to two percent when Darnell mentions the breakdancing. She then lowers the number down to one percent when she hears their name, but Aki is still pleased with that chance.
  • We see some sexualized dancing in a club, notably a man with his clothed crotch at the woman's clothed butt as both move rhythmically. Later, we see a woman standing behind Justin doing the same to him.
  • We see a shirtless male dancer.
  • Kip sends Justin off to get a drink in a club, saying the drinks are the fruitiest (knowing he's sending him off to the gay side of the club). Justin keeps calling "frontsies" to the bartender, but a leather-clad gay man turns and corrects him by saying "No, backsies" (meaning anal sex).
  • We see varying amounts of miscellaneous cleavage at various points in the film.
  • Emmanuel Lewis tells Justin that he "macks hos" (whores) five times a week.
  • We see Justin seated in a bubble bath. After his parents enter the bathroom to talk to him, he becomes upset and stands, with just his hand barely covering his crotch. He then rushes out, and we see full and side views of his bare butt.
  • Darnell shows he's made a Jewish version of the Rubik's cube called the Jews Cube or something like that. The guys look at it and note the dollar signs on it, as well as the "d*ck" (which we don't see), with Darnell saying it's a circumcised penis.
  • Justin taps Hector on the floor to wake him up, prompting Hector to start humping the floor (clothed).
  • Darnell tells Justin to tell him everything he knows about the female anatomy, and then mentions something about "the intimate." We then see the two men starring at a computer screen (we only see their faces) as Justin looks in awe, commenting on midgets, cheese whiz, that's not how they're supposed to play Twister, and that bodies aren't supposed to do that. Darnell then says, "She's got a nice ass."
  • Kip opens his jacket so that his bare chest is exposed (he nearly does this again, but catches himself doing so and stops).
  • Jennifer has her shirt tied up, exposing her bare midriff and her pierced navel.
  • The guys have Justin do some dating practice, with Hector dressed up like a woman in a wig. When Hector asks Justin if "she's" pretty, Justin doesn't respond, with Hector then blurting out, "You think I'm a whore" and "I'm not a whore." Justin then drops his pants and the others react adversely (we don't see anything), with a comment being made about him shaving and him saying that's what people do on the Internet (referring to dropping his pants). We then see Hector in a bra, with the other guys trying to teach Justin how to grope a woman's breasts in one (they have differing techniques, all resulting in Hector's chest and nipples being manhandled in that bra). Justin naively asks how he did, with one replying he's a sex machine animal. Darnell then says, "Smoke 'em if you've got 'em," and once Justin leaves, it's said that Justin will "never get laid" and will die a virgin. Later, actor David Hasselhoff arrives and rubs his fingers together, imitating playing a little violin (replicating what Aki did earlier, meaning how to manipulate the nipple).
  • As Justin and Jennifer passionately make out in the talking car from the TV show "Knight Rider," the car states it's glad David (Hasselhoff) had the seats Scotchguarded. Jennifer then opens her shirt toward Justin, but we don't see anything beyond the glow of her presumably bra-covered or bare chest illuminating his face. He's in awe and says he'll never play video games again as he reaches out to touch her breasts and does so (we don't see the contact), but a phone call interrupts them and nothing else happens. Later, Justin tells another man that he touched a "booby" and made it jiggle, etc.
  • A restaurant logo image looks like an erect penis and testicles (it's not that, but the shape is the same).
  • Justin and his team remove their shirts when he prepares to compete against another male dancer who's removed his shirt. They're still shirtless in a later scene in a different locale.
  • Some female dance contestants wear bras (or bikini tops that show cleavage), small shorts, and high boots. Hector and the others then grab their previously discarded shirts and whip them back and forth across their butts, with us briefly and partially seeing Hector's bare butt.
  • After Kip is condescending to her, Jennifer tells him, "Gag me with a big ego and a small dick." She then says that Justin has "more balls" than Kip, with the latter asking if that means three or what.
  • Jennifer is told to take an attitude and stick it up her "schnutzi" (or something sounding like that). That draws the attention of an old man, while Jennifer says she's afraid to ask what that means, with the old man lecherously saying he'll tell her (but he doesn't).
  • Justin says that maybe he should do office things, like making copies, although not of your butt.
  • Aki does a "Karate Kid" type thing imitating Pat Morita saying where the talent lies in one's body. As he points to various places on his friends, he means to touch one's belt, but accidentally touches the guy's crotch.
  • During a dance contest, Hector pulls up the front of his shirt to show he's still wearing the bra (from above). He then makes a twisting motion over his own covered nipple.
  • Kip incredulously asks about having to wait many more years to get in Jennifer's pants.
  • Justin and Jennifer do some passionate kissing while clothed and standing.
  • In the end credits, we see that Aki married his coworker, with the wording saying that increased his odds of sleeping with her to three percent.
  • In the end credits, it's said something about Hector now being into cross-dressing.
  • A song has a lyric about the "first time I got some ass."
  • SMOKING
  • None, but after some dating/sexual simulation for Justin, Darnell jokingly states, "Smoke 'em if you've got 'em."
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • Justin's parents decide to "pull the plug" on his life support while he's in a coma, and briefly appear upset about that. Yet, his dad says, "The kid's a vegetable" with his mom adding she's going to miss "that turnip."
  • Justin hears that his parents will lose their house due to his previous medical bills.
  • Darnell's wife or girlfriend is mad at him for not getting enough diapers.
  • Justin's dad tells him, "You have seriously f-ed up my Tivo."
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Breakdancing.
  • Comas and the related talk of "pulling the plug."
  • Some viewers might not like Darnell telling Justin that it's okay to use the term "nigger" now. Thus, Justin enthusiastically tells him, "You're a good nigger" and "You're the best nigger I ever had."
  • Justin hears that his parents will lose their house due to his previous medical bills.
  • VIOLENCE
  • While trying an elaborate dance move, Justin falls off the stage and lands hard on the floor (played for comedy, but he's unconscious and then in a coma from that for 20 years).
  • A small fire breaks out on the bedding covering Justin in his hospital bed (from birthday cake candles), with his dad slamming the cake down onto that and his mom then sitting on that.
  • After coming out of his coma, Justin tries to stand, but his weak legs send him falling to the floor. Later, he falls out of the car when arriving home, as well as while painting, while we see several views of him being pulled along behind the lawn mower.
  • Sylvia falls to the floor after fainting.
  • Thinking he's a pedophile, a security guard tackles Justin to the floor.
  • Darnell slaps Justin.
  • Darnell's wife or girlfriend slaps him. We then see him smashing Justin up against a wall, presumably from that woman pushing both out the door.
  • Darnell and Hector accidentally bump each other while practicing dancing.
  • Thinking a dancer is having a seizure (he isn't), Justin tackles him to the floor to restrain him.
  • Justin and Darnell do some dance practicing where Darnell accidentally gets hit on the head.
  • Upset to learn that Jennifer's not going steady with him, Justin violently smashes a pencil and eraser with one of those padded arcade "hammers."
  • Upset with himself, Justin states, "I feel like a retard," prompting a mentally challenged person (in a costumed character outfit, while wearing protective headgear) to says that's not nice and then attack Justin, banging him back against a wall.
  • Several dance competitors purposefully bump Aki as they pass by.
  • Kip pushes his deejay aside, causing that man to slide off an elevated platform down to one below it.
  • A person punches and knocks out Kip.
