QUICK TAKE:
Action: A highly trained hitman tries to figure out what went wrong when his latest seemingly killed target ends up not so dead after all.
PLOT:
Agent 47 (TIMOTHY OLYPHANT) is a professional assassin who's been trained since he was a boy to be the best at his profession. Working for a company called The Agency, he receives his assignments via computer, and is so proficient that Interpol agent Mike Whittier (DOUGRAY SCOTT) and his partner Jenkins (MICHAEL OFFEI) feel an urgency to find, capture and stop him.

The apparent assassination of Russian President Mikhail Belicoff (ULRICH THOMSEN) leads them to St. Petersburg, but separately they and Agent 47 are shocked to see Belicoff alive and well despite all too visibly being shot in the head earlier. Things get more complicated for the hitman when he's sent to take out Nika Boronina (OLGA KURYLENKO), a supposed witness of him at the shooting.

But when she doesn't show any recognition of him, and then a sniper tries to shoot him, Agent 47 goes on the run, determined to figure out what's going on. As Mike and Jenkins run into resistance from Russian special agent Yuri Marklov (ROBERT KNEPPER), Agent 47 abducts Nika -- the President's slave girlfriend -- and then goes to see Mikhail's drug and gun dealer brother, Udre (HENRY IAN CUSICK), in the belief that one of them might be able to give him some information.

With the body counting rising and the Interpol agents hot on his trail, Agent 47 uses every trick in his professional book to get to the bottom of this conspiracy, all while avoiding those who want to capture or kill him.

WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
At the time of this publication, no official reason was listed by the MPAA or the official movie website, but it's obviously for violence, profanity, sexuality, and nudity.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • TIMOTHY OLYPHANT plays a professional hitman who's highly proficient in his line of work. When his latest target apparently doesn't stay dead and he then finds himself as a target, he tries to get to the bottom of what's occurring, all while avoiding and outwitting most everyone. He kills many people and uses profanity.
  • DOUGRAY SCOTT plays an Interpol agent who's hot on his trail, determined to catch him, but runs into resistance from Yuri and other Russian figures. He uses strong profanity and smokes.
  • OLGA KURYLENKO plays Belicoff's slave girlfriend, possibly a real-life prostitute, who becomes Agent 47's unwilling captive and then something of his tag-along partner as he tries to figure out what's going on. She smokes, tries to have sex with Agent 47, and uses some strong profanity.
  • ROBERT KNEPPER plays a Russian special agent who smokes, is not happy with Mike there on the case, and uses strong profanity.
  • ULRICH THOMSEN plays the Russian president who seemingly somehow comes back from being shot in the head by Agent 47.
  • HENRY IAN CUSICK plays Mikhail's criminal brother who deals in illegal firearms and drugs, and holds a gun on one of his sexual playthings.
  • MICHAEL OFFEI plays Mike's Interpol partner who similarly tries to catch the assassin and uses strong profanity in the process.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
Here's a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated action pic. Profanity consists of at least 16 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue is present, as is a woman trying to seduce a man (with nudity, movement and some undressing), who earlier appears before him in just a small thong, while other views of scantly clad women are also seen.

Violence includes people killing many others via various means (gunfire, explosions, impalement, etc.), most of which is bloody and/or gory to varying degrees. Those scenes and moments of potential peril might be unsettling and/or suspenseful to some viewers, while the action and other behavior might be enticing for some kids to imitate.

