QUICK TAKE:
Horror: After escaping from an asylum for the criminally insane, a homicidal giant returns to his hometown where he started his killing spree, as a 10-year-old, by killing some of his family.
PLOT:
Michael Myers (DAEG FAERCH) is a troubled, 10-year-old kid. Growing up in a white trash family in Haddonfield, Illinois, he must put up with put-downs by his older sister, Judith (HANNA HALL), and verbal abuse by their stepfather, Ronnie (WILLIAM FORSYTHE), who isn't above cussing out their mother, Deborah (SHERI MOON), a stripper at a local club.

When it appears the boy has been taking out his frustrations by killing animals, child psychologist Dr. Samuel Loomis (MALCOLM McDOWELL) is called in, but it's too late. Upset that he isn't taken out trick or treating, he kills Ronnie, Judith and her boyfriend, and then calmly waits for the police to arrive while holding his unharmed infant sister in his lap. Convicted and then committed for his crimes, Michael seems blasé about his murderous acts, a point that greatly disturbs Loomis.

The years pass, however, and with no progress delving into Michael's psyche, Loomis gives up on Michael (TYLER MANE) who's now grown into a hulking but mute man who spends his time fashioning various masks, a need stemming from his childhood to cover up his previously self-proclaimed ugliness. After killing much of the security detail at the sanatorium, Michael escapes and returns to his hometown where he hopes to find his baby sister.

She's now grown up into high school senior Laurie Strode (SCOUT TAYLOR-COMPTON) who isn't dating anyone, but lives variously through her best friends, Annie (DANIELLE HARRIS) and Lynda (KRISTINA KLEBE) who mock Michael when they see him hanging out in the neighborhood, not realizing who he is or what he's capable of doing.

As Loomis follows Michael's trail and tries to warn Annie's dad, Sheriff Lee Brackett (BRAD DOURIF), about the pending danger, Laurie and her friends go about their usual activities, unaware of what's about to unfold on their sleepy suburban street on Halloween night.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of horror films (including the original "Halloween"), director Rob Zombie, or anyone in the cast, they might be interested in seeing it.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For strong brutal bloody violence and terror throughout, sexual content, graphic nudity and language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • TYLER MANE plays the adult killer who leaves a trail of bodies while trying to find his long lost sister.
  • DAEG FAERCH plays him as a foul-mouthed 10-year-old who starts his violent spree with animals, followed by taking out a school bully and then his stepfather and sister.
  • SCOUT TAYLOR-COMPTON plays a high school senior who's only interested in babysitting on Halloween night, unaware of what (and who) awaits her.
  • MALCOLM McDOWELL plays a child psychologist who spends years trying to delve into Michael's psyche, only to be frustrated repeatedly. He uses some strong profanity.
  • BRAD DOURIF plays the local sheriff, and Annie's father, who doesn't take Loomis' warnings seriously, at least at first.
  • SHERI MOON plays young Michael's mother, a stripper in a thankless marriage. She uses strong profanity, but seems to care about the boy.
  • WILLIAM FORSYTHE plays her deadbeat husband, a bitter jerk and lech who belittles his family.
  • HANNA HALL plays young Michael's sister who dresses provocatively and has sex with her boyfriend rather than take Michael trick or treating as promised. She uses profanity.
  • DANIELLE HARRIS plays Laurie's friend who skips babysitting to go off and have sex with her boyfriend.
  • KRISTINA KLEBE plays their other friend who uses strong profanity and has sex with her boyfriend.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
Here's a quick look at the content found in this R-rated horror film. Profanity consists of at least 69 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are uttered. Sexually related dialogue (much of it explicit) is present, as is the sight of various sexual encounters (with movement, nudity, and sounds). A scantly clad stripper is seen in one scene, while a man looks at a pornographic magazine that clearly shows a woman's labia as she's bent over (along with other nudity).

Violence consists of a homicidal maniac (at a young age and later as an adult) killing many people by various means, often with extremely graphic and bloody results, while a suicide occurs off camera. Other non-lethal violence is present, and those scenes and various moments of peril could be unsettling, suspenseful, and/or scary to some viewers, particularly younger ones and those with low tolerance levels for such mayhem. Some of the material (including the scares) might be enticing for some kids to imitate.

Various characters have varying degrees of bad attitudes, some drinking and smoking occurs, and tense family material is present in the form of familial deaths and earlier verbal/mental abuse.

Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, some of that occurs in the film.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, a great deal of handheld camerawork (shaky to varying degrees) is seen in the film.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Ronnie has beer or liquor and later appears to be passed out.
  • Judith badmouths her stepfather, followed by her mom referring to him being drunk.
  • Annie talks of a lush who will be out getting hammered while Annie baby-sits that woman's child.
  • After having sex with her boyfriend and throwing a beer can aside, Lynda sends him out for more, but he only finds empties in the cooler in his vehicle. When Michael shows up in the boyfriend's place, Lynda asks about the beer without looking at him, and Michael then holds one up.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • We see young Michael wiping blood off a knife that he's apparently just used to kill his pet rat.
  • We hear young Michael urinating.
  • The school principal briefly shows a dead cat in a bag (the work of young Michael) as well as photos of a dead and bloody dog.
  • To get revenge for an earlier encounter, young Michael hits an older punk with a log in the woods, downing the boy. He then hits him repeatedly, all over his body, bloodying his face. The punk pleads for mercy, but Michael then pummels his face with that log, bloodying him even more, and then leaves him there for dead.
  • Young Michael finds Ronnie passed out in a chair, and so grabs a large kitchen knife and then tapes his stepfather to that chair. He then slits his throat, in very graphic fashion, with lots of blood spilling out.
  • Young Michael slowly walks up behind his sister's boyfriend in the kitchen, holding a baseball bat. He then hits him once, sending him to the floor. He then proceeds to pummel his head (we hear but don't see the impact, although we see the results -- bloody hair and what looks like brain matter on the guy's head, while blood pools on the floor around him).
  • Young Michael stabs his sister in her bedroom and she then stumbles out into the hallway, with blood on her clothing and skin, and some from her mouth.
  • We see his victims' blood on young Michael.
  • A nurse turns her back on young Michael who then attacks her with a fork. The attack is seen on a surveillance monitor, then we see the bloody and dying woman on the floor, that's also covered in blood.
  • Adult Michael suddenly breaks free from his shackles and attacks various guards at the sanatorium, killing all of them. That includes striking one, bashing the back of one's head to a wall repeatedly (with very bloody results), while one tries to shoot him. Another is killed, and then one is stabbed or otherwise struck in the neck, with lots of blood pouring out from there. Moments later, she's barely alive, and very bloody.
  • After seeing the massacre Michael has caused, a guard is nervous around the hulking figure. He slowly tries to put cuffs on him, but Michael grabs and throws the guard around, bloodying him. He then repeatedly dunks the guard's head under water (seen from down there, with blood mixing with the water, more each time).
  • Michael stabs and kills a man, with bloody results.
  • We see a dead and bloody coyote that's been strung up at a cemetery.
  • Michael suddenly grabs Laurie's father, but we don't see the murder. He then confronts Laurie's mother and then injures her (not seen). He then grabs her as she tries to crawl away, bashes her head down into a glass-top coffee table (with bloody results), and then breaks her neck.
  • We see a view of Laurie's dead and bloody parents on the floor in their home (Laurie doesn't know they're dead).
  • Michael attacks a couple having sex, first grabbing the man off the woman by his hair, and then stabbing him. He then grabs the woman and thrashes her about, wounding and bloodying her.
  • We see a dead man strung up in a foyer, with a pumpkin on his head, while a young woman is on the floor, wounded and bloody, and barely alive.
  • As Laurie goes to open a door, Michael attacks a cop (seen through the frosted glass, with blood spilling out from the cop onto it).
  • Michael grabs a man and appears to be gouging his eyes out (or crushing his head, with what looks like bloody results), but when we later see that man, he's dead, but without any blood on him.
  • Laurie is progressively bloodier from her repeated encounters with Michael at the end of the film.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE

  • Deborah refers to Ronnie as a "cripple."
  • The terms "queer," "faggot" and "faggoty" are used.
  • Two punks pick on young Michael at school, pushing him around and such (including slapping him on the back of the head), while also making sexual comments about his sister (saying she was caught selling blowjobs and had to have "cum" pumped out of her stomach). There's also talk of sucking "d*ck" and "t*ts," while one shows Michael a black and white newspaper ad depicting, presumably, Michael's mom in stripper attire (with added stars over her breasts and a skeleton head over her crotch).
  • The school principal briefly shows a dead cat in a bag (the work of young Michael) as well as photos of a dead and bloody dog.
  • A school punk grabs another student's cap off his head and spits into it.
  • Judith badmouths her stepfather, followed by her mom referring to him being drunk.

  • Seeing him outside watching them, Lynda mocks Michael and asks, "You want some of the young stuff?"
  • We see a dead and bloody coyote that's been strung up at a cemetery.
  • Annie uses the terms "retarded" about another person, but then adds, "Not like short bus retarded."
  • Sheriff Brackett admits that when he came across the Myers home suicide scene many years ago, he didn't report finding the infant girl, and thus took her someplace from where she was later adopted.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence," "Blood/Gore" and "Jump Scenes" may be unsettling, suspenseful, or scary to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material.

