QUICK TAKE:
Drama: After being sent off to Puerto Rico to keep him out of harm's way, an aspiring rapper finds new inspiration for his music.
PLOT:
Rob (OMARION GRANDBERRY) is an aspiring rapper in New York City who has a way of getting in trouble with both the law and various hoods. When the latter come shooting for him, his mom, Tanya (KELLITA SMITH), informs him that he'll go to live with his father, Roberto (GIANCARLO ESPOSITO), who really isn't dead as he's always been told, but rather is living in Puerto Rico with his new wife, Marivi (ROSA ARREDONDO), and her son, Javi (VICTOR RASUK).

Rob reluctantly arrives in his new home, but quickly bonds with Javi who runs his own radio station on the Internet and is into mixing the local hybrid music known as Reggaeton. He also shows Rob around town, which is when he meets hotel dance instructor C.C. (ZULAY HENAO) who dreams of going to New York to be a professional dancer.

As the two start to fall for each other, and his and Javi's musical efforts come together, C.C. gets them an audition with American talent scout Jeffrey (JAMES McCAFFREY) who not only likes them, but also obviously has an eye on her. From that point on, the three young people continue to pursue their dreams.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of anyone in the film, or the music that plays within it, they might.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For sexual content, violence, some drug use, language and innuendos.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • OMARION GRANDBERRY plays an aspiring New York rapper who's sent to live with the father he never knew after an attempt on the young man's life. He isn't happy about that, but his spirits perk up when he starts making music with Javi and falls for C.C. (with whom he eventually has sex). He's not always a nice guy, however, as he steals from others and is mean to C.C. when he thinks she's fooling around with Jeffrey. He drinks, briefly smokes pot, and uses some profanity.
  • ZULAY HENAO plays a young woman who works as a hotel dance instructor and hopes to make it big as a dancer in New York. She ends up falling for Rob, has sex with him and then a falling out, briefly uses strong profanity, and gets intoxicated with Jeffrey.
  • VICTOR RASUK plays Rob's half-brother, an amateur music mixer who hopes to make it big with Rob when the two connect. He drinks, smokes, briefly smokes pot, and uses some profanity.
  • GIANCARLO ESPOSITO plays Rob's dad who allows the young man to move in with them, and then tries to explain why he was never around in his boy's life (due to drug and drinking problems in his musician past).
  • ROSA ARREDONDO plays his wife who runs the shop with him and easily accepts Rob into their home.
  • KELLITA SMITH plays Rob's mother who's concerned about his safety.
  • JAMES McCAFFREY plays an American talent scout who eyes C.C. and tries to make her into a star, which also holds true for Rob and Javi. He smokes, drinks some, and tries to come on to C.C. while she's intoxicated (forcing himself onto her).

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this drama that's been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of at least 1 "f" word, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Some sexually related dialogue is present, a sexual encounter is partially seen, and various bits of sexualized dancing (gyrating and thrusting hips, simulated sexual movements, and other "dirty dancing") occurs, while various women are occasionally seen in revealing attire.

Violence includes a man trying to kill another via gunshots, while some fighting occurs (including the beating of a woman), and an intoxicated woman must fend off a man who tries to force himself onto her sexually. Some of that might be unsettling for some viewers, but it's directed in such an inept way that there's little to no traditional suspense (unless one is very sensitive to such matters).

Other bad attitudes are present, as is drinking (with some intoxication), smoking, and brief drug use (two young men share a joint). Tense family material is also present, as is behavior that might be enticing for some kids to imitate.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, several scenes are set in clubs where we see partial or full strobe effects.