Various bad attitudes are present, as is some drinking, smoking, and brief drug use. If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there is some of that from gunfire as well as brief lightning.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there are varying amounts of camera movement, including that of the bouncy, hand-held variety, as well as some spin around camera shots.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Agent 47 has a drink, and a female stranger walks up carrying a glass of champagne and comments on him putting too much ice in with the Scotch.
  • We hear that Udre is a drug and gun dealer.
  • Nika has wine in front of her.
  • Miscellaneous people have drinks in a restaurant where Nika has wine. As a waiter passes by, Agent 47 grabs a drink on it, pretending it's his, but does so to put something in it that then makes the recipient (Agent 47's next target) sick.
  • Agent 47 enters Udre's headquarters and we see people drinking, one rubbing his nose (presumably from just having done coke), and another snorting coke.
  • Belicoff drinks from a flask and then throws that at Yuri.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • We see a bloody human skull.
  • We see a bloody man being dragged into building, and then his body later exploding from a bomb inside it.
  • Agent 47's next target is Belicoff, and he hits one person with sniper fire (with blood and other matter spraying onto bystanders) before hitting the Russian president in the forehead with the next shot (we briefly see a small hole there).
  • Agent 47 is sent on his next assignment where he spots Nika, but a person by him is suddenly shot (with bloody results).
  • We see playback footage of the assassination of Belicoff, with blood spraying out onto others.
  • We hear the sound of gunfire, and when an elevator door opens, we see many dead and bloody bodies on the floor (while blood is also on the walls and elsewhere).
  • A man who Agent 47 shoots is somewhat bloody.
  • We see a bruise on Mike's bare chest from where Agent 47's bullet hit his bulletproof vest.
  • We see a man vomiting into a toilet.
  • Agent 47 goes into a public bathroom, shoots one bodyguard in the head (with blood splattering out everywhere), grabs his target and jabs a syringe into his neck, and then shoots two more bodyguards as they come in. We also see a pool of blood on the floor from the first man who was shot.
  • Agent 47 gets into a massive gun battle with various goons, and the wounded and dead are bloody to varying degrees.
  • We see several severed limbs in a morgue, where feet stick out from sheets covering otherwise unseen dead bodies.
  • Yuri's clothing is bloody after he's struck and abducted by Agent 47.
  • Agent 47 shoots many people with a machine gun, with varying degrees of bloody results.
  • A man's face is bloody after Agent 47 punches him.
  • Belicoff has some blood around his neck, and he is much bloodier after he's shot both by Agent 47 and then a Russian helicopter gunship.
  • We see a dead man on the floor with a bloody bullet hole wound in his head.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • The film's villains obviously have bad attitudes, while Agent 47 is a professional assassin who kills people for money.
  • Various Russian officials clash with and/or get in the way of Mike and his Interpol attempts of finding and stopping Agent 47.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence" and/or "Blood/Gore" may be unsettling or suspenseful to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material.
  • Agent 47 holds his gun on Mike at the latter's house, when Mike comes home and partially stumbles on a dead body on his floor.
  • We see various armed men in Niger, and they hit and drag one bloody man into a building, where they string him up. The leader holds a machete at the man, who tries to talk but can't due to stitches down around his throat. The leader then realizes what is occurring, but it is too late, as the unseen bomb inside the man explodes and presumably kills everyone there.
  • Agent 47's next target is Belicoff, and he hits one person with sniper fire (with blood and other matter spraying onto bystanders) before hitting the Russian president in the forehead with the next shot (we briefly see a small hole there).
  • Armed men come looking for Agent 47, and when they open his hotel door, a booby-trap there sets off an explosion that blows those men backwards. The fiery blast also comes towards him, and he dives for the balcony, grabs hold of the rope that he previously tied there, and then swings down and crashes through a window below his room. He then retrieves two handguns and shoots two men dead, and then gets on top of an elevator car. We then hear the sound of gunfire, and when the elevator door opens, we see many dead and bloody bodies on the floor (while blood is also on the walls and elsewhere). Mike then aims his gun at Agent 47, but a maid gets in the way, allowing him to escape. He kicks open a door and Mike fires at him, but Agent 47 then jumps out the hotel window into a body of water and escapes again.
  • Agent 47 grabs Nika and holds his gun on her. He then forces her into the trunk of his car along with a dead body that we do not see.
  • Agent 47 grabs Jenkins and they struggle over a gun that fires. Agent 47 then controls the agent, and holds his gun to his head, with Mike then aiming his gun at him. Agent 47 then shoots Mike in the torso and hits Jenkins on the head with his gun, knocking him out. Agent 47 then walks up and nearly shoots Mike, but Nika pleads for him not to and thus he spares the agent's life.
  • A Russian man holds a machine gun on Mike.
  • Agent 47 enters Udre's headquarters and we see scantily clad women, one of which Udre grabs and points a small gun against her eye to prove a point for a gun buyer. Agent 47 accuses Udre of selling counterfeit weapons, prompting Udre to fire a shot next to Agent 47. Agent 47 then throws a gun that hits Udre on the head, sets off a small explosive, and then grabs two machine guns and shoots many people dead. That continues and turns into a massive gun battle between him and various people there, who fire back at him with handguns and machine guns. Agent 47 is unharmed, but he wounds or kills many people, with varying degrees of bloody results, while a second explosion wounds or kills even more people. Agent 47 then shoots and kills the wounded and bloody Udre, but we don't see the impact.
  • The lights go out around Yuri, and he slowly walks through dimly lit areas, with his gun drawn. Agent 47 then grabs him around the neck and knocks him over a railing out of sight. The next thing we see is Yuri bloody and chained in a bathtub filled with water and attached to an electrical generator. Agent 47 tells him that he has a limited amount of time to order the killing of a villain or else the generator will kick on and kill him. Agent 47 then leaves, and we see the clock ticking down, with Yuri panicking as it gets closer to zero.
  • Agent 47 shoots a man dead, followed by a Russian helicopter gunship opening fire on the tower where they're located, riddling the place with a tremendous amount of gunfire that causes property damage and also repeatedly hits the dead body.
  • Mike and his men arrest Agent 47 at gunpoint, but as they are driving down the road, other armed men cut them off and stop them at gunpoint.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Handguns/Machine guns/Sniper rifles/Swords/Spear/Explosives: Carried and/or used to threaten, wound, and/or kill many people and/or cause property damage. See "Violence" for details.
  • We see a young Agent 47 holding a handgun during his training.
  • We hear that Udre is a drug and gun dealer.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "You're telling me to f*ck off?" "How about go f*ck yourself?" "You don't want to f*ck me and you don't want to kill me. I've never felt so much indifference in my life," "That was a royal f*cking mess," "You f*ck," "What the f*ck /do you want me to do?" "F*ck him," "F*cking do it now," "Full of sh*t," "I'm not a whore by choice," "I don't know, do you think we have time for foreplay?" "You pr*ck," "Where the hell did they get a..?" "Why the hell..?" "Don't be dramatic," "You're really quite charming when you're not killing people," "You bastard" and "Who the hell are you?"
  • All of the fighting, stunts, and other action might be enticing for some kids to imitate.
  • We see a person with a tattoo on their hand putting barcode tattoos on the backs of the various young boys' heads, including that of young Agent 47.
  • After a man asks Nika, "How much?" (referring to her being or just looking like a prostitute) she gives him "the finger."
  • Nika has a dragon tattoo on her face (and she tells Agent 47 that she did so knowing that's where Belicoff would not then strike her).