  • We see Michael behind Annie.
  • We see a dead man strung up in a foyer, with a pumpkin on his head, while a young woman is on the floor, wounded and bloody, and barely alive. Laurie enters and sees her friend on the floor and rushes to call for help, unaware that Michael is behind the front door that now closes. The injured friend tries to yell out to warn Laurie, but can't muster that.
  • Michael suddenly grabs Laurie. She then breaks free and uses a chair to break through a door to get out, but limps and falls as she tries to run outside, with Michael after her. She gets back to a house and hides in a bathtub upstairs with two young kids, trying to remain quiet as Michael enters the house. The police then arrive with guns drawn, but as Laurie goes to open the door, Michael attacks the cop (seen through the frosted glass, with blood spilling out from the cop onto it). Michael then breaks through the door and comes after Laurie. The other cop gets off one shot that hits Michael, but he then attacks and kills the cop. He then grabs Laurie and carries her away.
  • Michael approaches Laurie who's cornered, but he drops his knife and tries to make contact with her. Not knowing his motives, she slowly reaches for his knife and then jams it into his neck, leaving him on the floor, motionless. She then tries to get out of the room by tearing wood away from a door or wall, but he then comes crashing through that and tries to grab her. She manages to pull away part of a chain link fence (a gate) to get out, but then falls into an empty swimming pool. Michael then walks down into it, and doesn't stop when Loomis asks him to. Accordingly, Loomis fires several shots into Michael, downing him in the empty pool.
  • As Michael searches for her in an old house, Laurie tries to hide and remain quiet, including when he bursts through a wall (but she's not there and instead is just around the corner). She then spots and grabs a gun, and then climbs up into an attic. Michael then takes a large piece of wood and repeatedly jams it up through the ceiling, trying to hit her. This is done violently and the blows erupt up near her. She then falls through the ceiling to the floor below, with Michael then approaching her. She tries to ready her gun, but he drives her back through a wall and both crash out it, through a balcony railing, and to the ground below. She ends up on top of him and tries to shoot him, but the gun's chambers are empty. As he comes to, she finally finds one live round and fires it, but we don't see the impact.

  • Young Michael's sister makes fun of him being in the locked bathroom, saying, "Stop jerking off in there." When there's talk that his pet rat is dead, she jokingly asks, "What did you do, stroke him to death?" She then makes mock male masturbation gestures and related sounds.
  • Two punks pick on young Michael at school, pushing him around and such, while also making sexual comments about his sister (saying she was caught selling blowjobs and had to have "cum" pumped out of her stomach). After they're done, we see her bare breasts again as she partially gets dressed. Later, young Michael walks into her bedroom as she dozes, and we see just part of her bare butt in her small shorts. He then runs his hand along her leg, with her complaining that once a night is enough (referring to sex). She then realizes it's Michael and not her boyfriend wearing the mask in front of her.
  • A male trucker goes into a bathroom stall and looks at a porno magazine that shows photos of a nude woman, including with her bare rear sticking out and her labia is clearly seen. Michael then enters the bathroom and stands at that man's stall, irritating the trucker who says he has a "taco deluxe supreme" waiting for him, talks of dropping his load (ejaculating), and that if Michael is looking for action (meaning gay-based), to look elsewhere.
  • Laurie seemingly jokingly talks of some "horny old pervert" who touched her in the past.

  • There's some talk of a cheerleading incident involving one of Laurie's friends, with something about "snatch" and the girls do a mocking pelvic thrust (clothed) regarding that. There's also talk of "poontang" and one tells another, "You're totally a slut."
  • Seeing him outside watching them, Lynda mocks Michael and asks, "You want some of the young stuff?"
  • We see Lynda and her boyfriend having sex under some covers on the floor, with her on top, and movement and her bare breasts are seen. She passionately repeats, "Right there" but is then mad about him apparently climaxing, saying, "A little warning would have been nice." We later see the boyfriend shirtless but wearing pants, and when she thinks he's returned (but it's really Michael in a mask), she asks if he sees anything he likes, lowering her top to reveal her bare breasts. She then gets up and we see her full rear nudity and comments on letting him touch her with that "thing" (his penis), but Michael then grabs and kills her. We see her bare breasts during the struggle, and then again as he carries her body, fully nude (we also see the side of her bare butt, as well as a little pubic hair from the side view).
  • After Laurie leaves for the evening, her dad asks her mom about some "loving," but she says that will have to wait until later.
  • The girl Annie is babysitting mockingly says, "You know you're going to share something with Paul" (her boyfriend, meant sexually).
  • Laurie and Annie do something of a playful imitation of sex while standing, clothed.
  • While he's on top of her on a couch, Annie asks her boyfriend, "You gonna f*ck me?" and then has him tell her just that.