  • SEX/NUDITY
  • We see Agent 47 in the shower, but don't see anything explicit due to the steam built up on the shower door from the mid-chest level down.
  • After a man asks Nika, "How much?" (referring to her being or just looking like a prostitute) she gives him "the finger."
  • We see Nika in a very short dress.
  • Nika tells Agent 47, "I'm not a whore by choice," adding that she was Belicoff's property (she says this while still in her very short dress that also shows cleavage).
  • Nika tells Agent 47, "You don't want to f*ck me and you don't want to kill me. I've never felt so much indifference in my life."
  • Nika gets out of bed and walks into the same room where Agent 47 is, wearing only a very small thong. Thus, we see full frontal and rear views of her dressed this way (meaning bare breasts and most of her bare butt), and Agent 47 can't help but stare at her. She then jokingly says she won't bite unless he pays her to.
  • We see the shape of Nika's nipples under her blouse.
  • Nika wears a dress that shows her bare back.
  • To test Agent 47's powers of observation, Nika asks him what color underwear she is wearing under her dress, with him replying she isn't wearing any.
  • Nika seductively tells Agent 47 to undress her as she stands before him while he sits on the bed. She puts her mostly bare leg up alongside him and playfully tells him to be careful as she is not wearing any panties. She then pushes him back onto the bed and straddles him in her dress, with Agent 47 saying this is not a good idea, and her doing various things (lowering her top, undoing his pants, etc.) to play up and repeat that point. During this, we see her bare breasts, and her somewhat grinding away on his crotch, and then leaning down to kiss on his neck, which is when he injects something into hers that renders her unconscious. He then gets up and we see her lying unconscious on the bed (and see her bare breasts).
  • Agent 47 enters Udre's headquarters and we see scantily clad women, some of who show cleavage.
  • We see Nika asleep in bed with the sheet down around her waist, but we don't see anything more explicit than her bare back and side due to the positioning of her arms and the camera angle.
  • We seek Nika in a sheer top that somewhat shows her bare breasts, and she also has on small pants or panties.
  • About a suitcase ad, Agent 47 states the product is good for carrying his guns, as well as a gag that he uses on talkative little girls (referring to Nika). He then asks if he should get it out, with her playfully replying, "I don't know, do you think we have time for foreplay?"

  • We see various armed men in Niger, and they hit and drag one bloody man into a building, where they string him up. The leader holds a machete at the man, who tries to talk but can't due to stitches down around his throat.
